Whether you can help once a month or just one time, all help is greatly appreciated. Please sign-up at the Welcome Center or contact the Church Office. Thank You … To everyone who made a financial donation towards the African Missions Trip, which allowed Pastor Terry to go in April with his son Andrew and Bob Lee. To Joe Pomponio and Matt Sawyer for all of the preparation and planning of the Church Work Day on May 1 and to everyone who helped that day to make the flower beds so lovely, the windows so shiny, and the many areas so organized. Many hands do make light work! Congratulations … We‘ve introduced a new way to keep everyone in our Church Family ―up to date‖ on church events, prayer needs, and more… In Touch @ FHCoG. You have probably seen it every Friday in your email inboxes. We hope you take a moment each week to read it, get caught up, and plan for things to come. We also hope that you will find ways to grow in your faith, get involved, and reach out to one another and the community … sharing the love of Jesus! Note: Be sure that we have your most up-to-date email address. If you are NOT receiving the In Touch, complete one of the Connect Cards on Sunday morning and include your email address or contact the church office – [email protected]. PP AA GG E E3 3 CHURCH NEWS (cont.) Summer Youth Intern: Zach Emery Hey everyone! I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and how excited I am to be able to work with the Youth Ministry here at FHCoG. Special Anniversary… June 12 10-Year Anniversary of the Nelson Family @ FHCoG! This summer will mark 10 years since Pastor Jason and Anne Nelson joined us! God has granted me this awesome experience to be able to be a part of His ministry and to be a part of your church family! I can‘t wait to get to know everyone here personally! I wanted to share a little bit of my testimony for all of you. I grew up in a Christian family—going to church almost every Sunday out in Oxford (I was too young to remember the name of the church). My family moved to Clarkston Community Church when I was around 10 years old. I attended Clarkston‘s children ministry nights through 5th grade and then transitioned into their youth group. Now, my 6th grade through 8th grade years weren‘t my best. I was very loud and rude during Bible study and was just there to be with my friends. Many times I had to be taken out of class to be talked to about my behavior. But here is where I know God‘s plan was in motion... I called my youth pastor actually looking for a summer job so I could have some extra money for all the junk food I wanted! But through some confusion and misunderstanding on both ends, he thought I was asking to volunteer as a Counselor in Training (CIT) for one of the youth groups! Too embarrassed to correct him, I started being a CIT that year, not realizing what effect it was going to have on me. I fell in love with it! Now, six years later. I am still a counselor at Clarkston, and my love for youth ministry grows every day. Ever since that misunderstanding between my Youth Pastor and me, I realize that it was God‘s full intention for that to happen. God called me to youth ministry that day! God truly works in weird and unexpected ways! I can‘t thank Him enough for all the opportunities He has given me. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for me during this internship! They‘ve added three beautiful children in those 10 years—Abby, Jon, & Lydia, along with many accomplishments, memories, and relationships. We will be celebrating with them at a recep- tion in Kirby Hall following the worship on June 12 . We hope you will be part of this day with the Nelsons. Please share what they have meant to you by way of a card, email, note, and/or a big hug of thanks! N EW 2016 FHCoG SCHOLARSHIPS Applications & Guidelines are now available for eligible students. Pick up a copy at the Church Office, Welcome Center, or go to the Youth Website: www.revolution.fhchurchofgod.org (Click on the scholarship tab) Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God‘s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV) PAGE 4 SUMMER 2016 CHURCH NEWS (cont.) Travel with CBH ...and see the world from heaven's view! If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then it might be said that seeing is worth 1,000 pictures. But more than just seeing the power of a full sensory, first-hand experience cannot be over estimated in its ability to create lasting impressions on ones ethos for a global understanding of ministry. That‘s what our CBH Expeditions are all about. Journey to the Holy Land: Israel and Jordan January 4-16, 2018 Prices coming soon The Holy Land. It is a tiny plot of earth that has been the hinge of history and more. It is a tiny plot of land upon which Jesus, the very Word of God, became flesh. The world still echoes with the sound of His voice. The Holy Land still carries the sense of His presence. Be sure to pack your Bible. You will see the stories come to life. To reserve your spot, give us a call! 800-848-2464 CBH on Expedition: India Spring, 2016 $3,500.00 India is a place full of people, languages, cultures and religions. This will be a smaller group and we will visit the radio studio at The Shelter in Cuttack, where the CBH-India team produces a reader's theatre that speaks specifically into the story-telling culture of the region. You'll hear the stories of lives changed through Seeker's Conferences, experience the culture first-hand, and be an encouragement to your Christian family around the world. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) PAGE 6 SUMMER 2016 CWC MINISTRY NEWS The Christian Women‘s Connection (CWC) Ministry held a Journey to the Cross evening on March 10. The 24 ladies in attendance enjoyed some light refreshments and fellowship time before Jill Bernard, Bobbi Pomponio, and Robyn Ritzema each told their faith story. Interestingly, each accepted Jesus when they were 8 or 9 years old. Very inspiring stories! Thanks to each of them for sharing their emotional journeys with us! BAKE SALE Thank you to all the ladies who came out on March 17 to help make the 20 lemon pound cakes for the Easter bake sale! And thanks to everyone who ordered a lemon cake, contributed baked goods, and the many who purchased items at the sale; $633 was made from the sale! SOUPY SALES Also, a big thank you to everyone who placed orders for any of the various soups that CWC made and sold in February! We have had many rave reviews on how delicious these soups were. The sale was a success and raised $959! REMINDER: YOUR CHANGE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE… WHO’S NEXT? If you should need a friend that's true Then Christ is the best friend for you For he is faithful, true and strong, And He will never get it wrong. This summer our Kidz Time kids will be learning all about the foundational truths that our faith is built upon. By learning these foundational truths, the kids will ensure strong success as they grow in their faith. He'll always answer when you call; He'll always be there when you fall To comfort, heal and hold your hand; To pick you up and help you stand. During ―Basic Training‖, the kids will follow Frankie, a young man who is determined to become part of the Army. Frankie‘s grandfather, ―G-Pop‖, is a World War II veteran who has a lot to teach him about being in the army. However, ―G-Pop‖ ends up learning so much more from Frankie than he ever could have imagined. He learns lessons about salvation, worship, prayer, the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and sharing our faith. We hope that our Kidz Time kids don‘t miss a single week of ―Basic Training‖ this summer. Kidz Time will be offered at 10:00am on the 2nd & 3rd Sundays from June – August. This friend I'm telling you about Has truly got a lot of clout; He's the Lord and King of Kings Creator; Maker of all things. His name is Jesus; risen Christ And He is great in love and might All you need to do is pray Ask Him into your heart today. by Belinda van Rensburg A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need. Proverbs 17:17 (NLT) WHO’S NEXT? FOR THE KIDS ... PAGE 9 PAGE 10 SUMMER 2016 MISSIONS UPDATEs TEACH HONDURAS Following are recent posts from the Pinares High School / Colegio Pinares Facebook page. To keep abreast of the school that Cathy Bindschadler has partnered to start in Hondorus, follow on Facebook or at www.TeachHonduras.org. April 3: We left a few houses with materials, but we did not have the time to do the physical labor for them. They came together and did a beautiful job finishing the roofing on the houses; they added a vent for the stove and improved the walls...they even built seats and a shelter for a church!!!! How awesome is that!! April 26 Post: Yay!!!!!!!! Mayra, one of our students, got her Visa to visit the United States. She will be in Michigan May 27 to June 10, and we have tons of fun things planned for her, as well as a fundraising event for the school. This will be her first and, most likely only, visit ever to the United States. We are so happy!!! God is good!! Please keep her and professor Luis in your prayers when they travel. She is a minor and they could still potentially turn her away at customs. May 16 Post: A late post, but here is our Mother's Day celebration. Our students wrote and performed a play about the tragedies of alcoholism and domestic violence against women. Some of the girls also performed a choreographed dance and they showed a PowerPoint presentation. It was a very wonderful and super special day to celebrate mothers! May18 Post: Last week we had a visit from a team that was in town from the US; they came and spent some time with our students and taught some English lessons. We love having these opportunities for our students; having conversations with native English speakers allows them to perfect their accents and expand their vocabulary. Also, professor Luis had the idea for a work project for them. We are currently borrowing a building from the town to hold classes in, and we want to return the generosity by helping to improve the building. Luis noticed that the doors were dilapidated and rotten so the students took it upon themselves to build and replace them. They did a fantastic job!!! Fund-raiser to support Cathy Bindschadler’s School in Honduras WHO’S NEXT? PAGE 11 MISSIONS UPDATEs (CONT.) Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Yard Sale that the Costa Rica Missions Trip team held May 1214. The sale brought in $1,700.00! Special thanks to Vicki Westcott for the MANY LONG HOURS spent organizing this sale—GREAT JOB! Missions Informational Luncheon: Here are some highlights from the luncheon that was held on April 3 … FHCoG: Our church‘s goal is to increase our support financially and in the number of people taking trips with missions locally and internationally. Costa Rica: Heart for Honduras pulled out of Costa Rica because it wasn‘t meeting their mission. FHCoG is considering going every 2 years now and moving out into the country. It‘s highly recommended as a first missions trip. Honduras: Teach Honduras has had land donated by French nuns for building a new school. Two other high schools in the area are being closed by the government, which leaves only the Pineras High School. So the school is going to be in high demand. Between $20,000-$50,000 is needed to build the new school, which will consist of classrooms, bathrooms and an office. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 (NIV) The 2016 Summer Olympics will occur from August 5-21 and are a great opportunity to remember the Biblical symbolism that each color of the Olympic rings holds as well as the white background on the flag. In the Bible, the colors symbolize: Blue: the waters of baptism, heaven Black: sin, suffering and death Red: the blood of Jesus, redemption The Olympic rings represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. Yellow: something of value, gold When the Rings were created in 1913, Green: growing, fruitful and life the five colors combined with the white background represented the colors of White: purity and righteousness the flags of all nations at that time, without exception. www.olympic.org PAGE 12 SUMMER 2016 UGANDA FOODS TO ENJOY The number of people living in Uganda‘s cities is rising, as the young move away from the countryside to seek work. However, most Ugandans still lead a rural lifestyle; 87% of the population still live in the countryside and grow their own foods. And with electricity both unreliable and expensive where it is available, over 90% of Ugandans rely on charcoal or firewood for cooking. The following recipes are frequently eaten in Uganda because of the ease and low cost in making them and can be found at www.guiltykitchen.com. Ugandan Beans Yield: 5 servings 1 1/2 cups dried rea beans 1 large tomato 1 small bell pepper (or 1/2 small bell pepper) 1 small red onion 2 Tbsp salt 1/2 cup cooking oil 1 garlic clove 1/4 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp tumeric 1/4 tsp ginger 1. Sort beans and remove any rocks, bad beans, etc. Our girls put the beans in the basket pictured and toss them into the air to remove dust and dirt particles. They then pick through carefully to remove bad beans and rocks. Put beans in a pot of water to soak for 8 hours. 2. Strain beans and add clean water. The water should be about 1 inch above the beans. Put beans over fire for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until soft. Water should be absorbed at this point. 3. When beans are almost done cooking, add 2 Tbsp salt (5 minutes before they‘re done). 4. While cooking, dice tomato, bell pepper, and onion. 5. Remove beans from fire and put aside. 6. In a fresh pot, add oil for frying. Wait about 3-5 minutes for oil to heat up. Add onion, garlic, and bell pepper & stir until onions are translucent. 7. Then add tomato and seasonings. Add beans and cook for 5-10 minutes. 8. Serve with Posho, optional Posho (poe-show) Yield: 5 servings 4 cups maize (corn) flour 6 cups boiling water 1. Heat water to boiling in a pot. Slowly pour the maize flour into the boiling water and whisk to avoid forming lumps. 2. Stir continuously with a large wooden spoon and mash so that lumps don‘t form. Keep adding flour until it is thicker than mashed potatoes. Cook for 3 -4 minutes while stirring continuously. 3. Serve immediately with beans (see above recipe) Jesus answered, ―It is written: ‗Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.‖ Matthew 4:4 (NIV) WHO’S NEXT? PAGE 13 RECIPE: Stubb’s BBQ Bacon Jam Many people requested this recipe (made by Vicki Westcott) on Football Sunday… So here it is… This condiment is extremely easy to make and can be spread on almost anything. . . brats, biscuits, hamburgers, waffles, chicken sandwiches, breakfast tacos, grilled cheese and on and on and ......... This is sweet, salty, spicy and spreadable. You can also finish this in the crock pot and keep it warm all game as your guests dig in. Stubb‘s BBQ Bacon Jam Ingredients: 1.5 lbs 1 medium 1 medium 3 1/3 cup 3 Tbsp 1/2 cup 8 oz 2 Tbsp bacon yellow onion (diced) red onion (diced) garlic cloves (minced) apple cider vinegar maple syrup (use the good stuff) dark brown sugar dark ale style beer Stubbs BBQ seasoning cayenne pepper (optional) Directions: Sprinkle bacon pieces with Stubbs BBQ Seasoning. Cook in oven at 350O F or in cast iron pan over medium heat until brown and nearly crisp. Remove bacon from pan and place on paper towels. Drain all but 1 Tbsp of bacon grease from pan and cook diced onions and minced garlic until onions are translucent. This takes approximately 6-8 minutes over medium low heat. While the onions are heating, chop your bacon into 1/2 inch pieces. MMMmmmmmmmm Bacon. Try not to eat half. After 6-8 minutes, add the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, beer, maple syrup and bring to a boil. This takes about 2 minutes. Using a wooden spoon, make sure to scrape the bottom of the pan to get any brown bits off the bottom. Add bacon pieces and stir. Cook over medium high heat until glaze thickens. (10-15 minutes) Once the bacon jam reduces and becomes thick, remove from heat. You can pulse in a food processor (2-3 pulses) to make the jam easily spreadable or leave as is. I prefer mine with a little chunk. Either way, you will love this on biscuits, toast, bratwurst, hamburgers, chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches or on a shoe. It's that addicting. This has sweetness, some salty goodness and a little heat that all works great together. You can store this in an airtight container (in the fridge) for up to 4 weeks. (originally from: http://mgoblog.com/content/mgobbq-bacon-jaaaaaaaaam) Then Jesus declared, ―I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.‖ John 6:35 (NIV) PPAAGGEE 1140 S U FMAML LE R2 02 10 41 6 HEALTH & WELLNESS The 5th Annual Cipriano Classic EVENING RUN June 3, 2016 Farmington Family YMCA 28100 Farmington Rd, 6:45 pm — Welcome & Stretches 7:00 pm—Race Begins The Cipriano Classic 5K Fun Run & Walk is an event to benefit the Cipriano Children's Trust. The Cipriano family continues to be overwhelmed by the community's response and genuine and heartfelt kindness. Per Rose Cipriano, ―We very much appreciate all the love and support from the people of Farmington Hills and the surrounding communities. Tanner and Isabella continue to thrive in school and in extracurricular activities. While we are grateful for how far we have come as a family, our continued focus is on Salvatore. Although Sal has made great strides in his extremely complicated recovery, he still has a long journey ahead.
