Where Do I Go Detecting?
Getting Started
A little bit of research will help you to
identify the most promising & productive
goldfields or treasure hunting sites.
Once you’ve made the decision to buy a metal
detector and get home with it, you no doubt
can’t wait to get started with some detecting.
But where exactly should you start? You
can take your detector with you practically
anywhere – the opportunities are endless and
limited only by your imagination. Finds can be
made anywhere; you only need to take a look
at any recent detecting magazine or website
and you will see that there is an abundance
of amazing finds being made. This shows
there are still plenty of treasures waiting to
be found, but some sites are more productive
than others, so it helps to know the best type
of places to go detecting. All it takes is a little
bit of research to identify the most promising
and productive goldfields or treasure hunting
sites to detect.
There are many different types of valuable
objects you can find with your metal detector,
such as rare coins, ancient relics of past
civilisations, lost jewellery and gold nuggets.
Nuggets are generally found in different
places to where you would typically find
coins, relics or jewellery, so where you go
detecting depends greatly on what you
would like to find.
4
Research
Gold Prospecting
Ideal sources for research are the local library or historical society, Government Department of
Mines, newspaper archives, local town plans, etc. Don’t forget to talk to the local elders. They’ll
often tell you about the popular swimming holes they used when growing up, the field that
used to be a sports ground or perhaps a park that was used as a local market. These links to the
past are all potential hot spots for you and your detector. The older the site is, the better – as your
potential to find coins and relics from long ago increases. Always remember to obtain permission
to enter and detect on private property.
The best places to detect for gold nuggets
are where gold has previously been found,
and surrounding areas with similar geology.
So again, do your research to find out about
historic goldfields. Such as:
Also, find out if there is a detecting club in your area. Joining your local club is a great way to
learn tips and tricks about how to detect and where to search. You can also make new friends
who are passionate about detecting too.
• Tailings from goldmine sites
• Old diggings (areas where prospectors
dug for gold in the 1800s)
• In or near streams where gold can be
panned
• Dry-blowing locations (usually in arid
Treasure Hunting
areas where water was scarce)
• Old reef mine dumps and slopes.
When detecting for coins, relics or jewellery, use your imagination – anywhere people are likely
to have left things behind – you are likely to make good finds! Also, don’t forget the places right
under your feet; you never know what you might dig up even in your own backyard. To help get
you started here is a list of locations that are generally more productive for finding coins, relics or
jewellery:
• Showgrounds and racecourses
• Pastures
• Picnic areas
• Woodlands
• Battlefields
• Ghost towns and ancient town sites
• Camping grounds
• Old homes and public buildings
• Swimming holes
• Sports grounds
• Parks, playgrounds and school yards
• Beaches
• Ploughed fields
• Jetties and piers.
There is plenty of gold waiting to be found.
Now that you know where to search, all you
need is a good detector to get started.
The opportunities
are endless and
limited only by your
imagination.
There is still plenty of treasure to be found in many interesting locations around the world.

Metal Detecting Basics
How Do Metal
Detectors Work?
Metal detectors work by transmitting an
electromagnetic field from the search coil
into the ground. Any metal objects (targets)
within the electromagnetic field will become
energised and retransmit an electromagnetic
field of their own. The detector’s search coil
receives the retransmitted field and alerts the
user by producing a target response. Minelab
metal detectors are capable of discriminating
between different target types and can be set
to ignore unwanted targets.
1. Battery
1
The battery provides power to the detector.
2. Control Box
The control box contains the detector’s
electronics. This is where the transmit signal is
generated and the receive signal is processed
and converted into a target response.
8
2
3. Search Coil
The detector’s search coil transmits the
electromagnetic field into the ground and
receives the return electromagnetic field from
a target.
4. Transmit Electromagnetic Field
(visual representation only - blue)
The transmit electromagnetic field energises
targets to enable them to be detected.
5. Target
A target is any metal object that can be
detected by a metal detector. In this example,
the detected target is treasure, which is a
good (accepted) target.
6. Unwanted Target
Unwanted targets are generally ferrous
(attracted to a magnet), such as nails, but can
also be non-ferrous, such as bottle tops. If
the metal detector is set to reject unwanted
targets then a target response will not be
produced for those targets.
3
7. Receive Electromagnetic Field
(visual representation only - yellow)
The receive electromagnetic field is generated
from energised targets and is received by the
search coil.
8. Target Response
4
(visual representation only - green)
When a good (accepted) target is detected
the metal detector will produce an audible
response, such as a beep or change in tone.
Many Minelab detectors also provide a visual
display of target information.

Key Detecting Concepts Explained
Whether you’re prospecting for gold, hunting for ancient coins or scuba diving for sunken treasure, there
are some basic metal detecting concepts and terms that are common to all forms of metal detecting.
Understanding how these definitions apply to your type of detecting will improve your success.
Detection Depth Factors
The most common question about metal detectors is ‘How deep do they go?’ The answer is not
as simple as you might think and usually starts with ‘It depends…’
The depth that a metal detector can detect a target depends on a number of factors:
Low
grou minera
nd
lised
ed
ineralis
High md
groun
Ground Balance
Ground Balance is a variable setting that
increases detection depth in mineralised
ground. This ground may contain salts, such as
in wet beach sand or fine iron particles, such
as in red earth. These minerals respond to a
detector’s transmit field in a similar way that a
target does. Due to the much larger mass of
the ground compared to a buried target, the
effect of mineralisation can easily mask small
targets. To correct this the Ground Balance
setting removes the responding ground
signals, so you clearly hear target signals and
are not distracted by ground noise.
There are three main types of Ground Balance:
1. Manual Ground Balance – Manually adjust
the Ground Balance setting, so the minimum
amount of ground signal is heard.
2. Automatic Ground Balance – The detector
automatically determines the best Ground
Balance setting. This is quick, simple and more
accurate than a manually set Ground Balance.
3. Tracking Ground Balance – The detector
continuously adjusts the Ground Balance
setting while detecting. This ensures that the
Ground Balance setting is always correct.
Minelab detectors use exclusive advanced
technologies for superior ground balancing
capabilities that cannot be matched by any
other detectors.
2. Target size
Large targets can be detected deeper
than small targets.
1. Ground mineralisation
3. Target shape
A target in low mineralised ground can be
detected deeper than a target in highly
mineralised ground. The level of ground
mineralisation has a significant influence on
detection depth.
Circular shapes like coins and rings
can be detected deeper than long
thin shapes like nails.
4. Target orientation
Minelab has a range of features and technologies
such as Automatic Ground Balance, MPS, DVT,
BBS, FBS and ACCU-TRAK to remove the effects
of mineralised ground to ensure maximum
detection depth.
A horizontal coin (e.g. lying flat) can
be detected deeper than a vertical
coin (e.g. on edge).
5. Target material
High conductive metals (e.g. silver)
can be detected deeper than low
conductive metals (e.g. lead).
Frequency
The frequency of a metal detector is one of the main characteristics that determines how well
targets can be detected. Generally, a single frequency detector that transmits at a high frequency
will be more sensitive to small targets and a single frequency detector that transmits at low
frequencies will give more depth on large targets. Minelab’s single frequency technologies
are VLF and VFLEX. Minelab’s revolutionary BBS, FBS and MPS technologies transmit multiple
frequencies and are therefore simultaneously sensitive to small and deep large targets.
Discrimination
Discrimination is a metal detector’s ability to identify buried targets based on conductive and/
or ferrous properties. By accurately identifying a buried target you can decide to dig it up or
consider it as junk and continue searching. Minelab detectors produce target identification
(Target ID) numbers and/or Target Tones to indicate the type of target that has been detected.
There are four main types of discrimination in Minelab detectors:
1. Variable discrimination – The simplest type of discrimination which uses a control knob to
adjust the level of discrimination.
2. Iron Mask/Iron Reject – Used mostly with gold prospecting detectors to ignore iron junk.
3. Notch discrimination – Allows specific target types to be accepted or rejected.

copper coins
Note: Discrimination Pattern shown is for visual representation only.
Notch discrimination
E.g. X-TERRA 705 Discrimination
Scale – the black shaded
segments represent rejected
targets and the clear segments
represent accepted targets.
4. Smartfind – The most advanced form of discrimination. Target IDs are plotted based on both
ferrous and conductive properties on a two dimensional (2D) display. Individual segments or
larger areas of the display can be shaded to reject unwanted targets. [Refer to page 29]

Frequency
X-TERRA coils are available in three different frequencies – 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz & 18.75 kHz.
The standard coil issued with most X-TERRA detectors is the 7.5 kHz Concentric coil. This
frequency is good for general coin and treasure hunting. The 3 kHz frequency gives improved
depth on highly conductive targets such as brass, silver and copper coins, and is more accurate at
recognising ferrous metal so it is a great coil for relic hunting. The 10 x 5-inch 18.75 kHz Double-D
coil is supplied with the X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack. This frequency increases the detector’s sensitivity
to small targets, and is great for detecting fine gold chains, stud earrings and gold nuggets.
10.5-inch
Double-D coils
Size
Large coils improve detection depth for larger targets (such as relics and coin hoards) and
provide better ground coverage. Small coils improve sensitivity to smaller targets (such as small
gold nuggets and fine jewellery) and have a manoeuvrability advantage. Small coils also offer
good target separation in high trash areas. An elliptical coil shape provides a compromise, with
good sensitivity due to its narrow width and good ground coverage due to its length.
Configuration
The X-TERRA coils are available in two winding configurations – Concentric and Double-D. The
Concentric coils are perfectly suited to coin and treasure hunting, as the concentrated search
field provides excellent target separation and highly accurate pinpointing ability. The Double-D
coils perform better, with less noise, in mineralised areas (such as goldfields and beaches with
black sand), and their wide search field provides excellent ground coverage.

World’s First All-Digital Metal Detectors
VFLEX transforms conventional single frequency metal detection technology by including two
microcontrollers (miniature computers), one inside the control box and one inside the coil. Every
time the detector starts up, the microcontrollers establish communication via a digital data link.
The coil microcontroller communicates the coil’s configuration, size and exact frequency, so the
control box can generate a perfectly matched transmit signal. This significantly reduces distortion
and increases Target ID accuracy.
Perfect Sine Wave Transmission
VFLEX technology generates and transmits a perfect high quality sine wave, using the same
technology that is found in high quality digital audio players, and is produced without distortion.
The removal of distortion maximises power transmitted from the coil, therefore increasing
detection depth and sensitivity. This also results in enhanced Target ID accuracy and greater
immunity to both ground and environmental noise.
In-Coil Signal Booster
Weak target signals are amplified inside the coil, before the receive signal is sent up the coil cable
where interference and signal loss can occur. This technique improves immunity to electrical
noise by reducing false signals and increasing target signal strength, therefore improving
detection depth and sensitivity.
Coil Selectable Transmit Frequencies
By changing the coil you can change the detector’s frequency, maximising sensitivity and depth
for a wide range of target types and conditions. VFLEX gives you three frequencies to choose
from: 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz and 18.75 kHz.
Low frequency for deep, large and/or high conductive
targets, such as silver, copper, large gold rings and relics
Medium frequency for all-round detecting, good
sensitivity and detection depth for all target sizes
High frequency is very sensitive and ideal for jewellery,
fine chains and sub-gram gold nuggets

Detecting Along the Hudson River
Found with: Sovereign GT
“After working on it for about 5 minutes... I pulled out a
Revolutionary War bayonet! I was stunned. We laughed,
and started a victory dance like a couple of fools. When
the excitement subsided, we started to hunt again and got
another good hit. This time in a hillside. After digging into the
hill we pulled out a cannonball with ‘1727’ engraved on it.
Thank you Minelab for a great day of detecting. My brother is
now hooked and will be getting his own Minelab.“

Love This Hobby
Found with: Explorer SE Pro
“I scooped out the first handful of dirt... I was pleasantly surprised to get my first older
Canadian silver coin... I stuck the probe back in the hole and she sang out again. I said
‘oh boy, there’s more in here!’ I reached in and took another handful of dirt out, and
mixed in the dirt were 5 or 6 more silver coins, some quarters and a half, I think. Now,
I started getting shaky... I looked down in the hole, and I could see more coins in there
stacked together, but horizontally in the hole, with the reeded edges sticking up. My first
ever Cache and it’s something I will never forget! It is why I love this hobby and these
Minelab detectors so much!”

TREASURE Detecting Technologies
Treasures, such as old coins, ancient relics and lost jewellery, are found in areas of past and present
human activity. However, these areas are also littered with discarded trash, such as foil, nails and bottle
tops. For this reason Minelab’s multi-frequency TREASURE technologies have been developed to obtain
more information about buried targets. This provides accurate Target ID numbers and audio tones, so
treasures can be separated from trash before digging them up.
BBS Technology
BBS (Broad Band Spectrum) simultaneously transmits, receives and analyses a broad band
of multiple frequencies to deliver substantial detection depth, high sensitivity and accurate
discrimination for a wide range of target types.
This broad band of frequencies provides the detector’s electronics with more information about a
target and the surrounding environment than is possible with single frequency technologies. The
detector carries out advanced signal processing of these frequencies resulting in improved target
identification accuracy and increased depth. This process also significantly reduces false signals
from ground minerals, even in harsh and variable conditions, such as salt water beaches.
Find Different Target Types & Sizes with Every Sweep
Generally, high transmit frequencies are more sensitive to small targets and low transmit
frequencies give more depth on large deep targets. BBS simultaneously transmits and analyses
a broad band of multiple frequencies from 1.5 kHz to 25.5 kHz and is therefore sensitive to both
small and large deep targets at the same time. This means you only need to cover the ground
once, allowing you to find more treasure.
In-Coil Signal Booster
RCB (Receive Coil Boost) circuitry greatly amplifies weak target signals, from small and deep
targets, inside the search coil, where the signals are received. This has three main advantages over
standard techniques of amplification inside the control box:
1. Greater immunity to electrical noise, reducing false signals
2. No loss of signal strength, and faint targets, through the cable
3. Improved detection depth and sensitivity
Vref.
DAC
Multiple
Analogue
Signals
MUX
MCU
Accurate Multi-Channel Signal Conversion
BBS analyses multiple signal channels through a technique called multiplexing (MUX). These
signals are compared to a digital reference (Vref. and DAC). The end result is high resolution
accurate target signals that can be identified by the detector’s microcontroller (MCU). This
analogue-to-digital conversion technique allows BBS to separate ground signals from target
signals, achieving great depth and stability in difficult conditions.
ACCU-TRAK
Maintain Accurate Ground Balance
ACCU-TRAK continuously measures the level of ground mineralisation while the detector’s coil
is swept in search of targets. Any changes in mineralisation, which can occur quite quickly, are
analysed and the Ground Balance level automatically adjusted.
ACCU-TRAK ensures the detector is always correctly ground balanced and operating at maximum
depth and sensitivity at all times with minimum effort.
(Sovereign GT is the only TREASURE detector with ACCU-TRAK).

FBS Technology
FBS (Full Band Spectrum) simultaneously transmits, receives and analyses a full band of multiple
frequencies. This provides the detector’s electronics with even more information about a target
and the surrounding environment than is possible with single frequency or BBS technology. This
has a number of advantages, including:
• High sensitivity across a wide range of target types and sizes, so you only have to cover the
ground once.
• Automatic sensitivity and ground compensation, so maximum depth is achieved even in
mineralised ground, including salt water beaches.

Frequencies
Find Every Target Type & Size with Every Sweep
Generally, high transmit frequencies are more sensitive to small targets and low transmit
frequencies give more depth on large deep targets. FBS simultaneously transmits and analyses a
full band of multiple frequencies from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz and is therefore sensitive to both very
small and large deep targets at the same time. This means you only need to cover the ground
once and can be confident you’re not leaving ANY valuable treasure behind.
Automatic Sensitivity & Ground Compensation for Maximum Depth
As you sweep the coil in search of targets, Automatic Sensitivity and Ground Compensation
monitor the full band of frequencies for changes in ground mineralisation. Whenever the level
of ground mineralisation changes the sensitivity is automatically adjusted to maintain maximum
depth. The ground compensation circuitry removes false signals caused by fast changing levels
of ground mineralisation. Both of these advanced features work together to maintain maximum
detection depth and sensitivity, allowing you to concentrate on listening for targets.

FBS uses multiple channelled Sigma-Delta analogue-to-digital converter technology to digitise
the analogue signals received by the search coil. This ultra-fast processing, using a digital
reference (1 bit DAC), provides the microcontroller (MCU) with detailed information about the
ground conditions and targets. This gives FBS the ability to precisely separate target signals from
ground signals for maximum detection depth. It also provides Smartfind with the necessary high
resolution target data to accurately plot targets.

Key Technologies
Eureka Gold
Eureka Gold Technologies
Classic gold prospecting calls for easy operation, with traditional
proven technologies that perform in mineralised ground where most
gold is found. The Eureka Gold uses standard VLF technology with
3F three frequency options and ACCU-TRAK automatic ground
tracking for great results.
Conventional VLF Technology
VLF (Very Low Frequency) is a conventional single frequency sine wave transmission technology.
This is the traditional type of technology used in most basic metal detectors. Single frequency
sine wave detectors create an electro-magnetic field, which is transmitted into the ground in
a continuous wave. While the basic way that the signal is sent out and received back has not
changed, the receive signal processing has improved enormously. This has proven to be a reliable
and easy to use technology for finding gold.
Selectable Three Frequency Transmission
3F (Three Frequency) provides three different transmit frequencies in the one metal detector,
selectable at the flick of a switch. Each transmit frequency optimises the detector for different size
targets and conditions. The three transmit frequencies are:
• 6.4 kHz - Best for large deep gold nuggets
• 20 kHz - Best for general gold detecting
• 60 kHz - Best for small gold nuggets
Having three selectable frequencies gives the versatility that is equivalent to three conventional
single frequency detectors.
Accurate Automatic Ground Tracking
Tracked
Ground
Continuous
Max. Depth
ACCU-TRAK continuously measures the level of ground mineralisation while the detector’s
coil is swept in search of gold. Any changes in mineralisation, which can occur quite quickly in
goldfields, are analysed and the Ground Balance level automatically adjusted.
ACCU-TRAK ensures the detector is always correctly ground balanced and operating at maximum
depth and sensitivity at all times with minimum effort. This ensures you are always free to focus
on finding nuggets rather than listening to noisy ground and/or making manual adjustments.

Key Technologies
GPX 4800
GPX Technologies
Sens Smooth
Most mineralised ground
Alluvial gold generally occurs in highly mineralised ground
where conventional detectors fail to perform. Minelab’s
exclusive GPX technologies stand alone in their ability
to remove false ground signals when detecting in highly
mineralised and salt saturated ground. This provides
significant performance benefits for finding large deep gold
whilst maintaining sensitivity to small gold nuggets.
Multi Period Sensing
MPS (Multi Period Sensing) is Minelab’s advanced
Pulse Induction (PI) technology that transmits
pulses of different time periods. MPS also
samples the receive signal at multiple time
periods allowing target signals and ground
signals to be separated. This effectively removes
the ground signal from even the most highly
mineralised ground while still being sensitive to
both small and deep gold. This achieves superior
depth in extremely mineralised ground.
Sens Extra
Enhance

38
SETA (Smart Electronic Timing Alignment) is
a highly complex method of matching the
characteristics of individual Timings with
continuous measurements from the surrounding
electromagnetic environment, such as the
earth’s magnetic field. This gives the advantage
of improved detector performance through the
complete removal of noise signals. The sensitivity
across all Timings is increased, therefore SETA
allows more gold to be found than any other
metal detector technology.
Sensitive Smooth
(GPX 5000 ONLY)
Is optimised for the most severe, heavily
mineralised, variable and “hot rock”
infested grounds, even when using a
Monoloop coil.
Enhance (Improved)
Runs quietly in most heavily mineralised,
variable and “hot rock“ infested grounds
using a Monoloop coil. It is more sensitive
and detects deeper than Sensitive
Smooth but can be slightly more affected
by severe ground mineralisation.
Fine Gold

Enhance cannot. It is more sensitive and
detects deeper than Enhance.
(GPX 5000 ONLY)
Provides the best signal response on
small to large gold in salt saturated
and mineralised ground conditions. It
will operate very well on salt lakes and
beaches.
Normal
Gives great performance on a wide range
of soil conditions, and target sizes. It is a
good default timing to assess a new area.

Dual Voltage Technology
DVT (Dual Voltage Technology) is Minelab’s
advanced Pulse Induction technology that uses
pulses with two voltage levels to further enhance
MPS. The two voltage levels work in combination
with the different time period pulses transmitted
by MPS to increase the amount of power
transmitted into the ground. DVT also allows
more of the ground signal to be removed, further
increasing detection depth and sensitivity. This
achieves ultimate depth in extremely mineralised
ground.

How to select GPX Soil/Timings (Timings)
Minelab’s Chief Scientist, Bruce Candy has created an expanded range of Timings to further enhance MPS
technology for different ground mineralisation levels, target sizes and target depths. Here are three easy
ways to understand how to select the best Timing for your detecting conditions.
1. Timing Icons
Normal
Each icon uses colour and graphics to indicate the ground conditions, depth and target size that each Timing is optimised for.
[The diagram on page 38 shows the Timings available across the GPX Series].
• Ground conditions - there are nine colours indicating suitability for different levels of ground mineralisation.
• Depth layers – there are three depth layers indicating suitability for shallow, medium or deep gold.
• Target size – there are four target sizes indicating suitability for large, medium, small and fine gold.
• Target type - there are two types: gold nuggets and coin targets. Although coin targets are only shown in the Coin/Relic
Timing, coins and relics can also be detected in all other Timings.

mineralisation, coil size and configuration.

Technical Information
Coils Explained
When choosing a coil, there are a few basics to remember that relate to
the size, shape, configuration and frequency of the coil.
Concentric
Size
The size of a coil can influence the detection depth and sensitivity of a detector. The larger
the coil, the deeper it tends to detect, but with less sensitivity to small targets. The smaller the
diameter, the more sensitive it becomes, but with reduced detection depth.
Smaller coils are lighter in weight, easier to control and may be chosen for their ability to
negotiate difficult terrain or undergrowth. Smaller coils also have a target separation advantage
in areas of high trash, due to their smaller detection footprint.
Double-D
Shape
The most common coil shapes are round and elliptical. They are available in solid and open-web
designs. Elliptical coils are more manoeuvrable without sacrificing ground coverage. Round
coils are often more stable, higher performing, and achieve greater depth. Open-web coils are
waterproof, help cut through water and assist when pinpointing because the ground is visible
through the coil.
Configuration
The difference between configurations is the shape of the wire winding within the coil housing.
The three most common types are Concentric, Double-D, and Monoloop.
Monoloop
1. Concentric Coil
A Concentric coil has an inner circle and an outer circle wire winding. The search pattern
is cone shaped and can be useful for accurately pinpointing targets. Concentric coils
require more sweep overlap for thorough ground coverage. They are also noisier in highly
mineralised ground and therefore might not be the best choice for gold prospecting.
2. Double-D Coil
A Double-D coil has two overlapping wire windings in the shape of two D’s. The benefits of a
Double-D coil are stability (especially in heavily mineralised ground), good depth, sensitivity
and a very thorough search pattern requiring less overlap.
When used with GPX detectors, Double-D coils (unlike Monoloop coils) are able to
discriminate between ferrous and non-ferrous targets when Iron Reject is activated. They are
also more stable when used on wet salt beach sand and in electrically noisy environments.
When used with X-TERRA detectors, Double-D coils perform quieter than Concentric coils in
mineralised ground and are therefore well suited for gold prospecting.
3. Monoloop Coil
Monoloop coils are a specific configuration of coil for Pulse Induction technology detectors
(GPX Series). These coils have one winding of wire around the circumference of the coil,
which is used to both transmit and receive. The signal pattern of the Monoloop coil is cone
shaped, requiring more overlapping. In extremely heavily mineralised grounds they can be
more difficult to ground balance, however they tend to achieve greater depth and are more
sensitive than Double-D coils.
Frequency (X-TERRA Series)
X-TERRA detectors are capable of operating at
one of three different frequencies; 3 kHz, 7.5
kHz or 18.75 kHz. The operating frequency is
determined by the coil being used and affects
the detector’s performance. Generally, the
lower the frequency, the deeper the detector
can penetrate the ground. At low frequencies
sensitivity to small low conductive targets
is reduced. The higher the frequency, the
higher the sensitivity to small targets, however
detection depth is reduced.
Operate the detector at 18.75 kHz (high
frequency) to find small nuggets and fine
jewellery.
Operate the detector at 3 kHz or 7.5 kHz
(lower frequencies) when searching for coins
and relics.

Glossary of Terms
Conductivity
Conductivity refers to how well a target allows electrical current to flow through it. The
conductivity illustration shows how electrical currents freely flow around a highly conductive
coin when energised by the electromagnetic field from a metal detector.
Discrimination
Discrimination is a metal detector’s ability to identify buried targets based on conductive and/
or ferrous properties. Based on measuring these properties, it is possible to determine valuable
targets from junk targets so you can spend more time digging valuable targets.

Frequency
The frequency of a metal detector refers to how fast it sends signals into the ground. Frequency
is measured in Hertz (Hz). Certain frequencies detect certain targets better than others, e.g. high
frequencies find very small targets while low frequencies find deeper/larger targets.
Ground Mineralisation
Ground Mineralisation refers to the naturally occurring minerals in the ground that affect a
metal detector’s performance. There are two main types of ground mineralisation, one is due
to iron particles and can be identified by its red colouration. The other is due to salt, such as salt
water beaches. Iron particle mineralisation causes the ground to become magnetic and salt
mineralisation causes the ground to become conductive. Both forms of ground mineralisation
can produce false signals that mask targets. The ground mineralisation illustration shows minerals
in the ground producing a response to the metal detector’s electromagnetic field.

A History of
Groundbreaking
Innovation
Minelab sparked a revolution in metal detecting with
the launch of its first detector in 1985. With more
patents for new technologies over the past 25 years
than any competitors, here are some highlights of
Minelab’s revolutionary technologies...
1985 - VLF
The Goldseekers 15000 was the first detector
with accurate Ground Balance and ferrous (iron)
discrimination.
1991 - BBS
The Sovereign was the first detector with multifrequency BBS technology, automatic ground
compensation and an unmatched discrimination ability
to identify targets.
1995 - MPS
The SD 2000 was the first detector with MPS technology,
igniting a worldwide gold rush. These detectors found
huge quantities of gold in ground that was previously
unworkable.
1999 - FBS
The Explorer was the first detector with FBS technology
and highly accurate two dimensional Smartfind
discrimination.
2005 - VFLEX
The X-TERRAs were the first detectors with digital VFLEX
technology allowing the operating frequency to be
changed by changing coils.
2011 and Beyond
Stay tuned for more new products and technology
developments. With Minelab the future is exciting!
