A Well-Known Author Has Used Rocket
Folio/ NXT to Write or Co-Write More Than
15 Books
David Rensin is one of the most successful authors and collaborators working in the business today. He’s
written New York Times bestselling books with Tim Allen, Jeff Foxworthy, Chris Rock, and Yanni, as well as
bestsellers with Garry Shandling, WWII hero Louis Zamperini, and legendary Hollywood manager Bernie
Brillstein. Rensin’s own book The Mailroom, an oral history/sociology of what it's like to start at the bottom
in a talent agency mailroom, is required reading in mailrooms and boardrooms throughout Hollywood.
"Writing any book, whether collaborating or alone, is hard work," says David Rensin. He should know: he
has collaborated with the famous—and infamous—including co-authoring the smash success DON’T
STAND TOO CLOSE TO A NAKED MAN with actor/comedian Tim Allen. Rensin's own 2008 book, All for a Few
Perfect Waves, is an impeccably researched and reported oral and narrative biography of Miki Dora, the
most notorious California surfer ever, the king of Malibu when Malibu was queen. This story reveals not
only one rebel’s purposefully enigmatic life, but also the overnight explosive growth of both a sport and
post-WWII California itself. Vanity Fair praised the book, saying that, "Until now enigmatic surfer legend
Miki Dora's history was written only in water, but David Rensin's primo All for a Few Perfect Waves catches
the life of this charismatic renegade."
"When you're writing non-fiction accuracy is crucial," Rensin says. “That means amassing a daunting
amount of research in addition to interviewing many, many people. The result is literally thousands of
pages of text that are taped, transcribed and then saved on my computer. Back in the 1980s I knew I
needed software to help me manage all of this information"
Rensin walked into a computer store in the San Fernando Valley and walked out with Folio Views. "I've
been using the same software, updating when a new version came out, for almost 30 years, and it has
been incredible. I wouldn't be able to write my books without Folio Views. Period. It completely changed
my life. Without Folio Views my family would no doubt have found me sleeping under a pile of pages. I
spent five years chasing the story of Miki Dora, and did 300 interviews. The Mailroom required 250. I
worked for two years with Bernie Brillstein. And so it goes. Finding the right quote or nugget of
information is literally like looking for a needle in a haystack. And to make things even more complex,
subjects often tell the same story several times. Then they want to know what they said. Folio lets me
access that information in a matter of seconds.”

"All books require a narrative flow, which means that I need to take thousands of pieces of information
and fit them together like a puzzle. Folio Views is incredibly versatile because it lets me find and use the
elements I need. Folio does so much, but as a basic user it’s scalability allows me to customize it for my
own needs. It’s perfect for what I do. It really is an invaluable information tool."
"I wouldn't be able to write
books without Folio Views.
Although Rensin has used Folio for every one of the books he's written, he remembers what life was like
before Folio. "Years ago I did a Playboy Interview with Dallas star Larry Hagman, the summer before the
Who Shot J.R. episode. We spent two weeks together. I recorded hours of interviews which were then
transcribed on a typewriter. I then had to make a chart on yellow legal pads, pointing to where we’d
discussed every topic, and then try to cobble it together into a cohesive conversation. It was a nightmare,
and that was only for a 10,000 word interview. There’s no way I could ever do a 100,000 words or more.
My motto is ‘Folio Views: Don’t go to the office without it.’ Folio Views changed everything for me."
Period. It made my work so
much easier. Without Folio
Views I would have changed
jobs long ago."
