MIDDLETOWN AREA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
President’s Column
Dear Alumni,
The Middletown Area Alumni Association would like to recognize its newest members, The Class of 2009.
Homecoming 2009 will be here in just a few short weeks. We expect to have another exciting day. Please
mark your calendars for Saturday, October 10, 2009. We look forward to recognizing the Class of
1959 as our Honor Class this year.
We will have our traditional homecoming activities such as the parade, game, and
alumni dinner this year. We will also host the 2nd annual Raider Alumni tailgate.
The tailgate will take place right outside Memorial Field. Alumni Association
members will receive free admission to the tailgate. All guests will be $5. Please
e-mail Angela Rowe Stover at [email protected] to RSVP for this
event. Last year was a huge success – please join us for some RAIDER
SPIRIT again this year!
The Alumni Association is very proud to announce Earl and Bobby Bright
as Grand Marshal’s for Homecoming 2009. They are avid Middletown
Blue Raider fans, they can be found at every Friday night football game, and
they still keep score at every wrestling match. They are both very active in the
Middletown community as well. Thank you, Earl and Bobby, for all you do!
One of our goals for 2009 was to increase membership. Thank
you to those who have joined us for our meetings this year. It
is always great to see many new faces. We meet every third
Tuesday of the month at Reid Elementary in the library.
Please join us.
Along with our two $2,500 awards, we were also able to
sponsor three high school seniors in the Nurses Aide training
through HACC and Frey Village. Thank you for all donations
made to the award fund. These donations help our future
Alumni members.
Sincerely,
Angela Rowe Stover

Education and children’s choir director at
Wesley United Methodist Church where
she has been a lifelong member.
Bobby, daughter of Betty Welsh Bretz,
started her educational career in the
Middletown Area School District by
attending the Wood Street School and
then the Emmaus Street grammar
school. She then attended the George
W. Feaser Junior High as well as the old
Middletown High School on Water Street
and then finally attended and graduated
from the new Middletown High School
in 1965. While in school some of her
fondest memories included taking part
in gymnastics where she competed and
medaled at competitions at Penn State
University and Temple University. She
chose gymnastics over cheerleading since
Mrs. Goepfert told her she was not loud
enough to be a cheerleader. Her most
memorable teachers were Mrs. Goepfert,
Mrs. Giley, Mr. Sheeler, Mr. Sohn, and
Mrs. Rambler. She also remembers the
half days of school in high school when
the new high school was being built.
Bobby lived on Wilson Street until high
school graduation before finally settling
in on South Catherine Street for the past
40 years.
Earl is the son of Earl Bright Jr. and
Beatrice Bright. Earl started his schooling
at Grandview (Demey) Elementary
School. From there he attended Feaser
Junior High, the old Middletown High
School and finally graduated from the
new Middletown High School. While
in school Earl was the student trainer
for the football and baseball teams and
was on the wrestling team. Not only was
Earl on the very first wrestling team in
1961 – 1962, he was the first four-year
varsity letter winner in wrestling and
wrestled the very first interscholastic
match for Middletown Area High School
in 1961. Earl wrestled 95 pounds for two
years and 103 pounds for two years. He
also served as captain of the wrestling
team for two years. Some of his most
memorable teachers in school were Mr.
Duane Patterson, Mr. Pete Fox Sr., Mr.
Alexander, Mr. Shipe, Mr. Rowan, and
Mrs. Gears. Earl grew up in the Olmsted
Homes (now Penn State Harrisburg) and
Shope’s Gardens. While serving in the
Pennsylvania National Guard from 1966
– 1972 he was employed by Dauphin
Deposit Bank. He has also worked for
Merchant and Businessmen Mutual
Insurance followed by Tressler Lutheran
Services now known as Diakon Lutheran
Services where he works today serving
as the Financial Services Coordinator at
Frey Village.
Bobby worked at the Milk Bar, Ben
Franklin 5 & 10, as well as, Giant Food
Stores, Gingrich Memorials and is
currently the Director of Christian
Both Earl and Bobby have a very long
standing history of supporting various
groups in the Middletown Area School
District, as well as, the Borough of
he 2009 Homecoming Grand
Marshals are Earl W. Bright III and
Bobby Lee Bright. Earl and Bobby are
1965 graduates of Middletown Area
High School. Both Earl and Bobby
are lifelong Middletown residents and
avid supporters and contributors to the
Middletown Area School District as well
as the community of Middletown.
Middletown. Both Earl and Bobby have
been involved in Middletown wrestling
in some way, shape, or form since 1961.
They have served as scorekeepers,
timekeepers at both Middletown
matches, as well as, the PIAA Sectional
and District Tournaments for the
past eight years, and Earl has been
a scorekeeper at the PIAA State
Championship Tournament for eight
years. They were both involved with the
creation of the Pin and Win Club (the
wrestling booster club) and served as
officers in the Raider Club including
President and concession chairperson.
Earl was also a PIAA wrestling official
for 15 years.
Earl served six years on Middletown
Borough Council – several of those
years were during the Three Mile Island
incident in 1979. He is the treasurer of
the Middletown Historical Society and
Wesley United Methodist Church.
Bobby is a lifelong member of Wesley
United Methodist Church, a member of
the Piece Makers Quilt Guild, and the
Middletown Historical Society.
Earl and Bobby also volunteer with the
Middletown Red Cross when needed.
They are the proud parents of Lynn
Bright Brandt and Earl W. Bright IV.
They have five grandchildren: Alexa (12),
Zoey (9), Jacob (10), Josh (6) and Ella
(3). They celebrated their 42nd wedding
anniversary this past March. In their
spare time they enjoy the Civil War,
ghost hunting (especially at Gettysburg),
watching their grandchildren, quilting,
and watching any and all MASD
sporting events!

Middletown
Homecoming
2008 Recap
The 2008 Homecoming celebration began on Friday
with some classes holding reunions at various
restaurants throughout the Middletown area.
This year’s special events changed the normal schedule
of Saturday activities. The Homecoming parade was
held in the morning. Following the parade, alumni,
friends, and school faculty “tailgated” on the grounds
of the Fink School. This event was sponsored by
the Alumni Association, Middletown Area School
District, and Nutrition Inc. After tailgating, alumni
and fans gathered at the War Memorial Field where
various activities celebrated the 60th anniversary and
rededication of the newly renovated War Memorial
Field. Members of the 1948 Blue Raiders football team
were recognized and received gifts from the members
of the 2008 team. All alumni who participated in any
event held at the field were invited to gather on the
field with other members of their respective events and
be recognized. The football game followed with the
Middletown Blue Raiders playing Trinity High School.
The Blue Raiders lost by a score of 35-14. During
halftime activities, Kate Barbara was crowned as this
year’s Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by BreMahr Manning.

Honor Class of 1959
th
50
Anniversary
By Walter Williams, Emelia Grosso Wasilewski,
Barbara Stewart Manley, and Margaret Fochler Meyer
W
e began our high school years at Feaser School in
1954, due to lack of space at the original High School
on Water Street. We were fortunate to have Mr.
Patterson and Mr. Sinner as class advisors. We began
trying to earn money by selling fruitcakes and magazines.
We elected as our class officers, Heinz Dickl, President;
Ronald McGraw, Vice President; Joan Spancake, Secretary;
and Donald Bryan, Treasurer.
Our freshman year passed quickly and at last we were
finally at good old M.H.S.! We were perhaps a little
nervous, but anxious to be sophomores! Much to our
surprise, we only had three minutes between classes! We
couldn’t possibly make it on time! We chose our class
motto, “After the Battle, the Reward”; class colors, blue and
ivory; and the class flower, white rose. Our new location
meant new class advisors who were Mr. Farner and Mr.
Guistwhite. We elected William Fulginiti as President;
Donald Bryan, Vice President; Nancy Weaver, Secretary;
Connie Cain, Treasurer; and Joan Spancake, Historian.
Many of us took part-time jobs at Newberry’s, Grant’s,
Silco’s and Stuckey’s. It was great to shop and hang out
where our friends worked. There was always the Elks
Theatre for great movies!
For our junior year, Mr. Heller replaced Mr. Guistwhite
as an advisor and we elected the following class officers:
William Fulginiti, President; Edward Baum, Vice
President; Nancy Weaver, Secretary; Emelia Grosso,
Treasurer; and Judy Powell, Historian.
We raised more money selling magazines and candy at
the football games. We used some money to sponsor
the Junior-Senior Prom with the theme being “Some
Enchanted Evening” which was suggested by Kathy
Seltzer. Our prom was held of course in the old gym
which is now the Main Street Gym. We were dancing
and listening to the music of Elvis Presley! We look
back fondly at Red’s, Charlie Beard’s, Renn’s Milk Bar,
and Ted’s, where we practiced all the latest dances from
American Bandstand.
At last we were seniors!! We elected George Crain,
President; Monroe Hinkle, Vice President; Emelia
Grosso, Secretary; Priscilla Taylor, Treasurer; and Walter
Williams, Historian.
Since there was no cafeteria at the high school, we started
a hot lunch counter, which also raised money for our
class. Our One Act Play, “T for Two” was written by
Monroe Hinkle. The senior play presentation was “The
Man on the Stairs.” We also enjoyed the Junior-Senior
Prom with the theme, “Japanese Fantasy.”
We were part of the “Fifties.” We were lucky to have
experienced the fun of that Era. We were fortunate to
have had many teachers and coaches who really cared
about us. When we meet friends from those days, there
is an unspoken feeling that no matter who we now are,
or where we have been, we know at one time we shared a
special time in our lives.
There’s Nothing Greater than a Raider!
