Arriving upon land west of the Mississippi in 1798 – which was, at that time, part of the upper Louisiana
Territory and under Spanish rule – was the Kentucky native William Murphy. Murphy was searching for the
ideal site to relocate his family, and as the tradition goes, with the aid of a local Indian he came to find a
spring near the now-standing St. Francois County Courthouse. Deciding that this was an excellent place to set
up home, Murphy acquired a Spanish land grant, allowing him and his family to establish a settlement along
the St. Francois River.
In his travels back to Kentucky, Murphy passed away, leaving it up to his wife, Sarah Barton Murphy, and
their grown sons to establish the settlement – which they did when arriving at the site around 1800. Named
Murphy’s Settlement, Sarah Barton Murphy is known to have assembled the premier Protestant Sunday
School west of the Mississippi River. Due to Spanish law barring any religious services that were not of
Roman Catholic tradition, Murphy and her students orchestrated the learning in secret.
A post office in Murphy’s Settlement opened in 1817, followed by the annexation of the land to the United
States through the Louisiana Purchase – creating the state of Missouri. With the advent of this, David Murphy
made a contribution of 52 acres of land for the installation of the county seat of what was soon to be St.
Francois County in 1822. The name of the town, Farmington, was selected in 1825, with incorporation as a
town granted in 1836 – soon becoming a village 20 years later in 1856.
In the mid-1800s, Farmington enjoyed growth and economic well-being through the building of the historic
Plank Road, which stretched from Pilot Knob to Ste. Genevieve. The road was built to transport supplies from
the shipping facilities located along the river to the mines and to move the mine’s iron ore to the shipping
facilities. The route was soon taken over by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad.
The first public school was constructed in 1870, and, in 1879, Farmington gained the recognition as a FourthClass City – an accolade that was surpassed in 1981, when Farmington became a Third-Class City.
Laying down roots more than two centuries ago, Farmington has certainly become a prosperous Midwestern
city. Since its 1860 population of 500, the city has transformed into a community of more than 19,000. Its
economic sector has continued to thrive and its educational institutions and medical centers maintain the
highest level of quality. Holding tight to its values, residents and businesses take pleasure in living in “The
City of Tradition and Progress.”
Farmington’s strategic location in southeast Missouri puts it within proximity to the major downtown St.
Louis market (69 miles), along with the conveniences of several transportation methods, making residential
and business commute trouble-free. More than 105 miles of public streets wind through Farmington, in
addition to a regional airport and other public and private transportation services.
Farmington Regional Airport is a city-owned, public-use airport situated on approximately 170 acres of land.
Currently, the airport features a 75’ x 4,221’ runway with 100’ displaced threshold on the south end, pilot
controlled lighting, instrument approaches and self-serve or assisted fueling. In 2009, the city constructed a
new terminal facility that offers 24-hour access to a pilot’s lounge complete with vending areas, shower
facilities, laundry, flight planning center and a conference room. Work on the parallel taxiway, connecting
lanes and apron improvements are scheduled for completion. Expansions and improvements are frequent at
this community facility.
The Union Pacific Railroad owns east-west tracks extending from the main north-south line at Bismarck to
Park Hills/Bonne Terre, in the northern development area of Farmington, to Ste. Genevieve, and connections
to the Burlington Northern Railroad. Several sections have extensive sidings in place.
Utilized mostly by the area’s elderly and handicapped residents, the Southeast Missouri Transportation
Service provides transport for those requesting the service. The Southeast Missouri Transportation Services
offers one bus solely for Farmington area residents, plus one bus that serves the entire county.
On top of all this, Farmington is home to a number of additional transportation services, including two taxi
services within the city – as well as a handful of others that lie within county lines – and services operated by
such entities as nursing homes and medical centers.
There is so much to see and do in this Southeast Missouri region – the biggest question is how and where to
spend your day! Wineries, historic sites, cultural channels and entertainment venues for the whole family can
all be found in and near the Farmington community.
Take part in tastings, enjoy a tour of the vineyards or just relax with some delicious food and live music at one
of the area’s many wineries. Within 20 minutes of downtown are nearly 10 wineries – great venues for
friends, fun and relaxation.
History buffs can revel in the area’s interesting historical sites, including the Missouri Mines Historical Site
and the Fort Davidson State Historic Site. The Missouri Mines Historic Site, situated in Park Hills, is the site
of an old milling complex that was utilized by the St. Joe Minerals Corporation during the time that the state’s
“Lead Belt” manufactured approximately 80 percent of the U.S.’s mined lead.
In 1864, the now serene Arcadia Valley in nearby Iron County was the site of the Battle of Pilot Knob. While
en route to the St. Louis region, Confederate Major General Sterling Price and his army of 12,000 men
attacked the poorly protected Fort Davidson, a Union post of 1,450 men overseen by General Thomas Ewing,
Jr. During this large battle, the Confederates lost around 1,000 men. Patrons today can view the preserved Fort
Davidson and Pilot Knob battlefield, along with the Visitor Center, which is highlighted by exhibits, a
research library and more. A picnic area and playground are also available on-site.
For some performing arts entertainment, whether it be theatrical, musical or dance, make sure to visit the
Centene Center. The center is situated adjacent to the Farmington Civic Center and offers auditorium seating
for more than 700. Small concerts, local drama performances and more can all be found here.
Additional sites for family-friendly entertainment include a family fun center, offering bowling and arcade
games; an indoor skating rink; movie theater; and the St. Francois County Raceway, one of the top small-track
facilities in this Missouri region.
After a day of taking in the features of Farmington, it’s easy to work up an appetite. No problem, because the
area is home to an array of restaurants, offering fast food fixes and casual dining, ethnic cuisine and sweet
treats. There is certainly something to please every palate in Farmington.
For a comfortable rest, the area is home to a number of lodging options. Economic rooms and suites are
available at one of the local hotels or motels, while more private accommodations can be found at nearby bed
and breakfast facilities.
Farmington and its surrounding area are full of recreational opportunities, making it easy to fill a day with
both active and passive activities. The Farmington Parks and Recreation Department oversees the area’s park
system, provides sport offerings – including adult softball, baseball and soccer – and hosts a number of
community events.
In addition to the area’s largest festival, Farmington Country Days held annually in June, the Wiggle and
Giggle Fishing Derby, Harvest Night, Winter Wonderland and other family activities keep life exciting.
Fifteen parks line the streets of the community, offering sites for fishing, playgrounds, ball and soccer fields,
tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, picnicking, barbecue and beautiful open space. One park in particular
is dedicated to skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX riders. The Farmington Skate Park, located at Long
Park, is a 25,000-square-foot course that is equipped with rails, ramps and obstacles.
Active residents have access to the modern Farmington Community Civic Center, which houses multi-use
courts for a variety of sports, a 1/8-mile track, a state-of-the-art fitness facility and aerobics room, a six-lane
pool, a leisure pool, a mini indoor water park and a number of activities and programs.
For some fun in the water, residents visit the Farmington Water Park, comprised of an interactive playground,
a play area for children, two giant slides, a Lazy River winding over 500 feet and 300 chaise lounge chairs for
those who are looking for a little relaxation under the rays. Additional sites for outdoor water amusement are
Clearwater Lake in nearby Piedmont, K Bridge, the Bone Hole, Old Bridge and The Offsets.
And golfers of all skill levels can appreciate Farmington’s two beautifully-manicured golf courses, which
include the 7,069-acre Crown Pointe Golf Club and the 6,568-acre St. Francois Country Club.
Southeast Missouri is packed with beautiful areas that attract outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country.
Millstream Gardens Conservation Area has the only whitewater area in the state, allowing kayakers to ride the
water in springtime. The area also has a one-mile hiking trail that meanders along the St. Francois River.
Visitors to the area enjoy Pickle Springs Natural Area, as well, home to a two-mile trail that winds past
alluring waterfalls, bluffs, canyons and rock shelters, as well as unique plant life.
In addition to these excellent leisure endeavors, there are a handful of winsome state parks that dot the map of
this southeast Missouri region, drawing in visitors year-round.
Elephant Rocks State Park Created 1.5 billion years ago from cooled hot magma that formed into what is
now giant, rounded boulders, Elephant Rocks State Park is a sight to be seen in nearby Belleview. In addition
to the unique topography of this area are 30 picnic sites.
Hawn State Park A group of trails, areas for picnicking and campgrounds comprise this nearly 5,000-acre
park in Ste. Genevieve. The Whispering Pine Wild Area, encompassing 2,880 acres within the park, offers the
option to backpack, bird watch or simply take in nature. Pickle Creek, which has been designated as a state
natural area, also winds through the park.
Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park Camping, hiking, swimming, picnicking and seasonal rock climbing are top
diversions at this scenic park in Middlebrook.
St. Francois State Park Situated in Bonne Terre, St. Francois State Park is equipped with three hiking trails,
the Coonville Creek Natural Area, the Big River – which is ideal for canoeing – shelters for picnicking and
more than 100 campsites for overnight guests.
St. Joe State Park Spanning 8,238 acres – making it the state’s third-largest state park – St. Joe State Park in
Park Hills features 2,000 acres solely for off-road vehicles (ORV), two campgrounds, a hike and bike trail, an
equestrian trail, sites for picnicking and lakes for swimming and fishing.
Taum Sauk Mountain State Park Located in the St. Francois Mountains, this park encompasses some of the
most rugged and picturesque areas in Missouri. The park, which is found in Ironton, stretches over 7,448 acres
of natural land and offers a great trail system, a picnic area and a campground.

Shopping in the area is diversified and abundant, with quaint boutiques and specialty shops, major department
chains and professional businesses all located within Farmington. Top spots for shopping include Maple
Valley Center, Highway 67, Karsch Boulevard, The Factory and downtown Farmington, which stretches
around East Liberty Street and West Columbia Street and encompasses many of the community’s original
buildings.
The businesses that line these corridors have aided in Farmington’s role as a regional shopping hub by
providing a variety of products and services that draw in people from all over St. Francois County and its
surrounding areas.
The Factory is a 75-year-old former garment industry property that has been totally renovated and developed
into a visitor destination in historic downtown Farmington. Located two blocks behind City Hall, it includes a
45,000-square-foot, climate-controlled indoor mall with over 60 specialty shops, artist and ballet studios, a
café, a walking track and a tourist information center.

Homeowners in Farmington are attracted to the area’s extensive housing options, which range from economic
apartment and condominium complexes to modest single-family digs and regal estates that sit along beautiful
tree-lined streets. More than half of the area’s housing was constructed within the last 30 years, which has
aided in the aesthetic appeal of Farmington neighborhoods. Also adding to the area’s attractiveness are
excellent schools, top medical care, cultural opportunities and an assortment of shopping, dining and
entertainment options – not to mention the region’s affordable living. The average housing price of the area
sits at just over $166,000, with two-bedroom homes hovering around $113,000 and four-bedroom homes
averaging just above $234,000. Rentals are also available for those residents not looking to buy.

Offering top-rate educational opportunities to students of Farmington is a leading component of life in the
city. Creating lifelong learners and successful professionals has always been a priority for local educators. The
Farmington R-7 School District serves the public school needs of residents through three elementary schools,
Lincoln Intermediate School, one middle school and one high school. Additional campuses include the
Truman Kindergarten Center, W.L. Johns Early Childhood Center, the Midwest Learning Center (alternative
schooling) and the Juvenile Detention Center.
Alternatives to public schooling can be accessed within Farmington, with such parochial institutions as St.
Joseph Catholic School (preK-8) and St. Paul Lutheran School (preK-8).
For those seeking post-secondary education, the main campus of Mineral Area College is a short, 8.5-mile
drive to Park Hills, with an outreach center at Farmington High School. MAC is a two-year community
college enrolling around 4,000 credit students and 1,500 non-credit students each semester. The institution
awards one- and two-year degrees, along with certificates. Bachelor’s and master's degrees may be achieved
on-site through MAC's partnership with Central Methodist University. The college holds transfer agreements
toward both bachelor’s and master’s degrees with Southeast Missouri State University, University of MissouriSt. Louis, Missouri Baptist University, University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri University of Science
& Technology.In addition, MAC works closely with the area’s businesses by providing such services as
customized training, community and workforce development and career services and placement, as well as
continuing education. The college offers a variety of training programs to local employers in both hard and
soft skills development and can customize training to the customer’s needs. What’s more, the college
facilitates and provides training for the Mineral Area Training Consortium (an industrial training consortium
for local manufacturers), and administers the Missouri Customized Training Program for the region.
MAC has developed long-term relationships with some of the major employers in the region by offering
flexible programs for general employee development and for those students wishing to pursue an A.S. or A.A.
S. degree. Programs can be offered either at the college or at the employer’s site, and can be tailored to meet
almost any need the employer or employees may have.
Higher education is also available at more than 15 sites within 60 miles.
Additionally, the Farmington Public Library offers a great source for learning, with more than 38,000 volumes
lining its walls. Books, magazines, videos, cassettes, computers with Internet access, a low-vision resource
center, a genealogy room, a number of programs and activities and more can all be found here throughout the
year.

Farmington has always enjoyed a stable economic environment, even in the face of the surrounding lead
mining industry’s failure in the early 1970s. The city’s location is ideal, with downtown St. Louis reachable in
just over a one-hour drive. Accessible transportation also plays a role in Farmington’s economic success with
nearby major highways and air travel facilities.
Local business, comprised of everything from independently owned shops to major retailers to progressive
manufacturers, continue to diversify, making Farmington an appealing site for relocation or expansion.
A regional hub with more than 30,000 in its labor force, Farmington brings together human resources from

With more than 109,000 workers in the Southeast Missouri Region and more than 30,000 in St. Francois
County, the labor market draw is a strong point of difference among other areas in the state of Missouri. In
fact, St. Francois County has a substantial number of skilled employees that exceeds the entire populations of

The labor market in the area is a product of the population and education levels available. Farmington’s
population has maintained a relatively steady and continuous growth since 1900, hitting approximately 16,000
in 2010. It is expected to exceed 20,000 by the year 2030.
It is important when looking at population to consider the size of surrounding areas easily traveled by
residents, consumers and employees. St. Francois County has a population of nearly 65,000, and the
surrounding counties within a 60-mile radius of St. Francois County constitute an additional population of
approximately 300,000 and growing.

communities with options for renting and purchasing.
When the local parks, wineries and shops aren’t quite enough, seniors can also take advantage of the
Farmington Oaks Senior Center. The facility provides an opportunity for seniors to make new friends or

Established in 1952, Mineral Area Regional Medical Center (MARMC) is hailed as an excellent source of
healthcare in the Farmington area. Currently equipped with 135 beds and a multitude of knowledgeable
physicians, MARMC provides an array of medical services, including cardiac care, cardiopulmonary/
respiratory, laboratory, labor/delivery/nursery, emergency services, GI/endoscopy, home health, imaging,
rehabilitation, women’s services, surgery and the Sleep Center. Community education is also a feature at
MARMC.
The hospital’s emergency room was recently expanded, affording a modern 12,500-square-foot facility
boasting a Level III Trauma Center designation. The ER is stocked with the latest technology and services,
including a dedicated radiology room and CT scanner. The Emergency Department wait times are some of the
lowest in the region and nearly half of the national average. MARMC continues to supply area residents with
high-caliber care. In 2006 alone, 21,313 patients visited the Emergency Room, 2,932 were admitted as
inpatients, 87,078 were admitted as outpatients, and nearly 4,000 surgical cases were performed.
In addition, the medical center has more than 120 primary care and specialty physicians on staff, providing a
wide range of medical and surgical specialties. MARMC has outreach facilities in Bonne Terre, Park Hills,
Pilot Knob and Farmington to meet the healthcare needs of the whole community.
Parkland Health Center-Farmington

Parkland Health Center was established with the 1991 merger between two former independent community
hospitals: Farmington Community Hospital and Bonne Terre Hospital. Parkland Health Center is part of BJC
HealthCare which also includes St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the teaching
hospitals for Washington University School of Medicine, Missouri Baptist Medical Center and other top area
hospitals.
Parkland Health Center in Farmington offers primary care, full inpatient and outpatient services and 24-hour
emergency services, as well as specialized care in obstetrics, pediatrics, laboratory and radiology,
cardiopulmonary care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and physical therapy. The Farmington location is a
130-bed, full-service medical facility located just off Highway 67. Parkland’s radiology department offers
diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, CT scan, PET scan, special procedures
and echocardiography. The OB department offers comfortable private and semi-private rooms, with plenty of
room for family visits. The Wound Care Center features one of the only hyperbaric chambers in the area, and
is a vital part of treating wounds that are difficult to heal.
Health and wellness education and support are an important part of Parkland’s mission. Seeds of Wisdom,
Parkland’s annual women’s health conference, offers health and wellness education, and is attended by more
than 300 women each year. Classes and conferences on women’s health, chronic disease management, active
living and peer-to-peer discussion groups, and other topics are held throughout the year. Parkland offers
support groups to help you live better, including a diabetic support group that meets each month, and regular
grief support groups.

Fostering wellness in the area since 1957, patients can find an array of medical services through Jefferson
Memorial Hospital in nearby Crystal City. The Cancer Center, Deles Heart and Vascular Center, Image
Center, Rehabilitation Center, Wound Care Center and a fully-staffed emergency room are coupled with
behavioral health, laboratory, maternity, medical imaging, occupational medicine, surgery and women’s
services.

The Surgery Center of Farmington, established in 1999, is an outpatient facility where more than 4,000
outpatient surgeries are performed each year. Licensed by the state of Missouri Department of Health and
certified by Medicare, the practice specializes in eye surgery, general surgery, gynecology, orthopedic

Owned by the State of Missouri and operated by the Department of Mental Health, the Southeast Missouri
Mental Health Center (SEMMHC) is comprised of a professional staff of psychiatrists, physicians,
psychologists, professional counselors, clinical social workers, therapeutic recreational specialists and
program supervisors – among other members. The facility is equipped with 54 beds for short-term care (an
average of five to seven days), 98 beds for long-term care and 20 beds for developmental disabilities/mental
illness services.
The beginnings of the Farmington Public Library have their roots in an “evening of music and reading”
organized by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1915. “Reading Rooms” were first located in the
Tetley Building, second in the Farmington High School and then moved back to the Tetley Building. The
library officially opened in May 1916 with a collection of 150 books, which grew to 1,600 books by 1917.
In April 1920, the library was moved for the fourth time to the Farmer’s Bank Building. Plans were being
made for the fifth move to a new building, Long Memorial Hall, which was built as a tribute to William
Dubart Long, a pioneer of Farmington. When the building was nearly complete, a fire delayed the formal
dedication, which took place October 31, 1924. Farmington Public Library was housed in Long Memorial
Hall from October 1924 until its move to 108 W. Harrison St. in August 1980. Services have gradually
expanded to include not only books but magazines, newspapers, large print books, audio books on cassette
and videos. Further expansion in services include participation in the interlibrary loan program, participation
in the state’s Summer Reading Program for children, children’s story hours, copying services and audio-visual
equipment for loan, microfilm readers in the genealogy department, computerized card catalog and circulation
system and equipment for the visually impaired. A delivery service for the homebound has been added to the
list of services provided by the library.
In 1977, a proposal for a new library was presented to the City Council. From a dedicated group of Friends of
the Library, members of the library board and a committed librarian, the final plan for a new facility took
shape. The city allocated an amount for actual construction and architects’ fees, and the planning and steering
committee began a fundraising campaign to furnish the building.
The present building housing the Farmington Public Library officially opened to the public in August 1980.
The Farmington Public Library is dedicated to the memory of Witten H. Ledbetter, devoted friend of the
library, skillful journalist and dedicated mayor of Farmington.
The Farmington Public Library has grown from “Reading Rooms” to its own building of 8,000 square feet,
from a book collection of 150 to a collection of more than 42,250 volumes, from a beginning membership of
200 to more than 10,000 today. With computer resources, a special genealogy area, kids areas and events for
all ages, the Farmington Public Library is definitely more than just a reading room!
Farmington is proud of its governing voice, which ensures a high quality of life for all residents. The
community’s City Council is comprised of a mayor, eight councilpersons in four wards and a city counselor.
Several departments lie within local government, all working toward the betterment of community life, now
and in the future.
The Farmington Police Department works in partnership with the people of Farmington to protect life and
property, while maintaining the highest level of courtesy, honor, ethics and integrity. Through their adoption
of the Community Policing Philosophy and willingness to stay on the forefront of technology, new
enforcement methods and emerging programs, the department is committed to establishing and maintaining a
partnership within our community.
Staffed with 26 full-time contracted police officers, one reserve officer, six communications officers, three
civilian personnel and one volunteer chaplain, the City of Farmington Police Department is dedicated to the
safety of local and surrounding residents. Furthermore, two School Resource Officers (SROs) work within the
Farmington R-7 School District, providing students with a number of educational programs, including the
esteemed D.A.R.E. program.Farmington Fire Department is committed to protecting the people, property and
environment within our community. Responsive to the needs of citizens by providing rapid, professional,
humanitarian service, the Farmington Fire Department accomplishes its mission through prevention,
education, fire suppression, medical service hazardous mitigation and other related emergency and nonemergency activities. The City of Farmington currently holds an ISO rating of a 4, and the Fire Department
responds to more than 1,800 calls annually.
The community has also implemented an emergency phone and text alert system for advance warning in the
case of weather or other related emergencies.
In addition, the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department plays a role in public safety, with the sheriff
heading up a staff of detectives, road officers, K-9 patrol, process servers and court bailiffs.
