Our Story, My Story
Far West Family Camp
July 9-14, 2016
Thank you for being part of Family Camp! We
look forward to all that this week has to offer in
building our relationship with God and with others in the midst of the community gathered
here. There will numerous opportunities to enjoy learning, fun, fellowship, food, worship, and
more. Throughout our experience, we will explore how God has worked through the history
of our faith and works in us today, shaping and
guiding us forward to share love, joy, hope, and
peace. We hope you leave here refreshed, renewed, and ready to share your story.
In Christ,
Alexa and Brendan Cary

Lachlan Mackay is an Apostle assigned to
the North East USA Mission Field and he
leads the Church History and Sacred Story Ministries Team. Born and raised in
Jackson County, Missouri, Lach attended
the University of Missouri in Columbia
where he focused on Russian Area Studies and Economics before discovering his
passion for church history. He met his wife, Christin, in Joseph Smith’s
Red Brick Store in Nauvoo, Illinois and has spent his entire adult life
living and working at church historic sites. He holds both US and Australian citizenship and his favorite non-history activity is snorkeling.
Barbara Walden learned her first lessons in church
history from a small Community of Christ congregation that gathered in a three-car garage in her
hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Captured by
the stories of Emma Smith and Oliver Cowdery in
her youth, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in history
from Graceland University and a Master of Arts in
museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program at the
State University of New York. Following graduate school, Barbara returned to her love of church heritage as the site director of the
Kirtland Temple from 2002-2009. Today,
she is the executive director of the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation. When she isn’t traveling the country leading church history classes and
raising support for the historic sites, you
will find her and her husband, Jody, enjoying a night out at the baseball parks,
preferably one involving the Detroit Tigers. Barbara is an Elder in Community
of Christ and resides in Hartford, Connecticut.
6
Janné Grover is an apostle. She is assigned to the
Central USA Mission Field and she leads the Disciple
and Priesthood Formation Ministries Team. Her previous employment includes disciple formation ministries specialist for Community of Christ, and director
of orchestras for Lee’s Summit North High School and
Bernard Campbell Middle School in Lee’s Summit,
Missouri. Janné attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in vocal and instrumental music K–12. She also received a Master’s of Music Education
degree in instrumental conducting from Florida State University, an
Education Specialist degree in secondary administration from Northwest Missouri State University, and a Master’s of Arts in Religion from
Graceland University.
Share Your Object, Share Your Story
The Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation is on an exciting journey to find the unique stories and objects within Community of Christ history. We need your help! We need your story!
We invite you to submit a photo and story of a historic object, place, document, etc. that you believe tells the unique story of Community of Christ.
Your submission could be a book, image, decorative piece, clothing, or photograph of a place or historic marker.
Search your attics and closets or library and storage rooms of your local
congregation for historic items that tell your story. It could be an old hymnal given to you by someone who played a significant role in your journey, a
wooden cross carved by a founding member of your congregation, an image
of a ship used by early missionaries, or a recent photograph of you at a place
that carries historical significance in the Community of Christ story. We
want to hear about how your unique congregation began - is there a historic
object that represents an early missionary that helped plant your congregation? A photograph that captures the story of your Mission Center or Reunion ground? Is there an item that represents your family's beginnings in
Community of Christ.
Have a object or story to share? Want to be able to ask questions about
church history or other topics in an open setting. Guest Ministry Chats will
take place on Monday-Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 in North Cedar Haven. Bring your objects, stories, and questions to share with our visiting
ministers.

Friends of Camp Farwesta:
Much has been happening at the campgrounds and we continue to move forward with improvements to some areas.
Playground Update: As you can see and hear with your kids who may have
already experienced it, the swing set is up and moving!! Phase 1 is complete! Thank you! We are so close to meeting our financial need to install
Phase 2, (play equipment that includes slides). The children that use these
grounds have given us positive feedback to the improvements that have already been done. More to come!
Dining Hall Bathrooms: Both the men and women's bathrooms are remodeled. Many thanks to the youth that helped with the demo, and to the crew
and volunteers who contributed to get the job completed. Volunteers painted, built and installed all components to make a much needed improvement
to the bathrooms. It would not have been possible without the support and
desire to make a difference. Thank you!
Cedar Haven: Be sure to check out Room 1 of Cedar Haven! Built in beds
with comfortable mattresses! They are so comfy you will want to sleep in
there too! The overall goal is to makeover the remaining rooms 2-6 and create a welcoming, warm and comfortable living quarters for the guests who
use the building.
Other: Improvements to the family cabins, dorms 1-4, and the nurses cabin,
as well as the addition of an instant hot water heater in Cedar Haven.
A special Thank You to those volunteers who came out during the year and
before/during the camping season to give of your time and energy to give
back to the campgrounds. Your time is not overlooked, we value and appreciate all of our volunteers.
Also Thank You to those who have given financially to support the mission of
these grounds. Camp Farwesta would not be moving forward in a positive
direction without the support of the members of this Mission Center. If you
would like to contribute to one of the projects above please contact your Congregation Financial Officer, Linda Novak at the Mission office, or Kent Brooner.
We are always looking for new groups and organizations, big or small to rent
the campground facilities. Please help us spread the word and contact the
Mission Center office to schedule, 816.232.3319.
