MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL Dear Parishioners, Bologna is a lovely city in Italy, sometimes called “Italy’s kitchen”. It is famous for tortellini, and of course Bolognese sauce. The city has one of the oldest universities in Europe. It is because of the large university that St. Dominic established the foundation of his Order in Bologna. I found the city very different than Rome, Florence or Milan. It seemed quieter, and certainly cleaner. As I was trying to make my way to the bus stop from the Basilica of St. Dominic to return to the central train station, I happened upon the Basilica of San Petronio. San Petronio is the patron saint of Bologna. This Basilica also serves as the cathedral for the archbishop of Bologna. It is a magnificent structure with a major restoration currently taking place. While there were a great number of visitors in the church, it was not as noisy as one might think. There is so much to raise one’s mind to God that one is awestruck more than desiring to speak. Sometimes I take a good hearted joking about the number of first class relics we have at St. Michael. San Petronio has an entire chapel filled with relics. It was a nice visit to Bologna, even if only for a few hours. God Bless you, Father Joe Callipare TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Ex 17:8-13 / 2 Tm 3:14—4:2 / Lk 18:1-8 Juanita Schwartz (+) Intentions of the Parish Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, Italy.
