Call Human Resources at 319-4285 with questions. \ Contributor: Deb Crozier February 2013 5 Winnebago County Public Safety Summit The Winnebago County Public Safety Summit was held on January 16th, 2013 at the Chicago-Rockford International Airport. Police from around Winnebago County gathered with a panel of criminal justice professionals to explore means to enhance their crime-fighting tactics. This first crime summit brought together more than 90 local law enforcement, criminal justice and elected leaders focusing on cooperative police practices. Winnebago County Chairman Scott Christiansen closed the forum with a list of 10 potential steps for law enforcement to take. This was the first in a series of crime summits to be held. Distinguished speakers included Ryan Glew, Thomas Fleming, Larry Sachs, Chairman Christiansen, Jack Cutrone, David Bradford, and Steve Peterson February 2013 6 Contributor: Tom Jakeway February 2013 7 Winnebago County CASA Program 403 Elm Street Rockford, IL 61101 Telephone: 815-319-6880 Fax: 815-319-6881 WINNEBAGO COUNTY (Court Appointed Special Advocate) CASA PROGRAM WELCOMES NEW CASAs Rockford, IL – Winnebago County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program recently welcomed 12 new CASA volunteers. After completion of class instruction, they were sworn in by Judge Mary Linn Green. . The graduates are: Mike Harvey, Kathy Hoople, Carrie Holmes, Nancy Borchardt, Lauria Johnson, Sehade Sejdini, Amy Reul, Tina Nunez, Kathy Laird, Pat Fausett, Peter Damby, and Sharon Pickett. CASA is a program which provides the Juvenile Abuse & Neglect Court Judge with trained community volunteers to serve as Guardians ad litem for abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of a child; the goal of every CASA volunteer is a safe, permanent home for each child. Our mission is to assist the Court in seeking the best interests of abused and neglected children through court-appointed volunteer advocacy. Contributor Zan Picchioni February 2013 8 NEWS RELEASE From: Zan Picchioni, Administrative Assistant Date: 1/21/13 Re: CASA Spring 2013 Training Announcement at the CASA Office FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO FIGHT CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT IN WINNEBAGO COUNTY Rockford, IL – I am for the child. Be a CASA volunteer. Winnebago County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) will hold Spring Training beginning April 2013. A commitment of 1-1/2 years to 2 years is required following training in order to keep consistency in the lives of the children with whom you’ll be working. Volunteers must be 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. A criminal background check will also be done. CASA represents children who have been abused and neglected, advocating for their best interests in Juvenile Abuse & Neglect Court, with the goal of finding a safe, permanent home for every child. A child in Winnebago County needs you to advocate for them in court, needs you to listen to them, needs you to hear them. Over 1,500 cases come in to Juvenile Abuse & Neglect Court each year, and our CASA volunteers are currently advocating for 262 cases. Please give consideration to becoming a CASA. Many of our CASAs who advocate for CASA children work full time. Contributor Zan Picchioni February 2013 9 What to do with that used toner cartridge? Inkjet and laser toner cartridges are being collected for recycling. All proceeds go to the Winnebago County Animal Services Auxiliary. Please send cartridges to Melissa Kotrba at the Sheriff’s Administration Office (319-6000) or to Winnebago County Animal Services. So far this year, the recycling program has raised $77.00 and kept as many cartridges out of our landfill. Thank you to everyone who has participated in this effort. (Note: No Cartridge World cartridges please. They are not accepted by the recycling company.) February 2013 10 February 2013 11 What a colorful treat for Valentine’s ! Recipe corner Berry Trifle (BHG recipes) Submitted by Liz Asprooth Yields – 8-10 servings / Prep time: 25mins / Chill time: 4 hours Ingredients 1 4-serving size package of instant vanilla pudding mix 2 Cups milk 1 8oz cream cheese, softened 1 6oz container vanilla yogurt 1 10 3/4oz frozen loaf pound cake, thawed and cubed (3/4in cubes) 6 cups strawberries, quartered 2 cups blueberries and/or raspberries 1 recipe Berry Sauce (below) Directions Prepare pudding mix according to package directions using the milk; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and yogurt with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth; stir in pudding To assemble trifle, in a 2 1/2 to 3-quart glass bowl, layer 1/3 of the cake cubes, 1/3 of the pudding mixture and 1/3 of the strawberries and blueberries/raspberries. Repeat layers twice. Cover and chill 4 to 24 hours. Spoon Berry Sauce onto individual serving plates; top with trifle. Makes 8 –10 servings. Berry Sauce (BHG recipes) Yields - 1 Cup Ingredients 2 cups fresh or frozen (thawed) strawberries or raspberries 2-3 Tbsp of sugar 1 Tbsp raspberry liqueur, rum, or orange juice Directions In a blender or food processor, combine fruit, sugar, and liquid. Cover and blend or process until smooth. If desired, press sauce through a fine–mesh sieve to remove seeds. Cover and chill until serving time or up to 24 hours. I graduated from Rockford East in 1971 and then attended Northern Illinois University (NIU) from 1971-1975 were I majored in physical education and received a minor in history. From 1975 to 1978 I played professional football for the St. Louis Cardinals that are now known as the Arizona Cardinals. From 1978 to 1979 I played professional football for the LA Rams that are now known as the St. Louis Rams.
