MESSAGE from the Principal This inaugural issue of the alumni magazine in honor of our 50th anniversary offers a wonderful opportunity for generations of Falcons to share their memories of Divine Child. Over the last year, I have met with hundreds of Falcons around the country and am very pleased to know that Falcons are still "Fired Up" no matter how far their travels have taken them from Dearborn or even Michigan. This February, I traveled with the Symphonic Band to the Windy City for their performance at the Field Museum and then joined Falcon alums for an awesome reception at the Inn of Chicago. Many of these alums were my former students who shared pictures of their growing families. On April 4th, we registered a little over 200 students for the class of 2013. It was so nice seeing so many of you in the hall with our newest Falcons. The strength of this school is certainly measured by the number of former students who choose to send their children to DC, especially in this harsh economy. The gift of a Catholic education is a kind of inheritance, passed down from generation to generation. In my own family, it's the gift that Mike and I have given Rick and Megan. My alma mater has been close to my heart for over 40 years. I can still remember walking across the parking lot and registering for my first classes at the high school. Back then, I thought hard work would get me away from Dearborn and Divine Child. In fact, the opposite is true. The longer I am here the more I come to appreciate the sense of vocation that this school instills in its graduates. Opportunities to serve keep calling our alumni back to the school where their talents were nurtured and their dreams encouraged. It's probably the reason that we have a dozen alumni on staff today. I hope you will accept my invitation to reconnect with your alma mater and to become once again a vibrant part of the life we build together at 1001 N Silvery Lane. Please share your memories of Divine Child on our Facebook page and if you are attending mass at our parish on any given Sunday, take a stroll across the parking lot and rediscover the Falcon Spirit that lasts a lifetime. Sincerely, Peggy Knuth '72 MESSAGE from the Pastor Dear Alumni, Who you are today is the result of many different factors. Joyfully, the foundation of your lives, in being the special people that you are, was a gift received from Divine Child High School. Your spiritual formation, your academic achievement and your ability to engage with others in the world are the result of the gift of a wonderful, nurturing environment provided to you at Divine Child High School. Though we have fully embraced the new millennium, there are still fresh and exciting challenges presented to us. We see technology changing before our eyes. When we believe we have purchased the latest and greatest technological wonder, we realize we are obsolete! With a focus on our economy and ecology, we look to bright innovations to help sustain and support our earth--a generous gift given to us by God. When you look at your own life, please realize that the gift of life is precious and must be treated with great dignity and respect. With wonderful strides in scientific advancement, especially in the medical field, we need to be on the cutting edge with good moral and bio-ethical tools to help promote the sanctity of all life. Our lives are never static, yet the one thing that remains constant is the promise of God's ever-present love for us in His Son, Jesus Christ. At the core of who we are, in the depth of our souls, is the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit that compels us to move forward with confidence and trust, despite the confusion surrounding us. With this powerful gift within us, I feel assured that we can continue to make a difference in our own lives and in the world. Being alumni, you must realize that the formation you received at Divine Child High School has enabled you to be the “voices crying out in the wilderness,” allowing you to embrace our ever-evolving world. I pray that you will cherish this foundation of profound spirituality, academic excellence and the prowess of athleticism and the fine arts as you move through your lives. In the spirit of thanksgiving for all you have received, it is my prayer, as well, that you will support and help us to continue to provide the highest quality formation by being active alumni in sharing your time, talent and treasure. I continue to trust in the Lord, who has brought us 50 years of quality education and spiritual formation here at Divine Child, and I trust in you, that you will be part of the ongoing vitality and viability of Divine Child High School into the future. You cannot rely on others. You have been entrusted by God to take the leadership role. Why? Because in your past, someone else sacrificed in order to give you the precious gift of a Divine Child education. With this gift, you can now proudly stand and say, “I am an alumnus of Divine Child High School.” In gratitude and peace, Fr. Jim Bilot Pastor www.divinechildhighschool.org 3 W e all knew him in our own unique way, yet in a way unique to only him, we all knew him exactly the same. He was the face of the parish, the character behind what Divine Child stood for. He was the old man with the quick step, the raspy voice, the white hair and that unmistakable wry smile. If you stepped out of line, he was there to put you back in place. If you needed a shoulder to lean on or an ear to talk to, his door was always open. If you had a joke to tell, even if he was the punch line, he'd share a laugh, then follow it with a quick jab to the shoulder. He came to Divine Child in February of 1961, known then as Reverend Herman Kucyk, quickly appointed to Associate Pastor. In 1976 he became the face, voice and symbol of Dearborn's most revered parish, named Pastor of DC, designated as the No. 1 Falcon. By 1990 he was called Monsignor, but he was known for so much more. As pastor he would watch over, mentor and guide Divine Child. It was his home, his calling, his passion. He traveled the grade school as would a proud grandfather, looking over the generations to come with an unyielding gratification. He paced the high school, evaluating his students like a builder would a nearly com4 www.divinechildhighschool.org pleted house, so much work, time and effort already dedicated, but the finishing touches still to come. If you didn't think he cared about every last detail, just take a walk to the parking lot. An unbearable sun beating down, the cruelest of summer days, and there he was. A straw hat to shade his face, a cane to brace his step, stubbornly making sure every last inch of the refurbished parking lot was done correctly. If you thought money was tight, take a look at the state-of-the-art gymnasium, the tuition he battled to keep reasonable, the teachers who spent a lifetime working under his lead. A GREAT MAN, A GREAT LOSS There are a million ways to describe Fr. K, yet none of them does justice to who he was and what he meant to the parish that housed him. Whether he performed a baptism, celebrated a wedding, gave the sacrament of reconciliation or just shook your hand and asked how life was going, he did it with a genuine spirit few could match. He personified what Divine Child stood for, his faith never yielding, his dedication unwavering. He was, in every sense of the word, a true Catholic, one who loved his job, cherished his calling, and spread his faith. He inspired those who looked up to him, gained the respect of those who worked for him and probably loved the fear he put in those who didn't exactly know him. Sure, he could be rough around the edges, intimidating to talk to at times, but deep down, for those who knew him best; he embodied the Christ he loved. Born in Montreal, Wis. in 1926, before he was Fr. K, he was a member of the United States Navy and an employee of Ford Motor Company before entering Sacred Heart Seminary. Following his June 1, 1957 ordination, he served as an Associate Pastor at St. Isaac Jogues Parish in St. Clair Shores from 1957 to 1961; came to Divine Child until 1966, was assigned to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth for a year before heading to St. Michael Parish in Monroe (1966-67); and St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, in Redford Township (1967-71). His home was, and forever will be Divine Child, though. Whether it was pacing the sidelines of a football game, eating lunch with students during fifth hour or just checking up on his gardens on the campus grounds, he was the most recognizable and most respected DC man there ever was. For 83 years he served his faith. For the last 52, he did it from a pulpit where all could hear and all could embrace. At times his homilies may have drifted from course, but they always came straight from the heart. His services may have been quicker than most, but you left feeling inspired, as if that Sunday morning was hand-delivered from the God he loved. There is no doubt Divine Child has suffered a great loss. While Fr. K was less visible in his time since retiring, his presence was never in doubt. The keys to the parish were handed over, but that stubborn old boss, in one way or another, was still in charge. By Mike Moore www.mooretosay.com Laid to rest, his grave yields January 10, 1926 - May 15, 2009. But what should, and will forever stand out, is not the dates that define when his life began and ended, but that little dash that tells the story of everything he did and everyone he led. It's hard to imagine Divine Child without thinking of Fr. K, hard to envision the red, black and gray without picturing that smiling old man. But as the parish, school and community he helped shape will forever live on, so to, will the spirit he spent a lifetime establishing. THIRD ANNUAL GOLD STAR AWARDS LUNCHEON On January 29th, 2009 Divine Child High School hosted its third annual Gold Star Awards Luncheon. The Gold Star Awards Luncheon was established in order to honor teachers from the middle and elementary schools for their hard work and dedication to their students. We know that our elementary and middle school teachers have the crucial role of establishing a solid educational foundation, which sets the students up for success in later years, and this luncheon provided the opportunity to recognize their efforts. We asked the top freshmen students at DC to nominate an elementary or middle school teacher that most influenced their education. We then went through and selected the best and most convincing entries and invited the nominated teacher and the nominating student to attend the Gold Star Luncheon. Each nominating student presented a brief summary of why their teacher made a big impact on their lives. The Gold Star Awards luncheon was a huge success and it was a great way to show our appreciation for all of the work teachers do in order to prepare their students for Divine Child High School. Somehow, at 83, he was down to earth enough to relate to those his age, yet hip enough to still be cool to those generations younger, and he had the respect of everyone in between. It was a certain honor to talk to him, and if he knew who you were by name, your smile was impossible to hide. He loved the Blessed Mother, which, in a way, is fitting that he left this earth on the day his high school celebrated May Crowning. Over the past few years his health had deteriorated. He was a far cry from the man he once was. Once seemingly immortal, like the trees he so often cared for; you couldn't help but think he'd be around forever. But as the weeks and months passed, that quick step grew slower, that raspy voice suddenly sounded weaker immortal he was not. Yet now, as his life on Earth has come to an end, it's the beginning of something new we celebrate and rally around. His earthly sufferings have passed, his seat in God's kingdom now occupied. P J Seurnyck and his guest, Mrs. Nancy (Coury) Carapellotti '88 from Our Lady of Good Counsel 5 www.divinechildhighschool.org “It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life.” Senior Class Report The final countdown has come to an end, and looking back, the Senior Class of 2009 had quite an eventful year. The year began with the election of the Senior Class Student Council members: Katie Bowerson, Sarah Eaton, Katelyn Hamann, Stefano Pesce, Stephanie Santostasi, and Steve Webb. These Senior Class Officers designed the Senior shirts and sweatshirts which were worn throughout the year at various events. awarded gag gifts and certificates at the mock election assembly, hosted by the Senior Class Officers and Mr. Monea. Pictures were also taken for this year's yearbook. The highly adored and anticipated Mr. Falcon Contest took place on February 20. The five seniors who were nominated by the class of 2009 were Angelo Berlasi, Patrick Biondi, Stephen Claypool, Anthony Manno, and Eric Pachota. They attended rigorous dance practices to prepare for their big night and put a lot of time and effort into their skit and performances. The seniors dominated the entire night with a hilarious and comical skit: Celebrity Jeopardy, hosted by Alex Trebek. Anthony Manno was named Mr. Muscles Runner-Up, and Patrick Biondi was awarded the title of Mr. Muscles 2009. The entertaining night ended with the crowning of Anthony Manno as Mr. Falcon 2009. Overall, the class of 2009 had a senior year that they will remember and cherish forever. In early October, the traditional Homecoming festivities and Spirit Week began. The Homecoming Court was nominated, and the members were Katie Bowerson, Janel Furr, Rachel Iaquaniello, Corinne Loranger, Lauren Malinowski, Jane Miller, and Stephanie Santostasi. On Homecoming Saturday, the Varsity Football Team defeated the Ventures of Bishop Foley, and at halftime, Maggie Rybka was named 2008 Homecoming Queen. The class of 2009 exemplified the spirit of Homecoming Week, taking first place in the Spirit Games and first place in the float competition. Later that month, as a Halloween celebration, the seniors traveled to Wiard's Orchard for their Haunted House and Hayride. Also, throughout the autumn months, every senior attended a retreat at U of M Dearborn where they completed the challenging high ropes course and other activities. Although it was difficult to accomplish some of the tasks, the retreat was a great bonding experience for everyone. Divine Child is of course known for its outstanding athletics, but the class of 2009 has proven to be above and beyond outstanding. Throughout the year, many seniors were given the opportunity to sign with various colleges in football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball in front of friends, family, and classmates. Many of these students were also lucky enough to accept scholarships to these schools. Not only is Divine Child talented in sports, but its students also excel academically. The class of 2009 has received scholarships from colleges and universities all over the United States, ranging from $500 to full tuition. The annual Monsignor Weier and Kucyk Recital took place on February 8, where there were performances by Irish dancers, Polish dancers, musicians, vocalists, and ballerinas. The recital raised money for the Monsignor Weier and Kucyk scholarship fund. In February, the seniors nominated each other for over sixty various mock election awards. The first place winners were 6 www.divinechildhighschool.org Homecoming Court Junior Class Report The junior class has been busy this year on a number of fun projects including Homecoming, Ring Day, Senior Coffee House and Prom. Homecoming was a memorable and rewarding experience as the junior class worked together to build and decorate an African safari float for the Homecoming Parade. Their DC spirit came through and their float took second place! They also transformed the atrium into an exotic jungle as part of the “Road to El Dorado - The City of Gold.” With the assistance of Mr. Bush, the juniors put together a memorable Ring Day video containing pictures from their freshman through junior years. On Ring Day, the juniors finally received their class rings and had them blessed by Father Jim Bilot during a beautiful mass. In January, the junior class hosted the Senior Coffee House, creating a cozy winter ski lodge in the DCHS cafeteria. They had an amazing turnout of seniors enjoying each other's company, drinking hot cocoa, and listening to their fellow classmates showcase their talents. CLASS REPORTS Sophomores and Freshman Sophomore Class Report DC's Golden Jubilee has also been an exciting year for the Class of 2011! To kick off the year, the sophomores showed their school spirit during Homecoming Week, winning the tug-of-war at the pep rally and then taking fourth place in the float contest. Their float, in keeping with “Our Golden Globe” theme, was a tribute to the continent of Asia, complete with Chinese dragon and hand-crafted flowers. They also were able to attend their very first Homecoming dance, for which the school was beautifully decorated in the style of “El Dorado the City of Gold.” Soon after Homecoming, the sophomores participated in their very own match-making survey, called DataMatch. Although it was all in good fun, the sophomores still enjoyed finding out who were their best and worst matches not only in their grade, but in the entire school. In November, the sophomores spent a day at St. John's on retreat. They spent the time talking, listening, and learning more about themselves and about each other. They even made woven bracelets with beads asking the thought-provoking question, “What Would Jesus Do?” The sophomores also had the privilege of the weekly Thursday “Sopho-speakers.” These speakers came to talk about their careers, including the duties, demands, education, and salary that go along with each job. These speakers included Mr. Shannon Starr, a career counselor at Baker College; Chris Danowski, the director of Technology and Licensing at Ford Motor Company; Dr. Leo Hanifin, the Dean of Engineering at University of Detroit Mercy; and even local Olympic gold medalist Sheila Taormina. These speakers were very enlightening and presented the sophomores with valuable information and ideas about possible future careers. To start 2009, nearly one-third of the sophomores participated in the school Science Fair. The top four prizes were all awarded to sophomores, with Jonathan Szpytman winning the Grand Prize, Andrew Rauh taking First Place, Angeline Sawaya taking Second Place, and Katie Kus taking Third Place. A great deal of the sophomores won awards in individual categories, and a number of them went on to the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit at Cobo Hall. Great job guys! As is the annual tradition, the sophomores also got to plan the Sadie Hawkins' Dance. After decorating the cafeteria with cutout hearts and cupids of all shapes and sizes, the sophomores also wrote the names of each couple on hearts placed along the cafeteria windows. The sophomores' first Sadie's dance was a huge success! As the year wraps up, the class of 2011 hosted a breakfast for the graduating class of 2009 and began the preparations for next year's Prom. Freshman Class Report This year as a class, the Divine Child freshmen have participated in many school activities. At the beginning of the year, the freshmen attended the “FroshSlosh,” a dance where the class of 2012 could socialize and meet new people. Homecoming was also a very fun event. Not only did the freshmen vote on the Homecoming Queen, they also voted their own classmates as representatives at the Pep Rally “Spirit Games.” Also, freshmen designed a float for the Homecoming Parade and took third place overall. The December Dreaming raffle, an annual tradition, is an excellent way to raise money for the school and a chance to win some awesome prizes. Having sold the most tickets and raised the “Senior Coffee House Winter Ski Lodge” most money, the freshmen came in first place, earning a freshmen-only day off and a freshmen lock-in. On a more tranquil note, the juniors spent an entire day relaxing and bonding with each other, as well as strengthening their relationship with God at St. John's Retreat Center in Plymouth. In March, the juniors took a huge step toward beginning their college careers. They completed the ACT and MME exams, each of which lasted several hours and gave them opportunities to earn college scholarships. Finally, in April, all of the juniors' hard work culminated in the wonderful Junior-Senior Prom held at the Dearborn Inn. The beautiful black, red, and gold decorations of the Mystery Masquerade created an absolutely enchanted evening! Then came the freshman Student Council elections; there were twenty students running for the seven positions on StuCo. Ever since the elections, the freshman student council officers Jake Atnip, Kara Frank, Michael Gutierrez, Daniel Masserang, Ashley O'Connell, Catia Sabak, and Greg Yaros - have helped organize many school events, including winter & spring dances, and a lock-in. Finally, the freshman class voted on their class motto, flower, saint, and colors and created their class banner. This 50th graduating class of 2012 has so much to offer the DC community and is growing more and more each day. 7 www.divinechildhighschool.org This isn't your Mother's Counseling Department Remember the good ol' days when DC had only one or two counselors? Well, things have changed since then! There are four of us: Erin Harker, Sarah Hansinger, Diane Rivard, and Pam Romanelli. We are all different in age, size, shape, marital status, experience, and interests, but we are united in two very important areas: concern for our students and state endorsement to do our jobs. Our goal is traditional: to help students discover themselves, find options in careers, do the best they can academically, learn to make good choices, and develop coping skills. In short, we desire to help students with personal, academic, college, and career areas. Diane Rivard, Counselor In addition to having more counselors than in the old days, we also have a wonderful secretary, Mrs. Barb Rees ('68). We have plans for seeing all of our students as much as possible, and we have new technology to help our students reach their goals. College Readiness The DC English Department Ninety-five Anatomy and Physiology students this year made Divine Child High School is proud of its English department. Students would list one electronic resource and make multiple trips to the library to make photocopies. Our new and improved process leverages the power of subscription databases and makes research more convenient, authentic and community based. This initiative is the latest in a two year collaboration between the Science Department and the library. Together, both departments have hosted three Science Nights at the Library where peer room walls to offer students learning opportunities. This year, Mrs. Roberta Shortt's Shakespeare class enjoyed a performance of Hamlet at the Hilberry. The annual AP English trip to Stratford, Ontario, with Mrs. Sandra Taylor and Mrs. Kaye Campagnoli provided the AP seniors a full day of Shakespeare: a tour of the costume warehouse, a wonderful production of Hamlet, a talk-back with the actors, and a few hours to spend in the charming town of Stratford. coaches, community stakeholders, and science faculty helped over 100 The English department also promotes reading independently students refine their Science Fair research topics. The Divine Child High School Math Department would like to thank the Alumni Association for all of their technical support throughout our building. We continue to move our students forward and prepare them for their college classes. The new classroom set of graphing calculators allowed all of our students to gain the experience needed to become college ready. Thank you again for your continued support. 8 www.divinechildhighschool.org DEPARTMENTS Fine Arts and Social Studies Fine Arts Department The Fine Arts Department of Divine Child is continuing to provide the students of D.C. the most opportunity to use and show off their talents and to excel in their careers. We are proud of our history and are excited about our future. We have over 30 opportunities where students can show off their talents; musically, artistically, clothing, culinary and on the stage. Mr. Robert Bush is happy to announce the inclusion of a string program at Divine Child and is happy that all the instrumental ensembles are doing great. If you ever are in the area, try to make the Halloween concert - It's a howling good time! Along with the Halloween concert, the ensembles perform three additional concerts throughout the school year. Mrs. Mary Melonio '75 and the choirs are doing better than ever at school liturgies, concerts, holiday receptions and community events. This year, through collaboration with the Rosedale Park Players, Mrs. Karen Pritchard directed “Dead Man Walking,” a play by Tim Robbins. Through this play, and its topic of the death penalty, teachers in history, religion, law and acting classes used this play as a school-wide collaboration to stimulate discussion and educate our students about aspects of the death penalty. As you can see, the Fine Arts Department is proud to say we are the largest department in the school and are happy to continue to provide the students of D.C. all of these wonderful opportunities. We thank all of you for your support of our programs throughout the years and hope to see you at the next Fine Arts event! Mrs. Roberta Shortt took the school community to the tropical pacific islands of Rodgers & Hammersteins “South Pacific.” This musical brought together over 65 DC students, from actors, to crew, to the live pit orchestra. We were happy to perform for a sold out crowd to three of our four performances! Congratulations to Mrs. Shortt-director, Mrs. Mary Melonio-choral director, Mr. Robert Bush-orchestra director and Mr. Tom Shurtleff-crew director for these great performances. Social Studies Department The Social Studies Department has been fortunate to be able to take part in numerous opportunities outside of the classroom. Our association with the Detroit Economic Club has given many students the chance to meet, ask questions and have lunch with political and economic leaders from around the world. A wide variety of speakers have graced our classrooms this school year: A Libyan nationalist, Nuclear Power Proponents, Hybrid Vehicle Engineers, Medical Marijuana Ms. Lyn Last and Mr. Matt Zemba '94 have been working meticulously in room 102 with our students in our art studio, and our art classes. We have also incorporated digital photography and printmaking classes to keep up with the everchanging technology. We are also happy to share that Mr. P. Mike Foye, even though retired, is helping out with a few art classes as well as Art History. Mrs. Judy Altesleben, Ms. Kate Gedert, Mrs. Anne Marie Fiscelli, Mrs. Frances Budnick are keeping the students knowledge of cooking, sewing and costume design in the forefront for our culinary arts and sewing classes. We look forward to the wonderful smells and the beautiful clothing and designs from room 101! advocates, police chiefs, DEA and Secret Service Agents, Border Patrol Personnel, and Bank officers, just to list a few. All of these individuals have brought something from the real world into our courses and we heartily thank them for that. Our latest experience involved sitting in on court cases presided over by Judge Plawecki at the Dearborn Heights Court. 9 www.divinechildhighschool.org DEPARTMENTS Science Fair and Religion Since the 1960's, Divine Child High School students power of subscription databases and makes research more convenient, have been participating in both a school science fair authentic and community based. She will do research with faculty across departments of the medical school and Cambridge campuses. She wrote about her DCHS Science Fair experience in her graduate school applications: “ It's the summer after freshman year of high school and I'm hunched over in my garage, sweating in the Michigan heat and humidity with a dead bee on the end of a toothpick. In between cursing the plants and changing bee sticks, I transfer pollen from one type of mustard plant (yellow and hairy) to another type (purple and hairy) growing in empty pop bottles for my science fair project on genetics. I don't think this is how Mendel did it. Hours spent planting seeds, cross-pollinating phenotypes, refilling water, collecting pods, and analyzing data…Reading background materials about genetics had captured my interest in science. Knowing I could help people through people solidified it.” Andrew Rauh, a current sophomore, went to Reno, Nevada, in May for the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. He, too, spent a summer in his garage, but he figured out a way to extract a fuel from common substances such as grass clippings and banana peels. After our school fair, he arranged to collaborate with Dr. Marincean at the University of MichiganDearborn to gather more precise data. There, he Andrew Rauh learned how to use HPLC, high performance liquid chromatography, and proved that the fuel he produced was indeed ethanol. Andrew said, “Science Fair has been a great experience. It has allowed me to prepare for the future and learn about what I am able to do.” The Science Department would love to hear from past school and regional Science Fair winners. What are some of your memories or how did Science Fair help you with career selection? We do not have a complete list of the Grand Prizes winners. 10 If you could help us complete our list, please, contact the science department with the information. www.divinechildhighschool.org Religion Department The religion department at Divine Child High School began the year with a new look. Mrs. Hayes was added to our faculty to teach the freshmen and the sophomores. More importantly, she was named the Liturgy Coordinator for the high school. After discussion with our pastor, Fr. Bilot, we made an effort to encourage more participation at our liturgies. We have attempted to have a variety of individuals lead daily prayer. We have also added a weekly sending prayer at the end of the school day on Friday afternoons. Another new look has been the annual retreat. We have added a new retreat director, Mr. John Lupinacci. We enhanced the retreat program to encourage the growth of the spiritual student. As has been the tradition at Divine Child High School, we attempt to put our faith in action. We encourage our students to do at least ten hours of service in the community. The students' service raged from independently working at soup kitchens and hospitals to spearheading a drive to raise money for cancer research. Mrs. Sovine continues to volunteer her time to lead groups to work at soup kitchens in the community. The pro life group attended the annual March for life in Washington DC. The religion faculty understands the need to foster a Catholic environment and collaborates to teach Catholicism to the community. We continually pray for our alumni and benefactors. God Bless You. NCA REPORT By Deb Romanelli MICHIGAN NORTH CENTRAL ASSOCIATION COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION AND SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS VISITS DIVINE CHILD HIGH SCHOOL Once every five years is a long time between visitors, but this spring a team of five Michigan North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement delegates visited DCHS to conduct a QAR-a Quality Assurance Review. The newly defined requirements of our accrediting agency state that once during each five-year cycle, each accredited Michigan school or district will present proof positive that it meets or exceeds the high NCA standards for Quality Schools, including Continuous Improvement. March 24th and 25th showcased DCHS at its best while our delegates (including Fiona Hinds, Associate Director of Michigan NCA, TEACHER NEWS AND Henry Cade of the Michigan Department of Education, and 3 department chairpersons from Michigan high schools) spent long hours delving through documents; observing classrooms; and interviewing students, teachers, parents, alumni, and other community members; and finally pronouncing us “Accredited.” Fiona Hinds, the team leader, complimented Principal Peggy Knuth and the DC staff on its professionalism and dedication to our students. She cited favorable comments from all stakeholders and reinforced our dedication and conviction that DCHS is, indeed, “excellence in education.” EAGLE SCOUTS Mark and Karen Pritchard celebrated their 30th anniversary in Hawaii with DC Alumni Children, Alex and Mary in August. Mary S. Pritchard (DC class of 06) was just inducted into the College Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi on March 23, 2009 at GVSU. To be eligible, juniors must be in the top 5% of their class. Alex Pritchard (DC Class of 2000) was one of five employees to be selected to be on the Java development team for AAA Insurance World Headquarters, in February. Alex most recently returned to DC to play in the pit for South Pacific. The Altesleben Family has many connections to D.C.H.S. This photo was taken June 14, 2008 at Paul II's wedding to Amy Kent. Our fall and winter teams have taken home three Catholic League Championships, two District Championships and two Regional Championships. Many of these teams enjoyed success deep into the playoffs. We are also proud to recognize that many of our teams include children of Alumni. One other highlight this year has been the abundance of Athletic Scholarships that have been accepted and signed by graduating seniors. As of April 8, Divine Child has fourteen seniors who have officially accepted National Letters of Intent to participate in Collegiate Athletics. Those scholarships total several hundredthousand dollars toward higher education. We are pleased with the outcome of our fall and winter sports seasons and look forward to updating you on the pring season in the fall magazine. 'Return to Glory' 50th Season of Varsity Football Features Special Celebrations When Divine Child's football team takes the field this fall, it will mark the 50th varsity season for the storied Falcons' program - one which has posted 300 victories against 143 losses and a tie since 1960. To commemorate the milestone season and appropriately celebrate the past, school administrators, coaches, parents and alumni are planning a series of activities and celebrations. Included among the celebrations will be recognition of each of the schools five State Championship teams and coaches during halftime of four different home games. “This will be a very special year, and we plan on giving it very special treatment,” fourth-year Head Football Coach Jack Masserang said of the “Return to Glory” season. “There have been some great chapters in the Divine Child football history book, and we want to recognize those while writing a pretty important chapter ourselves with this year's team. Our goal for 2009 - in addition to making the playoffs - is reminding everyone what Divine Child football is all about.” The Falcons open the 2009 campaign on the road Aug. 28 at Croswell- The following week, the Falcons host General Amherst from Canada on Sept. 12 in another 7:30 p.m. game at Crestwood, where Coach Bob LaPointe and the 1975 State Championship team will be honored. 12 www.divinechildhighschool.org SPORTS Cheer and Hockey 2008-2009 Divine Child Hockey season in review. Overall the season was a great success. With fourteen seniors we were competitive in all contests against some of the top teams in the state. The teams schedule was tough as ever with games against Trenton, Grosse Pointe South, Wyandotte, SMCC, OLSM, just to name a few. Accomplishments included: Metro League East Division Champions, Mayor's Cup - Dearborn City Champs, Bishop's Cup Tournament Champions, Regional Champions (9th time in 10 years) Quarterfinalists, 17-10-1 (4th most victories in school history). Also, the Falcon Over-speed skill development camp takes place August 3-7 at U of M Dearborn Arena. All ages from Mites - High school will be taught important skills to be a successful hockey player at any level. That season runs from November until MidMarch This past year the varsity team had an amazing competitive season, achieving what few before them had done. The first time since 2004, the team advanced to State Finals finishing 6th out of the top eight teams in the state. They also were named All-Academic First Place in all of Division 2 (over 77 teams!) for having the highest cumulative GPA (over a 3.3). They couldn't have ended their season better. We are gearing up to start our new season this summer and hope to see you at events throughout the year. It is our goal as a program to continue the tradition of excellence in athletics and academics. Cheers! Amber Lopez - Class of '98 The 2008/09 season was both successful and memorable for the Varsity Girls Basketball team. We started strong in spite of our tough non-league schedule which prepared us to compete in the very challenging Catholic League Central Division. We were competitive in every game and worked hard to finish league play in second place behind undefeated Marian HS. We won a close game over Ladywood in the CHSL semifinals to earn a trip to the finals at Calihan Hall. With only eight teams still alive in Class B, we traveled to Brooklyn, Michigan on March 17th to play the quarter-final game against the #4 ranked DeWitt Panthers. The atmosphere in Brooklyn was both exciting and electrifying. The girls played their hearts out. Alas, the luck of the Irish was missing that day. Although they just missed a trip to the Final Four; the team finished the season with a 17-8 record and walked away with memories that most high school athletes never get to experience. Although a Marian win still eluded us, we quickly recovered and rebounded by beating Detroit Martin Luther King in the Operation Friendship game. We were playing our best basketball as we entered the state tournament where we won the district title for the second year in a row and advanced to regional play. We beat New Boston Huron in the first game, which set us up to avenge our loss from last year to Detroit Community in the regional final. Many were surprised as DC, seen as the clear underdog, beat undefeated, #1 state ranked Detroit Community to win the first Regional title for Divine Child since 2001. As always, for the high school girls there will be conditioning, open gyms and opportunities to participate in summer shootouts. Our game schedule is always posted on the high school website. Hope to see you at a game or two next season when we look to build on this year's success. AUCTION 14 www.divinechildhighschool.org CLUBS StuCo and Attic Salt Attic Salt Club by Sandra Taylor The annual Divine Child Literary and Fine Arts Magazine has always been the main activity of the school's creative writing club, Attic Salt. It is not known by the current sponsors in what year the first year DC's Curio magazine debuted. Copies of the magazine going back to 1981 are to be Welcome to StuCo! We start our year off in August with a council picnic to prepare for the freshmen's first day of high school. Upon arriving to their first day, Student Council greets the freshmen with spirited attitudes to initiate them into the Falcon tradition. In early September, a leadership mass is celebrated to commemorate the members of the Student Council and National Honor Society. These leaders in our school take an oath to promise to represent their school as leaders of character and integrity. found in the club archives. The magazine's name was changed by popular vote of its staff in 1998 from Curio to Attic Salt and has kept this unusual name ever since. For the past several years the club's members have been involved in activities ranging from making bookmarks to reading to grade school children; to sponsoring a gently-used book drive to establish a library at the Detroit Institute for Children. Our next big ticket was 50th Anniversary The magazine has also received for the Homecoming 2008: “Our Golden Globe”. The night was a huge success with help from the DC Men's Club who generously provided hot dogs and chips. Our Spirit Week included festive days with wearing attire such as pajamas, jungle/safari wear, and showing off your falcon pride at the Pep Rally. Saturday was jam-packed for all students at Divine Child beginning with the annual parade of class floats and Varsity Football Game. The week ended with a dance held at the school's gym. It was a night to remember! Furthermore, in February, Divine Child welcomed back 2001 Alumnus Dan Gheesling, winner of CBS's reality show: “Big Brother 10.” Dan opened his “Choose to Win” motivational tour to the faculty and students of Divine Child High School. His speech inspired many of our students to continue to have a positive attitude throughout the school year. (English Teachers Professional Assoc.). Veteran Moderators, Sandra Taylor and Lyndal Last have accumulated between them, thirteen years of Attic Salt sponsorship. We always cherish our plucky, unsung, hard-working staff and love hearing from past members, many of whom have successfully pursued and attained careers in publishing and fine arts. Drop us a line with news - we would love to do an alum-themed and authored mini-mag some year. Then during Catholic Schools Week Katie Bowerson, Stephanie Santostasi, Tyra Kemp, Tricia Calka, and Angie Drabarek attended the Catholic Schools Week Mass at the Cathedral! Spirit seemed to be lacking of our DC students, so we as a council decided to pump up the crowd with SnowComing week, also in celebration of Mr. Falcon 2009. This fun-filled week included dressing up in winter gear, mismatched clothes, and all white attire. In concluding the week the students assembled in the gym for a winter pep rally. The contestants of Mr. Falcon competed in an intense balloon tossing, wheel barrowing game. As a final conclusion to the year the Student Council put on the mock male beauty pageant, Mr. Falcon. It featured everything from beachwear and dance routines, to Celebrity Jeopardy and The Newlyweds Game. The winner was Anthony Manno who sealed his place in Mr. Falcon lore with his portrayal 15 of “Big Brother” Winner and Divine Child alum Dan “Gheesling.” www.divinechildhighschool.org CLUBS NHS, Intramurals, Billiards and Capitalist National Honor Society The Divine Child Chapter of the National Honor Society continues to be an important contributor to the success of the school as a whole. At the start of this school year, our NHS was made up of twenty-five seniors, led by executive board members Joshua Alberts, Claire-Marie Brisson, Janel Furr, Duncan Miller, Greg Prusiewicz, and Sinead Victory. The school year began early for NHSers as they helped with book sales and freshmen orientation after an August NHS mini-retreat. Since then, the DC NHS has taken countless leadership and service opportunities including two blood drives, a winter fun fair for the girls at Vista Maria, Student-of-the-Month and Teacher-of-the-Month awards, assistance in all varieties of school functions, freshman Buddy Groups, tutoring (Falcon Help), and a few fundraisers (mostly involving food!). In the fall, eighteen juniors and seniors were selected to join the group, and again in the spring, nine more juniors were added. On Wednesday evening, April 30, these twenty-seven juniors and seniors will be formally inducted into the Divine Child National Honor Society at a traditional ceremony and reception held at the Church of the Divine Child. Next year's NHS will begin with twenty-four seniors. Members of the National Honor Society must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher and are selected in their junior year by the Faculty Council based upon evidence of leadership, service, and good character. The Divine Child Intramurals club approaches almost forty years of service to the DC School community. Our program has offered students an opportunity to participate in non-varsity sports in the fall and spring. This past autumn, the Gus Mareskas All-Stars were crowned as the 2008 touch football champions. This program provides students from grades 9-12, a chance to engage in sports activities. Intra murals are best suited for those who don't have time for the commitment of varsity sports but still seek sports programs. Mr. Monea & Mr. Lesnau are responsible for the club and supervise the games. D.C.'s Pocket Billiards Club has been shooting strong since 1979. Members play a best of five 8 Ball and 9 Ball match every Thursday during our season, followed by a tournament to determine an annual champion in each event ! Over the years we have played at various locations including : Golden Key Billiards, Gabe's Billiards, Rack n Cue, Billiards Cafe and our current home, The Ivory Room. Although we have never had a female champion to date, a number of lady players have graced us with their presence. This year's champions are Zach Carroll in 8 Ball and Pete Gajewski in 9 Ball. Although the club has had only one moderator through out it's existence, Mr. Lesnau is willing to pass the "Cue Stick" on to anyone interested in continuing the tradition in 2011. D.C.'s Capitalist Club continues to invest in stocks even though the pickings are slim. We had the pleasure of hosting guest speakers on the economy and financial advisers. Our most recent investment was in Wendy's Corporation. The club functions as a normal investment club with elected officers and actual cash investments with dividends distributed to members according to the amount of their investments. Our current president is Jack Bologna. The club meets every Monday after school. The Close Up trip to Washington D.C. is still an annual highlight for any senior interested in a week long hands on visit to our nation's capitol. Besides spending time with your state's Senator and your district's representative there's plenty of interaction with lobbyists and top ranking government officials. Participants share rooms with students from other major cities and get a chance to make new friends who have different perspectives on national issues. Of course there is ample time to tour the city, visit the museums and take in the sites. We generally go during spring time. 16 www.divinechildhighschool.org CLUBS Spanish, German, French and Greek/Latin Spanish Club First Semester, Spanish Club started with a Jolt of Java! Mrs. Dryer and Mrs. Polo brewed five varieties of gourmet coffee and ran three enormously popular Coffee Tastings. We had coffees from Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala and Costa Rica, and the students tasted and rated the coffees before serving up their favorite with frothed milk and sugar and enjoying Mexican Pastries. In December we helped Father McDonell with a Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the Parish. Spanish Club students set up and served refreshments after the mass and acted as Greeters and Ushers and even sang in the choir! Our Mexican parishioners, neighbors and friends were our special guests. students to the DIA for docent guided tours of the Spanish Masters. We saw Dalí and Miró, of course, and the Diego Rivera courtyard, but we also saw how the pre-Colombian art influenced some of the later artists. Afterwards, everyone ate their fill at the buffet at “los Galanes” and shopped in Mexican Town. We ended the year with a trip to St. Anne's for a Spanish Mass and lunch in Mexican Town. This semester, Spanish Club has been busy as usual. We showed a wonderful movie, “Bella,” which was in both Spanish and English, and spoke to the difficult choices that people make when life doesn't turn out the way they expect. The kids really enjoyed the challenge of understanding the authentic Spanish in different accents, and the look into the culture of the Spanishspeaking Immigrant community. Spanish Club took about fifty German Club This year's German Club has been very active! During last Easter break, we traveled to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for a wonderful tour of the alpine region. This fall, we attended Frankenmuth's annual Oktoberfest celebration, which included a church service in German. During October, the German Club again sponsored a highly-successful World Cup of Club Teams soccer tournament for all of the DC clubs. After fierce competition, the German team finally fell in the championship battle against the Spanish Club. Good fun was had by all, with bratwurst expertly grilled by Herr Young. German Game Day was a great success in November, which we combined with an authentic German pretzel-making party as well. The club also traveled to the DSO for a Beethoven concert that was very well received. Next year, we will be again traveling to Germany in the spring, with stops in Munich in southern Bavaria, Innsbruck at the foot of the Alps in Austria, Lucerne in Switzerland nestled below Mount Pilatus, and the beautiful city of Freiburg in Germany's scenic Black Forest. French Club Alive and Well at DCHS French pastries, crepes, baguettes and cheese-all these were featured in the gatherings of the Divine Child High School French Club during the fall 2008 semester. In November, Chef and French Club President Claire-Marie Brisson gave a lesson in crepe-making. Club members pariticipated enthousiastically in both the making and eating of these delicious treats. In December, Ms. Kostyshak, Club Moderator, got into the act by sharing the expertise gained from a cooking lesson with a real French chef with club members. French Apple Tarts with flaky, buttery crusts were made and enjoyed by everyone who attended this session. February saw club members taking part in the Mardi Gras celebration involving members of all DCHS World Language clubs, which was a big success. A few lucky club members will also be traveling this June to France and Italy for 10 days, accompanied by Ms. Kostyshak and Mrs. Sovine. Greek/Latin Class & Club: This year, only the second year of our newly formed Latin program, we already have over sixty-five students enrolled in Latin at the High School and the entire 7th and 8th grades taking an exploratory version of the class. Due to the increased interests in the class and the ancient world, we have also formed the Latin Club. This year we have participated in several events, including our World Language Week celebrations, the World Language World Cup Tournament (hosted by the German Club), and our Mardi Gras festivities. We have also organized and attended a traditional Latin Mass, which Fr. McDonald presided over. Our most recent event has been a weekend trip to Washington DC to explore the Ancient Greek and Roman roots of our Western Civilization as seen in the art, architecture and politics of our Capitol city. While there, we were able to visit the National Gallery, which had a Pompeii exhibit on loan from Naples, the Library of Congress, the White House, the Capitol Building, and we meet Senator Levin for a private meet and greet. We are looking forward to the upcoming events and programs next year including our Summer 2010 trip to Italy. Due to the increased interests in the Greco-Roman World, we are going to be offering first year Ancient Greek class next year as well. 17 www.divinechildhighschool.org A Year of Firsts for the Theatre Department! It seems fitting, as we mark fifty years of DCHS history, that activities in the theatre department have been filled with a year of firsts. We've come a long way from the first musical Ichabod and Me performed in the grade school gym in 1965! Change can be exciting and this year was no exception! The fall production, Dead Man Walking set several records for the department. The production was the culmination of two year's worth of work creating a collaborative show with North Rosedale Park Players, as well as integrating the book with cross-curricular, school-wide assignments, and a social justice church service with guest speakers. Not only did the fall play have adults and students in the cast, but ran a record of eight performances in two different locations! Opening night, the National Director for the Dead Man Walking Project hosted a talk-balk with the audience, as well. This show also introduced our new Technical Director, Thomas Shurtleff. Mr. Shurtleff's vision for the tech department is to create a tech team, with all students capable of doing all tech jobs, which so far, seems to be a great success. We are lucky to have him on board! Thespian Troupe 3508 attended the State Thespian Festival at MSU this December, where Director Karen Pritchard was initiated in to the Michigan Educational Theatre Association Theatre Hall of Fame! This was another first for theatre department! Two students won a superior rating for their duo acting performance at the festival, and received an invitation to perform at three other venues: the first ever All Dearborn Student Scene Festival in February, held at Dearborn High, The Michigan All State Student Scene Festivalwhich was held at EMU in early March, and then again for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, held on Western Michigan's Campus in May. Never before have any of our students been invited to perform in these venues! At Eastern, they were treated to a discussion with the famous choreographer Ted Levy and a demonstration of his outstanding tap dancing. So, congrats on another first for Timothy O' Connor ‘09 and Gregory Prusiewicz ‘09. The thespians and playwriting class attended a premier performance of an original play entitled The Beach at CMU in April. The day long event featured a discussion with the playwright. The ability to speak with a working writer proved valuable to our budding DC playwrights, who learned employment is possible in the arts! Our bi-annual Children's Theatre Traveling Troupe “ Pritchard's Players” performed the show Gulliver's Travels at five of the area elementary schools, to rave reviews. Several seniors were in a DC play for the first time with this show, and wondered why they waited so long to get bit by the theatre bug. South Pacific helped warm the hearts of many on the last few cold days before Easter Break, and continued our fine tradition of having a live orchestra to play the music. Many schools have switched to canned music. Two alumni came back to help play in the pit- including Alex Pritchard (clarinet '00), Samantha Puzzoli (saxophone '08). A major stage renovation project is underway to fix up the numerous safety issues with the actual stage floor and pit, as well as proposed new seating. As we upgrade our sound and lighting system, DCHS auditorium will continue to be a fine facility which accommodates the community at large, as well as the immediate high school. When you consider that the auditorium was built in 1967, many of it features, including the seats, have never been replaced. We appreciate your support with our various fundraising projects for this renovation! The school year will end with the annual Thespian Awards Banquet, where Gregory Prusiewicz and Timothy O'Connor will receive the National Honor Thespian Award. Only one other DC Student has earned that title since the school charter was bestowed in 1982. As you can read, DC theater continues to follow tradition, while paving the way with new opportunities for our students and audiences! Care to be a part of it? We are always looking for adults to work with our theatre booster group: Song and Stage. Contact Mrs. Pritchard at the school for more info! “Overture, Curtain, Lights” (David-Livingston from the Bugs Bunny Hour) Calling the many who remember the smell of grease paint, shining in the footlights, creating sets and lighting and performing in the spectacular play productions of their Divine Child High School days…..your assistance with preparing productions is welcome. Mr. Shurtleff, a new faculty member in 2008, is seeking alumni help with the DC stage crew program. If you have talent (stage lighting, sound skills, props, tools, art skills) and particularly time (you know how much it takes to stage an excellent production) you are welcome to help pass these traditions on to the next generation. 18 www.divinechildhighschool.org Alumni currently employed in the theatrical crafts, working in film, television or video production, and even those who continue to love theater by working in local community theater companies, are especially valued. I myself am a displaced High School and community theater junkie. In the fall of 2009, we a seeking to raise the quality of our already marvelous productions by offering regular workshop opportunities. Please contact Mr. Shurtleff at this email [email protected] or by leaving a message with the DCHS office 313-562-1990. ALUMNI Message from the President and Alumni Focus Dear AlumniAs DCHS continues its 50th year celebration, we are pleased to send out our brand new Alumni magazine to all of you. We are excited to share with you all the fine things DCHS has been doing this year along with the faculty and students that make our school continue its great traditions. Many of the clubs, sports, and activities that you participated in are still going strong today. Our number of sports teams have reached the record of twenty-four. Our Student Council and National Honor Society leaders keep everyone busy throughout the year. Our Thespians perform often on our stage and compete nationally. Our Fine Arts Department performed South Pacific for our spring musical this year which I am sure many of you were involved in past performances of the same musical. Our Language Department continues to plan student travels overseas and the Science Department has many award winning Science Fair projects. Many of our faculty that you knew so well continues to enlighten all of our high school students. Alumni Focus The 42-year old Shurmur is in his sixth season as the Eagles quarterbacks coach and his ninth as member of Andy Reid's staff. In this role, he has helped Donovan McNabb earn three of his five Pro Bowl berths. In 2004, McNabb turned in the most productive season of his career, establishing franchise records in QB rating (104.7), completion pct. (64.0), and passing yards (3,875). In fact, McNabb became the only quarterback in NFL history to have a season with 30plus TD passes (31) and fewer than 10 interceptions (8). In 2002, Shurmur earned praise for his poise displayed after McNabb and Koy Detmer went down with injuries late in the season. Down to little-used A.J. Feeley, who had not started since his junior year at Oregon, the Eagles went 4-1 down the stretch. Feeley, a 5th round draft choice in 2001, was traded to Miami in 2004 for a 2nd round pick in 2005. Similarly, Shurmur withstood another McNabb injury in 2006 and helped back-up Jeff Garcia step into the starting role and lead the Eagles to a 6-2 record (including playoffs). During our incoming freshmen registration we welcomed the Class of 2013. It is so wonderful to watch our tradition press on. The Class of 2009 will soon be our newest addition to our Alumni family. It is with your continued support that DCHS keeps going. We continue to welcome back all of you if you ever want to discuss career paths with our students. And please continue to send us updates that you wish to share with others. I had the opportunity to meet with some of our Alumni at a reception in Chicago this past February. And we look forward to seeing more of you as we hold more of these in the months ahead. We are all working very hard to keep DCHS a strong, productive high school. We want our school to be the home of many more Falcons in years to come. Cheryl (Oros) Nelson '75 - DCAA President His first three seasons in Philadelphia were spent as the Eagles tight ends coach, helping develop three-time Pro Bowler Chad Lewis. An All-Big Ten conference center and team captain at Michigan State, Shurmur joined Andy Reid's staff in Philadelphia in 1999 after an 11-year stint as a college assistant. Shurmur spent the 1998 season at Stanford as an offensive line coach in charge of the centers and guards. Under his tutelage, the Cardinal offensive line allowed the fewest sacks per pass attempt in the PAC 10 and, in the process, helped first-year quarterback Todd Husak become the third quarterback in Stanford history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, Shurmur spent nine seasons at Michigan State instructing the tight ends, special teams, and offensive line. Under his guidance, MSU developed three tight ends that went on to the NFL: Ty Hallock, Duane Young, and Mitch Lyons. In addition, Shurmur helped Derrick Mason establish a school record with 2,575 career kickoff return yards. Shurmur himself was a four-year letter winner at Michigan State, earning All-Big Ten conference and honorable mention AllAmerica honors in 1987. That same year, Shurmur co-captained a Spartans squad that defeated USC in the Rose Bowl. A solid student as well, he earned his MBA in financial administration. As such, the Dearborn Heights, MI, native became the first graduate student to play at MSU. After signing as a rookie free agent with Green Bay in 1988, Shurmur was released during training camp and subsequently began his coaching career, becoming a graduate assistant with the Spartans that fall.
