Of course, the problems of business administration in those early days were much less complex than they are today. The physical plant was much smaller, and the budget only a fraction of what it is today. Gradually, however, the need for professional assistance became recognized, and a third estate was established. This third educational estate, with the tremendous growth in student numbers, has taken on enoi-mous proportions. Hanley, 27, is a native of Indianapolis, where he attended Cathedral High School, and was graduated with high honors in 1949. Early in 1951, he began four years of duty with the Navy, in which he served 21 months aboard the Ind., — Iowa which saw six months of duty in Korean waters and nearly two years of shore duty at the Naval Communications Facility at Port Lyautey, French Morocco. In addition to Cardinal O'Hara, who received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters, the honorary degree of Doctor of Law was presented to John J. Hearne, Ireland's Ambassador to the United States. The Rev. Thurston N. Davis, S.J., editor-in-chief of A-mericct magazine, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters and delivered the commencement address. Cardinal O'Hara, recently appointed a Prince of the Church by His Holiness Pope John XXIII, studied at the Jesuit College, in Montevideo, Uruguay, before receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Notre Dame, and completing post-graduate work at the Catholic University, Washington, D. C, and Holy Cross College. He taught at Notre Dame until 1933, when he was appointed vicepresident of the University and in the following year became the twelfth president of the University. From 1939 to 1945, Cardinal O'Hara was auxiliary bishop of the Army and Navy diocese, and was bishop of Buffalo, N. Y., until appointment as Archbishop of Philadelphia in 1951. The Cardinal instituted his the movement for the exchange of stu- dents with South American Universities, and promoted the daily reception of Communion by college men. Ambassador Hearne is a graduate of National University and was the Irish delegate to the League of Nations in 1926, and served as legal advisor to Ireland's Department of External Affairs, Dublin, in 1927. He has been the Irish Ambassador to the United States Ireland's since 1950. Father Davis, a native Philadelphian, was graduated from Georgetown University in 1937, and earned both his master's degree and doctoral degree from Harvard University in 1946 and 1947, respectively. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1931 and was ordained in 1942. After serving as instructor in preSocratic and Platonic philosophy at Fordham University's graduate school of arts and sciences, he became a contributing editor of America in 1953. Hanley's extracurricular activities, while majoring in English-Education, included: treasurer of the Italian Club; staff membership on the Collegian; secretary of the Education Society; co-editor of the 1959 Explorer, and vice-president of La Salle's chapter of Lambda Iota Tau, the national literature honor society. He was graduated with Maxima Cum Laude honors, after maintaining a Dean's List standing throughout his undergraduate studies, and now plans graduate studies in English in Temple University's evening curriculum. Veen, who received the Bachelor of Arts degree in History, won the acclaim of the La Salle faculty and student body for his spirited leadership of the recent campaign for the carillon system now Olney Avenue tower. Soon after, however, he established the Western Flour Company of Pennsylvania and of Trenton, New Jersey, to which over 35 years of his life were devoted. He was executive vice-president of the Grand Opera Company, a Philadelphia member of the American Legion, the Variety Club of Philadelphia, the Penn A.C., and the City Businessman's Club. Construction of the new high school on the 76-acre site, formerly the "Belcroft" estate of Clarence E.
