Welcome to
Rotterdam
festival city
Rotterdam is a true festival city with dozens of
in- and outdoor festivals every year. It came as
no surprise that the city was declared IFEA World
Festival & Event City in 2010, in the category
medium-sized cities.
During the summer months the city offers a wide
range of outdoor festivals, often in the city center
or in the city parks. Many Rotterdammers come
outside and enjoy the lively festival atmosphere
in the city. You will find music, theater, poetry
and dance. Check out this festival guide for an
overview!
In this festival guide you will also read all about
the iconic events Rotterdam offers every year:
Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival, Robin
Rotterdam Unlimited and Wereldhavendagen
(World Port Days).
Have lots of festival fun!

FESTIVAL GUIDE 2015
FRI 10 jul – SUN 12 jul 2015
Interview and photos Dimitri Hakke
Party time! The largest indoor jazz festival in the
world, Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival
celebrates its fortieth edition and its tenth year
in Rotterdam. The thirteen rooms of the Ahoy
Rotterdam complex are fully packed for three days
with celebrities and talents from the world of jazz,
soul, blues, funk, hip hop, world music and pop. With
this year’s big draws: Mary J. Blige, D’Angelo, Chick
Corea & Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Lionel Richie
and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga. But there is, as
always, plenty of room for the more “traditional” jazz.
The mix of big stars and pure jazz has been the great
strength of the festival since the first edition in 1976,
says North Sea Jazz Festival director Jan Willem
Luyken. The unique concept of North Sea Jazz
Festival attracts nearly 75,000 people to Ahoy each
year. Luyken: “North Sea Jazz-founder Paul Ackett
loved pure jazz, but also had a commercial attitude.
He thought: It’s all well and good if I just book bands
that I love, but then there will be too few people
showing up, so I better add some big stars. By using
multiple stages, I also expose people to lesser known
music. We still use this philosophy today.”
“The mix of big stars and pure
jazz has been the great strength
of the festival since the first
edition in 1976.”
Jan Willem Luyken
Festival Director
Luyken discovered the festival as a thirteen year
old boy, taken by the hand by his father. “Since
1982, I went with him to the festival. It was a
revelation. One moment I was sitting in the front
row at Oscar Peterson and the next I saw Pat
Metheny and Miles Davis performing.
And all that in one weekend! It was a kind of
rollercoaster ride and it has left an indelible
impression. Later I developed my own taste. I still
went with my father but he would go right and I’d
turn left to see my own bands. I was raised with
North Sea. In that respect it is very special that
I later got to be the director. I occasionally still
have those moments when I think, ‘wow, what
happiness and how privileged I am’.’’ >
5
>>“We create a kind of jazz planet in Ahoy,” says Luyken.
“Everything is under one roof, in one weekend. You can
create your own festival. If you want to listen to intense
artistic music all night, then you can, but you can also
spend the whole evening being entertained by great
artists. There are art shows, shops, book signings,
workshops, Q&A’s with artists, clinics and a restaurant
with a Michelin-star chef. This festival differs from others.
You often see jazz festivals that last for two weeks, where
you have to buy separate tickets, in various venues around
the city. Look at Montreux or Montreal. This way of doing
things is unique.”
The special atmosphere at North Sea Jazz is definitely
remarkable. Not just for the audience, but also for the
artists themselves. Luyken: “All artists are in Rotterdam
at the exact same time. They go to each other’s concerts,
develop new collaborations, or spontaneously end up
together on stage or jam afterwards at an after party.
It’s one of the many reasons that artists like to play here.
And for the audience it’s nice that they get to experience
these very special moments.”
“Prince can always give me a call.
We’ll make room for him!”
One of those special moments were the three night
concerts that Prince gave in 2011. “The special thing
was that he offered it himself. He knew what we do
and understands the festival well. His father was a jazz
musician and Prince himself builds bridges between
soul, funk, pop and rock. The whole program was ready
and then we got that phone call with the question: “Can
I come play with you in the night?’ Then you’re obviously
very proud. It’s the best thing that can happen to a festival
organization. It says something about the quality and how
much artists want to play here.”
Looking at the programming of 2015 Lady Gaga is at
first glance a stranger in the midst. Luyken: “The pop
star Lady Gaga would of course never play here. She
would also not want to, but now she is here with a jazz
project together with the legendary Tony Bennett. She
surprised a lot of people with this, but she can really sing
amazingly well. Further highlights include John Legend
and D’Angelo, the soul sensation of this year. And we’ve
wanted Mary J. Blige for a long time. Lionel Richie as
soul pioneer, and Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are on
tour together for the first time in 37 years. This year the
program came together very fast. But Prince can always
give me a call. We’ll make room for him!”_

Celebrating
cultural
diversity
Text Deniece van Wildschut
Block your agenda from Tuesday 21
till Saturday 25 July. Because that is
when one of the biggest festivals in the
Netherlands will celebrate the cultural
diversity that makes Rotterdam the port
city that it is!
Imagine the most beautiful, eye-catching outfits. Months of
work, you can see that immediately. And the whole city is
blocked off for the Summer Carnival Street Parade. Titillating
music sounds around you, happy faces all around and you feel
like you are a part of the festival and of the city. Five days long,
a spectacle for young and old - for everyone! - with music and
good food, large and small acts, film, theater, poetry & spoken
word, and more. And that from all over the world.
It suits Rotterdam, where as many as 174 different cultures
and nationalities live together. Robin Rotterdam Unlimited
is an excellent opportunity to get to know the city for real. “It
shows you what Rotterdam is and demonstrates the cultural
diversity it stands for,” says Rodney Lont of Ducos Productions.
“It introduces you to the city’s DNA, all those 174 cultures and
nationalities that make Rotterdam what it is. You experience that
during this event. The city on the Maas in all its glory. “
Robin Rotterdam Unlimited is an amalgamation of two popular
Rotterdam festivals: Dunya and the Summer Carnival, and
annually attracts around 900,000 visitors from home and
abroad. >

Amsterdam, under the watchful eye of queen Máxima. Lont: “With this we go into
the deep. It’s about two people who look back on the life of their parents, who in
the sixties came to the Netherlands as guest workers. What did this do to them,
how did they experience that and what were the consequences?”
On Hofplein, Schouwburgplein and Eendrachtsplein you will find top artists and
young talent from home and abroad. Previous guests include Kool & the Gang
and Manu Chao. If in need for a break, a bite to eat or something to drink, or fun

Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe. A visit to the ports
is therefore a must for anyone staying in Rotterdam. You can
do this by taking a tour through the port or by visiting the
Euromast, where from a great height you have a magnificent
view over the Maas. But there is a much more exciting way
to discover the port: the large-scale event World Port Days in
September.
During this weekend thousands of
visitors are drawn to the city on the
river, from the Oude Haven to deep into
the ports, to experience the atmosphere.
There are many stalls along the quay and you can witness
demonstrations on the water, excursions in the port and
tours on ships. One of the highlights is the fireworks show on
Saturday night, a recurring part of the event, where magnificent
fireworks can be seen from the Erasmus Bridge.
Each year the World Port Days festival has a different theme. For
2015 the theme is The Dream Port. In the port of Rotterdam it is
all about nurturing and realizing dreams. The place itself started
as a dream when the construction of a dam in the river Rotte
began in 1270. During the event the focus is on old dreams that
have been realized and new dreams for the future._
