is a high-energy professional development opportunity designed for
educators who serve as advisers to yearbooks, newspapers and magazines.
We are always striving to make each year even better than
the last. This year, JAU is enhancing our popular curriculum
for high school advisers by introducing several courses
developed specifically for middle school teachers.
This teachers-only conference is designed to help you focus
on adviser strategy and methodology. This is your time to

grow and network with fellow high school, middle school,
junior high, and K-12 educators.

Beginner ( 1 ), Intermediate ( 2 ), and Advanced ( 3 ) level classes.

This year’s location is the brand-new Radisson

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and

About our Faculty
The Jostens Adviser University faculty features some of the most respected names
in scholastic journalism including textbook authors, college professors and past
recipients of the prestigious JEA National Yearbook Adviser of the Year honor.
Martha Akers
The 2005 JEA National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Akers has been advising the yearbook
and teaching photojournalism at Loudoun Valley High School, Purcellville, VA, for 32 years. The
Saga yearbook she advises is a frequent CSPA Gold Crown and NSPA Pacemaker winner. Akers
has received the CSPA Gold Key, NSPA Pioneer Award, VHSL Lifetime Achievement Award,
VHSL Torch Award and SIPA Distinguished Service Award.

Linda Drake
The 2008 JEA National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Drake has advised the yearbook for 32
years and the newspaper for 22 years at Chase County Jr.-Sr. High School in Cottonwood Falls,
KS, where she has taught for 40 years. Both the newspaper and yearbook are award-winning
publications. She has been named a DJNF Distinguished Adviser as well as receiving the JEA
Teacher Inspiration Award and the Medal of Merit Award and the CSPA Gold Key. Drake has also
served on the NSPA Board of Directors for six years and the JEA board for two years.
Mike McLean
A Dallas-based freelance photojournalist, McLean teaches photojournalism at high school
workshops and conferences throughout the nation. McLean was inducted into the Scholastic
Journalism Hall of Fame and has received the JEA Friends of Journalism Award. McLean served
on the team that produced Get the Picture, the Jostens photography curriculum. He also serves
on the planning committee for the Gloria Shields All-American Publications Workshop in Dallas.
Casey Nichols
The 2004 JEA National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Nichols has advised award-winning
publications at both the high school and middle school levels during his 25-year teaching career.
The Tonitrus yearbook Nichols advises at Rocklin High School, Rocklin, CA, is a frequent
CSPA Crown and NSPA Pacemaker winner. Nichols is a frequent speaker at conventions and
workshops across the country and has earned the NSPA Pioneer and JEA Medal of Merit.

Sarah Nichols
The 2010 JEA National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Nichols advises student media at Whitney
High School in Rocklin, CA. She is certified as a Master Journalism Educator and received a
Medal of Merit in 2010 from JEA as well as the NSPA Pioneer Award in 2008. During her 14 years
advising, her students have earned national recognition such as NSPA Pacemakers and CSPA
Gold Crowns. Nichols currently serves as JEA’s vice president.
Mary Patrick
Patrick has been a middle school teacher for 40 years and advising yearbooks for 25 of those
years. She is a past Distinguished Adviser for the Journalism Education Association. Her books
have earned NSPA Pacemaker awards, CSPA Gold Crown awards, and KSPA All-Kansas awards
as well as Gold Medalist and All-American critiques. The Maize South Middle yearbook is also
an inductee in the Yearbook Hall of Fame.
Cindy Todd
The 2012 National Yearbook Adviser of the Year, Todd advises the El Paisano yearbook and
teaches photojournalism at Westlake High School in Austin, TX. In her 22 years of advising, her
students’ publications have earned
1 top awards from NSPA, CSPA, TAJE and ILPC. Todd was
named a Distinguished Yearbook Adviser by the Journalism Education Association and is a
recipient of the TAJE Trailblazer, Edith Fox King and Max R. Haddick Texas Teacher of the Year
awards.

Academic Credit Opportunities
Jostens Adviser University participants may enroll in one of two optional academic
credit opportunities. Costs and requirements are outlined below. Please note these
costs are in addition to the workshop registration fee. Upon processing of your
workshop registration, Jostens provides enrolled participants with registration
information and course requirements.
