More than a decade after three Egyptian men switched from selling hot dogs from their Midtown cart to serving halal food to Muslim cabdrivers, the Halal Guys are about to become a fast-food chain. The company — founded by Mohamed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka and Abdelbaset Elsayed — signed a deal with Fransmart, the restaurant franchise consulting firm that took Five Guys Burgers and Fries from four locations in Northern Virginia and helped turn it into a chain with more than 1,200 stores and more than $1 billion in sales last year. Qdoba, a Mexican food chain, is Fransmart’s other success story. “It’s going to be the Chipotle of Middle Eastern food,” Dan Rowe, Fransmart’s CEO, said. THE RESPONSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA “The original Halal Guys in Manhattan is a thing of local legend: a food cart that became a word-‐of-‐mouth phenomenon with long lines day and night. After signing with consulting Jirm Fransmart, Halal Guys now plans to grow into a chain of 100 brick-‐and-‐mortar stores in the U.S. and overseas in about Jive years.” “[Darren] Tristano [executive vice president at restaurant consultancy T e c h n o m i c ] s e e s F r a n s m a r t ’ s experience expanding Qdoba Mexican Grill (JACK) and Five Guys Burgers & Fries as invaluable to th1e Halal Guys’ prospects.” “The best thing for these budding U.S. restaurants at this point, Tristano says, is the lack of rivals in the Middle Eastern fast-‐food business right now. The food might not be widely known, but at least there’s little competition.” THE HEADLINES THE HEADLINES “If you’ve ever been in the neighborhood of 53rd and 6th, you can not miss the long lines at this place…” THE HEADLINES #1 Most Popular Food Truck THE HALAL GUYS-INSPIRED REEBOK SNEAKER $1.6 Trillion Halal Market by 2018.
