Temperatures - Soil temperatures
in August and September are among
the highest of the year, allowing
grass seed to germinate quickly in
comparison to spring seedings. When
Fall rolls around, we see a drop in
air temperature as winter weather
approaches. Some of the most ideal
grass growing temperatures are experienced in September and October.
Competition - Fall seedings don’t face the huge amount of competition from
annual grasses and broadleaf weeds that they do in the springtime, making fall seed
establishment faster and easier.

Green Velvet had the recent
opportunity to provide the
turfgrass for the soccer
match between Inter Milan
and Chelsea FC at Lucas Oil
Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.
Our production team
spearheaded the project, working closely with the Motz Group to cut 96,000 sq ft of low
mow Kentucky Bluegrass sod. That’s over 400 rolls of beautiful, thick cut premium turfgrass!
Our drivers hauled truckload after truckload across
state borders to their destination directly beneath
the stadium. Lucas Oil is a fairly new venue,
opening in 2008 to replace the RCA Dome as the
new home for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. It was
quite the experience to see, firsthand, what an
indoor stadium jobsite looks like in the midst of
pepping stages for such a prestigious event. We
are proud to have been a part of this soccer starstudded success!

Moisture- Fall seedings enjoy the fact that
our days get shorter and the moisture from
Mother Nature and irrigation remains in the
soil for a longer period of time. Just the
opposite is happening in the spring with
its longer, hotter days.
Important Reminder - Make sure to get
your Turf Type Tall Fescue seedings planted
EARLY (well before October 1st)! Tall
Fescues are wimps as a young plant! They’ll
still germinate when planted in October,
but they often won’t mature enough to
withstand the hard freeze that we see in
early November. Many October plantings
of Tall Fescue have to be re-done in the
spring.
Feed the Baby! Apply Green Velvet’s
14-21-5 Seed Starter Fertilizer when
planting your grass seed. On our farm, we
incorporate the starter fertilizer into the
soil when we plant and re-apply again 4-5
weeks after germination. This gives the
plant everything it needs to get properly
