The
Going for the ride of my life
From PAGE OBENSHAIN
2013 President
‘WOW!’
Came out of my mouth with no one listening. I was sitting for the very first time
in the right seat (after locating the door
handle) of a Carrera GT just gazing at
everything, how it was made, how the
carbon fiber looked so cool, and then my
driver walked up to take me for a ride.
He got in the car, fastened his seat
belt, cranked the car up and we took
off. What a comfortable seat, and belted
tightly in, you really feel you are a part of
the car. My driver gave me about a 15mile ride that was over much too quickly.
The Carrera GT performed impressively with great acceleration, great braking; it felt like it was on rails in the curves
and corners. I know I had a great big grin
on my face when exiting the car and saying my thank you. The driver took off
and the sound was simply awesome.
What a ride! What an experience I will
never forget! What a car! I must admit
I did a search to see if the car was afINSIDE THIS ISSUE OF

fordable (not for me). I found used cars
available up to $457,000. The car was a
limited production and the new 918 will
replace it at double the cost. “Coming
soon to the dealer near you” … only if
you order one.
I have ridden in an IRL 2-seater car at
the Honda Grand Prix of
St. Petersburg and I must
say the Carrera GT was
more impressive because
I can fantasize about
driving the car myself.
Well, I almost forgot
to let you know my ride
in the Carrera GT was
on the Sebring track.
We drove at speed, I
couldn’t see the speedo
but I am sure we were
well beyond 160 MPH
on the back straight.
We blew by a GT3 (a pass w/a signal)
and the speed difference was incredible.
My driver was Andy deGanahl, a Suncoast member since 1982, and one of
the very best track instructors on our
team. The car is a 2005 with 7,000 miles
on her clock. Andy’s car has seen the
track only a few times, driven from his
home in Amelia Island. THANK YOU,
ANDY!

growing where most print publications
in the U.S. are shrinking. We will soon
have a new and greatly improved email

times; they have hired a Membership/

We were complimented in front of
the National Staff, the Executive Council, the 13 Zone Representatives and all
present for our work with the 48 Hours
event. The fact is that we host the largest club race in the world. Watkins Glenn
is second. Our Suncoast Florida Region
was also complimented on our Drivers
Education program as being one of the
best, if not the best in our zone.

seems to me that the holidays were only last week and
here we are moving rapidly
into the second quarter of 2013. There
have been so many fun and wonderful
Suncoast events and activities that time
has flown by.
Rookie Weekend
You’ve been hearing that Rookie
Month in coming up in April. It is finally
here! Now it’s time for you to join in all
of the activities this month – it will be a
month to remember!
Following tradition, Rookie weekend will be held on April 13 and 14. Although the main focus is on new members or new-to-the-activity members, all
Suncoast Region members are encouraged to attend. We need you to share
your experience and expertise!
Saturday, April 12, starts with a rally
and scavenger hunt and ends with a car
show and cook out hosted by Pete and
Cindy Morell. Sunday, April 14, we have
the autocross scheduled at the St. Petersburg College, Allstate Center, 3200
34th St. S., St. Petersburg.
Date Your Porsche Night
We’re heading south for Date Your
Porsche Night in April. Join us in Bradenton at the Tarpon Pointe Grill &
Tiki Bar on April 16 at 7 p.m.
This is another great opportunity to
meet fellow PCA members, and enjoy
dining with fantastic views of the Manatee River.
Who knows what we’ll see, as we’ve
heard rumors of the Algorythm, a 92’
yacht, lurking about. The address is Tarpon Pointe Marina, Manatee River
801
Riverside Drive East, Bradenton FL
34208. Email your RSVP to Eunice at
[email protected] no later than
Friday, April 12, to be included.
Driver’s Education, Sebring
Rumor has been confirmed that on
April 20 and 21 several past club presidents, and the current club president are
planning a cookout on Saturday night at
the track paddock.
Please join us in the paddock, in honor of our rookie drivers. Please sign up
for the cookout when you register for
Drivers Education at clubregistration.
net.
Check the calendar for additional activities in April as the calendar has something for everyone. Start planning now
for the upcoming Parade in the summer,
the Boxster Summit, and the many and
varied activities that are offered. Until
then, see you In The Corners.

The Membership Starting Line
By Jeremy Dixon,
2013 Membership Chairman
at Baylor University and caught up with
who was doing what these days, but we
also talked quite a bit about Porsche
ownership, our experiences at the
Porsche Parade, DE and the 48 Hours
of Sebring.
We have an excellent combination
of events coming up before the summer heat hits. Something for everybody
including driving, social and car shows.
Check out the schedule either in Porsche
Profile or online and participate! Hope
to see you at an event!
Porsche ownership is universal. It’s
the common denominator that helps
join us in our daily life. I recently went
to Dallas, Texas, on business and after
my conference stayed with a friend of
mine and saw his beautiful 1991 C2
Cabriolet and met another friend of
mine for adult beverages and saw his
2003 C4S for the first time.
Sure, we reminisced about old times

This month’s cover was taken at Phillippi Estate Park in Sarasota by Peter Tromboni, Internet Parts Associate at Suncoast Motorsports.
Owned by an Illinois resident, this beauty is a
2013 Porsche 991 Carrera S that Suncoast Motorsports fitted with a factory Sport Design

PORSCHE PROFILE • APRIL 2013
New Suncoast PCA
members Linda and
Ron Swiger, and their
’89 Carrera at right.
Getting to know your PCA Suncoast Region, one member at a time
10 Questions for Ron Swiger, Suncoast PCA member for 6 months
PORSCHE PROFILE: What’s your occupation and in which part of the Suncoast
Region do you live?
RON SWIGER: I am retired from Lockheed Martin Aerospace Orlando where I
was the Director of Missile Quality Assurance. My wife Linda and I live in North
Tampa.
PP: How did you first become a Porsche/
Suncoast enthusiast?
RS: I bought my first Porsche in May 2012
and shortly after joined PCA. I saw that
the Tampa Bay area had a local group of
Porsche owners and signed up for Suncoast.
PP: What models of Porsches have you
owned and what do you currently drive?
RS: I never really thought about owning a
Porsche and was looking for a vintage BMW
when my sons suggested that I might like
a Porsche. That started the hunt which
ended up with Linda and me flying to Buffalo, N.Y., to pick up our 1989 Porsche 911
Carrera. We drove the 1500 miles home in
2 ½ days and I was hooked on this rear engine, air cooled sports car. The drive back to
Tampa included some great mountain roads
to experience the fun of owning and driving
a Porsche.
PP: What is your “dream” car?
RS: That is a tough question. I appreciate
fine automobiles as art and enjoy seeing the
beautiful motorcars at such venues as the
Amelia Island Concours, but would never
want a “trailer queen” or a car so expensive
that I would never drive it. Since getting
involved with the Porsche, I have become
intrigued with the Magnus Walker Porsches.
I love how he turns old beaters into such interesting and drivable cars.
PP: In which PCA/Suncoast activities or
events do you participate?
RS: In the short time we have been members, we have attended the Porsches in the
Park, Date Your Porsche Night and worked
Timing and Scoring and the Grid at the 48
Hours event. We have enjoyed each event
very much and were impressed with the
friendliness of all the Porsche owners we
have met. Suncoast PCA members are a real
inclusive group and invite the “newbies” to
join in the fun. We have already met a number of members and look forward to participating in future activities.
PP: Is there a Suncoast event in which you
excel – or would like to excel?
RS: I would like to do some DEs and improve my car handling skills.
PP: What interests you, other than Porsche?
RS: Cars have been my number one hobby
for most of my life but I also am a somewhat serious bicycle rider. My current road
bike is much like the super cars of today, as
it is a high performance, 20 speed, carbon
fiber machine. Unfortunately, the motor is
PORSCHE PROFILE • APRIL 2013
pretty worn out. I have loved British sports
cars for most of my life and currently own
a frame off restored 1961 Austin Healey. I
am a two term past president of the Tampa
Bay Austin Healey Club. My daily driver is a
2008 BMW M3.
I also have to mention my wonderful fiveyear-old twin grandsons who are already a
little “car crazy.” They are a joy for Linda
and me..
PP: Do you prefer the direct way home or
the twists and turns route?
RS: When time permits, Linda and I always
like to take the back roads. However, being
an engineer, I always want to know the details of where I am going and how I will get
there, which drives my wife crazy.
PP: In your opinion, how could Porsche improve the driving experience?
RS: They seem to be doing a good job on
the driving experience. My vintage 1989
Carrera is a blast to drive. I can just imagine
what a 2013 is like..
PP: Do you have a Porsche story you’d like
to share with our readers?
RS: My youngest son (who is also a new
Suncoast member) owns a 1973 Porsche
911 Targa boxster. You ask what is a 1973
Targa boxster?! It is a stripped down, totally
disassembled car that is in 100 boxes or so.
He really believes he can put it back together. Time will tell.

FUN RALLY/SCAVANGER HUNT
Update on Suncoast’s Rookie Weekend
While the focus will be on newer
members, all Suncoast Region members are encouraged to come out and
show rookies how it’s done at Rookie Weekend April 13 and 14, part of
Rookie Month festivities.
Saturday morning starts out with
a rally to Cheval, in Lutz (see sidebar,
this page). Please note one change:
the rally will finish at the Cheval Athletic Club, with a car show and cookout hosted by Pete and Cindy Morell.
Please bring your favorite dish to share,
which can be left with attendants at the
rally start to keep it cool, if needed.
On Sunday, the region will host an
autocross at St. Petersburg College,
Allstate Center, 3200 34th St. S., St.
Petersburg, sponsored by Bert Smith
Porsche. Instructors will be available.
This is a low speed event, ideal to
test your skills against championship
autocrossers, many of whom have
won national titles in both Sports Car
Club of America and Porsche Club
autocrosses.
Members can enter just the Saturday event or just the Sunday event, but
we hope you will come out for both.
Register for both events at Clubregistration.net. For more information,
contact Sharron Shields at [email protected] or call 407-342-7439
(cell) or 813-681-5378 (home).
Update on Rally School/Rally
By JIM HOEY
The TSD Rally & Rally School on
April 27th is waiting for you, your
navigator, and your Porsche. There is
one change: the restaurant hosting
the rally school has changed hands,
and the name, which was Kojak’s, will
now be Kostas. We’re hoping the signage is changed before our event! But
be aware of this just in case.
We’ll keep all who sign up informed
as things take place. Sign up by sending an email to: jim@jimandjeanne.
com, or call 941-323-5184. The entry
fee per vehicle is $10. There will still
be a breakfast buffet available for purchase during the school.
Those who had signed up for this
rally last year (which was cancelled)
will need to register again. Suncoast
Porsche is providing us with lunch,
and we need a total head count no later
than April 22nd.

Autocross Recap:
48 Hours, Rookie Month
By BRIAN WEST
Competition Chair
W
ith the roaring engines of the PCA
club racers as a backdrop, the Gold Coast
region hosted an exciting autocross on
February 2 at the Sebring International
Raceway skid pad. Clutches warmed
quickly during the starting sprint across
the lot, which was followed by a set of
tight turns, then another very fast, long
slalom diagonally across the length of
the course, into slippery skid pad.
Overaggressive entries into the skid
pad were rewarded with tail-out oversteer, and those who kept it in check
around the larger radius had their patience tested with an inner trip around
the slick pad.
Trips around different portions of
the low friction surface were a fun treat
for the drivers (tire squeal anyone?)!
After exiting the skid pad, competitors
squeezed throttle to floor on a final
dash to a double lane change maneuver
and across the finish line.
Fastest time of the day went to
event co-organizer Gold Coast’s Steve
Kidd in his 996 GT3 on Hoosier A6
tires, who, with the help of his wife
Dottie, put on a well-run event. Over
100hp but only one second behind him
was Suncoast’s autocross idol Danny
Shields in his blue Boxster S. Suncoast
Region was well represented overall,
with great participation and victories in
half of the classes.
Coming Up
Our next event will be held on April
14 at the St. Petersburg College, and
will round out our 2013 Rookie Weekend. We will be encouraging participation by those new to autocross, and we
welcome drivers and observers. We will
have plenty of instructors on hand and
encourage ride-alongs and autocross
instruction for those new to the sport,
as well as for drivers who want help
getting to the next level.
We will also award special prizes to
rookies, so if you have always wanted
to know more about autocross we welcome you to come out and spend a fun
Sunday with us!
Location Change
The last part of our 2013 autocross
schedule is changing due to recently
announced construction at the Zephyrhills Airport that will last into 2014.
The Zephyrhills airport has been the
unofficial autocross home of our region for over ten years, and we hope
to make it back when construction is
finished.
In the meantime, we have been
invited to join the Florida Suncoast
BMW CCA chapter at their event Nov.
17, 2013, at the Hernando County
(Brooksville) Airport. We are also
working to secure October and December dates and locations, so stay
tuned to Porsche Profile and suncoastpca.org for the latest schedule.
2013 Autocross Schedule

“Oooooh, on I burn,
Fuel these pumping engines,
Burning hard, loose and clean.
And on I burn, turning my direction,
Quench my thirst with gasoline.
Gimmee fuel, gimmee fire,
gimmee that which I desire,
Can’t fight the need for speed!”
T
hese lyrics from Metallica’s “Fuel” often ring in
my head while I sit on the
grid, helmet on, buckled
in, waiting my turn to enter Sebring International Raceway. For me, it’s a thrill
that never gets old. Whether I’m challenging myself as a driver to refine each
lap or dedicating myself as an instructor
to my student, I “can’t fight the need for
speed!”
Rick Meyer, DE Registrar, and all our
dedicated instructors continually strive
to make Suncoast Region’s DE program
the best it can be. Evidence of this work
is in the “Sold Out” registration of the

recent February 23-24 Suncoast/Goldcoast combined event. For those of you
who participated, how did you like the
new schedule?
Solo drivers with more than five Suncoast DE track days experience at Sebring, along with our instructors, can
now enjoy up to three and a half hours
track time each day!
This includes two hours with limited
passing zones and one and a half hours
with expanded passing.
In an effort to encourage early registration and eliminate the hectic (sometimes contentious) “pit stall grab” upon
arrival at the track, the pit stalls must
now be reserved at the time of your
registration. Each registrant may reserve
one stall for a $5 fee.
Clubregistration.net will assign each
pit stall number automatically in the order of registration. Most of the available
60 stalls will accommodate two cars. I
plan to reserve a stall, and then auction
the remaining area next to my car to the
highest bidding procrastinator.
Track rental, corner workers, insurance, and safety crews have continued
to charge our club more and more money over the years. This is forcing us to

Both April 20-21 and the May 11 Sebring DE events are open to all clubs

aturday afternoon driving during snowbird season has not
made it on my top ten funthings-to-do list. If I had the
desire to extend the list beyond ten, I dare
say it may not make it on my top 100. This
particular Saturday afternoon was different as I was headed to Sebring to drive on
the track.
The journey preceding this sunny Saturday afternoon has some history. We
need to flashback a few years in my story
to understand why I am a Porsche owner.
After needing a four-door car for many
years, I was back on the market for a twoseater convertible. I looked at several options but none really seemed to make me
want to buy.
I spent a considerable amount of time
checking out different makes and models
but then out of the blue I remembered my
friend Bob. Years ago, he had introduced
me to Chris Nelson, a Porsche owner and
PCA member, who drove his car on the
Sebring track. That was it! Selecting a car
that could also be used for fun activities
was appealing to me. Within a week I had
purchased a new BoxsterS.
Life happened and it took me around
20 months to actually get on the track.
Although I had been a member since the
purchase, it was my first event with Suncoast PCA. I didn’t know anyone nor did
I know anything about the event. I memorized the flags, studied the anatomy of an
apex and read anything I could find about
driving on the track. I went with my head
full of book knowledge about what to ex-
DE Registrar Rick Meyer takes a break in the paddock. And Suncoast VP Jill Perry gives it a go again.
pect. But after it was all said and done,
it was not an enjoyable experience and I
didn’t want to go back.
I became an active member and over
the last few years there have been several
Suncoast PCA friends who participate in
DE who have talked and talked and talked
and talked to me about getting back on the
track and trying it again. They were telling
me that it would be an enjoyable experience and I would love it. I usually replied
“I will consider it.” Changing my mind
about anything is a deliberate process.
I arrived in Sebring this particular Saturday in time to meet up with some Suncoasters for drinks and dinner and met my
instructor for the first time. He came highly recommended, and as I listened to my
first “chalk talk,” I knew why he is known
as the “woman whisperer.”
While the group was out that night, we
ran into a dozen or more other Suncoasters who had been on the track that day.
Stories of the day were bantered about,
videos replayed and many looked tired.
All of them had one thing in common –
a smile and happiness that comes when
someone has done something they love
to do.
Yes, after several years I went back on
the track in February. I have an enormous
amount to learn and I continue to process
the data that the track and car threw at me
during the sessions. During the sessions,
my instructor patiently and enthusiastically talked me through the track and provided amazingly intuitive guidance. In between sessions he provided feedback and
answered my questions.
By wearing a helmet, I lost much of
the sensation of when to shift gears and
PORSCHE PROFILE • APRIL 2013
needed to translate my performance motorcycling experience to the track. I wanted to understand what my car was saying
to me so I could find a way to push myself
and the car. After explaining to me that it
was an advanced concept (and probably
subconsciously rolling his eyes to heaven),
he took a water bottle and demonstrated
cornering, weight distribution and control
when braking, at rest, and during acceleration.
During the next session, he talked me
through these concepts, and when I hit
the apex I started to recognize what my
car was saying to me. When I missed the
apex, or braked too soon or too late, or
accelerated too soon or too late, or all of
the above in the same corner, she complained and I could feel her fighting back.
I knew for sure she was talking to me; I
just needed to learn how to listen.
Later that afternoon while she and I
were sitting in the hot pit alone, vivid images of the corners were fresh in my mind
as were the sensations of actually getting
an apex right. What a feeling. I started gazing at her from a new perspective. Imaginations are a wonderful thing, you know.
She seemed to be all snuggled in, kind of
glowing, and saying to me “What took you
so long?”
So – yes, is the answer. Yes, I can
change my mind. Yes, I can learn how to
see things differently. Yes, I can learn how
to understand what my car is saying to me.
And yes, of course, you got it right. We’re
going back again.
