The Kinjarling Trail is a cultural heritage asset drawing together Albany’s stories of landscape, harbours and ocean from Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures. The trail’s narratives link Menang history with the development of Albany’s foreshore. Weaving through Albany, it covers important sites, taking in Indigenous culture as well as Charles Darwin’s visit, European settlement and the natural environment. Each year thousands of people, locals and visitors, silently and solemnly gather for the dawn service at the top of Mount Clarence looking out over King George Sound to commemorate the diggers who perished in the Great War. Wreaths are laid upon the water of the Sound, just as one was laid at a dawn service held on 25 April 1930. Albany recently launched the stunning ANZAC Peace Park on its foreshore in recognition of the significance of the city’s role in the ANZAC legend. The park will play a significant role in the hosting of commemorative events for the Centenary of ANZAC in 2014, and is expected to attract thousands of international visitors. To get your fix, discover the ancient stone fish traps built 7,500 years ago by Menang people at Albany’s Oyster Harbour: they used tidal movements to catch fish. Consisting of eight weirs along the north end of Oyster Harbour, the traps are made of thousands of stones and an outlet gap covered with branches. They trapped fish as the tide levels dropped. Thrill seekers need look no further than the Mount Clarence Downhill, a 700 metre long purpose-built downhill track right in the centre of Albany with breathtaking views over King George Sound. Starting near the carpark on Apex Drive on Mount Clarence, the track drops 70 vertical metres and features trees, rock gardens, boulders and obstacles including jumps and drops, before opening out to a fire road near Hare Street. It’s a total of 965kms stretching from the Perth Hills to the south coast, with 6-8 weeks required to traverse it in full and 48 campsites along its length. But you can get your hit of the Real South’s natural wonders by walking the stretch from Albany to Denmark. Guided walks take you as far as Walpole. Or refresh your spirit with a ride on the Munda Biddi Trail, taking in the dramatic Southern Ocean and coastal scenery as you cycle the Albany to Denmark leg. 06 Stirling Range Climbs Bluff Knoll: one of the State’s highest peaks rises more than a kilometre in the air. Absorb Porongurup Range Climbs Bolganup Heritage Trail and The Pass: easy strolls Ride & Seek Pedal out to the Torndirrup Peninsula to view the Albany Wind Farm’s 18 wind turbines, said to produce about 80% of Albany’s electricity needs and to lower the State’s greenhouse gas emissions by 77,000 tonnes per year. Take in the magnificent scenery of the Torndirrup National Park, with its rugged coastline, karri forest and heathlands. Spot dolphins, seals and sea lions, and whale watch during winter and early spring. While you’re there, discover the Blowholes. Stony Hill is an easy walk trail, however Peak Head and Bald Head walks are both challenging and require forward planning. Take our advice: plan a day in each direction out of Albany and make a real trip of it. • soaring peaks, sheltered valleys and windswept lowlands at the banksia and eucalypt-rich Stirling Range National Park, said to have started formation one million years ago and boasting more than 1000 different species of wildflowers. One of the few places in WA where it occasionally snows, the park itself is about 80 kilometres from Albany and offers an excellent camping spot in Spring and Summer when days are warm and wildflowers proliferate. Its jagged peaks rise up out of the surrounding pristine countryside, offering alpine walks and beautiful scenery. The Park’s indigenous name is Koi Kyenunu-ruff • • • • • • Running along the top of Castle Rock in the Porongurup Range is the new Granite Skywalk, replacing the old lookout and part of a significant revitalisation of visitor facilities in the park. Panoramic views from two lookouts (upper and lower) are out of this world. Scale the incredible engineering of the Skywalk’s ladder then take in the vista from the upper lookout across farm land, vineyards and forest across to the coast. Take a picnic or plan a barbecue. (mist moving around the mountains) and Bluff Knoll is of particular spiritual significance to local indigenous people. Walk Tall A walk among the giants of the southern forests is not to be underestimated. Just west of Denmark, the Treetop Walk is 600 metres of gentle gradient 40 metres above the tingle forest. On your drive back to Albany, squeeze in an hour’s snorkelling and lazing about at Green’s Pool and call in at Denmark’s famous bakery for moreish pastries. The Denmark winery trail will astonish, with fabulous cellar doors and premium restaurants.
