When their nation asked, they answered the call as well. Their lives are challenged as they are taken in unexpected ways. From different backgrounds, they bond with one another and learn what love and sacrifice truly mean. I really enjoyed this book and I think you will also. No matter how many times these familiar stories are told, the Holy Spirit opens the listeners ears to new and wonderful insights. The children enjoy singing new and old praises to the Lord and always look forward to the crafts that help reinforce the theme of the day. Prayers for the children and their families are always appreciated! Jr. High District Youth Gathering March 5-6, 2016 Irvine, CA Reg. Deadline: Feb.7th The theme for this year’s Jr. High Gathering is “In The Beginning” based on Genesis 1-3. Speaker Laura Kuegele will guide us through the creation story. In her session we will see how God has made us and called us “good.” We will explore how we sin and how the relationship is broken with God, one another, and creation. Most importantly we will affirm the redemptive work of Christ on the cross and our promise of Salvation through faith in Jesus. We have been blessed with a growing youth ministry and with that comes new and exciting opportunities to get them involved in spreading the Gospel. One way to do that is participation in district youth events and the JYD is a good one! Our youth will have the opportunity to meet other youth facing similar situations as a tween and teen in an ever changing world. With the opportunities come also the costs to be a part of these events. If you would like to sponsor a youth contact the church and we will set that in motion. God’s blessings! The Desert Voice February 2016 Page 4 Lenten Series “Living Lent as People of the Resurrection” Beginning with Ash Wednesday February 10, 2016 @ 7:00 pm Ash Wednesday — Ponder • Luke 5:27-32 • Lent is a time to ponder our relationship with God and with one another, to discover the love of God seen in the cross and empty tomb. Week 1 — Purpose • Luke 19:1-10 • This season is a time to find God’s purpose for our lives, fulfilled in our redemption by Jesus, who seeks and saves the lost and gives us new life. Week 2 — People • John 10:14-18 • We are called to be among people in this world. People matter to God; he sent Jesus to save them. People should matter to us; we are sent to love them. Week 3 — Proclaim • 1 Peter 2:9-10 • To proclaim the story of Christ is to paint a picture of the God who seeks and embraces us. Our proclamation of the Savior brings faith to life. Week 4 — Praise • Psalm 34:1-10 • Even in the midst of sorrow, we are called to celebrate the love of God and the joy that can be found only in Christ crucified, who reigns in glory now. Week 5 — Pain • Luke 15:11-32 & 23:26-49 • The pain of rejection and the pain of a father when a son leaves are juxtaposed against the reckless love of God revealed in Jesus, who wipes every tear from our eyes. LENTEN POTLUCK SUPPERS 5:45 p.m. (No potluck on Ash Wednesday) Potluck suppers begin on Wednesday, February 17th at 5:45 pm. Www.TrinitIndio.org * [email protected] Page 7 From Your Stewardship Committee We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves us is never alone. That is because faith is a living, busy, and active thing. It inhales all of God’s riches in Christ and exhales this in love and service to the neighbor. But who is my neighbor? God in His mercy has placed us into three distinct communities: society, family, and the church. That means we have a duty to those around us in each of these communities. We pray for the people in these three communities daily. We rejoice with them in times of joy and suffer with them in times of sadness. And we give to them from the income that God provides as we are able and as they have need. So we pay taxes to our governments so that they may do the work that is needed for our neighbors in society. We give to our families so that they have food and clothing, house and home, even educations. And we give to our church—our local congregations—so that the gospel may be preached and the sacraments administered for us and others. The beauty of this is that God smiles upon all that giving. When you pay your taxes, God is pleased that you have served your neighbor who needs what the government provides. When you provide for your family, God is pleased. That you have helped your neighbor with the necessities of life by sharing with them what He has given to you, God is pleased. And when you give to your local congregation to support the ongoing preaching of the gospel, God is pleased. To all this giving, He says to you, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Looking at giving in this light makes it a joy to give. The joy is multiplied. There is joy in you because you have served your neighbor in his need. There is joy in your neighbor for God has answered their prayers through you. And God rejoices and is pleased with it all. It might just make the humdrum of grocery shopping and mortgage payments a bit more joyous. It might even make April 15 tolerable (St. Paul had to have this pep talk with the Romans, also, “This is why you pay taxes….” Rom. 13:6). And it surely will make the envelope placed into the offering plate a joyful thing. Indeed God is pleased with you. You are saved by faith alone because of Jesus Christ. And that saving faith is never alone. It is busy and active. It serves the neighbor in society, family, and church with free and cheerful giving Cindy Hilger, Chairman and Your Stewardship Committee Page 8 The Desert Voice February 2016 FEBRUARY 2016 6 7 7 8 9 10 20 21 22 23 23 24 26 26 26 27 28 28 Charles Richardson Kyle James Onak Zoe King Bob Hilger Elizabeth White Sheila McCafferty Gene Diepholz Aiden & Alivia (Negron) Giles Grete Meyer Andie Bonette Walt Ulbricht Beverly Ducatte Emma Ashbaugh Elyssa Ashbaugh Erin Ashbaugh Robert Heinzeroth Earlene Reynolds Nancy Ahsmuhs MARCH 2016 Birthdays 2 3 31 31 Logan Ashbaugh Wally Kortman Christina Negron Webb Sprague 2016 Anniversaries February 11,1988 February 17, 1968 February 18,1989 February 27 Craig Janelle Kortmeyer Jim & Noralyn Lorimer Howard & Alice Musashi Gene & Bonnie Diepholz If your birthday/anniversary is not listed, please let the office know so we can help you celebrate! 760-347-3971. Trinity Lutheran can really use each member and winter visitors time and skills. We ask again to give the Time & Talent sheet an in-depth review. The listing provides comprehensive offerings on many ways in which we can all serve our church and serve each other. You'll see that the categories listed are Worship Assistance, Music Ministry, Christian Education, Reaching Out To Others and more. Each category includes specific functions where the church might be looking for a little help. The point of it all is this: Over the years, our long-time volunteers are dwindling because of advanced age, or moving out of the area. And some, of course, have been called home to be with our Heavenly Father. For these reasons, we need more volunteers to ensure that our wonderful church continues to function smoothly and to spread the Word of Jesus Christ. Cindy Hilger and the Stewardship Committee
