AUCTION RESULTS AND PREVIEWS went for the unbelievable sum of €16,300,000 to an international collector present in the hall. Baillon's collection was sold completely and brought attractive catalogues and spectacular show rooms. From the summer months in 2014 we have seen a trend looming on the horizon. And this trend still holds, as there is "saturation" in the demand for certain car models which saw huge price surges in the last two or three years. The Mercedes 300 SL Roadster, W198 is an example of that. However, this does not mean that there is no demand anymore, but rather that the price spiral turns more slowly the higher you get. And at the moment, people are not prepared to spend their money regardless of the price. This is valid for trademark models like the Ferrari Daytona Coupé or the 250 GT Lusso, for example. In our view, this is a healthy development. We do not see the immediate danger of a drop in interest as many do. On the contrary: we have reached a plateau but a high-level one, admittedly. Furthermore, in our perception only exceptional cases of "pre-war era" models did profit from the sound price development in the last couple of years which is a big shame from my point of view, I have to say. On the other hand, cars from the 70s and 80s and especially so-called supercars enjoy great popularity which leads to high prices. There truly is nothing to worry about as this is mainly due to new buyers from a much younger generation who just found themselves a new hobby. Obviously, they start with cars they liked when they did not have the financial means to buy them. And this is what I tell people when they ask me: please do only buy a classic car that you really like personally. Do not listen to anybody else on the matter. And please make your joy the first yield on your list and not the interest on an investment. I certainly do not exaggerate when I say: you will love it! Last but not least: there is a lot of money on the market. And we do not see the bottom falling out of the market. There is nothing to worry about as it does not come true by merely saying that it will. You just have to enjoy this beautiful hobby! RM Auctions started its auction marathon on Annette Abaci — RM AUCTIONS Germany €25,150,000 in total. That's a sensational success, which proves once again that it is mainly the original condition of a car – even beyond any prospect of a possible restoration – which guarantees top prices nowadays. One can only hope that all the unrestored highlights of the auction like the Ferrari IN THE MIDDLE OF A WORLD GOING CRAZY... He was about to secure the Formula 1 World Championship title, beating greats like Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. Being a Williams fan, this was a very emotional moment for me: the underdog finally managed to defeat the established greats. Matthieu Lamoure and Pierre Novikoff of French auction house Artcurial must have had the same feeling when they signed the auction contract with the Baillon family. But let's start the story from its beginning... 250 California Spyder, the Maserati A6G 2000 (sold for €2,000,000) or the Talbot Lago T26 Grand Sport SWB (sold for €1,700,000) will stay in some kind of likeable original state and not fall victim to a total restoration. Such an action would irrevocably destroy the uniqueness of the cars. Aided by this successful auction, former underdog Artcurial was able to solidify its supremacy over the hard fought market around the annual Retromobile fair in Paris. Adding the sales of 'normal' cars, Artcurial reaches a total turnover of €46,000,000. It was able to sell 89 percent of the lots and even set 10 new world records. Arcturial's two main competi- BY JAN B. LUEHN Roger Baillon was a successful haulage contractor in the South of France and he assembled an interesting collection of cars throughout his life. His passion started in the 1950s, the cars soon filled several sheds, barns and huts around his castle situated in idyllic Echire in the south west of France. For financial reasons he was never able to fulfill his eternal dream of a genuine museum of cars. And so the precious machines were just lying around at his Chateau Gaillard, which turned into some kind of luxury scrap yard. But the Baillon heirs knew about this 'Sleeping Beauty's Castle of cars': “Its garden was our playground,” remembers grand daughter Celine, 40. “We played hide-and-seek with my brother there.” The collection included a couple of jewels like the exAlain Delon Ferrari California Spyder, which was thought to be lost for many decades. February sixth was the great day everybody was waiting for: the 59 finds in the Baillon collection were brought to a separate hall at the Retromobile fair grounds and put on display perfectly. Surrounded by a setting based on an old barn, dimly lit and accompanied by quiet music, the cars were presented to the public one last time as a complete collection in great style. Around 3,500 bidders and onlookers swarmed into the hall with great expectations when the auction began. And there was much on offer. Already Lot 1, an utterly beat-up Singer Roadster with an estimated price of €800, was sold for €10,800 – more then the tenfold price! This lunacy continued throughout the whole auction of these hardto-rescue exhibits. One can assume that most of the wrecks will stay in their present states, serving sinply as a kind of sculptures. Next on the list was a Delahaye 135M Cabriolet, also a total wreck, which was sold for €429,000. The auction went on for hours and hours, reaching its final climax, which was the sale of the exAlain Delon Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB. The main question of the whole week was what price this car would achieve. It started with an estimated price between 9.5 and 20 million euros, and the expectations in the auction hall were rather varied. After a long bidding war, the car finally tors RM Auctions and Bonhams received the short end of the stick with regard to numbers – despite Wednesday, but without the usual success. Its two heavily-praised top items, the very attractive Delahaye 135S (estimated price of 1.2-1.6 million euros) and the Alfa Romeo 6C2500 Touring from 1939 (estimated price 1.9-2.4 million euros), remained un- THE MARKET IS A BIT MORE STABLE NOW sold for €937,250 – hardtop inclusive! The top auc- Recent auctions in Arizona and Paris confirmed that the market is fundamentally stable at the moment and, more importantly, realistic. You can get top prices for top cars. However, prices for some cars reached a certain level after they had risen considerably recently. Admittedly, Ferrari Daytona, Dino or MercedesBenz 300 SL, for example, have reached a high level but lately they did not experience huge growth rates. Normally, for a car to achieve a good price, its quality should be appropriately excellent. Especially nice cars and/or rare models, however, still achieve exceptional prices. We saw that at one of our recent auctions in Paris where the 1965 Aston Marin DB5 Convertible was sold for the World Record price of 1,879,500 euros. But you also realise that at the moment buyers do not follow all trends in this market. The majority of them are well informed. They have a lot of background knowledge which is shared quickly via the modern media networks. But I am looking forward very much to our future auctions at the Mercedes-Benz-Museum and at the "Spa Classic" event where, apart from other wonderful lots, we will have a Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabrio A with a special works bodywork and a Mercedes-Benz 370S Mannheim Sport-Cabriolet. And so RM's top sellers were more 'humble' cars, such as a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1963 that went for €1,624,000 and a Porsche 904 GTS that sold for €1,428,000. Bornhams resided in the exclusive Grand Palais and inspired potential buyers with an amazing line-up of vehicles. Its obvious highlights were a rather rare Aston Martin DB5 Convertible from 1965, which went for €1,897,500, and an Aston Martin DB4 Cabriolet from 1962, sold for €1,219,000. Lovers of pre-war cars had something to cheer about as well; the Alfa Romeo 6C1750 Grand Sport from 1930 was sold for €1,184,500. My personal favourite was the JAN B. And it is here that, for the third time since 2011, the finest automobile artworks of recent years will be offered to the bidders of RM Auctions on May 23rd. Among all these cars, the 1952 Ferrari 212 Export will get the most attention for sure as it is the last of its kind to have been "robed" by Touring. This Ferrari with the chassis number 0158 ED was handed over to Baron Luigi Bordonaro di Chiaramonte on February 5th, 1952 and was supposed to give proof of its qualities in competition as was the 166 Allemano Spider of the Italian nobleman. Encouraged by a victory at the hill-climb event Palermo-Monte Pellegrino at Sicily, the Baron registered his 212 for the Targa Florio in the same year. He finished tenth overall and fifth in his class – a decent result for a privateer driver. In June, the original Tipo 225 rear axle of the car was replaced with the stronger Tipo 340 edition. Apart from a small crash at the 1954 Pergusa Grand Prix, Bordonaro raced this Barchetta till 1955 when he once again won the Palermo-Pellegrino hill-climb event. After that, he sold the car to Edouard Margairuz from Geneva. This gentleman did not hesitate one second and entered the car, now with the plate number GE-30550, in the 1956 Mille Miglia. Margairuz and his navigator Robert Gremaud were doing quite well until they had to retire. CHASSIS NUMBER 0158 ED WILL BE ON SALE AT RM AUCTIONS VILLA ERBA ON MAY 23. FROM LAKE LEMAN TO CALIFORNIA From the race track to the Concours: the Ferrari 0158 ED was sold to California for the joy of Ferrari collector Art Connell at Pebble Beach where it stayed for a couple of years. The "thoroughbred horse" was then sold to Chris Cord who put it in his personal stable, the legend of which soon reached San Francisco where Ferrari specialist Robert T. Devlin recognized the true value of the rarity. He bought the car to run it at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and got a second place in 1966. After the Ferrari had had different owners in California and had even taken part in a race for historic cars, it was sold to Joseph J. Pendergast from Tampa, Florida. From there it came back to Europa as it was bought by Juan Quintano from Ferrari Spain. Via London and the "Cavallino Classic" at Palm Beach, the car reached its next destination: Joliet/Illinois, where Williams Jacobs Jr. went to show and drive it at several events. Now, the 160 bhp Ferrari (V12 engine, Tipo 212 with three dual Weber carburettors) is at home again in the sunshine of California. But soon the car will be on its true home turf again to find itself a new enthusiast. This spectacular Barchetta (which translates to "small boat" in English) with the beautiful sound of one of Aurelio Lampredi's engine artworks is a pleasure both optically and acoustically.
