Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will
have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil
and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku,
the numbers 1 through 9
must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column and
box. You can figure out
the order in which the
numbers will appear by
using the numeric clues
already provided in the
boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it
gets to solve the puzzle!

Creative Halloween Costume Ideas
(Family Features) Every Halloween,
many people look forward to participating in “frightful” festivities, such
as costume parties and contests, but
often wait until the last minute to
come up with a costume.
This usually leaves slim pickings
at party stores and costume shops
or a tossed together look. With a little planning and creativity, you can
avoid the scramble this year and create a classic Halloween costume using items you probably have at home,
or can easily and affordably find.
Easy DIY finds
Follow these tips and tricks – and
treat yourself to a costume that will
make this Halloween sweeter than
ever.
• Use it as a time to clean out your
closet. Those old, unused threads
might serve as the basis for a great
costume.
• On that note – don’t overlook
your “memories.” Pull out sports or
dance uniforms from your glory days
in high school and have an ensemble
ready.
• Crafting gear nearby? Great. It’s
easy to create a charming costume
with just scissors, glue and a little
bling.
Delightful dress-up ideas
Here are some examples of clever
costumes you can make at home.
Morton Salt Girl costume
Celebrate the Morton Salt Girl’s
100th birthday this year by sporting
her iconic look for Halloween. Once
you’re all dressed up you may want to
enter the Morton Salt Girl Halloween
Costume Contest and Sweepstakes at
www.MortonCostumeContest.com.
These are just a few of the items
you will need to bring this classic
look to life:
• Yellow dress
• White tights or stockings
• Yellow Mary Jane shoes
• An umbrella, preferably lavender,
white or clear
• A Morton Salt table salt canister to
tuck under your arm
Cowboy costume
Wrangle up some fun with your
very own cowboy costume. Here are
some of the elements you’ll need to
complete the look:
• Flannel shirt
• Leather pants or jeans
• Cowboy boots
• Cowboy hat
• Bandana
• A long rope
Ballerina costume
Consider twirling the night away
in a ballerina costume with these key
pieces:
• Camisole top or leotard
• Tutu or short flowy skirt
• Tights or stockings
• Flats or ballet shoes
So don’t be scared to create your
own Halloween costume. With a few
items from your closet and a little creativity, you can make a memorable
outfit perfect for any spooky celebration.
Easy Ways to Save This Halloween
(Family Features) As many families
with small children know, Halloween
is a highly anticipated holiday packed
with clever costumes, yummy candies
and spirited parties.
But for many parents, the costs associated with this much-loved occasion
can be downright frightful. In fact,
according to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend an average of $72 on Halloween this year,
which comes to $7 billion in spending
nationwide. With so many ghoulish
get-togethers taking place, many parents are looking for ways to stretch
their dollars without missing out on
any of the fun.
Scare up some savings
The money saving experts at Kmart,
the one-stop shop for Halloween family needs, offer these tips to help you
enjoy “More Thrills” this season.
Choose costumes with options. Going to several Halloween parties, but
don’t want to spend money on extra
costumes? Check out the new line
of costumes from Totally Ghoul that
offer 3-in-1 styles for girls. Available
at Kmart, your child can go from a
ballerina to a fairy to a princess for
the price of one costume. Kmart also
offers more than 5,000 costumes for
adults, kids and pets including looks
from your favorite movies such as
Frozen, Spiderman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Don’t forget about
the hats, gloves, masks, make-up and
other Halloween accessories you’ll
need to complete the look.
Save on ghostly gatherings. There are
many ways to celebrate without emptying your pocketbook. Invite friends
over for a Halloween potluck and encourage each guest to bring a dish to
share with a spooky name. Rent or
download classic horror films for an
after-dinner movie marathon everyone
will enjoy. Make sure your home is
adorned with the most fearsome decorations with light up pumpkins for the
porch, inflatables for the front yard and
ghoulish decals for the walls.
Shop from home. Save time and
avoid the headache of running around
town looking for the perfect costume
by shopping online. Some retailers,
such as Kmart, offer added convenience, allowing shoppers to browse
and purchase online, and then pick
up in-store for no additional fee. Let
your Halloween shopping fit into your
schedule and shop from the comfort of
your home, office, or on the road.
Trick or treat locally. Many parents
spend Halloween evening carting
children around to various locations
across town. Save gas money by only
allowing your little goblins to trick or
treat within your neighborhood. This
will help you get to know your neighbors and get a little exercise in, too.
Don’t leave home without the proper container for little ones to collect
candy, and for you to leave treats for
your own visitors. You can find these
decorative containers, candy and more
at Kmart, the one-stop shop for everything this season.
Safe Halloween Fun with Pets
(Family Features) Including pets in
your family’s Halloween festivities
can be a fun addition to your celebration. However, with all the excitement
comes the chance for pets to get into
danger or trouble. You can head off
potential problems and enjoy an evening of fun with some safety tips and
smart planning.
Keeping your pet away from candy
and other Halloween treats is especially important because so many favorites
include chocolate, which is potentially
toxic for dogs. It’s also an ideal time
to practice obedience commands with
your four-legged friends, as crowds of
unfamiliar people, costumes and lots
of open doors can create temptations
too hard to resist.
To include your furry family members while still keeping them safe
during the fun, follow this advice from
the pet experts at PetSmart:
Trick-or-treating together
• Before hitting the streets, make
sure your dog is socialized around
kids, adults and other animals.
• Bring water and treats such as
crunchy Blue Buffalo Boo Bars to reward your dog for good behavior and
reduce the desire to go for kids’ candy.
• Increase nighttime visibility with
LED leashes, collars or harnesses, or
look for the light-up Halloween outfits
available at PetSmart this year.
Pawsitively good party manners
• Before guests arrive, practice
“leave it” or a similar command. This
is useful to help pets avoid candy or
food they might encounter on the
ground. Trainers can help you get it
down right.
• Establish a rule that guests don’t
feed the dog – candy or human food.
A new interactive toy or long-lasting
rawhide may keep your pup busy and
out of temptation’s way. Many ingredients commonly found in Halloween
candy can be harmful to your pet. For
example, xylitol, found in gum and
candy can cause dangerously low
blood sugar or liver disease in dogs.
Chocolate can create a range of symp-

toms, from vomiting to abnormal heart
rhythm to death. Even snacks that are
healthy for humans, such as raisins can
cause a toxic reaction.
• Prevent your dog from running out
an open door by working on a “stay”
command. PetSmart’s expert trainer
Debbie McKnight explains how to
teach this trick: Ask your dog to sit,
and praise him when he obeys. While
your dog is sitting, say “stay” and
place your hand flat with your palm
facing the dog. Wait 2-3 seconds then
give your dog a treat. You can increase
the time he stays by a couple of seconds every three repetitions, working
up to 30 seconds.
• If you aren’t confident about your
dog’s abilities, keep him on a leash
while the doorbell is ringing.
Costume comfort and safety
• A costume should never constrain
or bother your pet. If your pet isn’t
comfortable, try a strap-on costume
that attaches loosely with snaps or
around the pet, or find other ways to
look festive such as Pet Expressions,
available in the PetSmart grooming
salon.
• Once a costume fits properly, make
sure your pet won’t trip on anything
like a cape or ribbon. Check for little parts within chewing distance and
keep identification tags on collars.
• Throughout the evening, watch
your pet and make adjustments as
needed. You may need to cut or remove portions of the costume to
increase a pet’s comfort. The most
important part of the evening is your
pet’s safety.
