welcome
Head-Royce is such a special school.
The teachers are amazing. The families are supportive. And the kids? They come
out awfully impressive, don’t they?
We are honored to chair the auction together this year. This event is fun with a
purpose:
• to raise money for the continued development of our dedicated faculty; and
• to raise funds for scholarships that are vitally important to the diversity of our
school.
We also know that the auction is a fun way for all of us to connect with other
Head-Royce parents over great food, entertainment and conversation, all in
support of our school. Over the years, this auction event has raised over $1.1
million. Let’s make this another successful year!
Please browse through all of the items, bid high and bid often; and as you do so,
note the names of those generous businesses that have stepped up to support
our school. They deserve our support in return.
Pulling together this auction truly takes a village. We appreciate all of the
volunteers who have imagined and solicited new interesting donations, slaved
over beautiful class projects that will be cherished keepsakes, helped with
auction operations on the day of the event and so much more. So, thank you to
all of the volunteers, donors and underwriters for your generous support – this
festive community party could not have happened without you!
Your Auction Co-Chairs,
Jackie Dharmapalan (Mother of
Rachel, ‘20 and Natalie, ‘22)
Julie Kim-Beal (Mother of Ethan, ‘22)

January Morning by the Library
Add to your personal art
collection with this elegant
original painting depicting a
slice of life on the Head-Royce
campus. This 16” x 20’
impressionist oil painting by
award-winning Bay Area artist
Dorallen Davis showcases the
beauty and energy of the
Head-Royce campus. Dorallen
Davis is a masterful “Plein Air”
artist with a unique ability to
connect her work with her
natural surroundings.
Since 2006, she has been the Director, Teacher, and Co-Founder of the Marin Art
School, and Dorallen’s grand-daughter, Emma Onaga, is in the 6th grade at
Head-Royce. More of her work can be seen at dorallendavis.com.
Artist’s Statement:
“Painting for me is not a choice but a way of life. My journey has taught me that
seeing, and then translating what I see, is the real ‘truth’ in my painting. I want to
capture the moment when I first see and feel that glimmer of light on the
landscape. I truly love to paint from life. I am a colorist, and paint what I see and
feel.”

Dragonsleaf Orchard House Sonoma Getaway
Enjoy a 3-night weekend at special 3 bedroom/2 bath house* nestled in 80-acres
of rolling hills and vineyards in bucolic Bennett Valley, located between the
village of Glen Ellen and Santa Rosa.
Lovingly developed, this house has a
rustic elegance that combines a
respect for the natural environment
with beautiful architecture,
amenities and infrastructure. It
includes a cozy living space with
fireplace, kitchen, and a dining room
with 2 glass walls that fold away to
create an unobstructed al fresco
dining experience. At the end of the
day, soak in the outdoor hot tub—
clad with wood slats to look like a
wine vat—as you watch the sun set
over the vine-covered hills.
Fruit trees along the crushed granite
paths bear delicious persimmons, apples and figs, yours for the picking, and the
landscape is sprinkled with colorful flowering plants and native grasses. Round a
corner on your stroll, lit by soft outdoor lamps, and you encounter an outdoor
“room,” a rock-walled setting with a fire pit and a poured concrete seating area
with cushions. This sheltered space has a magnificent outlook to the east where
you can watch the moonrise that inspired novelist Jack London to name this
magical region “the Valley of the Moon.”
At the heart of the property is
a private lake, complete with
gravel beach, picnic deck and
a small lawn area where kids
can romp. Take a kayak or
rowboat to view the
waterfowl. A wooden float in
the middle of the lake lets
swimmers loll in the warm
rays of the sun and appreciate
the views from a different
perspective.

accommodate an additional 3 guests at a lower level of swankitude.

tours. It can’t. Think about it. This is a
show that regularly creates
outrageous messes and huge
explosions, mostly intentional.
In the name of science, of course.
But what’s this? Could you really be
part of a private tour of the
MythBusters set with Director Lauren
Williams?
Yep, if your bid wins, it’s not just
PLAUSIBLE, it’ll be awesome. (Of
course, if you bid too low, you’re
BUSTED…)
Some requirements: This private tour
for up to four must be redeemed
between 2/18/12 and 4/1/12 and must
be arranged with Director Lauren
Williams to ensure it does not conflict
with the shoot schedule of the show.

On August 30th, 2006, forty 5-yearolds set out on their first day of
kindergarten. Today these students
are ten and eleven year old 5thgraders. A few have left Head-Royce
School through the years. Others have
joined. Little did we all know this time
would pass so quickly.
This large 11 x 13 hardbound book of
photographs and writings tells the
story of these early school years. Each
child is represented in a 4-page
spread combining rich photography
and personal reflections from
schoolmates, teachers and others.
In this book you will also explore
fieldtrips, classrooms, class plays,
holidays, May Dances, the playground,
the 5th-grade promotion and events
that you may have missed through
the years! Perhaps it goes without
saying in a school community as
close-knit and strong as Head-Royce
that the friendships made in lower
school will endure. This book will be a
keepsake your child will be grateful to
re-read Through the Years!
Worth noting: this book will include
the 5th grade in its entirety.
Therefore, it will be delivered to
buyers in the summer of 2012.

Original Painting ‘Your
Blue Room’
Alison Trujillo (nee Epstein, HRS ‘97)
is a San Francisco-based artist and
educator. Her work draws upon the
rich variety and experiences of the
natural environment. She has also
worked and traveled extensively
throughout Spain and Latin America
and these moments inspire much of
her subject matter and color choices.
Alison’s paintings explore form and
color. She will often simplify the shape
and line of everyday objects, an
appreciation of the small details that
surround us each day. New ideas for
work come from observing and
sketching plants while hiking,
botanical illustrations, and the photos
she takes around the city and in
nature. Different colors than seen in
the natural world are an exploration
of the feelings that may arise when
seeing a familiar object in a new light;
color is also a way to express emotion
about a particular place or
experience. Alison currently paints
primarily with acrylics and encaustics,
including this piece.

‘Hard Matter’ Bird
Sculpture: Bird ‘A’
Artist’s Proof Limited
Edition Print of Pink
Hyacinth
HRS art teacher Ann Murphy sees the
world with an artist’s eyes. ‘Hard
Matter’ was originally an installation of
28 cormorants constructed of
armature wire, paper, and wallpaper
paste. Each bird is approximately 24”
tall.
Artist’s statement: “This piece of art is
about observation and environment. I
had the privilege of living on a boat in
the Connecticut River for five
summers. During this time, I became
very intimate with the wildlife and
rhythms of a river in summer. I was
especially drawn to birds and
cormorants, in particular. Cormorants
are survivors. They fish, they swim,
they fight, and miraculously, they dry
their wings in the sun. I was struck
over and over again by how birdlike
we humans are and how our own
peculiar habits inform who we are.”

Win this item and you will get twelve
home-cooked meals delivered to your
family. One per month. These meals
will be prepared for you by HRS
parents who have signed up to do
this.
At one level, you might think of this as
a subscription for meal service, which
is certainly convenient. Maybe you’ve
had a long week. Or you just want a
night off from cooking. This way you
don’t have to plan the meal, or shop
for it, or cook it. That’s pretty nice.
At an entirely different level, though,
this is a psychology experiment. Each
of these chefs is only signing up to
prepare ONE meal for you this year.
Do you think many of these people
are going to “phone it in?” This is
Head-Royce, after all! How many of
these parent-chefs do you imagine
have a teeny competitive streak?
Do not underbid this item! If you do,

Kepler's Dream is the story of elevenyear-old Ella's long hot summer with
her eccentric grandmother, and her
efforts to understand mysterious
events in her family's past that
emerge after the disappearance of a
very rare and precious book.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Michael
Chabon writes, "Kepler's Dream is a
sweet, funny, and moving story told
by a memorable heroine. I can't wait
to share it with my daughters."
Blue Balliett, author of Chasing
Vermeer and other bestselling titles,
describes the book as follows: "Start
with a lonely, eleven year-old girl, a
summer visit with an icy grandmother
who dislikes hugs and sloppy
grammar, and an old Albuquerque
home surrounded by dozens of
peacocks. . . Kepler's Dream is heartwarming, prickly, pleasingly puzzling,

• Fourth, the sessions produce
"extra" individual portraits.
Because Bob keeps the session fun
and takes some silly (as well as
serious) pictures, parents are using
the "outtakes" for individual
portraits or to make separate
"many moods of" composites of
each child. This item includes up to
20 edited "outtakes."
Bob Blackburn is fine art
photographer and a Head-Royce
parent. His passion for portrait
photography grew from his candid
portraits in the street genre, several of
which have been widely exhibited in
juried shows, including a "best of the
Bay Area emerging artists" show at
the California Modern Art Gallery in
SF, best of the East Bay ProArts
Annual show (all media), and several
Reflections in Time shows at the
Joyce Gordon Gallery, including the
juror's award from the curator of
Armand Hammer Museum in LA. Bob
has twice studied with noted LA
portrait photographer Greg Gorman.
He is currently in an advanced postgraduate program at the San
Francisco Studio School.
Printing is not included in this item.
However, Bob can arrange to have
your portraits professionally printed
at cost with no mark-up. For example,
30x10 prints (on display at the
auction) can be had for about $35 on

Blackburn Composite
Family Photo, plus
outtakes
Win this item and Bob Blackburn will
create your family’s best-ever family
portrait.
Bob uses a composite approach for
his portrait art. Win this item and he
will individually photograph up to six
family members, then create a
composite group shot from the best
material. The final composite is in a
panorama format where the
individuals look as if they were
standing or sitting shoulder-toshoulder.
Bob highlights several advantages to
this approach.
• First, everyone is optimally lit,
which is critical to achieving the
best possible portrait.
• Second, everyone's best shot is
used. Everyone looks relaxed and at
their best.
• Third, people don't have to be there
on the same day. Included in this

sittings, full editing and composite
construction.

90-93 points Robert Parker: “The
2007 Grand Reserve Cabernet
Sauvignon is superb. Dense creme de
cassis notes intermixed with fruitcake,
coffee bean, and tobacco leaf are
found in this fat, fleshy wine, which
displays excellent purity, density, and
richness. It should drink well for 15 or
more years.”

Cabernet, rich and complex and full

Highland Single Malt,
Single Cask Scotch
Whiskey
A partnership between the Bacchus
Management Group (Spruce, Cafe Des
Amis, Village Pub, Mayfield Bakery &
Cafe, Pizza Antica) and Glenfarcas
Distillery (est. 1865), The Bacchus
Partners Reserve is a Highland single
malt, single cask scotch whiskey.
Unlike other single malt scotches,
which are blended together to
produce a house style that can be
repeated year after year, bottling just
one cask allows them to find only the
very best that a distillery has to offer.
Bacchus Partners Reserve was bottled
at cask strength from a second-fill
sherry butt, which helps the scotch
open up and makes the whiskey “rich,
full-bodied, and assertive". This
scotch has a long, sweet sherry finish
with honey and heather notes that are
typical of the Speyside region.
