Important Dates

Thursday 7 September:
Junior Semi formal.
Friday 9 September:
PPTA/NZEI Paid Union meeting,
9.00-11.00am.
Our thoughts are with the Westland High School community

following the accidental death of River Caldwell last week.
River was also part our West Coast Trades Academy and
known by many of our students. As a staff, we sent
morning tea to Westland High School staff and our Student
Council will show support to their students. If you are ever concerned about your child, or someone you
know, we do run a confidential counselling and support service at school. This can be accessed by
phoning our office (0800 GREYHIGH) or by asking Jill Nicol at the Student Office for an appointment. The
service is discreet and confidential, although if concerns for safety are raised then there has to be followup and this is stated by our team.
I was delighted to watch our netballers in their finals last weekend and special mention must go to our A
team who won. This team has benefitted from a volunteer coach, Nicola Meehan, and management by
Miss Cara Sibtsen.
It’s Tournament Week and many of our teams are away.
Emily Urban’s Dance group are also away to the Vast Dance
Festival in Nelson. Emily has done an amazing job of
supporting these dancers. Also out are Trades Academy
students doing the highest level of Manaaki Tapoi, or Māori
cultural tourism, including presenting to tourists on the
Inter-Islander. Relief is at an absolute max, and I thank our
relief team and Roz Stuart for the extreme timetabling that’s
happening!
For the students at school, this is a good opportunity to get
more teacher help.
Year 10 classes are currently working through
“DreamCatcher” evenings where we ask for all parents/
caregivers to attend to try to make good choices for NCEA in
2017.

PPTA & NZEI Paid Union Meeting
On Friday 9 September, between 9.00 and 11.00 am, there is a “Paid Union Meeting” called by
all unions involved in education to discuss an aspect of the Ministry of Education’s funding review. This is
not a time or date of our choosing (it is just before senior practice exams) but it is important that many of
our staff can attend. School will be open that day, including between 9.00 and 11.00am, and buses will
travel at the normal times. Mentor time will happen as usual at 8.40am, then students will be given a
choice of activities for periods 1 and 2. If you don’t use a bus and are able to have your child at home
between 9.00 and 11.00, it would be helpful for you do so. It is really important that students attend
periods 3, 4 and 5 that day so please ensure that your child attends these classes at least. If you have
any queries, please email [email protected] or call our office on 768 0472 (0800 GREYHIGH).

These evenings will focus on careers and option choices for Year 11. The evening will involve a
presentation on Year 11 at Greymouth High School followed by the opportunity to work through the
option choices. These evenings are staffed by the teachers for each year 10 class and follow on from a
careers unit being completed through the social studies class.
Junior Semi-formal
‘Neon’ themed Junior Semi-Formal will be held on Wednesday 7th September from 7.00pm-10.00pm in the
school Technology Block (Shakespeare Street). Permission slips and $5.00 are due in to the office by
Friday 2nd September). Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase on the night (cash only). This
event is open to Year 9 and 10 Greymouth High School students only.
West Coast Science Fair
The West Coast Science Fair (pictured right) was held last
Friday, 26th August at Greymouth High School, bringing
together students from Westland High School, Buller High
School, John Paul II High School, St Patricks School,
Westport North School, Westport South and Greymouth
High School. A big thanks to our Level 2 & 3 science
students for helping us to mark all the excellent projects
and determine our winners, as well as Sue Calder for
giving up the library for a day and being our
photographer.
First place (and a $200 prize!) went to Asher Lambert,
John Paull II High School, with his research on using crabs
as a biomarker for pollution. Second place to Josh Roche, Buller
High School, about the perfect surface to bounce cricket balls off,
and third place to our own (pictured right); Edith Hopkinson, Emily
Speirs and Summer Pizzato for "Smell and Tell", a project about
how our senses of smell and taste interact. Some other highlights
included seeing if goats or horses are more easily confused, testing
what makes gunpowder explode, and finding out if cats are left or
right handed.
We look forward to seeing the best of the West Coast Science
again next year, and challenge our Year 9s to start thinking of
great projects now!
