At a recent program showcasing the number
of women rabbis in St Louis, the last question
asked was something about being a feminist.
“Militant,” I answered. “As long as there are
young women being trafficked here and girls
being shot and kidnapped around the world for
wanting to go to school, I commit to seeing the
world through a feminist lens that works for
equal rights and a leveled playing field for all
women and girls.” We have a long way to go.
The following were my opening remarks:
In 1972 Betty Friedan looked straight at
me and said. “and I suppose you will be a
rabbi!” “Not me!” I replied defiantly, “a
token in a patriarchal profession? Never!”
And God laughed. Or maybe it was Sarah
who laughed, again.
I come from a long line of Sarahs.
I was my grandmother Sarika’s favorite.
February 14
Once she was dying in a N.Y. hospital when
I was in rabbinical school at HUC. The
nurses called and I rushed across town to
be there to say the final prayers. I wanted
to hold her as she went from this world to
the next.
February 21
When I got there she was sitting up in bed
bright eyed with red ribbons tied to her hair.
“Susika, get me a rabbi! I had a miracle!”
February 28
“I am a rabbi, Nona,” I said, and she
laughed.

The miracle was that my grandfather had
come to her from the next world and told
her he wasn’t ready for her and to get better. She did and ten years later she lived to
hold my daughter, Sarika, her namesake, in
her arms and like Sarah did so long ago my
Nona Sarika laughed and said like the first
Sarah, “I have a child at 90!” When she
died the family wanted a ‘real rabbi.’ But
even the orthodox, Sephardic, ‘real’ rabbi
could feel our bond and after my eulogy,
when it was time for kaddish, he nodded
to me, and I led her people in our ancient
prayer of holy chutzpah that says that in
the face of death we choose life. I felt the
paradigm shift that day and I felt God’s
sweet smile.
When I finally found my way to rabbinical
school it was to deepen in my own spiritual
program so that I would have the tools to
change the world. My rabbi growing up in
N.Y. was a man named Michael Robinson.
He was one of the rabbis challenged by Dr.
King in the early sixties to show up. He was
arrested in St. Augustine for integrating a
lunch counter and marched in Selma for
economic and racial justice. His life was
dedicated to justice, by speaking up and
showing up and changing the paradigm
using everything he had; his privilege, his
Torah, and the Jewish story he carried in
his bones. I knew that I wanted to do that
too, though I never imagined that it would
ever be as a rabbi. “Not me!” And God
laughed.
It has been almost 40 years since I began
this journey and I wouldn’t change any
of it. I met my basherte the first day of
rabbinical school in Jerusalem and
together we have 3 adult children (and
a daughter-in-law) who take our breath
away and know that they come first.
I am part of a congregation that
created a work place that shares a feminist
egalitarian vision that supports me as a
working mother, and that values complete
inclusivity, radical hospitality, and the

possibility of the awakening of compassion in everything, absolutely everything,
that we do. As a woman and as a rabbi I have had the opportunity to build
relationships with so many of you over these past 34 years and together we have
bent the arc toward justice for women, for the gay lesbian and transgender
community, and for our black and brown sisters and brothers both Jewish and
non-Jewish alike. We have shared the joy of Shabbat with music and dance and
learning to renew our souls and keep hope alive as we dive into the Torah text week
after week balancing the mystery with the meaning. Together we bring the voices
of my silent sisters in the texts and in the white fire to life.
As a liberal Jew I will admit that I often take the wiggle room built into the tradition
if it serves the people. Especially if it will bring healing and restore hope. I’ll never
forget when I used to bring groups of women to the mikvah for different life cycle
events and we would immerse together. I remember once Mrs. Pearl z’l called Rabbi
Rivkin z’l to ask what to do with me and he said, “Rabbi Talve brings women to the
mikvah. Don’t tell me the details!”
When my mother died, my three sisters and I did her tahara ourselves. It was what
she wanted and as a rabbi my sisters trusted me and it helped us so much.
And for all the holy opportunities I have had out there on the street as a rabbi, I am
so grateful that I have a place in this moment in history. Dr. King said, “ I am a
man,” today we say “I am Mike Brown,” and “Je Suis Charlie.” This is pure Torah;
love the stranger so that there will be no more stranger. Until all are free, no one is
free. Torah demands that we change the paradigm to change the world.
I have learned that the most important moments I have had as a rabbi are the
stories no one will ever know. These are the times that you have invited me into
your homes and hearts. The richest part of this work that I had no idea about is
this: In rabbinical school I was told that I would never have friends in the
congregation and that I should stay detached. As a woman, though I’m not sure it
is just as a woman, I could not survive that way. My heart breaks with every family.
I do know what is about me and what is not, but when you invite me in, I feel your
pain and your joy and I fall in love with every family that lets me be a part of their
lives and together we use this brilliant tradition to guide us through the most
tender of times.
So I stand here today with wonderful women serving this community. With Andrea
from Shaare Emeth whose bat mitzvah I was at so many years ago, with Maharat
Rori from Bais Abraham, and with our Deana who is my daughter’s age and like
my daughters will do so much better than me because these women are no longer
tokens in a patriarchal profession. They have changed the paradigm and are
changing the world and will continue to awaken compassion and with that holy
chutzpah of Jewish women who did their part in the midbar, they, too, will bring us
closer to the promised land.

Celebrate Rabbi Deana’s Welcome Blessing and Join us for
an Amazing Weekend of Learning
Please join us for a very special spiritual enrichment weekend honoring Rabbi
Deana and featuring Divrei Torah by Rabbi Doctor Rachel Adler. The schedule of
events is as follows:
Friday, February 27, 7:30 pm - Kabbalat Shabbat Service and
Welcome Blessing for Rabbi Deana Sussman
Seeking Gender Justice in an Increasingly Complex World - We are taught
that there are two genders. Ancient Judaism thought there were four,
possibly five. However you count, some people today are not adequately described
as male or female. How can we understand? How can we help to make gender
justice in an increasingly complex world?
Special Oneg to follow service.
Saturday, February 28, 10:00 am - Shabbat Services
When Men Light Shabbat Candles and Women Wrap Teffilin: Building Inclusive Rituals
Are we headed for a world where everyone is exactly alike? Or can ritual help us
make sacred occasions for diverse people and frame their joys, fears, and griefs in
ways appropriate to the people they are?
Saturday, February 28, 6:30 pm - Havdalah/Dinner at a Private Home
Dinner and Dialogue: Using our Tradition to Heal our Community - The first
recorded lament for a destroyed city was written about 2,000 BCE for the Sumerian
city of Ur, probably by a priestess of the city’s goddess Ningal. The biblical book of
Lamentations belongs to this tradition. Laments are ubiquitous in cultures around
the globe and to this very day. There are funeral laments for individuals, laments on
sickness and despair, laments on fallen cities. What makes lament such a long-lived
human genre? What good does lament do us? I will argue that lament, which is so
hard to do and so hard to hear, is the first step in reconstructing a broken universe.

Your Mother, Your Rabbi, Your Congressperson, Your CEO: Why We Still Need Feminism
More Than Ever - What is feminism, really? How has feminism shaped our past as
Jews and as Americans? What symptoms show that here and world wide, the task
feminism set out to accomplish is still unfinished?

Who is Rachel Adler?
Rabbi Rachel Adler, Ph.D is a close
mentor and friend to Rabbi Deana.
Rabbi Deana had the opportunity
to study with Professor Adler, who
also served as her thesis advisor,
throughout rabbinical school. She is
thrilled to welcome her to the CRC
community!
Rabbi Adler, is the David Ellenson
Professor of Modern Jewish Thought
and Feminist Studies at Hebrew
Union College of Los Angeles. She
was one of the first theologians to
integrate feminist perspectives and
concerns into the interpretation
of Jewish texts and the renewal of
Jewish law and ethics. Her
essay “The Jew Who Wasn’t There,”
first published in 1971, is generally
considered the first piece of Jewish
feminist theology.
Professor
Adler’s
academic
credentials include a Ph.D. in
Religion and Social Ethics from the
University of Southern California
with a conjoint certificate in Judaica from Hebrew Union College,
an M.A. in English Literature from
Northwestern University, and a
Masters degree in Social Work from
the University of Minnesota. She
was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew
Union College in Spring 2012.

I get up everyday and thank God that I
became a rabbi and that I am a woman
and together with God and Sarah and
my grandmothers and my mother and
all the women and men upon whose
shoulders I stand, we smile and we
laugh because we know from the Torah
when God tells us her name, “ehyeh
asher ehyeh”, “I will be what I will be”
-there is hope in this moment that we
will go from “je suis ,” “I am.” to what
we can become. For we are becoming.
We are not done. We are becoming.
Please join us as we welcome Rabbi Rachel
Adler, Rabbi Deana’s teacher, who will be
our scholar in residence for our Spiritual
Enrichment Weekend February 27 - March
1. Rabbi Adler is a true feminist scholar
who will help us move into the next
paradigm of a more inclusive community
and a more healing path for all.
February University Series
with Rabbi Susan - Judaism’s
Big Ideas for Everyday Living
Tuesdays in February, 7:00 pm
What does it mean when we say that
we are “One,” or that we are “In the
Image of God.” Where do halacha,
(Jewish law) and teshuvah and tikkun
olam fit into our lives as progressive
Jews?
Join Rabbi Susan in an exploration of
the ideas that continue to shape us as a
people and challenge us to know who
we are that we can better determine
where we are going as individuals, as a
community and as part of the human
family.
Materials will be distributed in class.

We will continue reading the Book of
Joshua, primarily in English, with

We hope to see all of you there!
Friday Tanakh Study
In Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s book, he asks,
“Do the Hebrew prophets matter.” If
you answer, “yes,” it places you in direct
conversation with them. It allows the
prophets to speak directly to you about
your life right here, right now.
The Books of Joshua and Judges tell us of
the fulfillment of Adonai’s Promise
made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
that their descendants would have possession of the Land. Joshua is the continued story of the fulfillment of the
Covenant between Adonai and the
Israelites.
If you’re thinking about joining our
study and journey…this is a great time!
No need to RSVP…you are always
welcome. If you have any questions,
please contact Maggie Duwe at

February Social Responsibility Shabbat
Friday, February 13 , 7:30 pm
We know that we are beginning to sound like a broken record, but there is a palpable sense of urgency by our coalition partners
regarding Medicaid expansion. Eligibility for Medicaid is so low in Missouri that there are hundreds of thousands of people who
don’t qualify. They are in the Coverage Gap—too rich for Medicaid, but too poor for the Marketplace—with no way to get
affordable insurance. Expanding Medicaid will help nearly 300,000 uninsured Missourians gain access to healthcare and save
700 lives every year. Expansion will also create jobs and bring Missouri taxpayer money BACK to Missouri. Failing to fully
expand Medicaid would be catastrophic for Missouri.
For our February Social Responsibility Shabbat, we will hear from an amazing member of our coalition. Sarah Lewis is
Metropolitan Congregation United’s (MCU) Regional Health Organizer for St. Charles County organizing a grassroots movement
close the coverage gap and expand Medicaid in 2015. Sarah grew up in Los Angeles where both her parents are physicians at a
large public hospital, serving mostly undocumented and uninsured patients. She attended UC Berkeley for her undergrad, then
moved to St. Louis in 2013 to do the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs through FOCUS St. Louis. She has worked with the Missouri
Foundation for Health, St. Louis Regional Health Commission, Missouri Health Care for All, and St. Louis Effort for AIDS during
her time in St. Louis and never tires of talking about health care issues.
Are you interested in joining us for Medicaid expansion lobby days and actions? If so, or if you have any further questions,
please contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext. 117 or jenniferb@centralreformorg.
West Lake/Bridgeton
Landfill Community Meeting
Thursday, February 19, 6:30 pm at 3449 Hollenburg Dr, Bridgeton, 63044
Many who attended January’s Social
Responsibility Shabbat service have
expressed interest in getting more
involved in the West Lake Landfill issue.
Here is your chance to learn more and
get involved! This is a monthly meeting
hosted by the community activists to
raise awareness and educate the public
about the issue. If you are interested in
attending, please contact Jennifer
Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext. 117 or
[email protected].
No More Trash Talking at
CRC - We are Moving Toward
100% Recycling!
According to the EPA, the national
recycling rate is just 30%. Increasing
materials recycling in the US to even just
60% could save the equivalent of 315
million barrels of oil per year. Recycling
is a great way individuals can make a
difference, both locally and globally.
And at CRC, we are working on an
initiative to aim for 100% recycling, as
well as a composting program. Very few
items are really trash, so a majority of
our receptacles at CRC will soon be for
recycling or composting. Keep a look out
in the upcoming weeks for signage
around the building and more
information. Let’s all do our part to help
the environment! If you want to help
with this initiative, please contact
Wendy Bell at (314) 361-1564, ext. 104 or

Sunday, February 1, 10:30 am - 12:30
pm, CRC Multipurpose Room
The only thing you know for sure about
Purim night at CRC is that one way or

story of intrigue and valor in the Book of
Esther. Other than that, all bets are off!
Feel free to dress in costume, cheer and

Join us as we walk the path with Rabbi
Randy (so to speak). Rabbi Randy will
discuss the personal journey that led
him to the rabbinate, and to CRC.
He will also reflect on his years at
CRC, and experiences he has had in
working along with our neighboring
congregations in the struggle for social
justice.
He will then lead us in
a discussion of how CRC, in the
aftermath of Ferguson, might play an
active and meaningful role in helping to
inspire and influence the broader St.

Black Rep Theater
Performance of “Anne &
Emmett”
Monday, February 16, 7:00 pm at CRC
This is not to be missed! Anne &Emmett is
an imaginary conversation between
Anne Frank & Emmett Till, both victims
of racial intolerance and hatred. Frank
is the 13-year-old Jewish girl whose diary
provided a gripping perspective of the
Holocaust. Till is the 14-year-old AfricanAmerican b
oy whose brutal murder in
Mississippi sparked the American Civil
Rights Movement.
The one-act play opens with the two
teenagers meeting in Memory, a place
that isolates t hem from the cruelty they
experienced during their lifetime.
The beyond-the-grave encounter draws
the startling similarities between the
two youths’ harrowing experiences and
the atrocities against them

Please bring your new and gently used
books appropriate for children in grades
PreK-5 to CRC! The drive will benefit the
children and parents enrolled in
Succeeding with Reading at Carver
Elementary School and Clay Elementary
School in St. Louis Public Schools. We are
also collecting books for the residents of
North Sarah, a mixed income
development in the Ville neighborhood
of North St. Louis. We are looking for
books for children ages 0-18.
Succeeding with Reading was developed
by CRC member, Josh Goldman. The
program is an evidence-based literacy
initiative that aims to inspire a love of
reading and build language skills in
low-income students that struggle with
literacy through whole group and small
group instruction. This program is one
of a number of initiatives by Urban
Strategies to promote comprehensive
community change. For the last 10 years,
the program has been successful in
inspiring a love of reading and
improving literacy achievement. It has
since grown into a national model. For
