BIOGRAPHIES
Biographies give students a “you are there” understanding
of the people who change our world … past, present and
future. With subjects ranging from great historical figures
to today’s sports and entertainment icons, biographies
support and extend the curricula in science, language
arts and social studies. And yes, they make great leisure
“reads” too!

Escape from Slavery: The True Story
of My Ten Years in Captivity—and
My Journey to Freedom in America
Francis Bok, Edward Tivnan. St. Martin’s
Griffin 2003.
As a seven-year-old, Bok was selling
his mother’s eggs and peanuts near his village in southern
Sudan when Arab raiders on horseback burst into the quiet
marketplace, murdering men and gathering the women and
young children into a group. Strapped to horses and donkeys,
he and others were taken north into lives of slavery. After two
failed attempts to flee, Bok finally escaped at age 17. He
persevered through prison and refugee camps for three more
years, winning the attention of United Nations officials who
granted passage to America. Now a student and an anti-slavery
activist, Bok has made it his life’s mission to combat world
slavery. His is the first voice to speak for an estimated 27
million people held against their wills in nearly every nation.

The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald. Scribner Paperback
Fiction 1995, 1953. 1st Scribner
Paperback Fiction ed.
This is the definitive, textually accurate
edition of a classic of twentieth-century
literature, The Great Gatsby. The story of the fabulously wealthy
Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan has
been acclaimed by generations of readers. This edition, based
on the Cambridge critical text, restores all the language of
Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. Drawing on the manuscript and
surviving proofs of the novel, along with Fitzgerald’s later
revisions and corrections, this is the authorized text—The
Great Gatsby as Fitzgerald intended it.
