Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Meet the Parents Session
15
Secondary One
HOW IS MY CHILD COPING IN
SCHOOL?
Form teachers will share their observations with
the parents
IF THE BAG IS VERY HEAVY, CAN
STUDENTS PUT SOME BOOKS IN
SCHOOL?
If students pack their bags according to their timetable, the weight of the bag should be manageable.
Students should take their books home for
revision and preparation for the next lesson.
School will not be held liable for the loss of any
textbooks left in the classroom.
ARE THERE ANY EXTRA
CLASSES EVERY WEEKEND?
There are no extra classes on Saturdays.
However, some CCAs like Boys’ Brigade and Girls’
Brigade do have their training sessions on
Saturday morning.
Other CCAs like the Band, NCC and NPCC may
also have training sessions or activities on
selected weekends.
Occasionally, there might be school activities on
Saturday.
Parents will be informed of such activities through
official letters.
CAN MALAY BOYS WEAR LONG
PANTS FOR PE?
The school has PE attire that all students should
wear during PE lesson. Please refer to the Student
Handbook.
The PE attire is part of the school uniform and
should be worn as prescribed.
For clarification, please approach your child’s PE
teacher for assistance.
HOW CAN PARENTS HELP THE
STUDENTS TO EXCEL IN SECONDARY
1?
Help your child to develop good learning and study
habits (this includes controlled use of IT and
mobile devices).
Advise them to be proactive during lessons and
revise regularly.
Check that they complete homework and
assignments given by teachers diligently.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE
ACADEMIC PROGRESS?
There are assigned homework to assess students’
learning during lessons.
Class tests, assignments and pop quizzes form
part of the routine assessments of the students’
learning.
There are common tests in Terms 1 and 3, mid-year
and end of year examinations to assess students’
overall learning.
HOW WILL YOU RESPOND IF A
CHILD STRUGGLES IN CLASS?
Subject teachers will work with students to find out
the reason behind the struggle.
Possible solutions may include remediation,
consultation, working with students to develop
good time management habits and study skills.
Collaborate with parents to monitor students’
revision at home.
WHAT IS YOUR HOMEWORK
POLICY?
Homework includes practice exercises,
assignments and projects, but not revision of
school work or studying for tests and
examinations.
Lower Secondary students are expected to spend
an average of 1.5 to 2.5 hr a day on their homework
each day.
The school is aware that students need to have a
balanced life, so form teachers and Year Heads will
monitor the amount of homework given to
students closely.
IS THERE ANY EXTRA
SUPPLEMENTARY DURING THIS
PERIOD?
Generally, Secondary One students do not have
supplementary lessons. However, certain students
may be identified to attend remediation sessions
organised by their subject teachers in the
afternoon.
Parents will be notified of this through their child’s
handbook.
HOW TO GET STUDENTS TO
FOCUS ON MATHS?
Parents must believe that their children can do well
in Maths regardless of their background and
continue to encourage them to do so.
Daily practice is needed to provide sufficient
exposure to different types of questions.
Perseverance, hard work and attention during
lessons are keys to success in Mathematics.
HOW DO YOUR ARRANGE
STUDENTS IN CLASS?
Students in the same course are randomly placed
into the classes.
Students are seated in their classroom usually
according to their height.
Parents who have concern over where their child is
seated may approach the form teacher for help.
WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE
ALLOWED FOR LATERAL
TRANSFER TO EXPRESS/N(A)
STREAM IN 2016?
As long as the students meet the criteria for lateral
transfer and are assessed to be ready for the
course, they will be laterally transferred.
The school does not set a cap on the percentage
allowed for lateral transfer in a year.
