Based on the early novel by Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of
itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing
conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a
local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the
rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly
attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in
shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are
determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is
recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with
a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards
down.

Amber Heard may win over Johnny Depponscreen in The Rum Diary, but
offscreen she had to win over director Bruce Robinson to get the role. But
Bruce says he knew she was the one right away!
Playboy hosted the New York premiere of FilmDistrict's The Rum Diary last night,
and Bruce told OK! he was very pleased with the chemistry onscreen between
Johnny and Amber.
"I think it’s a pretty potent dynamic between them onscreen," he explained. "I
have no idea offscreen, obviously."
"But she’s a stunning-looking women, you know?" Bruce added about Amber.
"An amazing-looking women."
In fact, Bruce had an easy time casting Amber for the part.
"When she used to come into the office when we were casting the film, I used to
watch all the guys in the office to see what their reaction was to her," Bruce
shared with OK!. "She had to have the part. As a matter of fact, she got the part
the first time she walked in the door. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s Amber. The American
Dream girl.’ "
But he didn't let Amber know that!
"I made her suffer a bit and keep coming back and running a bit of film on her,"
he explained. "But she’s wonderful in the movie. You’ll see."
In The Rum Diary, Amber (Chenault) is engaged to Aaron Eckhart (Sanderson)
but pursued by Johnny (Paul Kemp).
So, who is better to kiss: Johnny or Aaron?
"Oh, that's impossible," Amber said with a laugh to reporters.
If only we had that problem!
Depp-th of stardom is great

What makes a star, I don’t know. But what is one, I know.
I saw one close up Monday night. And he created frenzy.
It was a screening of a film based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel “The Rum
Diary,” which opens Friday. Invitees bore names like Paz de la Huerta, Sean
Lennon, Gina Gershon, Christopher Meloni, Stella Schnabel, a barely
noticeable pirouetting, posing, prancing, posturing Betsey Johnson in long
ruffles, short leather, patterned shawl, neon lips and yellow hair.
Nobody much cared until Johnny Depp’s arrival created a shouting shoving
scrum. Masses pressed him tighter than Kim Kardashian’s push-up bra.
“He’s one of the biggest stars alive,” said the film’s director Bruce Robinson,
whom you recognized was highly selective -- if only from his wardrobe: long hair,
untucked shirt hanging over his pants, white-laced khaki sneakers.
“I’m playing a journalist named Paul Kemp,” easy, smiling Johnny told me. “It
takes place in the 1959-1960 period around the crushing conventions of
America’s late Eisenhower era. It deals with politics and the USA-versus-Cuba
time. Especially timely now because of today’s election news and what’s
happening in the world.”
Johnny was equally colorful. Permanent navy blue cap, which matched his navy
blue open-neck shirt, which matched his navy blue nail polish. Big ring on left
hand. Bigger ring on right hand. Assorted silver hanging medallion necklaces. I
felt his gray checked suit. Good material. The jacket had two vents.
Somehow we talked about his upcoming HBO show with Ricky Gervais.
“Ricky’s the funniest guy alive. I did a cameo for his HBO show ‘Life’s Too Short,’
which is out soon. You can’t believe things he made me do. In it I play a dwarf,
and he had me shove a midget down a toilet. He has this great sense of humor. I
loved working with him. He’s so hilarious, I’d marry him. My e-mail to him read:
‘Upon this debut I anticipate an immediate 95 percent plummet in my earnings.
Thank you for ruining my career.”
The pirate from the Caribbean recalls when it all began for him.
“I definitely remember my beginnings. It was so long ago, but who can ever
forget? My first thing was ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’ The movie came out in
1984. I had to audition with a lot of people they had lined up. I also remember
they brought me back a few times. If you ask was I good, I’d have to tell you, ‘No,
I wasn’t great.’ But, listen, I got the part.”
After-party sets off Deppth charge

Johnny Depp was a man of notes - not words - on Tuesday night.
The silver-screen stud was practically mute at the premiere of "The Rum Diary"
at the Museum of Modern Art, but he let his freak flag fly at the party that
followed - with a little help from his "Pirates of the Caribbean" muse, Rolling
Stone Keith Richards.
Depp declined to do print press interviews before the premiere, when the night's
emcee, film critic Elvis Mitchell, asked if he wanted to say a few words before the
move began. Depp deadpanned: "I'm okay for right now."
The star of the Hunter S. Thompson tale loosened up considerably after arriving
at the Playboy-sponsored after-party at Hiro Ballroom in the Maritime Hotel.
A source at the soiree says Depp and his security entered through the back door
of the Chelsea venue and headed to the balcony level of the nightspot.
The elevated area had been turned into a VIP zone. In it was Depp's costar Amber Heard, who had waxed poetic about her leading man's "talent and
passion" on the red carpet.
"He hung [out] up there nearly the whole night," says the insider, who tells us
actor Paul Bettany and his wife, actress Jennifer Connolly, were among those
who talked to the actor.
Depp spent much of the night chatting at the bar with rocker pal Richards, 67,
who attended with daughters Alexandra, 25, and Theodora, 26.
Johnny Depp & Keith Richards Impromptu Jam Session
At Rum Diaryth After Party
Thursday, October 27 2011
Maybe Johnny Depp is trying to send us a message!
Earlier this week, Johnny Depp randomly took to the stage at TheContinental
Club in Austin, TX to jam with Bill Carter & Billy Gibbons. It was a real treat for
everyone there, since Johnny doesn't really play all that often anymore.
But then, last night, Johnny pulled the same thing again at the afterparty for the
premiere of The Rum Diary. After spending the night avoiding the press and
refusing to do interviews, Johnny took to the stage at Hiro Ballroom in the
Maritime Hotel with none other than his pal Keith Richards to play a bit with his
JD Band.
Of course, someone had their camera phone handy, so we've got some video of
the impromptu performance for you here!
Twice in one week, Johnny? Are you missing the music? We can understand
that. Robert Pattinson is feeling the same way. Maybe you both need to cut out
some time for yourselves to head into the studio, work on your music some more.
MAYBE YOU GUYS COULD DO IT TOGETHER?!
Wait, no. It's just too much to hope for!

By: Bill McCuddy/ Thursday, October 27 2011
Dear “Rum Diary”: Tonight I sang with Keith Richards!
That’s what Johnny Depp might scribble into his bedside journal after jamming
out with the Rolling Stones legend at “The Rum Diary” after-party in Manhattan
that raged into the wee hours yesterday morning.
The Maritime Hotel mini-gig happened when the “Pirates of the Caribbean” father
and son came down from a VIP area and joined Depp’s JD Band onstage,
causing the camera-phone-snapping crowd to rush forward to Keef and Johnny,
both behind guitars, belting out the old blues standard, “Key to the Highway.”
Celebs at the Museum of Modern Art screening and after-party included Depp’s
“Diary” love interest,Amber Heard, Paul Bettany and wife Jennifer
Connelly. Betsey Johnson, Zoe Kravitz,Amanda Setton, Patti Smith, Gina
Gershon, Lili Taylor and Cuba Gooding Jr. Depp spent much of the night
chatting with Richards, with wife Patti Hansen.
The party was co-sponsored by Playboy — probably because Heard starred in
“The Playboy Club,” the failed NBC series about bunnies in the ’60s. Too late to
cancel and get your deposit back, huh, Hugh Hefner?
“The Rum Diary” has Depp once again playing the late journalist Hunter S.
Thompson during a period in the early 1960s when the gonzo writer worked at a
newspaper in Puerto Rico.
Depp previously played a Thompson-inspired character in Terry Gilliam’s 1998
movie based on another of the writer’s classic books, “Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas.”
The flick, which also stars Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi, opens Friday.

Last night, at the Playboy-hosted premiere of "The Rum Diary" at MoMA,
attendees were excited to see Johnny Depp, Amber Heard and the film, but,
most importantly, wanted to share their plans for Halloween. Victoria's Secret
model Behati Prinsloo confessed that she is "nervous" for Halloween,
considering she wore her best costume ever last year: "I went as the 'Day of the
Dead' kind-of bride. My friend did my makeup and it was amazing. This year, I'm
really nervous to top it, so I don't know. I have this cool hat with a face on it that's
really crazy, so I'm thinking of doing something with it, but I literally have no idea
yet."
Betsey Johnson, on the other hand, knows exactly what she is doing: "I'm gonna
dress up in my bikini on the beach. Finally!" Where is she going? Who knows!
Johnson had to ask her assistant, "Cabos San Lucas. I've never been there
before." Apparently, the fashion designer known for closing her runway shows
with a cartwheel likes any place that is warm. How, then, did she survive an
October night with only an Alexander McQueen scarf for warmth? "I think my
work is hot."
As a series of lights flashed behind us, Betsey screamed, "Oh my, Johnny!" and
ran under the press barrier, pushing me out of the way and then grabbing my
arm with joy as she craned her neck in hopes of seeing the film's star: Johnny
Depp. As excited by the demonstration of 69-year-old Betsey's flexibility as the
possibility of seeing the star in the flesh, I followed her. "Oh! It's not Johnny
Depp, It's Keith Richards!" I told her. Richards had attempted to sneak in to the
film discretely, as Twiggy had a few minutes before, by wearing sunglasses and
avoiding the press. (Sorry guys, we saw you.)
As Betsey jumped under yet another rope to go chase down Keith Richards, we
spoke to Depp's co-star, Amber Heard who plays Chenault, a Connecticut-born
blonde bombshell dating Depp's on-screen rival Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart).
Heard first appears in the film swimming in the nude, and Depp's character Paul
Kemp confuses her for a mermaid. On the red carpet, the starlet wore a black
long-sleeved Jean Paul Gaultier dress - appropriate for the 1950's era of the film.
Her character Chenault paraded around in bathing suits and revealing summer
dresses, which Heard admits to do as well. She relates to her character's
personal style, "They're actually very similar. I wear a lot of those clothes."
Of her character, Heard explains: "I take parts that I feel a connection to and in
this case, Chenault is a rebel and she just happens to look like the opposite of
that. She encompasses this idea of the American dream and the 1950s, 1960s
possession of the kind of perfect housewife. She might look like that but she’s a
rebel underneath and I certainly relate to that." The same is true for her co-star,
Heard explained, "The beautiful thing about Johnny is that it’s almost impossible
to pin him down into a certain category or put him in a box. It’s impossible to
categorize him and that’s what makes him so special." Looks like the stars of
"The Rum Diary" have something in common.

Johnny Depp Finished With Keith Richards!
By: Cristina Gibson & Melissa Unger/ Wednesday, October 26th 2011
One more reason to love Johnny Depp. He's one multitalented dude.
"I didn't know until I started working with him what an amazing painter he
was…what an amazing musician he is," Rum Diary director Bruce
Robinson told us last night at the New York premiere. "He is really like a
Renaissance man. He can do everything. He can play any instrument. He is a
great oil painter."
Depp has even painted portraits of his Pirates of the Caribbean costar Keith
Richards (who was also on hand last night), and gave one them away while
filming his latest movie.
"He gave me a beautiful painting 8 feet square of his friend Keith Richards. So, it
is on my wall in England," the director explained. "It is this massive painting, oil
painting, of Keith Richards."
Wonder if the Rolling Stone rocker knows that Johnny's depicted him on
canvas?
But while he gave up a painting of Richards, their collaborations are far from
over.
At the Playboy after party at Hiro Ballroom, Johnny and Keith even joined the
band on stage. "Johnny was on guitar and Keith was on guitar and vocals for a 6
minute set," an eyewitness tells us. "The entire crowd rushed the stage with
camera phones out to capture this iconic moment."
Clearly, these guys know how to party.
"He likes red wine and so do I," the director said earlier on the red carpet, adding
that they never got super drunk during filming. "We did get drunk a couple of
occasions, but never excessively. The work is too hard. You just can't do it. But
both of us are very fond of red wine."
We bet everyone had a few glasses last night to celebrate!

Johnny Depp wore in his signature shades for the NYC premiere of The Rum
Diary last at the Museum of Modern Art. The Big Apple debut of the film was its
second premiere this month. Just a couple of weeks ago, Johnny was in LA with
his castmates Amber Heard and Aaron Eckhart to unveil the off-kilter comedy on
the West Coast. Amber made a quick trip east for the affair, having stepped out
Monday at the Hollywood Film Awardsin Beverly Hills, where she accepted a
Hollywood Spotlight Award. Johnny also had his close friend — and the man who
inspired Captain Jack Sparrow — Keith Richards by his side at the event, and
New Yorkers like actress Zoe Kravitz also turned up for the screening. The Rum
Diary gives Johnny the opportunity to revisit his role as a thinly veiled Hunter S.
Thompson from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the actor is reportedly
planning to play yet another literary figure, Dr. Seuss, in an upcoming biopic.

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Johnny Depp confirmed he will shortly saddle up in the role
of Tonto in “The Lone Ranger” film, but don’t expect him to play Armie Hammer’s
(who will play the famed cowboy) sidekick in the traditional sense.
“I had some initial ideas for Tonto that I thought might be interesting in terms of
how to take a character that, throughout history has been sort of pushed to the
background or made the sidekick of the white man,” Johnny told Access
Hollywood on Tuesday night as he hit the premiere of his latest film, “The Rum
Diary” in New York City. “I think we’ve successfully kicked that in the a**.”
Johnny’s latest film, “The Rum Diary,” based on a novel from his late friend
Hunter S. Thompson, hits theaters on Friday and the actor himself was much
more a part of the filmmaking process than just the star.
Johnny, who became friends with the famed gonzo journalist, previously told
Vanity Fair he actually found the manuscript for “The Rum Diary” in Hunter’s
home in the 1990s.
The book wasn’t published until 1998, and Johnny has been working on the film
since 1997.
“It’s a beautiful sort of closure for me, it’s a beautiful closure for Hunter’s, all the
people who were close to Hunter ‘cause we worked on this from basically 1997
until now,” Johnny told Access. “We lost Hunter in 2005 and we ended up getting
it done and it’s all he wanted. It’s all we wanted, so we did it.”

The Big Apple premiere of "The Rum Diary," based on Hunter S. Thompson's
novel, was hosted by Playboy on Tuesday night. Wearing his signature shades
and hat, Johnny Depp and sexy co-star Amber Heard walked the red carpet at
New York City's Museum of Modern Art.
The East Coast event marked the film's second premiere this month -- just a few
weeks ago, Johnny and the cast attended the Los Angeles debut.
Playboy also hosted the after-party, held at Hiro Ballroom inside The Maritime
Hotel. During the bash, Depp and his former "Pirates" co-star and pal Keith
Richards took to the stage for an impromptu performance.
Playboy magazine has had a long history with the man behind the project, Hunter
S. Thompson, having previously profiled the author, in addition to publishing
several of his works, including "Scar Strangled Banner," (May 1988) and "Fear
and Justice in the Kingdom of Sex" (January 2004).
Thompson committed suicide in 2005.
"The Rum Diary" pours into theaters Friday, Oct. 28.

Amber Heard made a stylish appearance at New York Premiere premiere of her
new film‘The Rum Diary’ at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC on October 25.
Rather than going for a colorful short dress, the 25-year-old actress Amber
Heard chose to keep it simple yet stylish in a dramatic black floor-length
dress featuring long sleeves for a covered look.
She wore a chic evening dress from Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2011
collection with a matching glossy belt cinched at the waist. Bringing a flash of
color to her dark look was a hot pink lip shade and a dash of bronze eyeshadow.
Amber styled her short hair in glossy blonde coif showing off her Canturi earrings
and brought some old Hollywood glamor to her look. She accessorized her dress
with a Monique Pean ring and toted Christian Louboutin bag.
Finishing off her look were a pair of black peep-toe pumps by Jimmy Choo. So,
what do you think of Amber’s look? HIT or MISS?
Johnny Depp Speaks
th
By: Jeffrey Slonim/ Wednesday, October 26 2011
F Johnny Depp. The minute I arrived at MoMA for the debut of The Rum
Diary (sponsored byPlayboy), I heard from the army of just-out-of-college
reporters on the red carpet that Depp wouldn’t be talking. “You can’t hear him
anyway,” I said. Of all the soft-spoken stars, Depp is the softest. So many times
I’ve put the question out there, put the tape recorder out there, and then not been
sure that he was actually saying anything despite his moving lips. And not talking
to print media at all was such an odd move considering he plays a reporter in the
damned film.
The first big-name guest was Keith Richards and his oversize rats nest of hair.
He barreled by wrapped up in his beautiful wife Pamela Hanson. He didn't stop,
which ratcheted up the feeling that none of us reporters would be getting
anything. On her way inside, model Behati Prinsloo (big hat, impish grin)
explained the cavalcade of gorgeous women bum-rushing the screening room. “I
am a Johnny Depp fan,” she told Dispatches. “I don’t think there is any girl that is
not a Johnny Depp fan. Is there?"
Depp, who apparently once met Hunter Thompson in a bar out west, where
Thompson was carrying a cattle prod, had a smudge of white schmutz on his
window-pane jacket. Depp’s matching vest had a pocket watch dangling from a
gold chain and he had another swinging from the upper right pocket of the coat.
He wore chunky rings on two fingers, and some fingernails were painted with
dark blue polish. There was a cap and a mustache and chin scruff. He wore neat
banker's glasses in light blue and said that Thompson was “the Brando of
journalists.” Every media outlet was shoving in booms to hear.
Director Bruce Robinson donned a translucent version of Depp's glasses, so I
asked about them. “He bought me these at a place that sells antique glass
frames, and they polish them up,” he said. Depp's good friend Patty Smith told
Dispatches that she joined Depp and Robinson in Puerto Rico and that film
making was hard work. “We were in the middle of the jungle with a lot of
mosquitos,” she said. Was Robinson bitten? Not so much. “They don’t like
booze, mosquitoes. Puerto Rico is the epicenter of rum production on earth,” he
said.
Amber Heard was flawless in the film and as perfect in person with bright pink
lips. “It was a dream,” she said of working with Depp. "That beautiful car... fun.”
Glamorous crowd at the theater. The film? Aaron Eckhart as the PR sleaze is
sensational. Heard lights up the screen with sex appeal and some vertical pantsoff dancing with Depp and Eckhart (one at a time and not in that order). Depp
looks good. But the episodic nature of the piece makes the film a desperately
long two hours, although Puerto Rico, the car, the LSD scene, and Eckhart's
house on the beach are must-sees.

Johnny Depp in the Caribbean Sea? We like the sound of that. And it’s not what
you’re thinking, this has nothing to do with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ …
Finally a movie where we can oh-and-ah at Johnny Depp without him covered in
rags or scissors! Johnny plays a tormented journalist, Paul Kemp who leaves the
chaos of NYC for the palm trees — and rum — of Puerto Rico.
Based on a the book written by Hunter S. Thompson, Rum Diary is full of
adventure. It’s nice to see him play a character that’s relatable rather than
someone who exists in another world. And his romance with Chenault (Amber
Heard) is exciting and enjoyable to watch.

Synopsis: The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant
journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New
York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels
to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan
Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rumsoaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber
Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron
Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development
deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are
determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the
wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest
unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for
the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards
down.

Johnny Depp was all over iPOP this week, touting his anticipated turn in "The
Rum Diary," Bruce Robinson's adaptation of the early Hunter S. Thompson novel
that hits theaters this Friday.
First we caught up with him in Texas at the Austin Film Festival where he was on
hand to screen the film and receive the festival’s inaugural Extraordinary
Contribution to Film Acting Award. A few days later, he landed in Manhattan to
attend the NYC premiere and jam alongside close friend Keith Richards at the
raucous afterparty hosted by none other than Playboy.
Other stars popped up on iPOP this week as well, including young Oscarnominee Abigail Breslin at the "Janie Jones" NYC premiere, James Franco in
Austin to debut his film "Sal" and Madonna in London screening "W.E." at the
city's film festival.
