Growing Together in Faith. Serving Together in Christ.
February 2016
Creating Structure for the Body of Christ
In Paul’s writings to his Christian communities he talks about the idea of the church being the “Body of
Christ.” Here are a couple of lines from his letter to the Romans:
For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are
many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. (Romans 12:4-5)
Paul is emphasizing here, and in other letters, the importance of a united body while still appreciating the
diversity of each body part. We see this all the time in the life of the church. The week of Hypothermia,
among others, is a great example. We as the Body of Christ collectively open our doors to the homeless for
a week of the year, but we could not pull off this mission if it were not for each of your individual
contributions. Other examples include decorating the church for Christmas and Easter, offering Sunday
school education during the year, or making worship happen on Sunday morning.
The subtle difference between a functioning body and the church is—a body has systems in place that
provide the body the ability to have connectedness between each of its individual parts. Examples include
the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and a functioning brain. You know all of this, but what does
it mean for us as a congregation? In short, each church needs structure in order for the system to work
smoothly.
When Holy Trinity was involved in the Synod’s program called “The Journey” we were provided with a
book titled Effective Staffing for Vital Churches. The authors suggest the church, as the body of Christ, has
four functions: 1) to invite people into the Christian community, 2) to connect people within the Christian
community, 3) to disciple people in the way of Christ, and 4) to send people back out into the world to
serve others in the name of Christ. These four aspects of the church are our collective calling, but they are
only made possible by the individual efforts of the members involved.
Take a moment and think about the four functions above. Have you ever invited someone to church? Have
you ever participated in an activity that connects you with other members of the church? Have you ever
participated in or led a Christian education activity? Have you ever served others in the name of Christ?
My guess, and hope, is that you answered yes to all of these questions, but, in your experience, does the
Holy Spirit naturally call you into one area more than another?
This month, I am going to start having conversations with people who feel they have a passion for each of
the four aspects of church life. If you are one of these people, please seek me out to join the conversation
so we can reflect on the ways we have lived out these expressions of the church in the past and how we can
move forward in the future.
St. Paul realized very quickly in his ministry the importance of the Body of Christ and what is capable
when the body is functioning with healthy systems and structures in place. For Paul, when the church is
everything it is called to be, it becomes Christ’s presence in the world. Thanks be to God for Holy Trinity
and for being Christ’s presence in this community. 1
Pastor Mike

MORE PARISH NEWS
Thank you to everyone who sent us cards of condolence,
called, and gave us hugs when Mavis Thompson, our mother,
grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on
December 16, 2015. Your words and actions were very
comforting. Mavis, who was known to us as Grandma Besta,
was 102 1/2.
A special thank you to Pastor Mike, who dropped everything to drive out to
Manor Care at Fair Oaks where she was recovering from surgery, to give
her communion. It was very comforting to know she had communion
before her passing.
Mavis’s obituary ran in her hometown Janesville (WI) Gazette:
http://www.gazettextra.com/20160117/mavis-thompson-janesvillewialexandria-va.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m.,
followed by a reception/ice cream social in the narthex.
Jean Strandlie and Julie, Jerry, Carolyn & Nicholas (Strandlie) Lemens
Thank you to Pastor Mike, and
members of the congregation,
for your prayers, phone calls,
and cards during my recent

kindness are much appreciated.

Trinity's Archives—
Looking for a volunteer photo

Did you know that on Friday, February
10, 1956, Holy Trinity’s Couples Club

whose box they won at the auction.
The auction “offering” was
put into the building fund.
Work independently or with HT librarian
and archivist, Mary Bowen. Mary will help
you get started. Duties: organize and
identify old print photos in Holy Trinity's

Committed to Increase Awareness Of Human Trafficking
January was National Awareness Month for Human
Trafficking. In recognition of the efforts in Fairfax
County to eliminate the horrific crime of human
trafficking and to support trafficked victims, the Fairfax County Board of
Supervisors held a Proclamation Ceremony marking Human Trafficking
Awareness Month. John Volt, vice president of Eagle Bank, accepted the 2016
proclamation on behalf of the many organizations and individuals working to end
Human Trafficking.
Our Commitment: In response to the resolution passed at our WELCA 2014
Triennial Convention, we, Women of the ELCA, are committed to help eradicate
human trafficking by creating awareness in our communities, advocating for
more protection and rehabilitation for victims, and participating in antitrafficking campaigns in our churches, schools and neighborhoods.
Education and Awareness: I, Wilma Dublin, HT’s representative, would like to
do a study series about Human Trafficking with a group of interested people.
The ‘ELCA Justice for Women’ has a six-session series that we can use. In
addition I have a four-session study series created by the ‘Safe Harbor
Campaign’. If you are interested in participating, please contact me at
[email protected] and we can decide on a convenient time.
Books: Refuse to Do Nothing: Finding Your Power to Abolish ModernDay Slavery, by Shayne Moore and Kimberly McOwen Yim, is a guide of how
regular people, juggling the everyday demands of family and work, can become
activists fighting human trafficking and slavery.
Renting Lacy: A Story Of America's Prostituted Children (A Call
to Action) by Linda Smith. The author of the book, Linda Smith is a former
U.S. congresswoman and founder of ‘Shared Hope International’, an
organization that fights sex trafficking and commercial sex exploitation. Smith
brings to life characters based on real stories and interviews with teen survivors.
Through skillful narrative, interwoven with commentary by the author, the book
shows the inside of the child prostitution industry from the prospective of the
girls. It provides a rare glimpse on the men who sell them, and the ones who
buy them. The book draws you into the lives of these young girls as they
struggle to survive each night, watching their childhood hopes and dreams slip
away in the darkness.
Prayer: Everlasting God, human trafficking is an overwhelming and scary topic.
We ask that you open our hearts and minds to better understand some
of the many ways that people become vulnerable to trafficking. We
know you are a God of justice and love and we pray that you will help
us to keep your life-giving vision of the world in mind. Amen.
