Work-Related Injury Information
Recently, you may have noticed a posting on work-related injuries on bulletin boards in
various locations around Winnebago County. These postings are required by OSHA.
OSHA stands for Occupational Safety & Health Administration. OSHA began in 1970 and their mission is “to assure safe and
healthful working conditions for working men and women; by authorizing enforcement of the standards developed under the Act; by
assisting and encouraging the States in their efforts to assure safe and healthful working conditions; by providing for research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health; and for other purposes.”
The report contains information on the number of work-related injuries and illnesses, along with details on the number of work days
employees missed due to the injuries or illnesses, and the number of days employees worked on restricted duty. In some areas,
the County-wide report may be posted. In other areas, a report specific to the department may be posted.
Winnebago County’s mission is to “provide high quality services and promote a safe community for all people in the County.”
This includes the employees who work for Winnebago County. Under direction from the County Board, the Human Resources Department is taking more pro-active approach to work-related injuries. Some of the upcoming changes include; more detailed accident investigations, increased training or retraining, improved case management, etc.
Watch for more information in the future relating to safety.

Earth Hour is organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). With almost 5 million supporters and a global
network in over 100 countries/territories, it’s one of the world's largest and most respected independent
conservation organizations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth's natural environment
and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.
EARTH HOUR HISTORY
In 2006, WWF-Australia inspired Sydney-siders to show their support for climate change action in the first
ever Earth Hour event. It showed that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to
change the world they live in.
Then in March 2007 in Sydney, Australia, 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned
their lights out for one hour to take a stand against climate change.
In 2008, the plan was to take Earth Hour to the rest of Australia. But then the City of Toronto, Canada,
signed up and it wasn’t long before 35 countries and almost 400 cities and towns were part of the event. It
said something compelling to the world: that the climate challenges facing our planet are so significant that
change needs to be global.
With the invitation to ‘switch off’ extended to everyone, Earth Hour quickly became an annual global event.
It’s scheduled on the last Saturday of every March – closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most
cities are in darkness as it rolled out around the Earth.
In 2011, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries switch off for an hour. But it
also marked the start of something new – going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate
change. And with the power of social networks behind the Earth Hour message, we hope to attract even
more participation so we can build a truly global community committed to creating a more sustainable
planet.
Celebrate Earth Hour by turning
off your lights on Saturday,

Keep Your Computer On at Night
Turning your Winnebago County computer off when you leave at night can keep your
computer from
performing optimally. We encourage everyone to keep their
computer on at all times.
1.) Updates are conducted after hours, and the PCs need to be on to receive
them. A computer lacking updates can run slower and be more susceptible to
viruses.
2.) WinCo Antivirus software (AVG), is scheduled to scan PCs for viruses after
hours. When the computer is turned off, your computer cannot conduct full scans
which puts your machine at greater risk of catching a virus.
How can I save energy and secure my information if my computer is left on?
Even with your computer on there are several steps you can follow to save energy
and also protect your information.
1.) Always logoff your computer before you leave for the day. Not only does
logging off protect your information, it also allows DoIT to conduct our updates and
virus scans without affecting anything you may still have open.
2.) Turn your monitor off by pushing the power button. Even with your
computer on, you can still save energy by shutting the monitor off.
Accessing Your Voicemail from Outside the Office
The below instructions describe how to access your office voicemail while out of the
office.
