A Word from the President

great times to be sure.
As your President, I enjoy
the privilege of leading
one of JCNA’s most outstanding and
innovative Jaguar Clubs. During my
47 years as a member of JOCLA I
have had the fortunate opportunity
to meet men and women who
share an uncommon love of the
Jaguar Motorcar. These folks enjoy
the comradery that comes with
membership and involvement in club
doings.
Farewell dear lady. Be at peace.

wonderful laugh graced many a
club event and her kindness to new
members made them feel welcomed
to the JOCLA family.
Tim and Patty Tunnell are an example
of such members. Tim and Patty have
served in many rolls on the Board of
Directors; Tim has led many a tour
to some really great places. Tim and
Patty were a team of enthusiasm,
ideas, fun and great knowledge.
It was always great fun to see Tim
and Patty dancing at our annual
holiday dinner and Tim’s great smile
saying that he loved his “girl” for all
time. They were a great couple and
Patty will be missed by many of our
members.
It is with a very heavy heart that I
announce the passing away of Patty
“Patti cakes” Tunnell this month. Her
death was a surprise and a great loss
to this Club. Her positive attitude,
infectious smile, her bright eyes, and

be with us and we, as a family, will

Do you all remember the great lunch time we had a few decades ago at the old Saddle Peak Lodge, when the rains poured down on us and
filled up several of the leakier Jaggies as we tried to leave (one of them mine)? And a car wreck traffic mess on Topanga Canyon that made some of you
miss the whole thing? Well, that was so much fun that your ever-clever BoD has decided we need to do it again, and so we shall.
Led by our intrepid, adventurous President, Charlie Hallums, we are planning to once again terrify the good folks at Saddle Peak with our pride
of snarling Jaguars and owners. As those of you who read the title know this will be held on June 26th, arriving there at 11:30ish o’clock so that we can
all schmooze around a bit before going in at noon for our delightful brunch.
The restaurant offers a delightful prix fixe concoction for $35, plus tax, tip and drinks, offering an excellent and rapidly served brunch for very
little moolah. The food is very good and the restaurant has been praised by many a praiseur. I think it is still owned by a Ph.D, so it must be good for your
brain, mustn’t it?
For those who have not been before, Saddle Peak Lodge is a 100 year old roadhouse and supply point up in the Santa Monica Mountains,
variously functioning in the past as a Pony Express stop, a hunting lodge, and a bordello (heh, heh, I knew that would wake some of you up). It was
discovered as a hangout by the nearby Hollywood studio ranch glitterati in the golden 30’s and 40’s, and was frequented by legends such as Mary
Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Errol Flynn and Clark Gable. It is easily found by simply taking 1496 turns up Topanga Canyon, or by setting your GPS to 419
Cold Canyon Road, Calabasas, California, phone 818 222 3888.
Alternatively, as many have done before, you may gather at my house (260 State St, Pasadena) at around 9:30, nosh on a few life shortening
lardo goodies, and we’ll all cavalcade together to Saddle Peak. Do come topless if you can as that encourages the weather to be good. And above all,
please call me at 626-799-9087, or email creigt @ aol.com, telling me you are coming so I can alert the cowards at the restaurant. Also, feel free to bring
a friend if you wish; maybe we can con him/her into joining.
JOC ANNUAL PICNIC
SATURDAY, JULY 9TH
LOCATION: Judy Gravens’ home – Montrose
This year we’re doing something different for our ever popular Club Picnic. Rather than meeting at a park, we’ll
be hosted by Judy Gravens in her park-like yard in Montrose. With beautiful canyon views, it’s sure to be the best
setting ever. Also, no more burgers or sausages from the Mayuga kitchen, this year we’re having the event catered by The Pit Stop BBQ team. Entrees
will include Tri-tip and pulled pork, cooked curbside right at Judy’s home. There will be plenty of sides, soft drinks and water. Bring your own libations if
you care for something stronger. Seating, utensils, etc. provided.
We’re going to start a little later this year as well, to allow things to cool off a bit. Social hours 3-5pm, dinner served at 5pm. There is no cost

Editor’s Column
This month, Joel Salzburgs 1973 E type
graces the cover. It is a car he has
owned since new and when you think
about the rational reasons to part with
an extra car in one year, much less
43, you appreciate the circumstances
that came together to make long term
ownership possible. Joel has finally
decided to part with his gorgeous car
and shared a few stories about the
car with us. If you are interested in
purchasing it, his contact information is
in the classified section.
Joel writes:
It was October 1973 when I saw the
E-type for sale at the Jaguar franchise
in Palm Springs for $9,200. I left
Studio City immediately to purchase
it - it was not easy to find new E-type
roadsters. It was a hot 90 degree day
and I was sweltering inside the black
cockpit on the ride home, but it was
all worth it once I got home because it
looked so elegant in my driveway.
Having owned the Jaguar so long, I
rarely drove it in the rain but on one
drizzly day, my regular car was in the
shop so drove the XKE to the office. At
approximately 10 a.m. that morning, I
received a call from my wife informing
me that the water level in our backyard
was rising and water was coming into
the house. Quick as a wink, I got into
the XKE and headed from work in
Culver City to my house in Encino. By
then it was raining much harder.
Driving North on the 405 was okay but
as I exited the freeway at Ventura Blvd.,
the curb lanes in both directions were
flooded and I drove in the middle of the
road to keep the engine dry. Turning
on to White Oak Avenue, it happened
… the coil got wet and the engine quit.
Taking my shoes and socks off and
rolling up my slacks I got out of the car
and pushed it to safety. Wouldn’t you
know I dropped my keys into the water
which was rushing DOWN the road!
A few hours later, the water had
subsided and I found the keys hung up
on the edge of a storm drain a block
away. The car did not start on the first
try but thankfully, it eventually did start
and I got it home to the safety of my
garage. Needless to say that was the
last time that beautiful car went out in
the rain!

AGM and International Jaguar Festival Wrap Up
The first ever International Jaguar
Festival (formerly the Western
States Meet) was held in Phoenix
recently following the JCNA
Annual General Meeting.

Of local note, Steve Kirby and
Ed Sowell served as the JOC’s
delegates to the AGM. Not
much controversial was decided at the
meeting, as the decision on whether
to hold a second-tier or Premier level
National Championship Concours was
put off until next year. It was decided
that, beginning in 2017, clear bras will
be allowed in the Driven Division (for
cars, not spectators!). It was interesting
to see that the JCNA membership has
now grown to over 7000 from under
5000 a few years ago.
In the IJF Concours, Jim and Betty Friel
took first place in class C11 with a score
of 99.91 in their ’95 XJ8, while Steve
Kirby took second in C08, at 99.61, with
his ’65 Mark X (which made it the 900
mile roundtrip without any issues).
Lisa Ellis picked up first in Champion
Division C13 in her 1996 XJS with a
superb 99.91. Jim and Betty also picked
up their 2015 National Championship
Trophy at the AGM Banquet and Ed and
Judy Sowell accepted the Award for
Best Club Website for their daughter,
Janet, who designed and operates the
JOC site.

Champion Division Car in
the Club by national score)

for this award, the first
time that the two winners
had perfect scores and
the first time a husband
and wife team won in
separate cars!

La Jolla Concours Report
Despite
the threat
(promise?)
of inclement
weather, this
year’s La Jolla
Concours went
off without a
hitch under
increasingly
blue skies and
balmy breezes.
The three
SoCal Jag Clubs
co-sponsored
an exhibit of
Jaguars which
was placed in a prime position of Cove
Drive, just in front of the Concours
Main Entrance. We fielded about
twenty cars and had a lot of interest
from the thousands of passers-by.
In the Concours proper, JOC member
Stephen Russell’s 1961 Jaguar E-Type
Roadster won Best in Class 9C for
JOC won for Best Club Jaguar and received
a beautiful crystal bowl presented on the
main stage by car magazine magnate, Keith
Martin.
Steve and Cindi Kirby and Richard and
Sydney Darnell were also in attendance and
enjoyed each other’s company on Saturday
evening at the Concours pre-event Party.

JUDGES TRAINING SESSION ENJOYS BIG TURNOUT

On Saturday April 16 the Club held its annual Judges
Training Session. The purpose of the event is to train
and certify new judges for the Concours and to recertify existing judges for an additional three years.
In recent times the JCNA regulations with regards to
certified judges have become increasingly stringent
and the Concours Judging Rules more complex. It
was great to see over 20 past and new judges attend
the session.
As last year, the session was held at the Jaguar
Regional Training Center in Irvine…..but with a twist
this year. This is a marvelous facility offering a
variety of classroom settings perfect for our event, as
well as a luxurious “café”. We arrived at 8:30am with
our humble boxes of donuts only to find a lavish hot
breakfast had been prepared for us…..well actually it
was the leftovers from a film crew that happened to
be using the facility too….but what the heck, tasted
just as good!

After a few tense minutes, the promised stars of the
show arrived….the new F-Pace and XE models which
had just returned from a morning at Cars and Coffee
were put on display just for us and much attention
was paid as Regional Marketing Manager, Brian Sim,
took us through the highlights of both cars. On a
side note, when I put out the word that we would
get to see these cars I got a call from a local Jag
dealer asking “how did you get to see those cars,
we haven’t even seen them yet!” Thanks Brian for
making this happen, you are a great friend of the
Jaguar Club.
After such intense training and lusting, several of
us repaired to nearby Peppino’s Italian for a much
deserved slice and glass of chianti. Who knew
“training” could be so much?
