N°143 - March 14, 2008 EE FR WEEKLY St-Barth Local News in English Published by “Le Journal de Saint-Barth” 05 90 27 65 19 - [email protected] Yves Nadal at Art Gallery Carole G. ■■■■■■■ Saint-Barth: SENATORIAL ELECTIONS IN SEPTEMBER Not implicated in the French municipal elections taking place on Sunday, the young Overseas Collectivity of Saint Barthélemy will have its own elections later in 2008. However the voters will not get to cast their ballots as the senatorial elections that take place next September are only for the “super delegates,” of which there are only a dozen, and they will elect the senator of Saint Barthélemy who will represent the island in France. These delegates include a delegation from the territorial council that will be decided upon in an internal election in July, as well as the deputy for the region, Victorin Lurel. The exact date of the vote is not yet known but should be announced by early August. For the moment, no one has thrown their hat in the ring for this parliamentary seat— a seat that is of double interest. Firstly, it represents the first time that Saint Barth will have direct representation in the French Parliament, and while waiting for the day the island gets to elect a deputy, the senator will be the only national elected official from the Collectivity. Secondly, it comes with the comfortable perks given to French senators. 28th Edition of the Heineken Regatta : Panthera Dominates in Spinnaker 1 Division ©Bob Grieser Crowds gathered in Saint Martin last weekend for the 28th edition of the Heineken Regatta. On Friday morning, the first day of racing, 289 boats, divided into 20 different classes, were on the starting line, including three from Saint Barth: Mischievous, Speedy Nemo, and Nacra of St Barts. The weather conditions? High seas, strong winds for the first two days, weakening for the final races on Sunday, March 9. The big winner in the top class, Spinnaker 1, which included eight boats, was Panthera, a magnificent TP 52 which came in first in all five regattas. Speedy Nemo Suffers In Heineken Regatta Aboard Speedy Nemo, Raymond Magras’ Dufour 34, “we definitely suffered due to the weather conditions,” explains Magras. “With 25 to 30 knots of wind, and rough seas, the 28th edition of the Heineken was quite a dramatic event. The first race on Friday— an around the island regatta—was difficult for the nine crew members of Speedy Nemo. During this first day, the wind was blowing from the east with gusts as hgh as 35 knots and waves as high as eight feet. The genoa that we used for this first regatta had a surface that was too large. The result: the boat, with too much sail, tended to luff. As a result, Speedy Nemo finished in 12th place in our class. On Saturday, three races were on the program: the morning saw two races in front of Simpson Bay, and a third between Simpson Bay and Marigot in the afternoon. Just before the start of the first course, we had a problem with the large sail which was caught in the top of the mast.... that meant we could simply forget the first race as we had to head back to port to repair the sail. For the next three races, we finished 10th twice and then 12th in the last race on Sunday. Out of 15 boats in the Spinnaker 7 class, Speedy Némo finished in 12th place.” But even this disappointing finish has not discouraged the crew from planning to participate in the Captain Oliver regatta in May. Älva Back In Saint Barth Ä lva is back. Pulling into the harbor on Monday evening, this Swedish educational boat—which first visited the island about a month ago—left again on Thursday to continue its journey. A journey that will take its 34 guests— 32 marine biology students whose average age is 18, all from the Maritime Centre of Dandryd, on the outskirts of Stockholm, and their two professors— to Barbuda, Nevis, and Sint Maarten before setting off on the transatlantic return voyage via the Faial Islands, Sao Miguel, and the Azores archipelago. Älva, which anchored near Gros îlets, is a 144’ three-masted schooner constructed in 1939, and which serves as the home base for an educational voyage. When sailing, it deploys 600 square meters of sails. The 34 persons aboard arrived in Sint Maarten last Saturday and on Monday after- Claude and Jean Yves Lefort at Gallery Porta 34 Jean-Yves Lefort returns to Gallery Porta 34, as of Friday with a new exhibit. Entitled “From My Native Country: Africa, To The Country I Love: Saint Barthélemy,” the exhibit pays tribute to the continent where he was born: Jean-Yves Lefort was born in Brazzaville in the Congo— and to the island where he now lives, Saint Barthélemy, which he discovered over 30 years ago. JeanYves is sharing the exhibit with his wife, Claude, who is showing her collection of cardboard furniture. After working in mosaics, about three years ago she started fabricating furniture made of recycled cardboard and covered with Nepalese paper, handmade from fiber of the Lotka bush, which grows easily in the Himalayas. From a child’s chair to a chest of drawers by way of night-tables, each piece is one-of-a-kind. noon set sail for Saint Barth, the first stop on a four-week tour of the West Indies. The association, Saint Barth Friends of Sweden (ASBAS), welcomed them to the island, and hopes that Älva’s visits represent reinforcement of the bonds between Sweden and Saint Barth. They organized a guided tour late Tuesday morning and a visit to Grand Cul de Sac on Wednesday morning. International Women’s Day The Lyceum Club Honors Uranie Gréaux The Lyceum Club, which annually selects a “woman of the year,, decided to bestow this honor on Uranie Gréaux this year. On Saturday, March 8, the 31st celebration of International Women’s Day—created by the United Nations—the Lyceum Club organized a special event in the reception hall at the Capitainerie. Uranie Gréaux, who already received Saint Barth’s bronze medal of honor on August 24, 2002, was selected for her former role as diector of the school in Colombier and its implication in local life. Claude and Jean-Yves Lefort, March 14-20, from 10am12:30am and 4-8pm, Gallery Porta 34, Gustavia 04 St Barth Weekly n°143 ■■■■■■■ Artists Showed Their Wares F rom Friday, February 29 - Tuesday, March 4, ten artists showed their work at Jenny May’s pottery studio in Gustavia. Jenny took this initiative in order to showcase the work of artists who have never–or infre- quently—exhibited in tent (less than two pounds) Saint Barth. This provided of Michel and the “Heart an opportunity to see the of Saint Barth,” made of work of local artists, white gold and pink sapinclduing some island phire by the promising talnatives. The pieces included the miniature wood Equitation Competition sculptures by Rudi Magras, the lightweight ent of Nathalie Gumbs. One could also discover a painting by Madame Duguet, completed for quite some time by never exhibited, as well as paper maché fish, decorated glasses. and a watercolor series, “Beach in Saint Barth,” by Lea Water, all of which was created during her three month stay on the island. Also in the show was the silver jewelry and/or stones and earls by Benita, who has lived in Indonesia since 2000, after spending many years in Saint Barth where she painted on silk. A great event that should happen more frequently. Third Obstacle Event Organized by Raphaëlle, manager of the ranch in Flamands, the third day of the obstacle jumping competition took place on Sunday, March 9 at the island’s equestrian center. The day’s program included demonstrations by the youngest riders as well as two obstacle jumping events. The 06 course was comprised of several obstacles with bars as high as 36” inches from the ground. The winner of the day was Sarah Soret who did not make any mistakes. She took top honors over Audrey Dessouches, Amanda Manjin, Nicolas Mercadal, and Scarlet Blanchard. St Barth Weekly n°143 ■■■■■■■ People Watch Sue Mcnally, painter “I never wanted to be much of anything else,” says artist Sue McNally, whose work is on display at Les Artisans in Gustavia throughout the month of March. “I wanted to be an artist since I was a child,” she confirms. McNally, who lives in Newport, Rhode Island with her husband Doug, studied at the University of Rhode Island then at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. She worked with clay as a child, before taking an interest in drawing and painting. Her canvases—mostly done in oil paint—tend to be large: the ones in exhibit in Saint Barth are smaller than average, but range from 36x36” to 50x50” as well as two diptyches (pairs of paintings) that measure 36” high by 72” across. L’Esprit Salines Restaurant Dinner Daily Menu Asian Lunch Menu NEWTake Away Tropical Garden come & taste the difference Close to Salines Beach Reservations 0590 52 46 10 [email protected] The paintings are deceptively simple, but as McNally says: “The shapes and colors are complex; composition, distance, and space are important, and how your eye travels through it is important as well.” McNally was invited to Saint Barth by her friend Annalisa Gee, who lives on the island, but is also from Newport, R.I.: “She invited to me visit and paint,” says McNally, whose mother is from the island of Majorca. “Saint Barth reminded me of Majorca topographically, so I felt a little connected to it that way. The major thing I like in Saint Barth is the perspective. You can get up high and enjoy expansive overviews. I don’t get that in Newport, but Doug and I go to Utah often and I paint there as well.” Another thing McNally appreciates in Saint Barth is the color of the water: “Newport is on the water, but the color is completely different. The light is different as well.” The eight paintings at Les 08 Artisans were painted from various viewpoints on the island, including Toiny, Saline, Grand Fond, and Colombier, where she made a drawing of the panorama from the scenic overlook, then made a painting of it, rather than battle the wind with a large canvas. “Everything I do, I want it to appear exactly as the place I painted it, and be recognized by the people who live in that environment,” says McNally. “I hope the local population will filter out the abstractions I add.” One of McNally’s strongest aspects is her sense of color: bold, saturated colors that are an exaggeration of what she actually sees. “I can only says its intuitive,” she explains. “Something of my own I developed over time, I never took a color theory class.” If McNally sees a dead tree in the desert, it would actually be pale gray. But she might paint it bright white. “There is both an abstract and realistic quality in every painting.” McNally’s work has caught the eye of collectors and she recently got very good news: she sold her first piece to a museum. The prestigious Rhode Island School of Design purchased a seascape she painted in New England at King’s Beach. In addition to these brightly colored landscapes, McNally also does drawings in charcoal and pencil—mostly selfportraits. “When I was younger I did them to find out who I was,” she says. “Now I find it really entertaining.” By Ellen Lampert-Gréaux St Barth Weekly n°143 GASTRONOMY ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Gustavia Toiny Au Port Bête à Z’Ailes Carl Gustaf (Le) Café Victoire Caviar Island Do Brazil Eddy’s Restaurant Jao La Crêperie La Mandala La Marine La Route des Boucaniers Le Bistro La Saladerie Le Sapotiller O’Corner Le Vietnam Pipiri Palace Repaire des Rebelles The Strand Ti Zouk K’fé Wall House 05.90.27 62 36 05 90 29 74 09 05.90.29 79 00 05.90.29.02.39 09 90 52 46 11 05.90.29 06 66 05.90.27 54 17 05.90.29 52 24 05 90 27 84 07 05.90.27 96 96 05.90.27 68 91 05.90.27 73 00 05.90.27 51 51 05 90 27 52 48 05.90.27 60 28 05.90.51.00.05 05 90 27 81 37 05.90.27 53 20 05.90.27 72 48 05.90.27.63.77 05 90 27 90 60 05.90.27 71 83 Saline Le Gaïac (Hôtel Le Toiny) 05.90.27.88 88 Saint Jean Eden Rock Hideaway Kiki e Mo Le Diamant Le Jardin Le Glacier Le Piment La Plage Le Cesar Nikki Beach “Z” 05.90.29 79 99 05.90.27.63.62 05.90.27.70.47 05 90 29 21 97 05 90 27 73 62 05 90 27 71 30 05.90.27.53.88 05.90.27.53.13 05.90.27 70 67 05.90.27.64.64 05 90 27 53 00 Pointe Milou Ti St-Barth 05.90.27 97 71 Grand Cul de Sac Bartoloméo (Hôtel Guanahani) Indigo (Hôtel Guanahani) Kazz’n Blues Restaurant des pêcheurs (Le Sereno) 05.90.27 66 60 05 90 27 66 60 05 90 52 21 26 05.90.29.83.00 Colombier Esprit Saline Grain de Sel Le Tamarin Pacri 05.90.52 46 10 05.90.52 46 05 05 90 27 72 12 05.90.29.35.63 Lorient K’fé Massaï Le Bouchon Le Wok Le Portugal à St Barth 05.90.29 76 78 05 90 27 79 39 05 90 27 52 52 05 90 27 68 59 Corossol Le Régal 05.90.29 85 26 François Plantation Les Bananiers 05.90.29 80 22 05.90.27.93.48 Flamands Chez Rolande La Case de l’Ile La Langouste Taïwana 05.90.29 76 78 05.90.27 61 81 05.90.27.63.61 05.90.27 65 01 Anse des Cayes Chez Ginette Chez Yvon Fellini Ristorante (Hôtel Le Manapany) 05.90.27.66.11 05.90.29 86 81 05.90.27.66.55 Lurin Vitet Hostellerie des 3 Forces 05 90 27 61 25 Santa Fé 05.90.27.61.04 St Barth WEEKLY Published by "Le Journal de Saint-Barth" ISSN-1766-9278 Ph. : 05.90.27.65.19 Fax : 05.90.27.91.60 e m a i l : s t b a r t h w e e k l y @ w a n a d o o . f r www.stbarthweekly.com Director & layout : Avigaël Haddad Chief Editor: Pierrette Guiraute, Translation : Ellen Lampert Greaux, Photographe : Rosemond Greaux Impression : Daily Herald 10 Stay in touch WHEREVER YOU ARE EVERY FRIDAY AT www.stbarthweekly.com St Barth Weekly n°143 TIME OUT ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Where to go dancing?
