Regular Activities:
Sessions and workshops are held at various venues and are listed in the Club’s newsletter
as they become known. The ‘Bluey’ is the Club’s newsletter, posted (or emailed) to members
monthly. It contains reports, upcoming events and details of special activities throughout
the year. Festivals and Live Concerts in the Geelong region are also sponsored by the Club
annually.
The ‘Turramurra’ Music Camp is held annually in January at Wildwood Retreat in the Otways,
providing instrument, song and dance workshops along with a children’s program and
concert. See website for details as places are booked quickly by November the year prior.

Supporting Roots Musicians
2:30 - 5pm Saturday’s Beav's Bar Little Malop Street Geelong
Dates: 25 July; 29 August; 26 September;
24 October - Cost $15 per session
These will be interactive performance workshops and participants will be
encouraged
to perform and provide constructive feedback to other participants.
The general format will be:
1/2hr - 3/4 hour discussion or participation exercise on a specific performance
aspect
1ish hour for 2- 3 individual performances after each will be a feedback and
discussion session – solos, duos and bands welcome
Wind up discussion and planning for future session topics and performances.
Topics specifically covered as the series progresses will be
Preparation - planning sets, remembering lyrics, tying sets together
Presentation - adding light and shade to individual items with arrangements
Microphone techniques and understanding PA systems and sound people
Harmony arrangement
Capturing your audience
Dealing with hecklers
Overcoming nerves

REVIEW OF OPEN MIC AT BEAV’S BAR ON AUGUST THIRD 2015.
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”. On waking I realized I was not at Manderley and not even on
the road there. However, on August the Third I was at Beav’s Bar for the Open Mic. And a dream lineup of
talent!
Chloe Miller made a welcome return to begin the night with a mix of originals and covers. She started with an
original, “Hey Darling” and then a cover of “La, La, La, Naughty Boy”. Missy Higgins’ “Ten Days” was next and
then another cover: “Oh, My My”. She ended her set with a new original song: “Anchor”. Good to see her back
and we hope to see and hear her again soon.
“The Greek Connection” was next with Marie Goldsworthy, John Hughson and Ilia Maniatakis on Accordian,
Guitar, Bouzouki and Vocals. They began with Vassilis Tsitanis’ “Ungrateful” and then two by Manolis Hiotis:
“Sunsets” and “I Want You To Call Me On The Telephone”. “She Has A Carnation In Her Hair” was followed by
Mikos Theodorakis’ “Song For Those Far Away From Home”. “Birthday” was next and they finished with “But I
Am Greek”. (Note that these titles are free translations of the songs’ Greek names and include subject-matter).
All were done with verve and that sense of the underlying love of life which is inherent in all Greek music, even
when the songs are sad. The hard thing was to sit still and write and not get up and dance!
As two of the acts programmed for tonight could not attend, members of the Committee had to take their
place. Claudia Collins was first into the breech with a great selection of songs. She began with “You Look So
Much Better When I’m Drunk”. (This took me back to many a party of long ago when alcohol made up for visual
deficiencies. Unfortunately, the boot is now on the other foot and one hopes that the object of one’s fading lust
has left their spectacles at home. But I digress). “Women Who Nag” led to a song about the Outdoor Dunny
which I think was called: “Flush My Troubles Away”. “I Must Love You ‘Cos I Havn’t Killed You” is a song that
speaks for itself and then came “Nothing’s Hanging Where It Used To Be”. Then, to warn anybody off
approaching her partner in an inappropriate manner, came that great Plantagenet song: “Keep Your Hands Off
My Dick”. Next came that tender ballad: “Thank You For Being A Bastard” and she finished with a song to which
all Guitarists can relate: “Key Of E”. A selection of songs not only well-done but incredibly true!
Jack Gramski was another welcome return and he opened with “Cicada Blues”. “Sweet Baby Jane” was very well
done before he went into two numbers by Pete Seeger: “Precious Friend” and – the final one of his set – “If I
Had A Hammer”. Lots of good talk between the songs to introduce them and, with the last number, there was
an incredible amount of audience participation. I believe that he is making another C.D. but, in the meantime, I
can highly recommend his first one: “From Crickets To Claps”.
To finish the evening – and to replace the other act that could not make it – Dwaine Chonka and myself filled in
with a few Jazz numbers. We began with “No Moon At All” and then came “Watch What Happens”, “Brother,
Can You Spare A Dime”, “Lulu’s Back In Town”, “April Showers” and we finished with “All Of Me”. I can’t write
for myself but Dwaine did his usual excellent Guitar work in both the accompaniment and the lead work. A lively
finish to the evening!
Once again, many thanks to Paula for organizing everything, Claudia for the financials (and her performance),
Rick for his work on sound and light and the management and staff of Beav’s Bar for the food, drink and
ambience.
