Funding support has been provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health Contriburors: Deb Crozier & Larry Didier OR CALL the Contributor: Deb Crozier Health Corner Health Corner According the federal government Diabetes affects over 25 million people in the United States. The long term complications of diabetes when not treated effectively can be severe and include the increased possibility of: kidney disease, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and circulatory issues that often can lead to amputation. Recognizing that this condition can be difficult to manage and in an effort to provide resources to our workforce, Winnebago County has begun a Physician-directed pilot program designed to assist health plan members with diabetes to manage their condition. The program is purely voluntary, completely confidential, costs you nothing, and does not require you to change your doctor. The program will provide one on one Nurse or Physician interaction that will assist diabetics in better understanding how to manage this condition and comply with their doctor’s plan of care. The County hopes that by providing this resource will help our employees with diabetes increase their quality of life. If you are on the Winnebago County group insurance and interested in participating in this program, or have questions, please call Rhonda Bond at Williams Manny (815/229-8950). Contributor: Deb Crozier Let’s Make a “CHANGE” Winnebago County will be doing a collection for spare change to benefit the 84 United Way funded programs at 48 local agencies. WINNEBAGO COUNTY CASA SPRING TRAINING CLASSES BEGIN Winnebago County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) offers training twice a year, and, just recently, spring training began. Training is approximately 35 hours and usually occurs two to three days per week, with each session lasting 3 hours. The training program covers ten classes including an Orientation, and a minimum of two hours of courtroom observation. Volunteers are taught about: the court process from local judges and attorneys; the Department of Children and Family Services and other social service providers; and topics including physical and sexual abuse and domestic violence are addressed. Training also covers issues of cultural awareness, child development, report writing and effective advocacy techniques. The next training classes will begin in October, 2012. Once training & courtroom observation has been completed, a swearing in ceremony is held to welcome in the new class of CASA volunteers. CASA volunteers are now ready to take a case (each case represents a child). In general, what does the CASA volunteer do? A trained CASA volunteer gathers information for the court. He or she then recommends to the judge what the child needs to be safe and what is in the child’s best interests. The Judge reads the CASA reports as well as the agency reports, taking all reports into consideration when making a decision concerning the child. A CASA’s goal is to find a safe, permanent home for every child he/she represents. To become a CASA you must be at least 21 & be a high school graduate or have a GED. A commitment of two years is asked in order to remain with the child during the entire time the child’s case is in court. If you’re interested in becoming a CASA, would like to sign up for the fall training, or would like more information about our CASA Program, please contact our office at 815 -319-6880. Lodge 50 It’s that time of year again to dust off the clubs and get back on the greens. It’s also time for the annual F.O.P. Golf Play Day. The Fraternal Order of Police Union, Lodge 50, will be hosting the annual golf play day on June 29th, 2012 at Westlake Village Golf Course. The Fraternal Order of Police Union, Lodge 50, is an organization of sworn law enforcement officers of Winnebago County. Each year a portion of the proceeds from the golf play day is donated toward local charities. This past year the F.O.P. Lodge 50 made contributions toward the Harlem Township Toy Drive, Toys for Tots, the Special Olympics, the Roy Gayle Baseball Park, and local youth teams. We hope to continue to support our local organizations and youth groups. The F.O.P. members, friends and families would like to thank you for your past support and donations for this annual event. This year we anticipate achieving another successful golf play day. We are currently looking for sponsors for the F.O.P. Golf Play Day. The F.O.P. These areas are often free of cars waiting for other cars to pull out, pedestrian traffic, and the slow shoppers that are looking for the next closest parking spot. The threat of icy roads during the Spring and Summer is remote, so take those salt and sand bags out of your car. It amazes me to see people with these items still in their vehicles in the middle of Summer! Lighten your load to save gas. When at the gas station and you want a nice cold pop, skip the soda fountain and bottled pop, go for pop sold in aluminum cans. Twelve ounces more than likely will satisfy your cravings, help you avoid those extra calories, and allow you to put some extra spending money in your pocket by recycling the cans you collect. Submitted by Liz Asprooth Memorial Day Party Planning Tips Although Memorial Day has simply come to symbolize the start of summer for many people, its true purpose is to honor the men and women who lost their lives while serving our country. Here are a few ways you can observe the real meaning of Memorial Day with your family: Take time to explain the meaning of Memorial Day to children or grandchildren. Proudly fly the American flag. Take your family to a Memorial Day parade in your community. Place a donation in an American Legion kettle and get a red poppy for your lapel. Make a point of attending a ceremony at the local war memorial. Stop by a local cemetery and place flags on the graves of fallen soldiers. When dining outdoors on Memorial Day or July 4th, show your patriotic colors with a red, white and blue table trim. First, cover your picnic or patio table with a white tablecloth, allowing it to hang over the sides of the table. You can use cloth if you choose, but disposable paper tablecloths are less expensive and require no laundering afterward. They can be found at variety and party supply stores. Next, gather red and blue ribbon in assorted widths. Cut lengths of ribbon equal to the length of the tablecloth. Center the widest ribbon down the length of the table. Place a bit of double-stick tape on the underside of the ribbon at each edge of the table. Add additional ribbons on each side of the wide ribbon, and tape as before. Trim the ribbons even with the tablecloth. Now cut lengths of ribbon equal to the width of the table. Place them across the width of the table between each place setting, weaving them through the lengthwise ribbons, and tape as before. Trim ribbons even with the tablecloth. Place red and white geraniums in a patriotic container on the center of the table. Wrap tableware in a festive napkin; tie in a bow with a contrasting ribbon. Submitted by Liz Asprooth Summer activities take us and our food outdoors, so it is important to follow some simple food safety guidelines to prevent harmful bacteria from rapidly multiplying in the warm weather and causing foodborne illness. Summer Food Safety From the store to home Come & get it! When shopping, get your refrigerated and frozen items last, right before checkout. Separate raw meat and poultry from other food in your shopping cart. In hot weather (85°F and above), food should not sit out for more than one hour. Serving dishes should contain smaller portions. If necessary, replenish portions using clean dishes. Use plastic bags for raw meat & poultry. Plan to drive directly home from the grocery store. Serve food quickly from the cooler and put it back in the cooler as soon as possible. Refrigerate perishable food within two hours (one hour in hot weather). Consider taking a cooler with ice or gel packs if you have a long drive. Once home, place meat and poultry in the refrigerator immediately. Freeze meat and poul- Taking it home Put perishable foods back in the cooler immediately after eating. Perishable foods left out over two hours (or over one hour in hot weather) may not be safe and should be discarded. If perishables were kept on ice (except during cooking & serving), and the event was no longer than four or five hours, you should be able to save the leftovers if there is still enough ice (or if your gel packs or other cooling devices are still cold). I'm an independent, energetic girl. The staff and volunteers continue to work with me, and I'm finding that when I'm calm and sit I'm told I'm a "good girl" and I get rubbed. I'll need continued training, but who among us is perfect? I am a sassy 4 yr old black female cat. Because I'm so curious and playful, I can't sit still long enough to be held and cuddled. I'm still very affectionate though, and I very much want to be part of a forever family. I just have lots of play and exploring to do too! I also have lots to say, so stop in and we'll have a chat! The staff and volunteers think I'm a pretty smart dog, but I'm a bit shy/reserved (don't judge me by simply looking in my cage - since I'm shy, I tend to bark when a strange face is looking at me so they'll give me some space). The staff plays games with me, like putting a treat on the floor and making me sit and wait before I can go over and get it They tell me I act like I'm part hound, since I use my nose so much. There have been several requests from individuals inquiring how to send a text to someone’s phone via your email account. 1) You must know the cell phone number and the cell phone provider of the individual that you want to send a text to (i.e. Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc) 2) In the To: field enter the phone number (10 digit) and the email domain as set by the provider. For example, if the persons phone number is 815-555-5555 and they use Verizon, the email address would be [email protected]. 3) Be advised text messages are limited to 160 characters or less. Anything more will roll over into a second text message. 4) A complete list of domains for the different cell phone providers can be found at the link below. http://www.emailtextmessages.com/ Always Practice Safe Computing!
