It is the time of day when the sun has just begun to depart, and
Melana is in a crowd watching a performance by a wooden clock, known as
The Clock of the Time Dragon. This clock is under a spell, and is equipped
with an elaborately carved dragon atop it. Melana is pregnant with her first
child, and after the performance she needs to have the baby, and has it
inside of the clock. The baby is named Elphaba, and it is instantly clear she
is different. She is born with green skin and sharp teeth, and she can’t
stand water touching her skin.
1
When Elphaba goes to school, she meets Glinda, a beautiful, upperclass girl from the city of Shiz. They are forced to become roommates by
the headmaster Madame Morrible. Madame Morrible resembles a fish, and
from the start Elphaba doesn’t like her. Madame morrible is a mysterious
old lady that is full of secrets.
2
One year while Elphaba was attending the school, her younger sister
Nessarose attended. Nessarose was born without arms, so she often
needed assistance for everyday things. One day, Nessa received a gift
from her father. It was a glorious pair of dazzling ruby shoes, which
Elphaba was instantly jealous of.
3
One of the professors at the school is Doctor Dillamond. He is
Elphaba’s favorite and she often helps him in his science lab. Dr Dillamond
is far different than most the other professors, for he is a goat capable of
conscious thought and speech. A creature such as this is known as an
Animal. During Elphaba’s stay at the school, Dr. Dillamond turns up dead,
with the cause mysteriously unknown. Interestingly enough, Dr. Dillamond
was close to a breakthrough when he died.
4
Elphaba becomes disgusted on the way that Animals are being
treated, so she decides to tell the wizard of OZ. When she tries to tell him,
he doesn’t listen, and the whole journey and effort was useless. It was after
this trip to the wizard that Elphaba decides she doesn’t want to go back to
school with Horrible Morrible. She sends Glinda on a horse and buggy ride
back to school and then runs away. Glinda didn’t see Elphaba again for
more than 12 years.
5
Elphaba goes into hiding, but an old friend from school called Fiyero
finds her. They reunite, but Fiyero is killed shortly after. Elphaba feels
partially responsible for the death, so she goes on a journey to find Fiyero’s
family and tell them what she knows. By the time Elphaba finally arrives at
the house, located in The Thousand Years Grasslands, she has found
herself acquainted with a young, fat child, a baby monkey, an old broom, a
crow, a dog, and a basket of various things, including honey bees.
6
Elphaba decides to visit her sister Nessarose, who she hasn’t seen in
12 years. When she visits, she realizes that her sister is a witch, and the
shoes are what helped her become one. Nessa promises to leave the
shoes for Elphaba in her will. When Elphaba returns to The Thousand
Years Grasslands, everybody is gone except the nanny. It turns out that
some soldiers had forced everybody in the house but the nanny to leave.
7
Elphaba learns that a house has landed on her sister in a storm, and
her sister passed away. Elphaba goes to the scene of the accident and she
sees that Glinda is there, and had given the shoes to a girl that came out of
the house. This girl’s name is Dorothy Gale. A small dog named Toto
accompanies Dorothy. Elphaba is furious that she didn’t get the shoes that
were rightfully hers.
8
Elphaba later sees Dorothy and her friends, and Elphaba mistakes
The Scarecrow for Fiyero. For this she tries to help them by leading them to
the castle. Elphaba sends her dog, crows, flying monkeys, and bees to lead
them, but Dorothy and her friends think it’s an attack so they defend
themselves. This makes Elphaba realize that the Scarecrow is not Fiyero,
so she is angered further.
9
During a fight, Elphaba sets her broom on fire and eventually herself.
Dorothy throws water onto Elphaba in an innocent gesture of help. The
water melts Elphaba, until she is no more. In the end, it turns out the
Wizard was Elphaba’s father, and he gave her mom a green potion. This is
what made Elphaba’s skin turn green. Dorothy was rumored to have gone
back to Kansas, and her little dog too.
