2010 is a special year
for the Miglias, which
celebrates its 40th
birthday. Four times
champion Bill Sollis is
once again back for
another attempt at
the title, with reigning Se7ens champion Kane Astin trying to add the Miglia
crown in 2010.

Well it is only just under
two weeks to go before our first round at
Rockingham and according to the BARC....
“the number of entries
is encouraging”.
From its days of being
a centre of British Steel
production, it is now a
well appointed race
track with fantastic
viewing areas. Rockingham always seems
to produce an exciting race from both
formulae and I’m sure
this time will be no different.
One change to our
normal format is the
location of the official
scales. As the Members have requested,
this year the Club will
be providing its own
scales which will act
as the official scales
for post race weighing. Ralph Saunders
has kindly offered his
services to look after
these and I have
asked
Steve Burns
{Championship Clerk
of the Course} if these
can be positioned in
our paddock area.
This will make life much
easier for Ralph and
Members will be able
to weigh their cars before qualifying or racing in the relative
peace of our own
paddock. Please remember that these
are owned by Ralph,
so look after them as if
they were your own!
The intention is for the
Club scales to be positioned in the Club
paddock
whenever
possible. If the paddock area doesn’t allow this {lack of room
or unsuitable surface}
then they will be positioned in the scrutineering area. Steve
Prior is aware of this
situation
and
has
given his approval. So
if Steve P. requires to
weigh any cars after
the race, then he will
escort the required car
{s} to the paddock
where the weighing
area will be deemed
as parc ferme. I hope
this arrangement will
meet with the requirement of the Members.
Yet again my thanks
go to Ralph and PITSTOP.
Another topic that
was requested by the
Members was that of
monitoring
driving
standards in 2010. For
those who attended
the AGM, it was indicated that the use of
onboard cameras was
the only method that
could be accepted
by the race officials in
any
dispute.
John
Meale [an ex Mini 7
Racing Club racer and
now an
‘ordinary’
Member of the Club}
has kindly agreed to
install some low cost
cameras in chosen
cars at Rockingham.
This in no way will conflict with the Club’s
official cameras which
Steve Prior has control.
The object is to assess
the quality of recording, field of view,
ease of mounting, du-
rability etc. before the
Committee decides to
purchase any of these
cameras. My thanks
go to John for putting
in the time to design
an easily mounted
bracket and offering
to install these cameras.
I would like to remind
all race Members that
their cars must carry
the required decals to
score Championship
points. The decals that
are required this year
are Dunlop, Corgi,
SPAX, Racecar, JD
Motors, Piper Cams
and Mini Magazine. All
of
these
decals
‘should’ be available
from Ralph Saunders.
Door squares and sunstrips are available
from Mike Jackson. As
I write this chat {can
you write a chat?}, we
are still looking for a
Trophy sponsor. So if
you know of a Company or individual who
would like their/his/her
name ‘in lights’, then
please let one of the
Committee Members
know. As you can see
in this Newsletter we
have already chosen
this year’s trophies and
these will be in place
throughout the year,
regardless of a sponsor
coming forward.

You will also see in the
newsletter that Richard Williamson {ex
Club Magazine Editor}
has made an excellent start on listing
what the Club has in
past programs, results
etc. Thus we can now
indicate what is missing.
Please
look
through your records
to see if you can fill
some of the gaps.
Richard is hoping to
attend Rockingham,
so he will probably be
coming around the
paddock asking for
information. The aim is
to produce a CD of
Club records etc. by
the end of the year!

Finally I would like to
welcome my youngest
Grandson to the Club.
His love for Minis is
overwhelming and he
is very keen to collect
all of the models that
have been produced
for the Club. This will
not be an easy task,
especially in finding his
Uncle’s rare Cadbury’s
Miglia which was only
produced in the very
small quantity of 300.
No he can’t have his
Grandad’s!
Hope to see you all at
Rockingham,
especially the two Corgi
cars......

THREE DROPPED SCORES
With 12 races planned
for the 2010 season
the committee have
taken the decision to
revert to 3 dropped
scores this season.
It was felt with the
economic
climate
and in a bid to open
up the championship
to more drivers, 3
dropped scores from
12 was the right decision.
This year each driver
will count nine race
scores towards their
championship total.

Thanks to the efforts of
Ralph Saunders the
Club will have its own
set of scales for the
2010 season. Ralph
has certificated the
scales.
Steve Burns
has suggested and
has given approval,
that the scales can be

to Ralph's awning} so
that Ralph can keep
an eye on them and
cars can be weighed
easily prior to racing.
After the race, Steve

cars that he wishes to
be weighed to this
same area, which will
then be deemed as a

Mini Sport Back Miglia Novice Champ
2009 Mini Miglia Novice Champion Dave
Drew has got his 2010
campaign off to a
flying start with backing from Mini Sport.
Dave, who took pole
position and a podium
finish in only his fourth
Miglia race, is over the
moon to have such a
prestigious name on
his car in only his second season of the
championship.
“Mini Sport is a name
that every Mini owner
knows and respects
and it is my privilege to
race with their support
in 2010,” he said. “Mini
Sport started business
in 1967, around the
same time as the Mini
7 Racing Club, and
today both are held
in the highest regard.
We have been working hard on the car
over the winter and
2010 promises to be a
great year for the
Dunlop Mini
Miglia
Challenge as it celebrate 40 years. There
are some top notch
drivers out there but
my goal is to stand on
the top step of the podium in this special
season and with the
help from Mini Sport
that goal is certainly
one step closer.”
Jonathan Harper from
Mini Sport said: “This is
a
groundbreaking
sponsorship deal for
us, one that
holds
great excitement and
anticipation for 2010.
Mini Sports DNA is in
motorsport, and over
the years our company colours have
adorned
many
Championship
winning Minis. Dave Drew
is a top bloke who's
professional
approach and presentation ticked all the
boxes for us, making it
a relatively easy decision to give our backing to him and break
into Mini Miglia Racing, in which historically Mini Sport have
never been involved.
This is a fantastic opportunity for us both
and we look forward
to a successful season
working closely with
Dave to achieve this.”

2010 CORGI CARS R OOF DESI GNS
Last month the two
cars that will be known
as the Corgi Cars for
2010 were announced
with Graeme Davis
and Niven Burge becoming the first of,
hopefully, a long line
of Corgi Cars on the
Mini Se7en and Mini
Miglia grids.
The two cars will carry
Corgi logos on the roof
of their cars and several designs were put
forward for approval.
Corgi have very strict
brand guidelines on
how their logo can be
used so it was felt that
a simple but effective
layout was called for.
The committee put
forward the design
below, which was approved.
A Look Back at
Niven and Graeme’s
cars will be seen on
track at Rockingham
on 10th April for the
opening round of the
2010 season.

Youngest Mini 7 Racing Club Member?
Is this the face of the
youngest member of
the Mini 7 Racing
Club? According to
Mike Jackson, he is the
youngest member to
join this year and Mike
should know.
His name is Jacob
Benzie and he lives in
Milton Keynes and he
is 4 years old. If you

you may see a young
Nick Cooke, which
isn’t
surprising
as
Jacob is Nick’s grandson.

PIT AND PADDOCK The Official Monthly Newsletter of the Mini 7 Racing Club
From The Archive - 1989 by Richard Williamson
As the Eighties came
to a close a landmark
event was the toppling of the Berlin Wall
and the opening of
links between East and
West.
At the same
time, Mini racing in the
UK remained pretty
much
as
it
had
throughout the decade; competitive action, busy grids and
ever-improving levels
of presentation, despite Unipart being a
year away from bringing
in
sponsorship
monies. Mini Miglias
ran with 1000cc engines, Se7ens with 850s
and steel rims. However a ‘green’ development 1000cc unit
running on unleaded
fuel was race-tested
towards the end of the
season with a view to
adoptions in the category.
History relates
those demos proved
successful….
One change was the
omission of the Southern Series for the first
time since its inception. The series had
traditionally
been
based upon visits to
Lydden, but the ownership of the 1-mile
Kent circuit was in the
protracted throes of
passing from its founder, the late Bill Chesson, to its current landlords, McLaren International. Just one invitational took place in
April, while two end-of
-season Winter Warmers at Brands Hatch in
November added to
the non-points scoring
events. An interesting
concept
of
these
Brands visits was the
‘Team Award’ where
the Miglias started 30seconds
after
the
Se7ens in a ‘pursuit’
race. The idea was
that over the course of
10-laps around the
Brands Indy bowl, the
leading cars in each
class would roughly be
on the same piece of
track.
Whichever
team had the best 10
finishin g
po sition s
would then share out
the £200 cash prize
between them. The
Se7ens won both, but
only just…
In the meantime, the
National Championship saw action over
15 rounds of which the
best 10 scores would
count. Back then it
was ‘only’ 10 points for
a win down to three
for eighth and two
points thereafter.
Mini Miglias 1989
Having finished third
the year before, Myk
Cable from Essex took
the first of three titles
with five wins. A hattrick began in March,
from
the
second
round at Snetterton
combined with the
Se7ens followed up at
Castle Combe a few
days later and then
Silverstone in April.
Thruxton
in
June,
again with the Se7ens,
saw the fourth win,
with an identical outcome at the October
Thruxton finale. Three
more podium finishes
saw him home by a
comfortable margin,
with Myk also starting
from pole the most
often.
Most Improved driver
in class, Ian Gunn took
the runners up spot,
scoring wins at Silverstone in May and later
Cadwell Park in July,
plus a second and
three thirds. The then
Competition Secretary
Gareth Mellin came
third with three victories to his credit, the
first at Outlon Park in
July, the day before
Cadwell, and mixed in
with the Northernbased XR Challenge,
and the August Brands
and October Pembrey meetings.
The
Welshman added a
pair of seconds too.
Peter Allen scored a
brace of wins at Snetterton in August and
later Castle Combe in
September, with a
quartet of thirds carrying him to fourth overall.
The Mini Miglia
Novice
Champion
was Eamonn Moran
who managed a couple of top eight finishes, while the best
turned out Miglia belonged to Richard Wager and was beautifully prepped by Ian
Pattison. Interestingly
there
were
more
Miglia runners than
Se7ens in 1989, with 63
in the 1000s compared to 56 in the 850
section.

Cooper began his
campaign with victory
at the Brands opener
in March. A trio of
wins mid-season at
Thruxton, Cadwell (in
sister Tina’s car after
he crashed at Oulton
the day before) and
Brands again put him
clear, with his fifth
coming
at
Castle
Combe in September.
Sis runner-up slots and
a third made it secure,
while
Steve
also
started from more Pole
slots and picked up
the Sevenoaks Cup.

Mini Se7ens 1989
After the previous season’s controversial outcome in which Steve
Cooper lost the title to
Malcolm Joyce due to
a ‘disputed incident’
exclusion, the Essex
mechanic made up
for his 1988 disappointment by clinching the
title in more relaxed
circumstances.
Five
victories
saw
him
emerge as not only
the Bob Fox Trophy
winner but also the
owner of a new Mini
30 from Austin Rover.
Awarded to the higher
points scoring Champion, the gift on
wheels was initially
known as the Car Mart
Trophy.
Having been trying for
well over a decade,
current
Membership
Secretary Mike Jackson came close again
with second overall.
Mike visited the podium five times before
his first win came at
Oulton Park in July,
following that up with
two more at Snetterton and Thruxton. Further reward was the ST
Trophy for the most
reliable car in either
category, with brother
Alan
wielding
the
spanners.
Sneaking
into third was Neil
Johnson, the Wellingbased BT engineer
scoring his maiden win
at Pembrey in October, with five thirds
also to add to his tally.
Pushed
down
to
fourth, Bill Sollis looked
like he was well on his
way to a first National
title with four early wins
on the trot, beginning
at Snetterton in round
two,
followed
by
Combe,
Silverstone
and the inaugural
Pembrey
meet
in
South Wales.
However a mid term glitch
and only one more
visit to the podium became an anti-climatic
season for the Kent
Firefighter,
despite
sharing the fastest
race lap tally with
Richard Wager.
The Novice Champion
was Bedfordshire pub
landlord Bill Boyle,
while the Best Prepared Se7en was the
Brownspeed example
driven by Paul Brown
