N°127 - November 23, 2007 Published by “Le Journal de Saint-Barth” 05 90 27 65 19 - [email protected] Welcome © Rosemond Gréaux EE FR WEEKLY St-Barth Local News in English to St Barths! ■■■■■■■ Sand Returns To The Beach In Saint Jean WEEKLY KICKS OFF FIFTH SEASON! Here we are again at the beginning of another winter season, and we are happy to be back on the scene with the first issue of the St. Barth Weekly, now in its fifth year. Whether you come to the island frequently or are a firsttime visitor, we hope you’ll enjoy The Saint Barth Weekly, the baby brother of the Journal de Saint Barth, our weekly French newspaper. An English language publication, The Weekly covers the island from all angles, allowing you to keep your finger on the pulse of local politics, news, arts, and cultural events. The Weekly is free and comes out every Friday from November through the end of July. Pick up a copy at your hotel, at the tourist office in Gustavia, or at numerous restaurants and boutiques. Please feel free to offer your suggestions about things you’d like to see in The Weekly, and once you leave the island you can stay in touch by down-loading The Weekly’s electronic version at www.stbarthweekly.com. 02 S tripped of sand by major erosion due to hurricanes Luis and Lenny, as well as walls built along the beach and an unsuccessful attempt to add sand to the beach in 2000, the beach in Saint Jean is finally getting some of its soft golden sand back. A project to add sand to the beach was launched in late October by the hotel association in collaboration with the local government. The government, which sees this as the first step in a global plan to protect the bay of Saint Jean, required that the volume of sand dredged not be less than 30,000 cubic meters. The goal of this is two-fold: to return the sand to the beach and to remove excess sand from the coral reef. That is why sand is being taken from the length of the reef, between the reef and the beach, with the possibility that additional sand will also be taken from outside the reef. The operation should be completed by early December. For security measures, all nautical activities are forbidden in the bay, and swimming is allowed only outside of the zone between the end of the runway and the south point of the bay. A second dredging operation may be planned for the spring, in order to bring another 30,000 cubic meters of sand to the beach, as the total volume of miss- ing sand is estimated between 60,000 and 80,000 cubic meters. FINANCING NEEDED Nine euros: that is the cost for each cubic meter of sand in this project. That means a total budget of approximately 270,000 euros that the hotel association must find, as the project did not receive public funding. A description of the project, as well as photos, can be found a blog created by the association expressly for this project: www.stjeanbay.blogspot.com Stay in touch WHEREVER YOU ARE EVERY FRIDAY AT w w w. s t b a r t h w e e k l y. c o m St Barth Weekly n°127 ■■■■■■■ 17th Edition of the Gustavialoppet Third win for Eddy Romil; a first for Myriam Benchabane N ever two without three: winner for the past two years, Eddy Romil of Guadeloupe took top honors for the third year in a row, winning the Gustavialoppet 2007, a 10km race that celebrates the island’s Franco-Swedish friendship. “Speedy Eddy,” as he has been nicknamed, Swedish group left his adversaries in the dust, running the 10 kilometers in 34 minutes and 45 seconds, more than two minutes ahead of the second place winner. Pushing herself to the limit (she felt a little faint at the finish line), Myriam Benchabane of Saint Barth improved her time by almost two minutes to take first place this year, topping her second place win last year. There were 88 runners on the starting line at the sports stadium in St Jean at 7:30am on Sunday, November 18, including 54 from Saint Barth, 15 from Guadeloupe, five from Saint Martin, two Venezue- Meanwhile : Vinaigrette Is Top Dog! Did you ever think a dog would show up on the starting line of the Gustavialoppet? That’s exactly what happened last Sunday, when Vinaigrette, a three-year old Creole mix, made her first appearance in the 10km minimarathon, finishing the race in 52 minutes and 42 seconds, at an average speed of 11km/hour. She ran alongside her master, Léon, who finished in 49th place. Vinaigrette goes jogging on a regular basis—twice a week with Léon. On Sunday, as the race requires, she wore the official Gustavialoppet t-shirt; then wore Léon’s medal proudly around her neck, as seen in our photo. Was Vinaigrette tired? “No more than I was,” says Léon. “When we got home she was running after lizards.” It’s a dog’s life. 04 Myriam Benchabane Eddy Romil lans, one Italian, and a group of 11 runners who came especially from Sweden for the event. The itinerary was the same as last year: a large circle around the salt pond in St. Jean before heading toward Gustavia past the airport and climbing the wellnamed “Col de la tourmente,” the first challenge of the race. The runners then head through Public into town and back to St. Jean via the large hill called the “Calvaire,” the second difficult part of the race. The race finishes where it began, in front of the stadium. The Gustavialoppet (“the race of Gustavia” in Swedish) was created 17 years ago. According Nils Dufau, the current president of ASBAS, the Saint Barth Friends of Sweden Association, “the race got started thanks to an older Swede who took to running alone on the roads of Saint Barthélemy. A few years later, he was with a few friends at Le Select and they decided it would be good to create a race open to all runners from Saint Barth, Sweden, and elsewhere. That is how the municipality at the time, in close collaboration with ASBAS, joined forces to open this race to all interested. Since then, the Gustavialoppet has continued to evolve, and at the same time continue to reinforce the friendship and historic bonds between Sweden and Saint Barthélemy, making them ever stronger than before! Today, the race is an important event.” In The Skies JETBLUE TO FLY FROM JFK TO JULIANA AS OF JANUARY jetBlue Airways has annonced a new route from New York—JFK—to Juliana airport in Sint Maarten. According to their website, this new flight will run on a daily basis. The inaugural flight is planned for January 17, 2008, with a price starting at $350 round trip. The flight will leave JFK at 8:30am to reach St. Maarten by early afternoon: perfect timing for a worry free transfer to Saint Barth. St Barth Weekly n°127 L’Esprit Salines Restaurant ■■■■■■■ Parking in Gustavia A Blue Zone and Parking Meters On The Horizon Dinner Daily Menu Asian Lunch Menu Take Away Tropical Garden Close to Salines Beach Reservation 0590 52 46 10 [email protected] E veryone knows that traffic and parking can be simply impossible in Gustavia once the season hits full stride. That situation should be improved considerably this year with the advent of special “blue” parking zones in the streets along the waterfront, from the pharmacy to the Route des Boucaniers, as well as in the Rue de Place d’Armes. The parking spots along the Quai de la République will also be “blue” temporarily, for as long as it takes to install parking meters, making this the first paid parking area in Gustavia. Work began October 29 to define the “blue” zone and install the French-style parking meters. The new rules will go into effect “after an informational campaign explaining the new parking options in Gustavia,” explains Maxime Desouches, a member of the island’s executive council, who is in charge of the project. He sees these first steps as part of a larger plan: “We hope that this will encourage residents to make sensible decisions, such as car-pooling. We are also aware of the urgent need for a public transportation system, which is essential to reduce the traffic which is more congested than ever. PARKING DISK PROVIDED BY CAR RENTAL AGENCIES In order to park in the blue zone, a parking disk will be obligatory. They do not yet exist, but the disks will be free for all residents as well as tourists, who should find a disk in each rental car. Every year, the staff of Saint Barth Properties invites its clients to celebrate the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau. The tasting of the 2007 vintage took place at the Cellier du Gouverneur in Gustavia, on Wednesday, November 14. It is considered a classic vintage, very fruity and lively, with hints of red cherry, fresh raspberry and crushed strawberries. For the first time this year, there is also a rosé version, with 400,000 bottles for sale; a mere drop in the bucket compared to the 50 million bottles of classic Beaujolais Nouveau, of which almost half (47%) is sold outside of France. Patrick Chevailler Inaugurates the Carole G. Art Gallery On November 15, Carole Gruson opened a new gallery space for artists from the maritime world in the area between her restaurant La Marine and the Yacht Club in Gustavia. Called the Carole G. Art Gallery, this new space was inaugurated by painter Patrick Chevailler with a show based on underwater scenes. After having painting all sorts of old sailboats for 20 years, the brushes of Patrick Chevailler—who is an emergency doctor and diver—took a plunge into the big blue to create colorful canvases that are faithful representations of the world of silence under the sea. A world you can discover at the Carole G Art Gallery in Gustavia until the end of December. 08 Welcome in St Barth St Barth Weekly n°127 GASTRONOMY ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Gustavia Toiny Au Port Bête à Z’Ailes Carl Gustaf (Le) Café Victoire Caviar Island Do Brazil Eddy’s Restaurant Jao La Crêperie La Gamelle La Mandala La Marine La Route des Boucaniers Le Bistro La Saladerie Le Sapotiller O’Corner Le Vietnam Pipiri Palace Repaire des Rebelles The Strand Ti Zouk K’fé Wall House 05.90.27 62 36 05 90 29 74 09 05.90.29 79 00 05.90.29.02.39 09 90 52 46 11 05.90.29 06 66 05.90.27 54 17 05.90.29 52 24 05 90 27 84 07 05 90 29 89 70 05.90.27 96 96 05.90.27 68 91 05.90.27 73 00 05.90.27 51 51 05 90 27 52 48 05.90.27 60 28 05.90.51.00.05 05 90 27 81 37 05.90.27 53 20 05.90.27 72 48 05 90 27 63 77 05 90 27 90 60 05.90.27 71 83 Saline Le Gaïac (Hôtel Le Toiny) 05.90.27 88 88 Saint Jean Tantra Eden Rock Hideaway Nikki Beach Le Diamant Le Jardin Le Glacier Le Piment La Plage Le Cesar “Z” 05 90 27 68 09 05.90.29 79 99 05.90.27.63.62 05.90.27.64.64 05 90 29 21 97 05 90 27 73 62 05 90 27 71 30 05.90.27.53.88 05.90.27.53.13 05.90.27 70 67 05 90 27 53 00 Pointe Milou Ti St-Barth 05.90.27 97 71 Grand Cul de Sac Bartoloméo (Hôtel Guanahani) 05.90.27 66 60 Indigo (Hôtel Guanahani) 05 90 27 66 60 Kazz’n Blues 06.90.54.95.67 Restaurant des pêcheurs (Hôtel Le Sereno) 05.90.29.83.00 Colombier Esprit Saline Grain de Sel Le Tamarin Pacri 05.90.52 46 10 05.90.52 46 05 05 90 27 72 12 05.90.29.35.63 Lorient K’fé Massaï Le Wok Le Portugal à St Barth 05.90.29 76 78 05 90 27 52 52 05 90 27 68 59 Corossol Le Régal 05.90.29 85 26 Vitet François Plantation Les Bananiers 05.90.29 80 22 05.90.27.93.48 Flamands Chez Rolande La Case de l’Ile La Langouste Taïwana 05.90.29 76 78 05.90.27 61 81 05.90.27.63.61 05.90.27 65 01 Anse des Cayes Chez Ginette Chez Yvon Fellini Ristorante (Hôtel Le Manapany) 05.90.27.66.11 05.90.29 86 81 05.90.27.66.55 Lurin Hostellerie des 3 Forces 05 90 27 61 25 Santa Fé 05.90.27.61.04 St Barth WEEKLY Published by "Le Journal de Saint-Barth" ISSN-1766-9278 Ph. : 05.90.27.65.19 Fax : 05.90.27.91.60 e m a i l : s t b a r t h w e e k l y @ w a n a d o o . f r www.stbarthweekly.com Director & layout : Avigaël Haddad Chief Editor: Pierrette Guiraute, Translation : Ellen Lampert Greaux, Photographe : Rosemond Greaux Impression : Daily Herald 10 Stay in touch WHEREVER YOU ARE EVERY FRIDAY AT www.stbarthweekly.com St Barth Weekly n°127 TIME OUT ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Where to go dancing?
