The largest indoor jazz festival in the world, Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival celebrates its fortieth edition and its tenth year in Rotterdam. The thirteen rooms of the Ahoy Rotterdam complex are fully packed for three days with celebrities and talents from the world of jazz, soul, blues, funk, hip hop, world music and pop. With this year’s big draws: Mary J. Blige, D’Angelo, Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Lionel Richie and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga. But there is, as always, plenty of room for the more “traditional” jazz. The mix of big stars and pure jazz has been the great strength of the festival since the first edition in 1976, says North Sea Jazz Festival director Jan Willem Luyken. The unique concept of North Sea Jazz Festival attracts nearly 75,000 people to Ahoy each year. Luyken: “North Sea Jazz-founder Paul Ackett loved pure jazz, but also had a commercial attitude. He thought: It’s all well and good if I just book bands that I love, but then there will be too few people showing up, so I better add some big stars. By using multiple stages, I also expose people to lesser known music. We still use this philosophy today.” “The mix of big stars and pure jazz has been the great strength of the festival since the first edition in 1976.” Jan Willem Luyken Festival Director Luyken discovered the festival as a thirteen year old boy, taken by the hand by his father. “Since 1982, I went with him to the festival. It was a revelation. One moment I was sitting in the front row at Oscar Peterson and the next I saw Pat Metheny and Miles Davis performing. And all that in one weekend! It was a kind of rollercoaster ride and it has left an indelible impression. Later I developed my own taste. I still went with my father but he would go right and I’d turn left to see my own bands. I was raised with North Sea. In that respect it is very special that I later got to be the director. I occasionally still have those moments when I think, ‘wow, what happiness and how privileged I am’.’’ > 5 >>“We create a kind of jazz planet in Ahoy,” says Luyken. “Everything is under one roof, in one weekend. You can create your own festival. If you want to listen to intense artistic music all night, then you can, but you can also spend the whole evening being entertained by great artists. There are art shows, shops, book signings, workshops, Q&A’s with artists, clinics and a restaurant with a Michelin-star chef. This festival differs from others. You often see jazz festivals that last for two weeks, where you have to buy separate tickets, in various venues around the city. Look at Montreux or Montreal. This way of doing things is unique.” The special atmosphere at North Sea Jazz is definitely remarkable. Not just for the audience, but also for the artists themselves. Luyken: “All artists are in Rotterdam at the exact same time. They go to each other’s concerts, develop new collaborations, or spontaneously end up together on stage or jam afterwards at an after party. It’s one of the many reasons that artists like to play here. And for the audience it’s nice that they get to experience these very special moments.” “Prince can always give me a call. We’ll make room for him!” One of those special moments were the three night concerts that Prince gave in 2011. “The special thing was that he offered it himself. He knew what we do and understands the festival well. His father was a jazz musician and Prince himself builds bridges between soul, funk, pop and rock. The whole program was ready and then we got that phone call with the question: “Can I come play with you in the night?’ Then you’re obviously very proud. It’s the best thing that can happen to a festival organization. It says something about the quality and how much artists want to play here.” Looking at the programming of 2015 Lady Gaga is at first glance a stranger in the midst. Luyken: “The pop star Lady Gaga would of course never play here. She would also not want to, but now she is here with a jazz project together with the legendary Tony Bennett. She surprised a lot of people with this, but she can really sing amazingly well. Further highlights include John Legend and D’Angelo, the soul sensation of this year. And we’ve wanted Mary J. Blige for a long time. Lionel Richie as soul pioneer, and Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are on tour together for the first time in 37 years. This year the program came together very fast. But Prince can always give me a call. We’ll make room for him!”_ 6 FESTIVAL GUIDE 2015 More jazz festivals in 2015 LantarenVenster, jazz podium BIRD and Dizzy have jazz concerts throughout the year.
