Fall 2006 - Alpha Gamma Rho
Alpha Gamma Rho Fall 2006 www.mizzouagr.com University of Missouri Theta Crescent NOBLE RULER’S REPORT Hello Brothers of Theta Chapter, I hope this newest issue finds you well. Our summer has come to a close and we’re getting back into the swing of the great system we know as the University of Missouri. We have a number of exciting things to tell you all. The first of which I’m sure you’ll hear a lot about. Four brothers made their way to the National Convention in Breckenridge, Colorado. I believe I speak for my fellow brothers that attended when I say that it was a great time. It was a very valuable and remarkable experience as we were able to meet new brothers from all over the nation. Also, as you’ll read in another article in this issue, we managed to secure several awards including the Maynard H. Coe Chapter Efficiency Award, the highest award given. I am so proud of this chapter and everything we’ve accomplished, and I sincerely cannot wait to see what lies ahead. The semester has already kicked off to a very active but great start. We intend to keep that momentum going throughout the semester and the year. Another great generation of new members has been added to this chapter and I am very excited about this new class. I see great potential in their character and their motivations. They are off to a great start and I have no doubt that they’ll keep exceeding expectations. Brother Travis Heman has done a great job in recruiting these new gentlemen. On September 5th we welcomed Brother Josh Wackler to our chapter. He came to help implement our new strategic recruiting plan. It is based around the theory that new members can be recruited year round. We are in the process of planning several events which will provide new opportunities to gain new members throughout the year. Again, if you know any potential members please pass their contact information along to us. As always please feel free to stop by and see us sometime at 602 S. College Ave. Fraternally, Ross Pierson When It Come to Brotherhood….Chillicothe Area Alumni Heat It Up! What’s Inside... The heat of mid July did not keep AgRho Brothers, their families and friends from attending the Chillicothe Burger Night. For the second year, this family oriented event was held at Brother Larry Warren’s airplane hanger, adjacent to the Livingston County Fair Grounds. The sixty plus crowd included alumni from Mizzou, Truman State, and NWMS; undergraduates; recruits; and of course, their families. The burger night menu expanded to include great grilled pork chops, homegrown watermelon, and other culinary treats! Alumni Spotlight . . . Everyone who braved the 100 plus temperature enjoyed a grand evening of conversation and reminiscing. As always, put a few AGRs together and the tall tales of collegiate days abound! Before the evening adjourned, Brother Jim Grozinger announced that he has arranged for next year’s event to the held at the Litton Agricultural Center…the air conditioned Litton Agricultural Center! Thanks to Sue and Larry Warren, our host for the evening. Popp/McBee Memorial Trap Shoot... Pig Roast Precedes Pigskin Premier... Homecoming... Founders Day... National Convention.. Maynard Coe Chapter Efficiency Award... Lost Alumni... New Members... Upcoming Events... Alumni Spotlight He is the man who everyone knows. He is present at virtually every alumni function and some brotherhood events as well. Every undergraduate knows who he is whether or not they have ever met the man. His contribution to Theta Chapter is surpassed by none and matched by few. His name is Steve Ellis, and he is the newest initiate into the Theta Chapter Hall of Fame. It seems like everyone from Theta Chapter in the last 30 years has a Steve Ellis story, and it is for that reason that Brother Ellis was chosen by the chapter to become a member of the Chapter Hall of Fame. To write about Steve’s history in AGR would not do justice. To speak of his accomplishments would seem hollow. The legacy that Steve Ellis is leaving on Theta Chapter and AGR as a whole is his service. Since the time he was an undergraduate, Steve Ellis has come up with countless ways to make this fraternity better. When it comes to commitment to Alpha Gamma Rho, Brother Ellis sets the example and leads the way in helping the alumni of Theta Chapter to make better men, and giving more men the possibility to be a part of this fraternity. Pig Roast Precedes Pigskin Premier Thanks to the time and generosity of three alumni, Theta Chapter had a great kickoff tailgate to begin the 2006 Tiger Football Season. Prior to the opening game against Murray State University, Alumni, undergrads and their guest gathered in Parking Lot G behind Faurot Field to enjoy a Pig Roast. Brother Doug Thomas and his wife Pat provided the roasted pig, complete with an apple in its mouth! Brother David Minnick and wife Nancy came up with parking spots, and Brother Steve Ellis helped out with the planning and transportation of the pig to Columbia on Game Day. Probably the most photographed pig in Missouri (total strangers stopped by to take a picture; some wanted to be photographed with the pig), it provided a great pregame meal for over 125 happy Mizzou tailgaters. Brotherhood was abundant and the excellent pig was followed by a shellacking with the pigskin by the Tigers over Murray State. Be on the lookout for more brotherhood/alumni events to come in the near future. Brother Doug Thomas and Brother Steve Ellis pose with the most popular guest at the Pig Roast Popp/McBee Memorial Trap Shoot Scheduled for November 5, 2006 The annual Popp/McBee Memorial Trap Shoot will be held at Cedar Creek Rod and Gun Club on November 5, 2006. We hope many alumni will save the date and attend. You don’t have to shoot; come meet the new collegiate members, visit with alumni and enjoy a fall day in the great outdoors. The undergrads will be there to prepare lunch. There will be a silent auction and a shot gun will be raffled. Proceeds from the event fund two scholarships for incoming CAFNR students. If you need more information, contact Josh Brandt, Brian Ehrich, or any Theta member (573)847-9061, or call Cedar Creek and get the details from our hosts, Mary Ann and George Gates. Mark Your Calendars... February 10, 2007 is the date selected for the 91st annual Theta Chapter Founder’s Day. Members from the Initiation Classes of 1957, 1982, and 1997 will be recognized. If you are a member of one of these groups, we hope you will make an added effort to attend this year’s event. If we can assist you with hotel reservations, or a place to gather on Friday or Saturday evening, please feel free to contact the VNR Alumni Relations Clint Munzlinger (660) 341-2728 or Mom Marty (573) 256-2557. Planned activities will include a continental breakfast at the Chapter House followed by initiation, and the annual business meeting. The day will conclude with a luncheon and awards program. Your evening will be free to gather with classmates and relive the “good old days!” Look for your invitation with details in early January! Brothers Involved... Homecoming Steering Committeee Members CAFNR Steering Committee Members Caleb Colbert, Service co-chair; Chris Smith, House Decorations co-chair; and James Tvrdy, Steering Committee TriDirector are one-tenth of the 2006 Homecoming Steering Committee. The University of Missouri started the tradition of Homecoming in 1911 when MU football coach and Director of Athletics Chester Brewer invited former students to “come home” to Columbia, Missouri for the annual football game between the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas. This tradition has spread throughout the world, but the University of Missouri still boosts the largest student run celebration in the nation. We invite you to “come home” to Mizzou and AGR for the 2006 edition “Pride on the Prowl.” Come by the house for brunch before the Tigers take on Kansas State University at Faurot Field. For more information and pictures, check out their website: http://wwwmizzou.com/homecoming Jeff Chapuis, fundraising; Tyler Jones, activities; Chris Nation, Tri-Director, Ryan Neimeyer, activities; Kyle Allen, contest; and Brant Mettler, contest have all assumed major leadership rolls in presenting the 2006 CAFNR Week festivities which will include, skit night at the Historic Missouri Theatre, games, community service, careers fair, and Barnwarming.
