Location: In sunny low point adjacent to Annual
Vegetable Garden
•
•
When planted with the right mix of species,
berry thickets produce fruit to extend the entire
harvest season.
Easy to plant and maintain. Bush and bramble
fruits are space efficient and easy to grow. They
rarely require spraying for pests, and they begin
bearing some fruit the year after planting.
•
low growing so as to maintain open views
•
As a separate area, berries can easily receive
special care as needed (i.e. covered in netting, if
required).
•
Creating some separation between gardens allows
for certain community members, students and/
or staff to focus their individual interests on
specific areas.

•
Start small with a handful of dwarf fruit trees that
are proven performers requiring minimal maintenance.
•
Encourage program initiatives that develop
partnerships with local residents in order to take
advantage of surrounding knowledge and interests and expand maintenance capabilities.
•
Based on soil type, adopt a model of sustainable
urban agriculture that includes perennial edible
plants that will flourish with minimal irrigation.
•
Design process to include detailed input from
Aptus staff in order to provide a plan that will be
successful over the long-term.

Design a four season growing space geared
towards education and the production of
sustainable greens, community building and food

The cost of a heated greenhouse is very much
dependent on the available budget and the
specific requirements. A fully equipped accessible

from $80,000 to $150,000 depending on program
