Next Act! New Play Summit 2. It’s your chance to experience bold
new works by the freshest, most exciting playwrights in America.
Capital Repertory Theatre is committed to fostering the creation of
new plays and musicals, and with Next Act!, you become part of the
process.
We invite you into the writer’s room to experience the heat of
creativity—new ideas, new stories, new forms. Next Act! readings
are produced in a simple concert style, with actors at music stands,
facing the audience and breathing life into the page. Be there for the
birth of something big. “Build” the set of your dreams, “design” the
costumes, “direct” the script in your head.
From “THE FIRST 15” to THE THING ABOUT TIME, the only limit
is your own imagination.
The Summit also seeks to highlight works that reflect the values and
changes that accompany the growth of Upstate New York’s Tech
Valley. The three main entries were chosen from more than 250
submissions!
Hope Villanueva’s PACIFIC is a multi-media examination of the impact
of technology on connecting and disconnecting six individuals from
across the world in the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami that rocked
Japan’s nuclear power plants.

Sherry Kramer’s comedy, HOW WATER BEHAVES, chronicles the
hilarious woes of a young unemployed couple, who respond to their
overzealous gift-giving families by pretending to donate money in
everyone’s name to a fictitious charity with global consequences.
And Jake Holmes and David Buskin’s rock musical, THE THING
ABOUT TIME, reunites five old friends, moving into middle age,
who come together to honor their comrade Clifford, whose remains
have been discovered forty years after he fell in Vietnam. Everyone
shows up to share and reveal some long held secrets—including
Clifford’s ghost.
In addition to the readings, the three-day summit includes special
daytime events designed to shed light on new play development.
Among these events will be a reprise of last year’s much-loved event,
THE FIRST 15—featuring readings and discussions of the first 15
minutes of five diverse submissions.
Featured this year are: Joshua Rebell’s FANTASY GIRL, Terence
Patrick Hughes’ ALL QUIET, Ira David Wood III’s DARK GLASS,
Sheri Graubert’s MILK A COW’S TAIL and Aleks Merilo’s EXIT 27.
A new addition to the Summit, SECOND LOOK, will feature a
reading of one of the semi-finalist plays from last year (John Fiorillo’s
DANCING BACKWARDS) that has gone on to receive significant
attention and further development.
There will be ample time for discussion following many events.
Next Act! New Play Summit 2 is sponsored by TD Bank, and is made
possible in part by a legacy gift from Samson O.A. Ullmann, professor
of English at Union College, 1957-1992.
