Big hair
and big
hearts
GEELONG had the
purrfect start to season
2014 this week. The Cats’
buzz is back in town.
Meow!
INSPIRED by the mayor’s
trademark hairdo, Mt Duneed
Regional Primary School
students and staff have been
creative with their locks — for
charity.
Grade 5 teacher Sonja Ballard
embraced the school’s funky hair
day by sporting a sky-high
mohawk, rivalling that of Mayor
Darryn Lyons, last week.
Students Aston Smith and
Luca McElhinney (left) also
jumped on the mohawk
bandwagon. The big-hearted
school, which has 196 pupils,
raised $5338.55 for the Leukaemia
Foundation, exceeding its modest
target of $500.
Young Tyler Pekin, his
grandpa Robert and aunty Maree
all took up the challenge to shave
their heads, as the family has
been touched by cancer.
Fellow students Tom Burchell
and Jaxon Mohr (inset, with
Tyler) lopped their locks as well.
Money was raised through
donations, sponsorship, a raffle,
cake stall and sausage sizzle.

IT took some time to get
used to, but Morning
Show host Larry Emdur’s
new hairstyle, or lack
thereof, is tops. A win for
viewers and charity.
DANIEL Ricciardo’s
Melbourne Grand Prix
disqualification. Have we
ever been so excited
about second place? Give
the bloke a break.
THE Rolling Stones
cancelling their Australian
tour after the death of
Mick Jagger’s partner
L’Wren Scott. Word is
they will reschedule for
October and November.

Denis a hit
with style icons
FASHION guru Denis Todorovic
caught up with “some of fashion’s
most influential players” during his
time at Paris Fashion Week. The
Geelong export, who documented
his adventures online, mingled with
top designers Kym Ellery, Toni
Maticevski and Vika Gazinskaya,
as well as Lucky magazine editor-inchief Eva Chen “to name a few”.
One of his favourite projects was
compiling a video of fashion icons
talking about their style
inspirations. Ellery named David
Bowie as her inspiration.

PM toasts water initiative
Bronzed Jess
feels heat
PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has
given Geelong’s bottled water brand
his tick of approval. Mayor Darryn
Lyons was in the nation’s capital
spruiking the Geelong Regional Alliance
(G21). Lyons introduced the PM to
Unite Geelong Water, and if the photos
are anything to go by, the thirstquencher was a hit. The Cotton On
Foundation initiative puts 100 per cent
of proceeds from the bottled water
sales into infrastructure, education,
health and sustainability projects.
Lyons tweeted a happy snap of the
pair, saying Abbott “loved” the Unite
Geelong Water.
HIGHTON athlete Jessica
Gallagher had a quick wardrobe
change this week when arriving
home from the Winter
Paralympics in Russia. The
alpine skier, who won bronze in
the vision-impaired giant slalom,
was pleasantly surprised by
Victoria’s warm autumnal
weather. The fair 28-year-old
was more than happy to swap
her thermals for typical Aussie
get-up. “Straight into T-shirt,
shorts and thongs for this snow
bunny,” she tweeted. “Now to
avoid getting sunburnt ...”
