Meet Bob Larson
Sioux Council Field Director
Bob Larson is very excited to join the Sioux Council team as Field
Director for Team 3 which includes Lewis and Clark Trail District,
Pheasant District and Five Rivers District. He is from Wisconsin,
originally and has been in the Scouting profession for over 25 years.
Previous Councils include Kalamazoo, MI, Quincy, IL, and Decatur,
Illinois.
Bob has been married to Peggy for 35 years this October and has one
daughter. One reason Bob is so excited to be on the Sioux Council
team is that his daughter, Heidi, and her family reside in Sioux Falls!
Bob and Peggy have long wanted to be close to Heidi, her husband,
Travis and their 18-month old son, Lincoln, so they are very grateful
for the opportunity to be here and consider it a blessing in so many
different ways.

with his family and being active in
his church. He looks forward to
working with the Sioux Council
staff and volunteers and making a
difference in the lives of area youth

2017 National Jamboree
It’s time to start planning for the 2017 National
Jamboree, set for July 19-28, 2017. It will be at
Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. The
theme for the Jamboree is “ Live Scouting’s Adventure.” The contingent from Sioux Council will be
made up of 36 Scouts and 4 leaders. If you are
interested in being part of the contingent contact the
Sioux Council Office and put your name on the list.
Estimated cost based on the 2013 Jamboree will be around $2500. Once you are selected, payments can be made to Sioux Council. We are waiting more info to determine the
actual cost. All registrations will be made on the Jamboree website. Registrations are
already open for youth and adult participants.
Registrations for Staff are open as of April 2015.

Did you know all Cub Scout Leader training is available for you online? Now is the best time to get
your required training completed before our program year kicks off during the back-to-school craze of
August and September. Trainings for all Den Leaders, committee members, Cub Masters, and more
can be taken online at www.myscouting.org. Log in and check out the E-Learning section of the
Training page (be sure to add your BSA ID# to your profile—this keeps your records accurate!).
Youth Protection Training is also available in the same location.
All Scouts deserve a trained leader, and being properly trained will allow you to better lead your youth
in addition to making your role easier and more fun! Let your Cub Master know when you have completed your required training. Additional training is available in person throughout the fall—be sure to
check the district calendar and the Leadership Training section at www.siouxbsa.org.

Get the Most Out of Your Sale
Like all fundraisers, selling popcorn takes a great deal of effort and organization to be
successful. Why not get the most return for your efforts? Increase your return by getting the most commission possible. To get the full 30% commission on every popcorn
item sold, all you have to do is complete these
important steps:
1) Attend you district Roundtable in April 2015. If you wer e unable to have a
representative from your unit present in April, please contact your District
Executive.
2) Plan out your 2015-2016 Calendar. Tur n a copy in at your August Roundtable.
3) Plan out your 2016-2016 Budget. Tur n a copy in at your August Roundtable.
4) Attend your district Roundtable in August. You will need to have one adult
attend the Membership Recruitment breakout and one adult attend the Popcorn
breakout.
5) Sell more popcorn than in 2014. Even a dollar mor e in gr oss sales will gain you
an additional 2% commission. Make your plan to increase sales this year.

HeroTek Saved the Day (Camp)!
On Wednesday, June 3rd, North Star
District held their Cub Scout Day
Camp in Aberdeen, SD, and also on
Friday, June 5th in Watertown, SD. Both
days consisted of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities with a
hero theme. Cubs were able to experience
different stations throughout the day such as
making a robotic hand, terrariums, BB guns,
and archery to name a few. The two camps
were a huge success due to two talented ladies, Jen Deutsch Aberdeen Camp Director,
and Corrine Kallenmeyn, Watertown Camp
Director, who organized the events, and all of
the volunteers that helped as walkers or station workers during these two days. All of
you made the day very special. Thank You!!
August Roundtable
The August Roundtable is coming soon! It
will be held at 7:00pm at the Webster Middle
School. This is our annual program kickoff,
and at least 2 people from each unit need to
attend to earn bonus popcorn commission.
The program will be membership and popcorn training.
SPECIAL THANK YOU
A special thank you to Troop 188 in
Aberdeen for all of their help at the
Northstar Akela Camp held on June 19 – 21
at Richmond Lake Youth Camp. The Scouts
and leaders stepped up to ensure that those
attending the Akela Camp had a WOW experience. They performed skits and led
songs at our campfires as well as the performing the flag ceremonies.
Thank you again Troop 188. You are a
WOW Troop!!

Is Your Program Calendar Ready?
The August Roundtable is fast approaching
and that is when your ideal year program
planning budget and calendar are due if you
want to earn the 3% commission bonus for
your popcorn sale this year. So make sure to
get those done as soon as possible. Remember that your unit must have at least two people at the kickoff. One for popcorn and one
for membership to qualify for the extra percent in popcorn.

Fall Program Kickoff
Our fall kickoff will be at the August
Roundtable, held on August 13 at the
Center for Scouting. Two adults from
every unit need to be in attendance, both
at the popcorn and recruitment sessions.
A copy of your unit’s calendar and budget
will also need to be turned in at this time.
Doing these will qualify your unit for an
extra 3% bonus commission on your popcorn sale. Roundtable will begin at 7pm
Fall Recruitment
It’s hard to believe, but summer is already
half over! As part of your back to school
planning, please be thinking about how
your pack can attract new members at the
start of classes. Each new scout will receive a model rocket kit to assemble and
launch as one of their first pack activities!
There will be a lot of sign up meetings
gong on in late August and early September, so please consider what your pack
can to do to draw in new members and let
your District Executives know what date
you have in mind for your first meeting.

a strong recruitment!
Outdoor Leadership Skills Training
An outdoor leadership course will be held
the weekend of Aug. 28-30 at Newton
Hills Scout Camp. Courses to be held include Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation for Cub Scout leaders (Saturday only), and Scout Master Specifics and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills for Boy
Scout leaders.
This is a great course for all Scoutmasters
and Asstistant Scout Masters interested in
expanding their leadership skills in an outdoor setting. Both courses are also great
fellowship opportunities with other volunteers.

Day Camps and Akela Camp
Summer is here and the Mitchell and
Huron Day Camps have already happened and the Mitchell Akela Camp is
coming up July 10-12. There many
happy faces at the two Day Camps and
we want to thank our two directors,
Tanya Lambert in Mitchell and Eric Harms in
Huron and their staffs for their hard work in making these WOW events a great success! Please
make sure everyone in your Pack has the opportunity to attend the Mitchell Akela Camp which
has a great program planned. The Mitchell Akela
Camp will be held at Camp Arroya.
District Leader Retreat
August 7-9 is the weekend for the 2015
District Leadership Retreat to be held at
Lake Louise State Park outside Miller.
This will be a fun and relaxing weekend
for leaders and their families and we will
spend a little time planning the upcoming scouting year. Bring your canoe, boat, fishing and
camping gear and swim suit. If camping , you
must go to the State Reservation website and register for a campsite as soon as possible to stay in

Roundtable Kickoff
We hope everyone enjoys their summer months
while we took a break from our monthly
Roundtables, but it will soon be time to get back
into the swing of things with our most valuable
Roundtable of the year! Don’t miss the August
13th Roundtable - each unit that brings two
adult leaders (1 for Popcorn training & 1 for
Membership training) will receive an extra
2% popcorn commission for the upcoming
sale! We will also be starting at 7:00 pm to
provide enough time for our additional training.
The popcorn breakout will include how to hold a
popcorn kickoff for your unit, updates on new
products this year and answer questions about
when to place your orders and conduct transfers
between units during this sale.
The membership breakout will include how to
properly plan unit recruitments, receiving recruitment materials such as posters and yard signs,
and scheduling tips to maximize the effects of
your efforts. Please bring a copy of your unit’s
WOW year budget and calendar.

Lewis & Clark Trail continues to
be a district dedicated to making
a difference in the lives of youth!
As I sit down to write this Sioux Trails installment I received an email with some great news.
One of the major measuring sticks of success in
youth programs is membership. In LCT we have
had some ups and downs, mostly due to retention
issues. The great news I received was that LCT
hit mid-year (June 30) growth! This means we
had better retention this year and will not be starting off as far from year end growth when we fire
up our fall recruitments! This success is based in
several places. Our Cub program has outstanding
leaders and program continues to improve. Our
camps are home to outstanding program and our
numbers are up. We are working hard to have
improved communications across the board and
thanks to a dedicated group of fundraising volunteers we can afford to invest in trainings, materials and resources. Mid-year growth is the first
step, let’s also be the first to hit year end growth
in the fall!
We also just finished up Day & Akela
Camps at our Scout Camp facility on the bluffs
above the Missouri River. What an experience
for all involved. The weather cooperated for the
most part, we built robot hands and even had a
few Sasquatch sightings. For those who did not
attend, please take the time to visit with those
who did, they will share their experiences and
most likely have you eager to sign up for the next
set of camps in the fall. We are very fortunate to
have access to the Lewis & Clark Scout Camp
and thank all the staff for helping us make spring
camps a huge success.
Cub program changes are upon us. We
have had several good trainings on the new program and the feedback seems to be that it will be
good once we make the transition. Please take t
he time to review changes so you can
start off on the right foot this fall. Any
questions, let us know.
It’s hard to believe but we are already
looking at fall events. Please take the
time to schedule your unit’s activities
including recruitments and popcorn planning.
Our August roundtable will be at R-Tec in Yankton on Thursdays, August 13. We will provide
supper for attendees, please have representation
to ensure you get the highest possible popcorn
commission.
Lewis & Clark Trail is a district on the

Akela Camp- August 7-9
Fall Recruitment
Akela this summer will be hold on Aug 9th arriving at 6pm Friday evening and staying until 11am
on Sunday August 9th. Alternatively you can also
just attend on Saturday Aug 8th from 8am until
after dinner. Akela Camp will be at Oahe Downstream Group Lodge in Fort Pierre, Sd. The
theme is “Camping with Sasquatch” and we all
know he is elusive! Don’t forget at least one adult
must attend with each scout. If you have any

Once again it’s time to build your Pack or
Troop! All cubmasters should have the new family night program. We can discuss the packet and
any questions you might have at the August 10th
roundtable. We will discuss what the district can
do and what you can do to grow your pack/troop!
Day Camp Success
We have had two awesome Spring Day Camps in
Pierre and Selby. Making Tony Stark’s robotic
arm was a favorite among all the campers along
with all the other Super Hero stations. New
friendships were made as they expanded their science knowledge! Thanks to the volunteers and the
parents that helped with each station-you helped
make it an awesome experience!

2015 Fall Camporee
A great schedule of events has been published,
and designed to WOW your scouts at our 2015
Fall Camporee. Which will be held at Camp
Shetek on October 9-11 to commemorate the
75th anniversary of Camp Shetek! As your scouts
compete for top scores throughout the day they
will also earn “Buffalo Chips" for the evening
auction! That’s right, every unit is going to have
the chance to replace their lost, or maybe never
cleaned Dutch oven. Maybe your troop needs a
new drinking cooler to keep your water cold during the hot summer. Those items plus much more
will be at your fingertips to bid on at the evening
auction! Look for the leader guide in the Tidbits,
and registration is up online to sign up your
troop. You will notice that the cost is a little
higher than normal as each scout and leader will
get a Shetek t-shirt, the historical trail patch,
lunch supplies for the troops, and cub scouts will
be provided lunch and supper. See you there!

High Adventure Opportunities
Sioux Council is tentatively preparing to attend the Florida Sea Base in 2016.
New openings are available. Would you like to spend a week in the Florida
Keys, the Bahamas or even the US Virgin Islands in 2016? No deposit is
required YET, but if you are interested you need to contact Jason Cruse
IMMEDIATELY!
Venturing
CALLING ALL VENTURERS! The Sioux Council FUN weekend will be at Lewis
and Clark Scout Camp October 9-11! Planned activities include shooting sports, climbing, fishing, a movies both Friday and Saturday night, the L&C obstacle course (in your
favorite Halloween costume!), as well as both an Adviser Dutch oven cooking competition, and the Sioux Iron Chef!
Cost will be $25, and covers all food for the weekend EXCEPT supplies you will need
for the Dutch oven cook off and iron chef (though we will provide the secret ingredient!) Cabins are available for rent if your crew wishes. Plan for lots of FUN!

Specialized Scouting Program Finding Early Success
The Sioux Council is striving to educate diverse communities within the Sioux Falls area
about Scouting opportunities. Along with the character development education and fun
that Scouting provides, participation in Scouting also helps culturally-diverse families
and boys maintain pride in their heritage and culture. Since many new American
families are new to the concept of Scouting, the Sioux Council is working to help them
feel comfortable and familiar with all that it has to offer. Specialized cultural-initiative
programs help ease the transition for new American families who are not yet ready to
participate in traditional neighborhood community Scouting programs.
Pack 235 is a new Hispanic-initiative pack created in collaboration with Nuestra Señora
de Guadalupe/Our Lady of Guadalupe and Pueblo de Dios/Augustana Lutheran in Sioux
Falls, SD. The Pack meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm at Pueblo de Dios/
Augustana Lutheran. Within the first month of forming, the boys have been able to
attend Prairie Hills Day Camp, learn about camping, go fishing, and learn about good
nutrition and physical fitness. They are excited to continue learning, growing, and
having FUN as Cub Scouts!
Sioux Council staff is committed to working with leaders of other diverse communities
in the area to establish additional specialized cultural-initiative programs. They plan to
create new programming within the Muslim, African and Asian communities in Sioux
Falls. They also continue expanding Native American participation in Scouting.

STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
STEM is part of an initiative the Boy Scouts of America has taken
on to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their
sense of wonder about these fields through existing programs. From
archery to welding, Scouts can't help but enjoy the wide range of
STEM-related activities. To support this initiative, the BSA developed
the Nova Awards program so that youth members have fun and receive recognition for
their efforts.
Why STEM?
We live in a time of great opportunity. The spirit of innovation can help us overcome
challenges and ensure a prosperous and secure future. To seize this opportunity, we must
position ourselves at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and technological innovation.
Yet our country is falling behind in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
This is why many professionals and educators in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics believe the United States should do more now than ever to encourage students to enter STEM-related fields. These experts say our young people need strong
STEM skills to compete in the world market. We must work together to cultivate the
next generation of critical thinkers and innovators.
Ten-year employment projections by the U.S. Department of Labor show that of the 20
fastest-growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require significant mathematics or science preparation.
STEM Is the future
Fostering a strong STEM education is our best opportunity to boost the spirit of innovation. It's what we need to help ensure this country continues on a prosperous and secure
journey. STEM literacy is also critical because it has a profound and growing impact on
our day-to-day lives. Nature, space exploration, and any STEM-related interest reveals
to us the beauty and power of the world we inhabit.
What Are the Nova Awards?
The Boy Scouts of America developed the Nova Awards program to excite and expand a

Let’s Play Ball!
August 14 will be our annual Scout Night at the
Canaries. Look for LOTS of fun new things! This year,
scouts will have the opportunity to present the colors AND the
National Anthem, as well as participate in between inning
games and fun! The Canaries have set aside PRIME seating, behind home plate, for our
families.
After the game, scouts and their families can stay overnight on the field and enjoy a
movie on the scoreboard. Tickets are $9, which includes a patch, a food voucher is
available for $5, and breakfast will be $3.75.
All ticket orders will be through the Canaries box office. For more information and the
order form, please check the Scout Night at the Canaries flyer on our Sioux Council
website.

Tetonwana Lodge was founded on October 6th 1937 at a house in Brookings, SD by
John Bibby. John had been inducted along with two other scouts into the Order of the
Arrow while attending the Region 10 Canoe Base (now known as Charles L. Sommers).
In 1978 upon the absorption of Pheasant Council, the membership of Lyatonka Lodge
joined the membership of Tetonwana Lodge.
Tetonwana means for “Dweller of the Prairie” and the totem of the lodge is that of a
swimming turtle. The swimming turtle stands for “Leadership.”
The OA, founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson, began on July 16,
1915, at Treasure Island Scout Reservation. Originally, the society was called
Wimachtendienk Wingolauchsik Witahemui (or WWW), the indigenous Lenni Lenape
words for “brotherhood,” “cheerfulness,” and “service.”
New members are elected by others in their troops and will have opportunity to seal
their membership in the order at our Fall Conclave, which will be be held August 14-16
at Camp Iyataka’
We also have a contingent of 28 members attending the National Order of the Arrow
Conclave on August 2-9 at Michigan State University along with another 15,000 Scouts
and Scouters.
On September 11-13, Tetonwana will be hosting this years Section Conclave at Lewis
and Clark Scout Camp. The following six lodges make up our Section:

Bring your Troop flag to this “Class A” event at Lewis and Clark Scout Camp. This is a Lewis &
Clark Trail District event, however we will take the FIRST 300 signed up, regardless of district. All
food starting from the cracker barrel Friday night to the Continental breakfast Sunday morning is included.
Stations include something for everyone. Military equipment, Night Vision Goggles, Land Navigation, Survival Techniques, Military Communications, Physical Fitness Challenge, Gun Safety, First
Aid, Map Reading, Military Customs, Drill Ceremony, Lashings, and more.
All travel permits and Troop Health forms will remain with your Troop.
