December 20, 2015 4 From the Pastor’s Desk…. As we come together this weekend to celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we are about to celebrate Christmas; the birth of Jesus. We praise God like Mary and Elizabeth in the Gospel (today) for all His mighty deeds in our lives and we pray for the gift of peace and joy. This week I would like to share with you the reflection of Fr. Tom D’Albro (based on Philippians 4:4-7) preached at the Evening Prayer in the presence of the exposed Blessed Sacrament. Whenever I hear this passage from Philippians, this beautiful message that comes right from the heart of St. Paul (the scholars tell us that these Christians at Philippi were especially dear to him), whenever I hear these uplifting words, to be honest they leave me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I say right on, Paul: your words are positive, consoling and uplifting, without any doubt. And yet, I’m also tempted to say: wait just one minute, Paul. You’re telling us to “rejoice.” How do you do that in the kind of world that we live in today with its many intractable problems that cause so much suffering to so many? And then you tell us to “have no anxiety at all.” Would you please tell me how that is possible in this age of terrorism and economic uncertainty? We have eyes, just like everybody else; we see the very harsh realities all around the world. And we have ears that hear the sounds of violence and injustice that devastate and dislocate the lives of so many. How can we rejoice? How can we have no anxiety? The answer: we can because we also have faith! That doesn’t mean that we live in a bubble, in a fantasy world that is protected from the anxiety and fear and suffering that surround us. No, we live in the same world as everybody else. But with the eyes of our faith, we can also “see” beyond the darkness that still blankets our world. With the eyes of our Christian faith, we can see the dawning of a new day where there is no longer reason to have anxiety. We can see a new tomorrow where there is every reason to rejoice from sunrise to sunset. That’s what Christian hope is all about. That’s why St Paul had no hesitation as he invited his Philippian friends to rejoice without fear or anxiety. Yes, we have a faith that makes hope, not just one possibility among others: our faith makes hope inevitable! How do I know that? How did Paul know that? How can we be so trusting that God will make sure that a new day dawns for all of us? We can because God has already come through for us. We have tangible proof that our hope is real. And there it is, right there on the altar, the Eucharistic presence of our Lord. When Jesus rose from the dead, he made that possible. When Jesus rose from the dead, the curtain of the world was torn in half and revealed the beginning of a new world. That real Eucharistic presence of Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Savior is the sign to all of us, until the end of time, that the Lord is indeed “near to us.” That’s our faith! And it is only a matter of time until “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding” finally takes hold in the world. That’s our hope! Finally, on behalf of our priests, deacons and the parish staff I wish you and all your loved ones A Blessed Christmas! May God grant us peace and joy! Fr. John Francis fourth SUNDAY OF ADVENT ST.
