WELCOME
On behalf of the Board of
Directors and your staff at
Green Valley Recreation,
Inc., I welcome you to
a new semester of fun,
learning and relaxation at
GVR. The 2015 Fall Catalog
course offerings promise
to be among the best ever!
Inside the pages of this
Fall Catalog you’ll discover
everything from nature
and animals, ceramics and
lapidary, to language, music,
sports and fitness. There is
something for everyone of
nearly every interest.
Research shows that our
brains become stronger
with regular exercise, as
do other muscles. So
do something good for
yourself – and your brain – by taking a class
or two at GVR to pursue a lifelong passion,
explore an intriguing subject, or just learn
something new.
This semester we have 81 instructors who
are teaching 295 classes from among 172
different course titles, including 47 new
classes. Some of these new classes include
ceramics’ Wheel Tricks and Techniques and
Fundamentals of Hand Building, Pickleball
101 and 201 (to coincide with the Grand
Opening of our four new pickleball courts
at East Center!), Our Vietnam Experience,
Opera Survivors Guide I and II, Fascinating
Fungi, Restorative Yin Yoga, Pilates 101, Wax
and Rubber Stamping, and many more!
For those who like travel and adventure, GVR
invites you to join us on any of our chartered
trips and tours. Our Phoenix Valley trip for a
Frank Lloyd Wright-themed day and Canyon
Lake boat tour along the Apache Trail are
just two of the exciting outings we offer.
Be sure to provide your email address when
you register for classes! We are transitioning
our class evaluation process from paper to
online. Gathering your input electronically
will improve our efficiency and your learning
experience.
Learning through leisure education is a great
way to broaden your horizons, stay active
and engaged, and make new friends who
share similar interests. So turn the page, pick
a few classes or activities that interest you,
and exercise your mind at the same time. It’s
a no-brainer.

Amazing Arachnids
Arachnids are the eight-legged creatures that
include spiders, scorpions, daddy-long-legs and
many other animals. Did you know that arachnids
are the second most diverse group of land-dwelling
invertebrates, only behind the insects? Unfortunately,
many people fear these remarkable animals. This
class will introduce students to these fascinating
animals. We will also try to dispel people’s fears and
misperceptions about them. So join us for a fun,
interesting look at our arachnid neighbors.

Animal Behavior - Wild, Weird, Wacky
Wildlife! Part I
Most people enjoy seeing wildlife, yet it seems
that few of us truly spend enough time with them
to learn their distinct habits and behaviors or the
evolutionary forces that produced them. Here,
Wildlife Biologist and Naturalist Vincent Pinto delves
into the diets, mating strategies, predator avoidance,
thermoregulation, migration, competition and other
intricate wildlife behaviors that collectively make
each species unique. Part I is organized by these and
other animal behaviors that are sure to fascinate and
surprise you. Learn why a female Praying Mantis eats
her mate, which species has been known to mate for
weeks on end, and which species consists only of
females! Whether you are a birdwatcher, gardener,
artist, or simply enjoy seeing animals, this class is
certain to enrich your wildlife encounters, adding a
new depth to them! Parts I and II of Animal Behavior

In Part II of Animal Behavior, Wildlife Biologist and
Naturalist Vincent Pinto will continue to share the
often bizarre and unique behaviors exhibited by
a broad spectrum of wildlife. You’ll learn about a
diversity of different species not covered in Part
I. This fun exploration of the ways of wildlife is
organized by various groups of animals. Mammals,
birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates all
come to life as you discover not only their behaviors
but also the driving forces behind them. Learn why
some birds raise siblings rather than have their own
nest, which species has ‘transvestite’ males, and
why certain insects dance when they find food.

Circle of Forgiveness
When we resist forgiveness, we drain our energy
fields. When we are hardened by our inability to
have the compassion to forgive, we lose a piece
of ourselves. Anger and resentment are energetic
monsters that can cause illness, sleeplessness, loss
of appetite, loss of memory and/or clarity and can
deprive us of our joy. Using meditation, exercises
and self-reflection this class will show you how to
eliminate this unhealthy habit and make peace within.
