VWOA Officers and Board Members have
spent a great deal of time in trying to
document the past history of VWOA
through digitizing the existing past
records of VWOA and made an especially
great effort to preserve the Awards Year
Book published each year by VWOA which
are in hard copy in our files.
2009
Our VWOA Honorary President, Dr. Lee
De Forest who with the Officers and
Board of Directors, established the
Scholarship at Capital Radio Engineering
Institute was presented to the BOY
SCOUTS OF AMERICA.
If you have visited the VWOA Web Site you
will see a continuing effort to record the
listing of prior awards in a decade by
decade presentation. In our continuing
efforts we just finished the Year Book for
1960 and I was impressed by the Awards
made in that year.
Since next year will mark 100 years of the
establishment of the BOY SCOUTS OF
AMERICA, I thought the history presented
in the VWOA Year Book of 1960 would be
especially interesting to many of our
members.
It was a year in which The Marconi
Memorial Service Award Plaque was
awarded to THE BOY SCOUTS OF
AMERICA, Commemorating their Golden
Jubilee 1910-1960.
A reduced copy, although still large in
digital bits, of the Year Book is attached
to this Email News Letter.

I am glad you found the name of your
Grandfather on our VWOA Memorial in Battery
Park, New York as listed in our VWOA Web
Site. Battery Park is in a period of refurbishing
by New York City and the New York
Conservatory asked to place the Monument in
storage until they finish their reconstruction of
the Park. You will find information and
pictures of its prior installation on our Web
Site. Further information on the VWOA
Monument can be found in the 2009 VWOA
Newsletter #50 located on www.vwoa.org .
I am trying to find any information about
Raymond Brazner that your organization may
have available.
Raymond is my grandfather. His ship went
down in 1960 when my mother was a young
girl. I came across your page in a search that
I was doing and was able to give her the
exciting news that there is a memorial and that
you had listed his name on your page. It
brought her to tears, but she was happy to
know he wasn't forgotten.
Attached is a PDF file of the U. S. Coast
Guard Board of Investigation, which was used
by the VWOA Committee in certifying the
circumstances associated with your
Grandfather and resulting in his name being
placed on a Bronze Plaque attached to the
Monument.

I am trying to gather anything that I can find
out about him, whether it is general
information or possibly hearing from someone
who knew him, since my mother never had the
opportunity to know her father well.
Any assistance you may be able to give me
would be more appreciated than you can

The upper right brass plaque on the back of
the monument was the commemoration of
your grandfather.
When you were looking at the plaques your
view past the monument took in the sweep of
the upper bay, to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis
Island, and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge
which his ship passed under on its way to sea
on the day before his ship met disaster.

pleasant surprise on a Sunday afternoon.
I am sending this along to my mother as well
so that she can read over the information. I
hope at some point she will get an opportunity
to go see the memorial, as she lives much
closer and should be able to find out when the
refurbishment is complete.

not expect such a quick update from VWOA
Member Frank Kelley.
The recognition that VWOA gave to my
Grandfather means a lot to me. I, of course,
never had the good fortune to meet him, but
in this way I know that his name will never be
forgotten.

Here is an account of my last cruise in
"Discovery" with information how it came
about. It really was a memorable trip and the
ceremonies went very well. After the event at
the War Memorail, we were taken aboard the
decommissioned nuclear-powered ice-breaker
"Lenin" for a reception. It was a wonderful and
