In 2005, Mr. Picard shared his perception of the attitude of a passionate producer: “The quick eye of a passionate producer makes all the difference when he or she is checking the barn, detecting cows in heat, preparing the rations, etc. The look of passion may appear to be one of concern, but what it really conveys is a willingness to make things happen while taking pleasure in what it takes to get there.” AGO YEARS FIVE Today Mr. Picard still takes great pleasure in his work. When he wrote these words 5 years ago, he had just been nominated to the position of Regional Manager, Dairy Production and Marketing at Shur-Gain. Today, he still holds the same position and feels as passionate as ever. His goal for the coming years is to continue to help producers meet the challenges of maintaining profitability by offering them high performance programs and products. -GCP3KGTTG3KECTF Regional Manager, Dairy Production & Marketing In 2005, Mr. Leclerc gave his own description of the cooperative relationship uniting producers and their Shur-Gain advisors: “Passionate people have several attributes. They are intense and overflow with energy when it comes to fulfilling their mandates and delivering on their promises. They are focused on action and get involved with you in the pursuit of your objectives. In short, they make things happen.” FIVE YEARS AGO Today Mr. Leclerc is among those people who know how to make things happen. Five years ago, he held the position of General Manager at Shur-Gain Quebec. Now Vice President, Eastern Region (including Quebec and the Atlantic region), Mr. Leclerc continues to make sure that the offer that has distinguished Shur-Gain for some 75 years is constantly renewed. Shur-Gain gives producers access to the power of research. Thanks to the change-over to Nutreco, Shur-Gain has been able to multiply its research strength, enabling it to remain a leader in the market and constantly offer more to producers. -CESWGU/GENGTE$IT Vice President, Shur-Gain Eastern Region AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 • 3 A passion leading to FIVEYEARSAGO PROFITABLE DISCOVERIES FOR PRODUCERS. Do you remember John Metcalf, the internationally recognized British researcher? In 2005, we introduced you to John Metcalf and his passion for dairy nutrition research, the field he now manages for Shur-Gain. At that time, it had already been a few years since he had left his homeland with his family to pursue his great interest in science and ruminants on Canadian soil. Five years later, his passion is still as strong and has even intensified over time! DO YOU REMEMBER? Five years ago, CRT television screens were still widely used. In a very short time, high-definition screens (PLASMA, ACL and now LED) have replaced CRT screens! Likewise, your advisors can now “see” the needs of your cows better than ever! Since dynamic energy was discovered, we have a clearer vision of what goes on in the rumen of cows. Thanks to NEWTON, details such as the technical and economic value of additives can be calculated. For you, this means that the profitability of an additive can now be assessed before you give it to your cows. Newton is a powerful decision-making tool. Does your program take into account the return on investment of your additives? 2005 2010 4 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 DYNAMIC ENERGY the greatest discovery made by Shur-Gain IN THE LAST 30 YEARS Fueled by a deep will to increase our knowledge of rumen functions, Dr. Metcalf and his team first put all their energy into the development of Perfo-Lact, which at that time, was already the most sophisticated formulation software in the world. Their relentless efforts led to a discovery that revolutionized dairy production: dynamic energy. THE BIRTH OF NEWTON A powerful decision-making tool! The launching of this new dairy nutrition calculation model in 2007 completely changed the way of formulating rations for dairy cows. Thanks to the dynamic energy approach, Newton can optimize the energy intake from forages and additives as they go through the cow’s rumen. “This is a striking discovery in the history of Shur-Gain and we’re extremely proud of it,” declares John. “Even though the software is powerful, it is easy for our advisors to use. Today, Newton allows producers to realize greater profitability, encouraging many of our dairy nutrition advisors to use it on a daily basis.” “Newton is the only program that lets you formulate a ration at least cost while taking into account the amino acid and carbohydrate requirements of the cow, which are essential elements for milk production,” John adds. “What’s more, with the ‘rumen modifier’ module, we can assess the economic value of an additive. Newton is the only feed software that can do that, and it’s patented,” specifies John, delighted to see that Newton has brought so many positive results to Shur-Gain customers. Ruminant Research Centre, Boxmeer, Holland ARRIVAL OF NUTRECO: optimizing the power of Shur-Gain’s research Shur-Gain’s longstanding role as a leader in the field of research was one of the main reasons why John joined the Shur-Gain team. The arrival of Nutreco (2008), a major player in the animal nutrition industry worldwide, was a source of motivation for John who sees the change as an excellent opportunity to optimize the power of Shur-Gain’s research. As John puts it, “the arrival of Nutreco enabled us to multiply our potential in research and development. We now have access to a wealth of research data and to additional research farms from our colleagues around the world. Our access to these new resources is excellent news for dairy producers in Canada and Quebec and opens the door to a powerful animal nutrition knowledge base.” Dairy facilities, Shur-Gain Research Centre, Burford, Ontario IMPROVEMENTS PROPULSION: aimed at better care during transition, for more profitability Shur-Gain’s new transition program Numerous studies have been done to better understand the needs of cows during the dry and close-up periods. These have raised our knowledge to a higher level in terms of the following: • Nutritional surpluses and deficiencies in energy, protein, trace minerals, and vitamins • Dry matter intake • Interactions between different additives • Metabolic problems such as ketosis, displaced abomasum, metritis, etc. • Herd management issues including stocking density, bunk space, and size of stalls • Body condition • Etc. Utilizing the power of Newton, the newly launched Propulsion program is also based on Shur-Gain’s latest discoveries on the needs of cows during this important period of their milk production cycle. “With Propulsion, we can now take into account the bioavailability of the nutritional elements in a ration. This helps reduce the risks and costs tied to metabolic problems and the excessive use of nutritional elements. All this comes in a single feed program that’s easy to use for the producer. That’s why we say that the Propulsion program is Simply Efficient for producers,” concludes John Metcalf. John Metcalf’s passion never lets up No sooner has John supplied us with the latest information on the discoveries of his team, that he already can’t wait to get back to the research farm. Who knows, his newest project might just lead to the next brilliant discovery for Shur-Gain... THIS STORY IS DEFINITELY WORTH FOLLOWING UP ON! Shur-Gain Research Centre, Burford, Ontario AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 • 5 Behind every FIVEYEARSAGO analysis there are PASSIONATE professionals: Jana Pogacnik and her team Jana Pogacnik and her team know this well: to develop a good feed program, you need to have accurate analysis data on forage value. The challenge facing Jana and the members of her team is twofold: Ensure the accuracy of the lab’s analyses and innovate by developing new methods of analysis to better assess the value of the feed ingredients grown on-farm. These are key elements to ensure cow productivity. DO YOU REMEMBER? Five years ago, you had to bring along a whole pile of CDs to enjoy your favourite music. Today, a tiny object has the power and memory capacity to store your entire music collection! 2005 2010 6 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Analyzing your forages has become all the more powerful and precise! To date, NEWTON is the only ration formulation software using cutting-edge analyses to determine the nutritional value of feed ingredients produced at your farm with the highest possible precision. This includes potential digestibility (PD) and insoluble fiber (IS) analysis. With the power and precision of NEWTON, the use of feed produced on-farm can be optimized and the feeding of your cows can be customized to suit their needs. What a remarkable technological breakthrough! Are your rations formulated with a tool as powerful as Newton? The Shur-Gain laboratory: RECOGNIZED FOR ITS HIGH LEVEL OF EXPERTISE IN NORTH AMERICA Since we printed our first special edition entitled “Those with a Passion” in 2005, the Shur-Gain analysis laboratory in Saint-Hyacinthe has become Shur-Gain’s Centre of excellence in North America. What does this mean? It’s in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec that we perform the wet chemistry analyses used to develop the equations for infrared analysis equipment for North America. To enable you to understand the importance of this activity, you should know that infrared analysis requires equipment that uses a mathematical equation to determine the nutritional components of forages. The precision of the analysis depends on the quality of the equation. At Shur-Gain, we develop our own equations based on data from Quebec and other Canadian provinces. The lab has grown not only in size, but also in terms of recognition and excellence. This is obvious when the following facts are considered: • Today, the laboratory staff performs over 320,000 analyses per year on over 32,000 forage samples. • The laboratory has added new tests that it can perform within the scope of its ISO 17025 certification: chlortetracycline, molds and yeasts. • Milk and water analyses are conducted there for “THE CANADIAN QUALITY MILK” program. • The Shur-Gain team received an Honorable Mention from the American Oil Chemists’ Society for the quality of its oilseed flour analyses (2008 – 2009). In addition, the lab has won the title of Approved Chemist for its nutritional labeling and oilseed flour analyses every year since 2005. • Several large-scale businesses producing food for human consumption use the services of the Shur-Gain laboratory for their analyses. For example, it is Maple Leaf Foods’ preferred laboratory for nutritional labeling analysis. • New equipment has been acquired, including a liquid chromatograph for the analysis of vitamins and different types of medication. OUR ANALYSES TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE “TRUE FIBER” IN YOUR FORAGES Since forages represent 50% of a feed ration, it is imperative to know the quantity of “true fiber” that they contain. The amount of “true fiber” is the portion that is fermented in the rumen and subsequently meets most of the energy needs of the cow. To determine the amount of “true fiber” in your forages, Shur-Gain has introduced two new analyses over the last few years: potential digestibility and insoluble fiber. These analyses are unique to Shur-Gain and are one of the reasons why we can claim that the Newton program is the best in the market. HAVE YOU EVER ASKED YOURSELF WHAT MAKES THE QUALITY OF YOUR FEED PROGRAM? Answer: It’s the accuracy of the methods of analysis used for your forages. Wet chemistry and infrared: a combination of analyses ensuring maximum accuracy Since the entire value of your feed program depends on an accurate analysis of the quality of your forages, Shur-Gain makes sure that this data is never left up to chance. The Shur-Gain laboratory is the only lab today that uses wet chemistry analysis to calibrate its infrared analysis systems, based on data gathered in Quebec and other Canadian provinces. This is how Shur-Gain can guarantee its producers the greatest available accuracy. The passion of Jane Pogacnik and her team has enabled us to improve our methods of analysis over the last 5 years. DID YOU KNOW THAT...? Every 20 analyses, a sample is taken to test the accuracy of your forage analyses. This great importance attached to quality control is a key element behind the success of the Shur-Gain laboratory. AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 • 7 Daniel Fournier and FIVEYEARSAGO Andrée Bourgeois: passionate people who ensure that Shur-Gain’s Two discoveries are brought to your farm Andrée and Daniel are in charge of technological transfer. They are in touch with researchers every day to put Shur-Gain’s research and development innovations in front of your cows. They also train the Shur-Gain feed mill dairy nutrition advisors who visit your farm and have you benefit from the latest advancements. DO YOU REMEMBER? In the last five years, technology has literally revolutionized the cellular telephone! From a device that could only be used to send and receive calls, the cell phone has become an impressive piece of technology offering an infinite range of functions. The same has happened to the formulation of your rations! In only five years, Shur-Gain has fine-tuned its Perfo-Lact formulation software to include even more parameters and improve the precision of your rations. Now known as NEWTON, this powerful formulation tool is the only software capable of formulating rations at least cost, taking into account the value of your forages, the benefits of rumen modifiers, and the amino acid, energy and carbohydrate requirements of your cows. Can your software do better? 2005 2010 8 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Technological Transfer: WHAT’S BEEN NEW FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS? THE ARRIVAL OF NEWTON a powerful, profitable tool SHUR-GAIN’S RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Shur-Gain’s greatest discovery of the last 30 years Since Shur-Gain launched Newton in 2007, producers have benefited from substantial savings through the optimization of their feed programs. Newton takes into account the effects of rumen modifiers, the value of your forages, and potential digestibility (the quantity of forage digested in the rumen). This is how you get rations that give the cow just the amount of energy she needs, with no waste. The starting point is the producer To some, it might appear as if Shur-Gain’s innovations are initiated at the Shur-Gain research farm and then brought to producers. Actually, the opposite is true. Everything starts out with producers and the challenges they meet on their farm. (See page 10). The dairy nutrition advisors pass on the comments they hear from producers to the people at Shur-Gain’s Technical Services and subsequent studies are undertaken at the research farm in Burford, Ontario. Then any newly developed knowledge is retransmitted to producers in the form of concrete solutions. YOUR SHUR-GAIN ADVISORS: thoughtful, resourceful, and always on the lookout for the latest innovations The DNA training program for dairy nutrition advisors Innovation won’t do much good if it isn’t explained, understood, and mastered. This is why continuous training is a key element at Shur-Gain. Based on the study of actual cases, the DNA training program adds to the on-farm expertise of dairy nutrition advisors. The aim of this study program is to develop and strengthen the following competencies: - BIOLOGY AND NUTRITION Know the Shur-Gain model thoroughly, understand nutrition concepts, and know how to use the Shur-Gain softwares. - OBSERVATION, ON-FARM VISITS Develop the capacity of the advisor to observe what is going on at the producer’s facilities in order to prepare an intervention plan and identify the priorities of the business in cooperation with the producer. - TECHNICO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS Know how to use and interpret the different farm technico-economic reports, draw technical and economic links, know and compare production standards. - DIAGNOSIS, RECOMMENDATIONS, AND INTERVENTION PLAN Make an appropriate diagnosis using knowledge of biology and nutrition, observation, and technico-economic analysis and use this information to prepare a coherent intervention plan that identifies opportunities for improvement as well as alternatives to reach the goals of the producer. These include updating the rail milking system, introducing herd management software, acquiring more up-to-date haying equipment, and purchasing a PMR forage mixer. As far as short-term projects are concerned, the owners plan on building a cold barn equipped with an automatic powder milk dispenser for the young calves. What did the Powells bring with them when they arrived? The special 2005 edition of Those with a Passion introduced you to Brian and Andrea, as well as Ian and Diane Powell, as the owners of the Wenallt Holsteins Farm. Twenty-eight years ago already, these four producers arrived in Canada from Wales, bringing with them their love of agriculture and their passion for dairy cattle. They bought a farm with 69 purebred cows and wanted to develop their herd over the years. Agriculture: an important profession that’s on the move The Powells have always found it motivating to be from a farming family and be involved in such an important profession. “Our satisfaction comes from knowing that we’re doing the best possible job,” they proudly assert. Already back in 2005, the Powells realized that the field of agriculture was evolving rapidly and that to succeed in the years ahead they needed to develop a number of skills. This is what they did in cooperation with Shur-Gain, applying new technologies and optimizing production. The evolution of the farm, 5 years later Andrea, Brian, Ian and Diane Powell 16 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Over the last 5 years, the 4 owners of the business known as Wenallt Holsteins made several improvements. They built a new shed to store their bales. As far as crops are concerned, yields have continued to increase. Some crops are now grown for seed or to take advantage of specific niche markets. Wenallt Holsteins has also won some prizes at shows. One of these was in 2007 when one of their cows was named Grand Champion in Stormont. Over the years, the Powells succeeded in significantly developing their herd. They now have families with cows that have been classified as VG and EX over 10 generations. They feel particularly proud of their cow CHRISSY, daughter of DUSK. Making cow comfort a priority There have been other major improvements in the last 5 years. In the barn, the cows now benefit from a raised head rail and new water bowls. The stalls are completely new and equipped with Pasture Mat cow mattresses. Rubber mats have also been installed in the walkways. In addition, the roof of the barn was redone and the lighting system was changed. For Brian, Andrea, Ian, and Diane, all these changes have paid off, as conformation and herd longevity have improved by 53% in cows with 3 lactation periods or more and milk production has gone up. Pooling together individual talents for better overall results! As they say so themselves, the Powells owe their success to the fact that each has their own area of responsibility, but all work together. For example, the 4 owners decided together that they would divide up the tasks among themselves. Ian and Diane became responsible for managing the dairy herd. Ian looks after TMR feeding, milking, and barn work. As for Diane, she specializes in genetics and is also involved with milking as well as feeding the calves and dry cows, in addition to being responsible for herd health and herd records. Brian looks after crops and equipment as well as crop marketing, and Andrea is in charge of administration and accounting. The Shur-Gain technology: a key ingredient The Powells are happy to have benefitted from the professional advice of their dairy nutrition advisor over the last few years as well as the technological progress made by Shur-Gain. Thanks to the Newton formulation software, which is exclusive to Shur-Gain, the rations given to the cows provide all the nutrients they need to maximize production efficiently. “Our satisfaction comes from knowing that we’re doing the best possible job” : Farm profile % of fat % of protein BCA Th ere 120 54 67.6 ) 11,664 kg (26,714 lbs % 4.1 3.3% 246-276-2544 eS iff a, Owners: Brian, Andre herd the in Number of head lk mi in Cows Kilos of quota Production average nce rm, Crysler, Ontario Wenallt Holsteins FaIan and Diane Powell h ur- G ain d in 5 years: Improvements tions • Major barn renova n ity and conformatio • Better herd longev t content rfa tte bu d an on ducti • Increased milk pro crops e som for he markets • Development of nic ion cat fi ssi • Improved herd cla en Agricentre inc. cEw Service center: Ma or: Richard Burton Dairy Nutrition Advis A contagious passion at the Powells’ Passion is what motives the Powell family on a daily basis! Richard Burton AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 • 17 ure Feat cle arti 'IVEYEARSAGO Gilles Landry Farm Inc. “Management focused on technology” After being trained in animal production science at the ITA and working for the Ministry of Agriculture for several years, Gilles decided to go into business with his father Joseph. Together they started the Gilles Landry Farm in 1971. After Joseph left in 1980, Gilles and his wife Suzanne decided to incorporate the business and founded Gilles Landry Farm Inc. Their son René, who also studied animal production science at the ITA, became a shareholder in 1999. The fact that both father and son had acquired a specialization in agriculture proved to be an undeniable advantage for the business. What objectives did they have 5 years ago? At that time, the owners of the farm wanted to improve the ventilation system to ensure the comfort of their animals, introduce TMR feeding and expand and modernize their machinery repair shed. Through all that, they also planned to continue the gradual transfer of responsibilities and assets from the older to the younger generation. The Gilles Landry Farm 5 years later The changes planned for in 2005 all took place. By 2009, the owners of the farm had acquired a 20*80 silo, installed an automated stationary TMR feeding system, put in a new rail milking system, improved the ventilation and lighting in the barn and increased milk production. In addition, the drinking bowls were changed and the neck chains on the cows were lengthened. Today the Gilles Landry Farm spans an area of 1,000 acres and grows corn, hay, barley, and wheat. The herd has grown from 190 head to 220 head. And the family is still growing, with Vanessa and René expecting a new baby in January 2011. As for Jean-Noël Lacroix, he’s still working on the farm after 29 years of loyal service. He still looks after milking and does other work related to the animals. What’s up next for the Landry Farm? “After all that, we would now like to acquire more quota and continue to increase our production,” the owners say. “We also plan on building a new shed for the maintenance of our machinery.” Five years ago, these passionate producers had told us that their farm would keep making progress and would be here to stay for a long time. Contrary to what is usually seen in farming communities, François Paiement and Nadine Lalande aren’t following a family tradition. Both passionate about animal breeding and agriculture, they acquired their farm in Saint-Benoît (now part of Mirabel), Quebec from a stranger in 1987. How’s that for a challenge? Mystique: a name that bears tribute to their determination Buying their farm was, to say the least, a bold investment! But right from the onset, François and Nadine were convinced they would never regret it. When we first met the couple 5 years ago, they had brought our attention to the name of the farm. In French, the word “mystique” is defined as “an absolute belief formed around an idea or a person”. The person, in this case, was François; and the idea was that of farming the land. Their objectives at the time François and Nadine had told us that their project of becoming producers was their first career choice. As the parents of four lovely children (Estelle and Élie Gratton, and Jacob and Maxence Paiement), they dreamed of building a home for their family. Once this was accomplished, they felt ready to seize any opportunity that would help them properly structure their business. François and Nadine and their children couldn’t be doing better! Estelle, now 18, is enrolled in a humanities program in college. Élie, 16 years old, is in his last year of high school and studying in the international studies program. He has a passion for soccer and has been playing in the AA category 12 months a year. Ten year old Maxence is now in fifth grade and plays Pee-Wee hockey. As for Jacob, 13, he is in Secondary II in the international studies program. He is also the director of the Basses-Laurentides Young Farmers’ Association and is also involved in karate and hip-hop. All four children help out a lot on the farm. Seizing new opportunities: François and Nadine did it! After building their house, they bought 30 hectares of land, which allowed them to expand the barn and build a covered manure pit. Their herd also increased in size and went from 160 head to 200 head. In 2005, there were 55 cows in milk on the farm; today there are 20 more! Thanks to Newton, the feeding software exclusively developed by Shur-Gain, the cows have everything they need to be productive. The rations are formulated at least cost with optimum use of feed ingredients. This helps François and Nadine properly manage their feed costs and prevent waste. More new acquisitions François and Nadine have also acquired high genetics animals that they will use to develop a market. There is also new blood in their team. In 2007, they hired Simon Primeau as a cowherd. “The business has grown without affecting our quality of life,” they say. Still as passionate as ever, they are happy to have solved that problem. Five years ago, they worried about not having enough time for themselves. Great cooperation with Shur-Gain François and Nadine say they are very satisfied with the advice they have been getting from Christian Gonthier, their new Dairy Nutrition Advisor at the Meuneries Mondou feed mill. Over the last 5 years, regular visits, follow-ups on the herd and the professionalism of their advisor have helped the Paiement-Lalonde couple reach their objectives. Still today, 5 years later, François and Nadine wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Shur-Gain’s services to other producers. Savouring the results What are their objectives for the future? To continue to do what they are doing as best as they can! This means working hard so their farm can prosper and always keep making improvements. We met them five years ago and published an article about them in the 2005 issue of Those with a Passion. After taking over the farm built by his great-grandfather, Francis felt privileged to be living in the country and working outdoors with the freedom to be his own boss. As for Linda, in addition to looking after the administrative side of the farm, she was focusing on her children and the human side of the farming lifestyle, a value that means a lot to the whole family. In the last five years, the name of the farm was changed from Francis Richard Farm to Papillon Des Prés Farm Inc. and underwent a number of changes. The children are already involved Time goes by so fast! The last time we saw Maude and Benjamin, they were only 5 and 10 years old. Now their parents are happy to see that they have done so well being raised in a farming environment. Armed with a bravery her parents very much admire, Maude competed with boys older than she is during her flag football season! Now almost 10, Maude is full of ambition and plans to be “the farm’s accountant” when she grows up. As for Benjamin, who is now 15, Richard and Linda describe him as “a boy full of projects”. You’ll never guess what he bought himself for his 14th birthday? A chainsaw! His next adventure will be to build a camp in the woods. Benjamin has great manual skills, which he puts to use on the farm by helping out with all the work in the fields: ploughing, sowing, cutting, etc. When spring comes around, he also taps a few maples around the house. They now produce more milk than they did 5 years ago, with production having increased from 9,026 kg (19,899 lbs) to 10,013 kg (22,075 lbs), and plan to purchase more quota this year. New projects are already in the works The owners of the Papillon Des Prés Farm plan to build a second silo, set up a new, larger space for the heifers and, of course, spend more time in the next few years enjoying life together as a family. Jokingly, they said to us: “We’ll be sure to have a few small conflicts in the process, but hope to avoid the big ones.” We have no doubt that they’ll succeed in doing just that! In the 2005 issue of Those with a Passion, we introduced our readers to Lisette and Gérard, the owners of Gérard and Lisette Carbonneau Farm Inc. in Stanstead, Quebec. Following a passion transmitted from one generation to the next, they had taken over the farm from Gérard’s father in 1971 and hoped the day would come when they too could perpetuate the tradition by transferring the business to their youngest son, who was 21 years old at the time. Five years later: mission accomplished! William, who is now 26, was always involved on the farm. As soon as he was old enough to do so, he helped his father plough the fields and was interested in everything related to the farm. Happy to have had such a great experience as a child, he hopes his own children will do the same. It was William’s passion for dairy production that prompted him to want to take over the business and purchase the farmhouse. He wanted to take on more responsibilities and take part in the important decisions to make the farm progress even further. William’s parents, who had always encouraged their son to acquire more farming skills and apply them to his daily work, were overjoyed. The entire family is happy for William Nathalie, the mother of Marika and Simon, Isabelle, whose children are Julien, Arnaud and Charles, as well as Philippe have gone on with their lives after being involved on their parents’ farm for a long time. Catherine and William 24 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Some improvements were made, with stability remaining in the forefront Over the years, the farm has continued to move forward without going through any major expansions, as Gérard wanted to keep the business growing at a moderate pace. The Carbonneaus nevertheless hired William’s spouse, Catherine, built a warehouse, made changes to the calf pens, adjusted the heifer stalls, acquired a new feeding robot and new milkers, changed the ventilation system, and fixed and updated their drainage system. In addition, the number of cows in milk went up. They used to have 35 and now have 40. The farm also purchased new quota, they went from 36 kg (79.37 lbs) to 41.8 kg (92.15 lbs). Gérard and Lisette couldn’t be happier As you may have guessed, what makes Gérard and Lisette so proud is the fact that the transfer to their son William went so smoothly. In seeing all the progress their farm has made and thinking about their family, they are delighted that their children have all found their way in life and that everyone gets along so well. Gérard and Lisette had this to say about the way they have been running their business: “Increasing our efficiency is a factor that enables the farm to make gains daily.” They are more than happy with the results they’ve been getting. David and Karine got their love of agriculture from their father, Jacques, who in turn got it from his father, who built the farm in the 1950s. Jacques, David and Karine got together in 1971 to acquire the Leduc et Frères Farm founded in 1975 by Jacques and two of his brothers. Balancing work and family: a challenge for the Leducs! David Leduc has always been fond of agriculture. “I’ve been involved on the farm ever since I can remember,” he recalls with a smile in his eyes. “As a kid, I was always right behind my father.” To further his knowledge, David studied at Alfred College at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Today, he looks after feeding the animals and the field work. He already has three young daughters and is looking forward to the birth of a new child in December. As for Karine, she works part-time on the farm, in addition to caring for her family. For both her and her brother David, balancing work and family is a challenge that isn’t always easy to meet, especially in the summer. One way to deal with the situation is to bring the children to the farm where they can play at working with their parents. The owners find this a great way to get their children interested in farm work without putting any pressure on them. The Leduc family 26 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Although he keeps an eye on the overall activities on the farm, Jacques is specifically in charge of herd management and accounting. Owners focused on productivity Five years ago... At the time, the Leducs wanted to make changes to the farm that would improve their productivity. Among other things, they planned to purchase more quota and increase their milk and butterfat production. What about today? They succeeded in doing just that! They went from 82 kg (181 lbs) of quota to 91 kg (201 lbs). Their average milk production also increased, going for 11,002 kg (24,255 lbs) to 11,368 kg (25,062 lbs). This boost in production and butterfat enabled them to sell more animals. In spring 2010, they reached a personal peak in terms of the quantity of fat per cow delivered daily. The Leducs attribute these improvements to the use of higher quality forage, to following up on all feed changes, to the strict feed management procedures adapted to their dry and close-up cows, and to the quality of Shur-Gain’s technology allowing for the right balance of nutrients at an optimum cost. Improved facilities Beyond their improvements to drive up productivity, the owners of the farm made other big changes. They increased the size of their bulk tank and improved the space for their animals to give them more comfort. In the next few years, they plan to automate their feeding system, continue to make progress in the area of cow comfort and improve animal production and genetics. The availability and competence of their advisor make a difference for the Leducs Luc Gravel, the Dairy Nutrition Advisor from the Gérard Maheu feed mill, is always available for Jacques, David and Karine. “Because of his efficiency, swiftness in dealing with problems, experience, and availability at any time of the day, Luc is someone we can always rely on,” the owners emphasize. How did they reach these goals? By working with perseverance, they succeeded in increasing milk production from 29.5 kg to 36.3 kg (65 lbs to 80 lbs). Their dairy nutrition advisor, Julie Caouette, also had something to do with their success. “Julie is a much appreciate member of our team. We like her positive attitude and professional advice.” The Depaties know that Julie works with state-of-the-art tools that are exclusive to Shur-Gain. With the NEWTON technology, their feed program is balanced in an optimum way to ensure that the rations supply their cows the right nutrients for maximum production with no waste. New equipment that makes a difference The owners of Maple Valley Farm also invested in new equipment. They bought a new tractor in 2008 and a mower in 2009. As for this year, they made the acquisition of a chopper with a kernel processor. They’ve also been offering their cows a TMR since 2005. “The fact that we now have new, more efficient equipment improves our productivity and lets us have a better quality of life, declares Simon, obviously happy with his purchases. Cow comfort: a priority The Depaties have also succeeded in significantly improving cow comfort by building a new barn in 2005. These comfortable, up-to-date facilities help keep their herd in good health. “We are extremely proud of our achievements,” adds Simon. And the story doesn’t end here! The Depaties are people with foresight who have a number of other projects in mind for the future. “The fact that we now have new, more efficient equipment improves our productivity and lets us have a better quality of life.” : Farm profile % of fat Protein % of protein - Total - True Protein Th ere 205 102 ) 10,136 kg (20,272 lbs % 3.7 3.2% 3.0% eS iff kie Owners : Simon et Jac herd Number of head in the Cows in milk Production average nce anton, Vermont Maple Valley Farm, SwDepatie h ur- G ain d in 5 years: Improvements in the business t of their son James • Gradual involvemen cow facilities w ne • Construction of m equipment far w ne of ase rch • Pu 80 lbs) • Use of a TMR to 36.3 kg (65 lbs to duction from 29.5 kg • Increase in milk pro erie Robitaille inc. Rheault Farm “An increase in productivity that exceeds expectations” Two brothers, two business partners Just like many good stories, that of the R.L. Rheault Farm starts off with a deep-rooted passion for the land. This love for agriculture got passed on through the years and today, four generations later, Pascal and Miguel Rheault are alight with excitement when they speak about the farm they have recently purchased. After 10 years of operating the business with their parents, Réal and Louise, the two brothers fully acquired the farm in January 2010. However, their parents remain available to give them a hand whenever needed, a help that Pascal and Miguel greatly appreciate. Five years ago, the owners of the farm wanted to make a lot of improvements in terms of productivity, labour, and operations. Today, they are very proud to tell us how things have developed since that time. Balancing work and personal life: it’s possible! Although they devote a lot of time to their business, Pascal and Miguel know how to enjoy life, as they are extremely fond of sports! This goes to show that it’s quite possible to balance work as a producer and personal activities and interests. Pascal, who is 27 years old, takes part in a number of sports. He loves snowboarding and playing hockey and golf. After a day spent looking after the cows and the fields, he likes to go out with friends and really appreciates such opportunities to relax and enjoy himself. The owners, Pascal and Miguel, with their father Réal 30 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 As for 30-year-old Miguel, he likes bicycle riding and downhill skiing, as well as playing golf. He now has a son named Samuel and enjoys spending time with his family. His spouse Caroline works as an accountant in Victoriaville. He is also very involved as an administrator on the Board of the Syndicat de la relève Centre-du-Québec. In addition, he looks after administration on the farm when he’s not busy in the fields, feeding the animals, or managing operations with his brother. Changes beyond their expectations Pascal and Miguel are happily surprised to see the extent of the improvements made on the farm. The productivity and efficiency of the business have considerably increased and they now produce 2,000 kg (4,406 lbs) more milk per cow annually. What’s more, they have even started doing embryo transplants. With the same manpower, 1 part-time employee, they can now produce 55 kg (121.25 lbs) of additional quota, having gone from 100 kg (220.5 lbs) five years ago to 155 kg (342 lbs) today. Always striving to make more positive improvements, they would like to continue to develop their genetics and productivity and are aiming for an average production of 11,000 kg (25,251 lbs) of milk per cow. A successful transfer To everyone’s satisfaction and with the precious help and support of the advisors from the MAPAQ, the farm transfer from father to sons took place in the best possible way: in harmony! Pascal and Miguel’s parents are very happy with their two sons’ accomplishment. Improving animal comfort Improving feeding and animal comfort can only impact positively on herd development. Pascal and Miguel are using Shur-Gain’s Newton technology to obtain positive results. This way, their cows have all the nutrients they need in their feed to be productive and remain in good health. The owners have also noticed that cows kept in free stalls developed better resistance to diseases. Now these are great improvements! With their advisor, they form a winning team! Well guided by the advice given to them by their Dairy Nutrition Advisor, Christian Denis, the Rheault brothers really appreciate his honesty, professionalism, and speedy response. This is what they had to say about him: “Christian Denis works hard to meet our needs. He regularly enquires about how we do things on the farm so he’ll be able to answer our questions as adequately as he can. We really appreciate his excellent service and the fact that he always strives to do the best possible job.” “Pascal and Miguel’s parents are very happy with their two sons’ accomplishment.” : Farm profile Th ere 260 126 155 25 VG, 74 GP, 44 G ) 10,536 kg (23,228 lbs 7 -22 29 230-2 eS iff Mic Owners: Pascal and herd the in d hea of Number Cows in milk Kilos of quota Herd classification on Average milk producti nce ec ., Saint-Albert, Queb R.L. Anyone who looks at the Fortin family will be tempted to say “yes”. Noël and Lucille Fortin, who founded the farm in 1958, had 8 children and 7 of them made working on the land their passion. In 1979, their sons Jean-Pierre and Sylvain decided to become partners in the business and, after several years of working with their parents, became the owners of the Noël Fortin & Sons Farm. Five years ago, these producers were convinced that they could improve the efficiency of their farm through adequate management practices and state-of-the-art equipment. Today, they are the living proof of that! At the Fortins, everyone pitches in Even if he has officially retired, Noël still takes pleasure in working on the farm and loves to be there at haying time. His expertise in the field is a great help to his sons, who wouldn’t want to do without him! Jean-Pierre is a very busy man when he’s not with the cows. If he isn’t cross-country skiing, flying a plane or bicycling, he finds the time to travel with his wife Estelle. Sylvain, who’s in charge of the pig farm, enjoys the thrills of motorcycle riding and also likes to travel. While the two brothers work on the farm, the other members of the family also keep busy. Jean-Pierre’s wife, Estelle, is the farm’s bookkeeper and helps out in the fields whenever needed. Their 23-year old son, Jérôme, obtained his vocational diploma in milk production two years ago and would like to take over the farm in due time. As for Sylvain son, Sébastien, who is also 23 years of age, he has a diploma in swine production and spends a lot of time looking after the machinery. Jérôme and Jean-Pierre Fortin. Productivity goes hand in hand with profitability The Noël Fortin & Sons Farm has come a long way in the last five years. The average milk production went from 9,998 kg (22,042 lbs) to 10,953 kg (24,147 lbs), butterfat increased from 3.94% to 4.07% and protein went from 3.20% to 3.36%. 32 • AT A GLANCE FALL 2010 Planning: the key to success The Fortins adapted their equipment in order to meet the standards of the Canadian Quality Milk program. Jean-Pierre told us about the farm’s approach to investing: “Our priority is to maintain the financial stability of the business. This is why we assess our needs before making a new acquisition. The secret of our profitability lies in good planning and having the right equipment.” Significant improvements without overdoing it Jean-Pierre and Sylvain have made great improvements in terms of components and genetics and have obtained excellent animal production results. The heifer barn has also been turned into free stall facilities. For the next few years, their objectives are to increase the involvement of the younger members of the family who will one day be taking over the business and maintain the same level of productivity. Another source of satisfaction comes from the fact that the Fortins have kept the same employees for many years. Jean-Pierre stresses the excellent work done by his two right hands, Marc and Eric, who have respectively worked on the farm for 19 and 6 years. “We couldn’t do without our Shur-Gain advisor” The Fortin brothers are happy to have Jocelyn Roy by their side. They appreciate the realistic and practical side of Jocelyn, his open attitude toward the future and needs of their business and the quality of his advice. “We would certainly encourage all producers to develop the same level of complicity with their feed advisor,” they concluded. “The secret of our profitability lies in good planning and having the right equipment.” : Farm profile Th ere 123 101 133.1 P 7 VG, 53 GP, 58 G, 6 ) 10,953 kg (24,147 lbs 4.07% 3.36% 410 ha eS iff Owners: Jean-P herd Number of head in the lk Cows in mi Kilos of quota Herd classification on Average milk producti t rfa tte bu e rag Ave Average protein Size of farm nce Beauce, Quebec ., Saint-Bernard-deInc rm Fa ns So & n Noël Forti tin ierre and Sylvain For h ur- G ain d in 5 years: Improvements ota • 13.1 kg of extra qu d • 40 ha of added lan 5 lbs) rease of 955 kg (2,10 • Milk production inc t ten con t rfa tte bu average • 0.13% increase in n content tei pro e rag ave in • 0.16% increase • New equipment . or: Jocelyn Roy, T.P Dairy Nutrition Advis A passion that gives results “I find it very fulfilling to work with Jean-Pierre and Sylvain.
