The spring has arrived – and with it the spring rain. At Beav’s Bar though it is always the music season and tonight was no exception. I was a little late arriving so did not get the individual names of the first band so know them only by their group name: “Platform 9 3/4”. They were a three-piece with keyboard and three vocals and began with “Caledonia”. Then came “Blowin’ In The Wind”, “School Days Over”, “Feels Like Home”, Foster’s “Hard Times” and they ended with “Bonny Portmore” – about a tree that was blown over in 1760. (A song that had won them an award on one occasion) The group was characterized by stunning lead vocal work, two and three-part harmonies and a keyboard which could sound at times like a mandolin and at others like a bagpipe. Let’s hope they return again soon! Isabella Khalife made a welcome return with Guitar, Vocals and a device which produces harmonies and other effects to round out a song. She opened with “Halo” which was sung with great feeling and then it was a pure vocal of “Wayfaring Stranger” to which she added – by way of electronics – harmonies, choral accompaniments and beatboxing effects. These happened in overlays and were most effective. Then it was back to Guitar for “One Step Closer” and the next “I’m Goin’ Crazy” (In This Big White Room Of Mine)at times had elements of Janis Joplin. She finished with “Black Horse And A Cherry Tree” which again featured harmonic loops, beats and also some nice Guitar work. A great group of well-done songs. Another return was Nick Randall who began with a recent song (about three years old) of Eric Burdon’s called “In Mercy’s Hand”. He spoke of performing it with other players not that long ago and was doing it solo for the first time. Then, as he described it, was a song containing elements of love, murder, betrayal and death. He had heard a version by Mick Jagger with the Chieftans but I associate it with Johnny Cash. It was “The Long Black Veil” which always sends a shiver down the spine. He invited the audience to join in with “Dirty Old Town” and they did. Then “I Will Wait, I Will Wait For You” before finishing with “After The Boys Of Summer Have Gone”. As well as being sung with feeling he told lots of good stories around the songs. Good to see him back! Johnathon Gardner – on Guitar, Vocals and also a harmonic and overlaying device – was another return performer. His first song was “Winter” which was warmer than the Spring weather outside. Then, using the beat backing, was “Skinny Love”. Then a song which went through many moods: “Give Me Love” – which had some instrumental interludes and great bass figures built up on the machine to accopany the vocals. He ended with the impressive “Say It To Me Now” which featured his powerful and intense delivery. An excellent finish to his set. The final act for the evening was Brad McRobb on Guitar and Vocals. He told of once being a fireman in Bendigo, looking for a Guitar teacher and finding him when putting out a fire at his house. The first song he learnt from him was the slow, James Taylor, version of Foster’s “Oh Susannah”. He accompanied this with some excellent Guitar work. Then came “That Lucky Old Sun” which is deserving of a revival. (My first recollection of it was, I am certain, by Frankie Laine). Then an original he had written for the Maldon Festival many years ago called “Martian Face”. (Inspired by a newspaper article of the time which claimed that a “face” could be seen on the surface of that planet!). A Guy Clarke song “The Cape” was one of daring to do what one thinks one can – with the “Superman” Cape used as the link in a person’s life. “Streets Of London” was done with feeling and was followed by “Diamantina Drover”. This was to be his final number but all there asked for an encore and he obliged with “The Day My Wife Met My Girlfriend” which told of the painful results of that encounter! A great ending to a great night! Once again, many thanks to Paula for organizing everything, Jill for stepping in at the last moment for the raffle, Rick for the sound and the management and staff of Beav’s for the food, drink and ambience. Not to mention all who performed and all who came to see them. Such a lineup of talent too! Don’t forget the next Open Mic at Beav’s on October Five. See you there! Until Then………………”Happy Listening”……………-Peter A.D. Fogarty. ********************************************************************************
