The School continues in good health both financially and in spirit. Our campuses are vibrant places of learning with generally excellent facilities. Where deficiencies exist work is either being done or plans are in place to address them. Prudent financial management is critical to the long-term success of the School. Over recent years we have upgraded core facilities such as boarding houses at Corio, units at Timbertop and classrooms on all campuses. In addition, the construction of the Handbury Centre for Wellbeing and the Glamorgan Centre at Toorak continue to provide wonderful facilities for students to enjoy. Geelong Grammar School continues to lead the world in Positive Education in schools. Interest from other schools and from governments remains high. We will continue to invest heavily in Positive Education through training, research and additional resources. I have no doubt that our investment so far has produced significant dividends in the form of staff quality and enthusiasm as well as curriculum content. Students are the main beneficiaries. ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL Exceptional Futures – The Campaign for Geelong Grammar School (our fundraising campaign) is now in full swing. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the move of the School from Geelong to Corio in 2014, the campaign provides a focus for the strong culture of philanthropy at the School. Four main projects are the core of the capital campaign: • The Centre for Creative Education, comprising three main spaces, including a forum which will seat up to 810, a studio which will seat up to 270, a foyer, classrooms and back of stage area • A fund to support the development of Positive Education • The Toorak Wellbeing Centre, which will mirror the facilities, albeit on a smaller scale, of those provided at Corio • Increasing the size of our Scholarship Fund to provide an opportunity for those who would not ordinarily be able to attend the School and also maintain diversity of the student base 7 ↓ SECTION 02 — SCHOOL COUNCIL At the time of writing there is still much uncertainty surrounding how government funding of education will be restructured, if at all. Even if there is a significant change to the architecture of government funding of non-government schools, I do not anticipate a material impact on GGS. I am grateful to my Council colleagues for all they do for the School. Paula Dwyer resigned from the School Council at the end of 2012 and I wish to thank her for her significant contribution. There will be a period of renewal over the next few years as some members of Council approach the end of their statutory limit of membership on the Council. I would also like to thank the volunteers whose significant contribution to the School adds strength and variety to so much of what we do. In particular, the Old Geelong Grammarians led by Peter Chomley (Ge’63) and the Foundation led by Bill Ranken (M’72), who together with the School Council work energetically and vibrantly to further advance the School. Together with all members of the Council I am confident that Geelong Grammar School is well positioned for the future. The broad and liberal education offered by the School through its unique programmes and high quality pastoral care position us as a leader in pretertiary education. Our financial strength underpins our capacity to maintain this position. If you have any questions on the accounts or this report please contact the School’s Commercial Director, Andrew Moore on, +61 3 5273 9255 or by email at [email protected] Jeremy Kirkwood (FB’79) Chairman of Council We are fortunate to have such dedicated staff at GGS. Our Principal, Stephen Meek, leads in an efficient, clear and caring manner. Together with Vice Principal, Charlie Scudamore, Commercial Director, Andrew Moore, and the Director of Community Relations, Tony Bretherton, I believe we have a superb management team who are surrounded by inspiring, energetic and engaged teaching and nonteaching staff. The School’s abridged accounts for 2012 follow this report and I am delighted to advise that the financial position remains sound. The overall surplus for 2012 was again adversely affected by the lower long-term Government Bond rates which impacted on the provision for Long Service Leave. Notwithstanding this increase in liabilities, the School has continued to reinvest in its infrastructure to ensure long term sustainability, thereby deciding in 2012 to maintain a high capital expenditure programme. 8 ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL SECTION 01 — SCHOOL COUNCIL ↓ SECTION 02 — SCHOOL COUNCIL COUNCIL FINANCIAL SUMMARY INCOME SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL POSITION AS AT 31ST DECEMBER 2012 Current Assets Cash at bank on deposit Net fees, charges and other income 91% Receivables - Fees (net of provision for doubtful debts) Govt grants 9% Other debtors and pre-payments BER funding 0.1% Inventories 2011 $000’s 2012 $000’s 1,383 665 313 277 2,046 2,138 625 638 4,367 3,718 Non Current Assets STUDENT ENROLMENTS Freehold land and buildings 131,819 136,810 8,050 7,863 139,869 144,673 144,236 148,391 Trade creditors 1,800 2,341 Plant, equipment and motor vehicles Total Assets DeductCurrent Liabilities Day students 40% Fees received in advance 6,258 5,756 Weekly boarders 2% Sundry other creditors and accrued liabilities 2,132 2,193 Full boarders 45% Borrowings 8,514 8,514 Overseas students 6% Deferred revenue 13,620 14,100 3,252 3,818 491 227 36,067 36,949 2,541 2,840 Retirement benefit obligations 562 199 Borrowings 813 300 Day boarders 7% Provisions for employee entitlements Retirement benefit obligation EXPENDITURE Non Current Liabilities Provisions for employee entitlements Other liabilities Staff and tuition expenses 63% Net operational expenses 30% 2,240 2,240 6,156 5,579 Total Liabilities 42,223 42,528 Net Assets 102,013 105,863 Depreciation and Amortisation 7% 10 ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL ↓ SECTION 02 — SCHOOL COUNCIL STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE FOR YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2012 2011 2012 Income $000’s $000’s Net fees, charges and other income 58,754 61,193 5,706 6,048 241 46 Staff and tuition expenses 39,019 39,782 Net operational expenses 17,765 19,149 Depreciation and amortisation 4,255 4,506 Result for year 3,662 3,850 5,137 5,137 (1,289) (229) (186) (1,058) Government grants BER funding Expenditure Represented by an allowance for: Capital projects (including BER funding) Abnormal expense due to prevailing market conditions Operating Surplus STATEMENT OF CASH FLOWS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2012 2011 2012 Cash flows from operating activities $000’s Fee income 61,616 61,831 Grant income 6,535 6,687 (62,696) (66,157) 67 81 5,357 6,103 10,879 8,545 (10,768) (8,884) 132 134 (10,636) (8,750) Payment to employees and suppliers Interest received Other amounts received Net cash inflow from operating activities $000’s Cash flows from investing activities Capital expenditure for property, plant and equipment Proceeds from sale of property, plant and equipment Net cash outflow from investing activities Cash flows from financing activities Net increase/(decrease) in borrowings 236 (513) Net cash inflow/(outflow) from financing activities 236 (513) Net increase/(decrease) in cash held 479 (718) 904 1,383 1,383 665 Cash at the beginning of the financial year Cash at the end of the financial year ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL 11 ↓ SECTION 02 — SCHOOL COUNCIL COUNCIL MEMBERS JEREMY KIRKWOOD (FB’79) PADDY HANDBURY (M’72) Chairman Deputy Chairman Mr Kirkwood is an Old Geelong Grammarian and a current parent. Total donations for scholarships, endowments, buildings and library funds were up 115% to $3.3 million. Donations to the scholarship and endowment trusts were up 304% to $1.8 million. Total assets in the scholarship and endowment trusts were up 22% to $24.3 million. This is community spirit in action, and this spirit is one of the best aspects of Geelong Grammar School. John Simson (Cu’73) is leading our campaign to increase the number of scholarships so more students can afford to attend the School and thereby be offered life-changing opportunities. A very big Scholarship Fund is one of our most important strategic aims. It will strengthen the School. Over time, we aim to raise $100 million for scholarships. We had record inflows into our scholarship and endowment funds in 2012 and I thank John and his Committee, including Deputy Chairman, Will Jones (Cu’73). As many of you know, we have launched our comprehensive fundraising campaign, Exceptional Futures – the Campaign for Geelong Grammar School. Current parent Amanda Burt is leading our campaign to build a new Wellbeing Centre at our Toorak Campus. This will be like the Handbury Centre for Wellbeing at our Corio Campus, although not quite so big. It will become a symbol of our commitment to wellbeing at Toorak. I thank our generous donors, Amanda and her Committee, and Garry Pierson, Head of Toorak Campus. Ian Darling (P’79) is leading our campaign to build a magnificent new Centre for Creative Education. It will replace the existing Bracebridge Wilson Theatre, which was built as a temporary structure in 1978 and no longer accommodates the whole school. I believe the new Centre will inspire future generations of students and teachers. It will help them develop life skills that are critical for success in the 21st Century and will provide an essential place where the whole school community can gather and thereby where community spirit will flourish. I wish to record my sincere thanks to Ian and all those contributing to this project. ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL 15 ↓ SECTION 03— FOUNDATION Paddy Handbury (M’72), my predecessor as Chairman of your Foundation, is now heading up our campaign for Positive Education. We have some very exciting plans under development in this area, so that we can build on the School’s and the Foundation’s existing investment of over $20 million to support the wellbeing of our community. Alongside our campaign, we have several important projects and achievements to record, including the ongoing work of our bequest society, the Biddlecombe Society. Michael Collins Persse and Neil Robertson (FB’72) are re-energizing the Society with enthusiasm, supported by Ros Adams (Ritchie, Cl’76), Desiree Cohen (Horne, He’68), Fiona Ratcliffe (Archer, Je’77), David Endean and Hartley Mitchell. I believe that in the fullness of time, the work of this committee will prove to be the most important area of fundraising for the Foundation and the School. Donald Robertson is now leading the Annual Giving Committee, while Warwick Johnson (FB’77) now heads up our Investment Committee. Cathie VickersWillis is leading our new Past Parents’ Network, supported by Brigid Robertson (Gordon, Cl’77) and Sally Kincaid. We successfully raised more than $1.5 million for the new Indoor Equestrian Centre, which was named in honour of Major David William Robert Knox. I would like to thank all those who made this possible, especially Penny McBain, Jennifer Wraight, Marina Oman (Levy Je’76) and Andrew Moore. Charles Bright (P’61) and a team of OGGs also helped the School build a new home for Michael Collins Persse on Biddlecombe Avenue. We have enjoyed exceptional support from School Council through its Chairman, Jeremy Kirkwood (FB’79), from the President of the Old Geelong Grammarians, Peter Chomley (Ge’63), and his Committee, from our Principal, Stephen Meek, from our Vice Principal, Charlie Scudamore, from our Commercial Director, Andrew Moore, and from all the staff at GGS. I also wish to thank our Executive Director, Tony Bretherton, and his wonderful staff in Community Relations. They have done an excellent job of gearing up for the largest and most comprehensive fundraising campaign ever undertaken by the Foundation. 16 I also wish to record my appreciation for the enthusiasm and generosity of the Foundation Board and the members of the various Foundation Committees. The new Constitution required the Board to elect two Deputy Chairpersons, and I am very pleased that Brigid Robertson and John Sevior (P’79) were duly elected. Our purpose is to help advance the School. I believe this means that we want to help the School to achieve, over time: • the best educational resources • the best teachers and staff • the best scholarships • the strongest community • the resources to share programmes like Pos Ed with other schools in Australia and overseas The thing I like most about supporting the School is that it uses its exceptional resources to innovate. The best evidencebased ideas are sought out; ideas with potentially very large and enduring benefits for students and teachers. Timbertop and Pos Ed are two inspiring examples. The School then shares these innovations with other schools and teachers worldwide. In Pos Ed, we have trained 250 teachers and staff from other schools, with another 160 to be trained at Corio in 2013. When you support GGS I believe it is vital that you know we are not only striving to offer the best to our community, we are also sharing our best ideas and innovations with others. I am privileged to be the Chairman of your Foundation. We have inherited a great school. Our wonderful resources and community exist because of the generosity and commitment of earlier generations, because individuals believed in building a better future, in supporting transformational projects and in giving something back. We have benefitted from their generosity and their community spirit. It is my hope that now we all can make our own contribution to the future, in whatever measure is appropriate. Firstly, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their support, advice and guidance during the last year, with special thanks to Andrew Ramsay (Cu’69) as Vice President, Lachie Stevens (M’96) as Treasurer and Katie Rafferty (Spry, Ga’84) as Secretary, whose diligent work and enthusiasm keeps us and the Association running smoothly. Secondly, I would like to thank those OGG Committee members around Australia and the world who keep our community strong and vigorous. Their commitment and willingness to donate their time and effort is much appreciated. Our community is also well supported by a number of sub-committees who are working on key projects and functions. These include the OGG Finance and Investment, OGG History project, Careers Day and 2014 War Memorial Cloisters plaque sub-committees. Finally, our committee and community is very well supported by Tony Bretherton and the Community Relations team, the School’s Commercial Director, Andrew Moore, and staff; all led by our Principal, Stephen Meek, and the School Council, led by Jeremy Kirkwood (FB’79). We also work closely with the GGS Foundation led by Bill Ranken (M’72). ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL The last year has seen a number of projects move to completion or their final stages. These include the building of a GGS residence for Michael Collins Persse which will hold his collection of books, records and memorabilia relating to GGS and the OGGs. This project was initiated by a group of OGGs, supported by the OGG Association, the Council and GGS. The book, Old Geelong Grammarians: an Historical Portrait, which will reflect on the OGG Association and the role it has played in supporting and promoting the School and the OGG community during its 158-year history, is nearing publication. Jim Darby (A’74) has authored the book, supported by Katrina Lehman (Webb, Cl’93) as editor. This project has been led by Andrew Ramsay and now Peter McIntosh (M’69), supported by Margie Gillett (Cordner, Cl’71), David Henry (FB’69), Michael Collins Persse and the School’s Archivist, Melissa Campbell, together with many past committee members. The War Memorial Cloisters were originally donated by the OGGs and this year has seen them refreshed, with the OGG Association a key donor. We are also working with James ‘Bim’ Affleck (Cu’67) to resource a new memorial plaque to commemorate those OGGs who gave their lives in service post-World War II, as well as those who gave their lives in 31 ↓ SECTION 04— OLD GEELONG GRAMMARIANS earlier conflicts but were not recorded in the existing plaques. The Association sub-committees continue to support the School and provide opportunities for OGGs. Led by Pin Affleck (Cl’97), the Careers Day sub-committee continues to support the annual Year 10 Careers Discovery Day at Corio. The OGG Melbourne Business Lunch sub-committee, led by Nina Anderson (Thomas, Cl’93), and special events committees in the USA and London have provided social opportunities for OGGs. We are also assisting with the planning for the 2013 OGGAsia event in Singapore. Other projects have included support for the Hockey Support Group’s BBQ facility and a donation to the Geelong Grammar Foundation for the proposed Centre for Creative Education. Finally, the Association is working closely with Community Relations and a number of overseas branches to develop operational guidelines for new and existing branches. These will assist branch development and identify where and how the central committee can assist and work with remote branches. We also continue to explore the use of social media and other technology for member communication and meeting support. Working with the COGA committee, represented by Margie Gillett, and with the HOGA Committee, represented by Deidre Griffiths (He’68), continues to be rewarding and we much appreciate their support and efforts. HOGA are in the final stages of writing the history of The Hermitage and we look forward to its publication. Overall, it has been an exciting and rewarding year and we look forward to 2014 and the centennial of the establishment and move to Corio.
