OFFICIAL SHOW GUIDE
WELCOME TO IIDEX
CANADA
For some, this will be
your first time at the
show. For many, this
will be your second,
eighth, or perhaps
even 28th time visiting
Canada’s largest
trade show for the
built environment.
This repeat factor is
not at all surprising
given the hundreds
of reasons to attend
the show, from
discovering countless
new products to
valuable networking
activities. Whether
you are a seasoned
veteran or an emerging
professional, there
is programming geared
to you. We have had a
great time collaborating
on this year’s show.
The decision for IDC
and RAIC to partner as
co-presenters was
the right decision at the
right time – reason
number one for
WHIIDEX. Now, what’s
your WHIIDEX?

WHAT’S YOUR BIG IDEA?
ANIMATE YOUR SPACE
This year’s Special Delivery exhibit gives designers a real challenge: the interiors of 18-wheelers.
Working with the curatorial team of Deborah Wang and Jeremy Vandermeij of Toronto Design Offsite,
as well as Shaun Moore and Julie Nicholson of MADE, IIDEX invited local artists and designers to create
immersive art installations in trucks owned by leading manufacturers, using the manufacturers’ own
products and materials. Participants include Scott Eunson, Christina Zeidler, design studio Fugitive
Glue, Jade Rude and Orest Tataryn. The trucks, located throughout the show floor, will relocate
to outside the Gladstone Hotel for the Fender Bender closing-night party. BOOTHS 1449, 1835, 1827, 1815

Moleskine takes IIDEX by storm with three exciting features. Created in collaboration
with Milan and Toronto-based architect, Enrico Cleva, the Canada Sketches project
includes drawings by designers and architects from across Canada, showcased at the
International Pavilion and in an online Flickr gallery. Look for the Design In Action
sketchbooks at key event locations, where visitors can doodle their IIDEX-inspired ideas
for potential inclusion in Moleskine’s permanent collection. Purchase your own
Moleskine at the Swipe bookstore, or keep an eye out for the Sketchbook In-Hand
initiative to get your special edition of IIDEX-branded Moleskine notebooks at events
throughout the show.
NEW / NOW / NEVER BEFORE
This year’s Architecture Canada expo features a wide array
of architectural products, from finishes and windows to
architectural software and sustainable products. Also, the
winners of the 2012 National Urban Design Awards – including
Toronto’s Sherbourne Common (shown), Thunder Bay’s
Gathering Circle and the North Vancouver City Library – will
be highlighted at the show with an exhibit and awards
ceremony. BOOTH 243

Toronto through Janis Kravis’s design store, Karelia. BOOTH 1637
DROP IN AND STAY AWHILE
The Hospitality Canada Expo, sponsored by NEWH Canada, features the latest finds

YOU ARE HOW YOU EAT (AND SLEEP):
GREAT TRAVEL EXPERIENCES BY DESIGN
If there’s one thing that top hotels across the globe have in common, it’s an
unmistakable sense of drama – often thanks to designer Adam D. Tihany.
Tihany has worked with chefs and hoteliers in Las Vegas, Cape Town, Seoul
and other hotspots to create extraordinary spaces, like Dinner at the
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. With Air Canada’s enRoute magazine editor-inchief Ilana Weitzman, Tihany will discuss the methods behind his evocative
designs, including how his relationships with his clients – like celeb chefs
Thomas Keller, Wolfgang Puck and Heston Blumenthal – play a crucial
role in his process.
WILL HASTINGS
SOLVING WITH STORY:
A THEATRICAL APPROACH TO LIGHTING DESIGN
Not many companies know magic better than Disney. And no designer
knows how to use lighting to its dizzyingly spectacular capabilities as well
as Will Hastings. The senior designer with Walt Disney Imagineering has
mastered the art of juggling every factor imaginable – from budget, schedule
and maintenance to efficiency and even cultural considerations – to
create truly innovative light displays. Hastings will present his past projects
as proof of how lighting designers are simply storytellers in disguise.

The era of socially sustainable architecture has arrived, and three of its

John Peterson, of national non-profit design initiative Public Architecture.
Canadian Architect editor-in-chief Ian Chodikoff will lead the panellists

PATRICK NORGUET
The French have a knack for merging
timeless detail with space-age
silhouettes, and Patrick Norguet is
no exception. The Parisian designer
has been producing fresh, innovative
furniture and lighting designs since
2000, when he was discovered
by Giulio Cappellini at the Salon du
Meuble and his first piece, the
Plexiglas Rainbow Chair, went into
production. Norguet will discuss
his recent foray into interior design
– notably his series of McDonald’s
restaurants across France – and
how his industrial design process
informs his spectacular spaces.
Norguet’s keynote is part of the
Vis-à-Vis Architecture cycle
coordinated by the Embassy of
France and the Institut Français.
