We are very grateful to Tonya Mowery for her service as Secretary on the CPFJ Board for the last 4 years. She resigned this month and will be missed. If you are interested in serving on the CPFJ Board, please contact the CPFJ Office. .. We mourn the passing of jazz great Ron Kalina - pianist and harmonica artist. Ron, originally from Reading PA, moved to New York in his 20’s and wrote orchestrations for Dizzy Gillespie’s first big band. He moved to the West Coast in the 70’s where he often played harmonica with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As a pianist, he accompanied such performers as Linda Ronstadt, Joe Williams, the Four Freshmen, Gloria Lynne and Johnny Hartman. Ron visited our Festival several times and accompanied Anita O’Day on one of those occasions. He was 86.....R.I.P. . CPFJ's focus on jazz education has begun with workshops conducted by Tom Strohman at Boiling Springs H.S. and Jonathan Ragonese at Cedar Cliff H.S. We will also begin hosting pre-concert lecture/demonstrations with the jazz artists who perform at our Spring and Fall Concert Series and arrange school workshops by the artists on the Monday after their concert performances. We will also provide complimentary concert tickets to students so that music teachers and band directors can bring their students to hear the great artists that we present. Adult classes on the history of jazz and the art of improvisation are also being organized for those of you who would like to increase your listening and playing knowledge. . Please note the appeal to “Send a Kid to Camp” (on page 8) and give generously - our camp is a wonderful learning and bonding experience for kids from age 10 - 21 and we are excited to have Steve Wilson & Stefon Harris as the lead faculty members this year. If you would like to donate to the fund, please go to our website or call the office. With the Camp’s expansion from three to four days - June 15th to 18th - we hope to exceed last year's record Camp attendance of 87 students. A registration form is on Page 8 and available on our website and be sure to let your young musician friends know about this great opportunity. We thank Ben and Kristen Olewine of the Olewine Family Trust for their annual grant to underwrite the Camp and are grateful to Penn National Insurance, the Hall Foundation, and private donors for underwriting student’s tuition. . We are very excited to share the new CPFJ videos which will feature film of many events from our 35th Year Celebration - the 2015 Jazz Camp, Dauphin Co. Jazz & Wine Fest, and October Fall Concert. Also featured in the film are many interviews with CPFJ members, musicians, students and more. The documentary will be unveiled at the May Spring Series concert in Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community college. Thanks to the Lois Grass Foundation for generously underwriting this historic film. You may preview the Jazz Camp video on our website. . As always, we hope you will share some of your time and help us by volunteering - there are many ways you can help the Friends of Jazz - PLEASE CALL! Support JAZZ the Music of Freedom! 2. . Jazz Band, Eric Graybill, Director 4PM CPFJ Video 4:30 Steve Turre Steve Turre is a premier artist in today’s jazz scene, having played with Art Blakey as well as his 30 years with “Saturday Night Live”. Steve will perform on trombone and conch shells. We will premier the new CPFJ 35th Anniversary Video at this concert featuring footage from the Jazz Festival, Jazz Camp, and many interviews. steveturre.com One of the world’s preeminent jazz innovators, trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre, has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). Turre was born to Mexican-American parents and grew up San Francisco where he absorbed daily doses of mariachi, blues and jazz. In 1972 Steve Turre’s career picked up momentum when Ray Charles hired him to go on tour. A year later Turre’s mentor Woody Shaw brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Turre went on to work with a diverse list of musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, J.J. Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduced him to the seashell as an instrument and while touring in Mexico City, Turre’s relatives informed him that his ancestors played the shells. Since then, Turre has incorporated seashells into his diverse musical style. In addition to performing as a member of TV’s Saturday Night Live Band since 1984, he has 15 recordings available that feature jazz masters Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Casandra Wilson, J.J. Johnson and a host of major musicians. Steve has a strong command of all musical genres and when it comes to his distinct brand of jazz, he always keeps one foot in the past and one in the future. Accompanying Steve will be three great NYC musicians: Pianist Rick Germanson - currently pianist for Russell Malone and Kyle Eastwood, he has toured with Pat Martino and the Cannonball Legacy Band. Bassist Gerald Cannon - has toured and recorded with Stanley Turrentine, Elvin Jones, Dexter Gordon and Roy Hargrove and is currently Music Director of the McCoy Tyner Trio, Drummer Orion Turre - the hard swinging and talented son of Steve Turre. TICKETS: available by credit card in advance on our website or by calling the office; ticket order form on page 9 of this issue; and they will be available the day of the concert at the door: Adults $24, Members $20, Students $10 FREE PARKING in the lots at HACC Steve Wilson & Stefon Harris Friday, June 17 Messiah College, High Center for the Arts 7:30PM 1 College Ave., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 Steve Wilson & Stefon Harris will be teaching at our annual Jazz Camp this summer (June 15-18) and we will feature their group for our third Spring Concert during the Camp in the beautiful High Center at Messiah College. Vibraphonist/percussionist/composer STEFON HARRRIS - the Los Angeles Times called him "one of the most important young artists in jazz" who is "at the forefront of new New York music" and "much in demand as a star sideman". Harris has played with many jazz luminaries including Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, Kurt Elling, and Charlie Hunter, in addition to releasing several of his own critically well-regarded albums. He recently developed an “App” for jazz education called the “Harmony Cloud” which he will use to instruct students at his year’s camp. . STEVE WILSON has attained “first-call” status as a studio musician, concert performer and educator. He is currently Associate Professor at City College of N.Y., and on faculty at the Juilliard School, and has been honored by New York University recognizing his outstanding service in jazz education. A musician's musician, Wilson has performed on more than 150 recordings led by George Duke, Michael Brecker, & Maria Schneider among many others, as well as eight recordings as a leader. He was a member of the Dave Holland Quintet, and from 1998-2001 was with Chick Corea's Grammy winning sextet "Origin" Tickets for the 36th Annual Spring Concert Series are available in this issue (see the order form), on our website - www.friendsofjazz.org, or you may call the CPFJ Office - 717-540-1010. 4. CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP June 15 - 18 2016 MESSIAH COLLEGE CPFJ’s annual Jazz Camp will have a major change this year - we are extending the Camp to a FOUR DAY EVENT to allow for more in depth instruction. This year’s faculty will include some of the finest performer/educators in jazz! Steve Wilson - Stefon Harris - Jeff Stabley Paul Bratcher - Kirk Reese - Steve Meashey & more! . Please tell your young friends about the Camp and encourage them to attend. All students aged 10 to 21 with a desire to learn to improvise or improve their skills are welcome. There is a free concert on June 18th with all faculty and students participating. Our thanks to Dr. Bill Stowman and the staff at Messiah College for welcoming us to the campus again this year, our 15th Annual Central PA Jazz Camp! More info at our website. SEND A KID TO CAMP... . Our annual Central PA Jazz Camp at the High Center on the campus of Messiah College will be held June 15-18. It is a four day camp this year with two very special musician/educators – Steve Wilson and Stefon Harris - heading the faculty and presenting a major concert on Friday evening June 17th at 7:30p.m. The traditional student concert will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 7p.m. with all student ensembles performing in the beautiful Parmer Hall. . There are many talented young people in this area who would love to attend this inspiring event, but their family finances don't stretch far enough to provide the tuition for their son or daughter. . YOU CAN HELP! Please consider funding a scholarship to the camp. Tuition for residents is $425 and for commuters, $375. You can fund a student’s tuition or simply make a donation of an amount of your choice to the Camp Scholarship Fund. . Make your tax deductible donation with your credit card at our new online store on our website - scroll down and choose from the Central PA Jazz Camp options. If donating by check – make the check out to “CPFJ” and mail to CPFJ at 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112 and include a note designating the donation to the Jazz Camp. .. Every student who has attended our Jazz Camp in the past has developed an increased understanding of and love for jazz. Your support will help us to not only educate and inspire our young artists, but will also aid in building a future audience for America’s Music – Jazz! CHECK OUR WEBSITE - WWW.FRIENDSOFJAZZ.ORG FOR UPDATED INFORMATION AND CAMP APPLICATION FORMS. Our gratitude to the Olewine Family Trust for their generous grant to underwrite the Camp. There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! Please donate to the Ron Waters Scholarship Fund and support our talented young musicians. Annual scholarships go to high school seniors entering college for music as well as grants for students of all ages to attend our CPFJ Jazz Camp. You may donate on our website www.friendsofjazz.org or send a check to the CPFJ office at 5721 Jonestown Rd., Hbg 17112 8. MUSIC LOVERS BONANZA!!! . As many of you know, we recently received a large bequest of over 2,500 jazz CD's and hundreds of LP's from the estate of long time CPFJ member Joseph Shaw. . We have been presenting the cd's for sale at our concerts, but limited table space has prevented us from showing all of this collection at one time. The complete collection has now arrived at our expanded office space where it may all be examined and purchases made. Call for an appointment after June 1 (717-540-1010) to shop the entire collection. Pricing for the LP's will vary (these are mostly big bands and vocalists). Most CD's are sold at $5.00 per disc. . We will be presenting several boxes of cd's for sale at our ArtsFest tent over Memorial Day weekend in Riverfront Park (Front and Walnut Sts.).
