Please call the Parish Office (310) 285-5425 and/or contact Sister Virginia at the Office. Handicapped Accessible Our parish facilities are handicapped accessible via ramps and parking spaces. We welcome everyone. St. Vincent de Paul Society “Thank You.” Dear Parishioners, On behalf of everyone here at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and the poor we serve, thank you so much for your Bundle Sunday participation on May 31, 2015 to help us with our work. Your generosity, parishioners, goes far in helping those in need. All the donations will be put to good use as we continue to help our needy brothers and sisters in their struggles to find better lives for themselves and their children. The need for charitable efforts has increased greatly over the past several years, and we appreciate your help in assisting the needy within the Los Angeles Archdiocese. As you may know, Catholic lay volunteer members of our 140 Parish-based Conferences located throughout the Archdiocese work daily to help those people who need assistance in their communities. Our members and staff strive to do more than simply help the needy, and this is partly why all these generous donations do so much good. We also work with those we serve to help them learn ways to work toward a brighter future. Again, thank you for allowing these Bundle Sundays to continue in your parish. Yours in St. Vincent de Paul, David A. Garcia - Deputy Executive Director Professional Entertainment Fellowship On behalf of the entire committee and members of the Good Shepherd Professional Entertainment Fellowship, Chairman Jonathan Roumie would like to sincerely thank Father Tom for all he has done to promote, facilitate and help grow our very own Entertainment Ministry. We would not have had the impact or the reach we have been able to achieve, if not for his vision and belief in supporting such a group at the very beginning 3 years ago. He will be missed, though we fully expect to see him in the audience at future meetings! God Bless you, Father Tom. Spirituality, Prayer and Worship 4 Save the Date! It is a special time designed for children in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade to encounter the Bible at their level of understanding. As each child is created in God's image, he or she will have the opportunity to develop a personal relationship an Encounter - with Jesus Christ through the Gospel. During the Mass, the priest or deacon invites the children to come up to the front of the altar for a blessing. The leaders usher the children to the designated room prepared for them. Once the session concludes, the leaders assist the children back into the church to join their family for the rest of Mass. This is NOT a discontinuing or an interruption of Mass, but a continuum of the celebration of the whole Liturgy that constitutes the "Mass". For more information or if you would like to be trained as a CLoW leader, please contact Wendy Rappé at [email protected] or (310) 285-5425. Our Year with God’s Word Our Year with God’s Word, here in the parish, runs from Easter Sunday 2015 to Easter Sunday 2016. It was inspired by the Saint John’s Bible, which is the first hand inscribed and illuminated Bible in the last 500 years. It was a project of St. John’s College and Monastery in Collegeville, Minnesota. In the spirit of this work, we are offering some fun summertime events. Some of the art pieces in the St. John’s Bible are in the style of iconography. So on the following Saturday, July 18th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Good Shepherd Room, we will be watching some other brief film clips about the St. John’s Bible, and these will be followed by a demonstration of iconography offered by another parishioner (and parish wedding team coordinator), Mary Anne Cosgrove, who is an artist and iconographer. We hope you can join us. Please call the Parish Office (310) 285-5425 to reserve your space. Thinking about becoming a Catholic and/or Completing your Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation? Then, I invite you to read on and save the date! The Inquiry Sessions begins on September 9th, 7 - 9 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Did you know Jesus’ love will find you? Will you have the courage to accept the invitation? For more information, please call Sister Virginia at (310) 285-5425 or email [email protected] or Penny at (310) 739-8762. Prayer for Priestly Voca ons Father, in every generation you provide ministers of Christ and the Church. We come before you now, asking that you call forth more men to serve our Archdiocese in the ministerial priesthood. Give us priests who will lead and guide your holy people gathered by Word and Sacrament. Bless us with priestly vocations so that we can continue to be a truly Eucharistic Church, strengthened in our discipleship of Jesus Christ, your Only Son. Raise up, we pray, men who are generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts for your greater glory and for the good of your people. We make our prayer in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Year of Prayer for Priestly Vocations November 1, 2005 – October 31, 2006 Prayer for Priestly Vocations 6 Outreach, Service and Social Jus ce Need a Driver’s License and don’t have documenta on? Pre-Need Planning Making cemetery and mortuary arrangements in advance of need is both a loving and financially wise thing to do. Advance planning provides a family reassurance, comfort and peace of mind. Such thoughtfulness relieves family members from shouldering the burden during a most stressful time, allowing for careful decision making in an unhurried atmosphere, and assuring that your expressed wishes will be followed. The added affordability of working with today's prices as opposed to tomorrow's can also represent a significant savings. You owe it to yourself and to your family to explore the many advantages of advance planning. To know more, please call (310) 836-5500 ext. 1. A representative can answer any questions you may have. Help Create a Needy Family’s New Home Construct part of someone’s house: we could be roofing, painting or doing landscaping — it’s whatever they need done at that point in the build. But, don’t panic — there will be experts there to guide you, if you’ve never put up drywall! It is a very physical 8-3:30 day — but one that’s also VERY REWARDING! We will also need to raise about $2,500 to help with the house build. If you are interested in volunteering for this wonderful outreach project, please contact Milkah LoScalzo as soon as possible. Our Build Date is Saturday, August 15. When enough interested folks respond, we will have a brief meeting to begin to work out details. Junipero Serra Father Junípero Serra was a famous teacher. His students called him Dr. Serra, or Dr. Junípero. For several years following his ordination, Serra remained at Palma, as both student and teacher. He received a doctorate in theology and served as professor of theology at the Franciscan university in Palma from 1744 to 1749, when he sailed to Cádiz, Spain to fulfill his lifetime dream of being a missionary. Did You Know? Help children be aware of unhealthy behavior among others. Children have more opportunities to be out of your immediate sight during the summer. It’s important to remind your child that if another child or adult – including people they know and trust – try to touch them inappropriately they should: Say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused. Tell them to TRUST THEIR FEELINGS and be sure to TELL a trusted adult. And, it’s never too late to tell a trusted adult what happened. For a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, email: [email protected] California Safely Surrendered Baby Law California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law, www.babysafe.ca.gov, was first implemented in 2001 and became permanent law in 2006. The purpose of the law is to protect newborns from being hurt or killed because they are abandoned by mothers who are frightened or under severe duress and who feel they have no place to turn for help. The law saves babies’ lives: between January 1 and early July of this year six newborns were safely surrendered in Los Angeles County alone.
