A Word from the President
One more time with feeling!
Happy New Year and buckle your seat belts,
2016 is going to be a terrific year of El Nino,
out of town events, interesting tours, social
interaction and more. First, I would like to
thank all the 2015 Board members who
made a valiant effort in bringing to the Club
terrific events, organization, variety and
imagination to our events. Especially our
Concours Chairman, Charlie Hallums, and our
Activities Chairman/1st VP Steve Kirby. Both
gentlemen had their hands full with excellent
results. ALSO, thank you to Gerry Wilburn
and the Quadts for a terrific Holiday Dinner
at the Long Beach Yacht Club, not to mention
Shirley Nyquist and her clever seating
arrangement system, very original.
This coming 2016 JOC events have all of the
imagination and organization that is typical
of our Club and its Officers. The January
event was a terrific success with Steve Kirby
organizing a Tour of the newly revamped
Peterson Automotive Museum and a lunch
at the historic Tom Bergins Irish Pub in the
Museum District. 60+ member participated
and were treated to automotive history and
elegance that has delighted many an eye and
by Mark Mayuga
has enhanced our dreams of becoming a Car
Collector. Jaguar was well represented with
Steve McQueens XK-SS, the famous XKR used
a James Bond movie9complete with rockets
and machine guns), and the C-75 Super Jag
just used in Sky Fall, another Bond Movie.
I always liked the fact that the bad guys
drove Jags, and always got away from the
Constables in their Rovers, cool. We were the
original Bad Boy Cars, move over Lambo!
months, The All British Invasion of The
Festival of Whales in Dana Point with all
manner and model of British Cars on Display
at this wonderful event overlooking the Blue
Pacific. We have our Annual Muckenthaler
Concours in Fullerton, a Concours with the
San Diego Club, an overnight event in the
Wine Country of the Santa Ynez Valley, an
event in Catalina Island, our Annual Club
Picnic, and a lot more things to enjoy.
In February, Steve Kirby and his band of
hearty souls will be organizing and running
the now Famous Surf and Turf Rally
throughout the Orange County Backroads
with the usual trick questions, green scenery,
and twisty bits of driving. Steve Kirby
has dedicated this event once again as a
philanthropic event to help with the cure
to Cystic Fibrosis, a challenge close to his
heart. I am sure that Steve will stage another
whooper of an event(100 members attended
last year) with that wild crazy raffle during
the luncheon. This is a terrific event and
please plan on attending and buying raffle
tickets, last year the Club Members donated
over $2,800 dollars to this worthwhile cause,
lets break that record this years!!!
I want to personally thank all you Club
Members that have participated in all or
some of our events, I sincerely hope you
have enjoyed yourselves and will continue
to attend the events which the Club Officers
and Chairman’s have worked so hard to
present. I am enjoying my 47th year as a
member of the JOCLA and my 11th term of
office as your President and I seem to never
get tired of all the interesting and terrific
people I have met and who have become
friends. Thank you for making the JOCLA
one of the most successful Jaguar Clubs in
JCNA. We all have a passion about our cars
and we all deserve to enjoy them with relish
and comradeship. So, let’s get to driving,
eating, and enjoying our favorite car, a
Jaguar.
We have other terrific events in the following

9th ANNUAL SURF AND TURF RALLY –
“WHERE WERE YOU IN ’72?”
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2016
7AM TO 2PM
FEBRUARY CLUB EVENT
The Jag Club will be joining the SoCal Healey Club for our 9th Annual Surf and Turf Rally and Lunch to benefit the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation. This always popular event features a scenic tour of OC with fun challenges and trivia along the
route, followed by a FREE plated lunch and benefit raffle.
This year’s theme, “Where Were You in ’72?”, will be the basis for our famous “roadside trivia” contest. Think ’72
was a non-event? It was a time of great transition in so many ways. Consider music alone….in that year the following artists had top 50 songs: Roberta
Flack, Sammy Davis Jr., Don McLean, Neil Young, Wayne Newton, the Hollies, Elvis, Moody Blues, Neil Diamond, the Osmond’s, Michael Jackson, Wayne
Newton, Elton John, Cat Stevens and Rick Nelson! It was a time of things coming to an end and new things beginning in music, culture, politics, sports
and more. Put on your way back cap and enjoy some old memories, familiar music and friends.
The day will start at the Jaguar Regional Training Center in Irvine where we will enjoy a continental breakfast and car show. Following that, it’s on the
road with our rally directions, first Poker Run card and Trivia Questions in hand. As usual, we’ll make a stop along the way at a little known Orange
County point of interest for some culture and a comfort stop. Then it’s on the road again to our secret lunch spot where a full meal will be served at NO
CHARGE! During lunch you’ll have a chance to enter a raffle for some great prizes, and improve your poker hand. Raffle and Trivia prizes include theatre
tickets, restaurant gift cards, concert and museum tickets, SeaWorld, Santa Anita, and Golf…..even an autographed picture of John Travolta! There will
be music (and maybe a little karaoke) as well as a special award for the best period costume (think crushed velvet, jumpsuits and polyester everything).
Every car entry gets a Simple Green Goody Bag!
The entire event is a fund raiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation which is making great strides in finding a cure for this debilitating disease. No charge,
but advance signups required so we have an accurate headcount for food. Signup on the Club website or by emailing Steve Kirby at sackirby@pacbell.

On the cover of this months edition, you will
see a detail shot of a Final Fifty Edition of
the Jaguar XK-RS.
Like with the E-type V12, these last 50
XK’s built are a comemerative edition – all
finished in black in the highest performance
spec - 550 hp - and loaded with options, as
a farewell to the XK that we have known
since 2007. Still a capable car, particularly
the later XKR with the supercharged 5.0
direct injection engine, the performance
envelope of this GT style car was light years
ahead of anything that Jaguar had offered
to that point.
However, the big Jag was competing for
buyers against the rather petite German
offerings and it wasn’t quite a fair fight. The
F-Type has leveled the playing field in that
regard, but I might still choose an XKR over
the F-Type for a midnight blast to Las Vegas
or for the 7-hour drive home on Sunday
afternoon!
including Hornburg Beverly Hills and Santa
Monica, invited me to spend some time
with the car when it first arrived. The car
was already sold by the time that I saw it
which precluded a test run.
Next time we will catch up around the
Easton garage…so stay tuned and drive
your jaguars. –Ed
In addition to the stellar model specific rims
and familiar XK-RS racing seats in white
(with diamond pleating – just gorgeous), the
car is equipped with true stamped louvers
on the hood (bonnet) as per the E-Type.
The presentation is excellent. Jaguar has
once again tastefully included a nod to the
design cues of the past. We have come
full circle in the discussion about bonnet
louvers!
In fact, the hood is a bolt on replacement
for the 2012-2015 model years so, I called
Hornburg and sure enough, there is a
hood available in the US with a list price of
$5,400. You’re in luck if you already have
a late XKR.
Valerie Valenzuela who is the marketing
director at Pendragon, the owner of five
Jaguar franchises in Southern California
The Dana Point Yacht Club was in its usual
festive décor for the 50+ who attended
this year’s holiday party. Hostess Shirley
Nyquist departed from the usual table
decorations to present each member with
a personalized Holiday coffee mug which
doubled as table place holder and entrée
declaration…how clever Shirley!
During cocktail hour, members Caroline and
Brian Quandt entertained us with a variety
of “how many are in the bottle” challenges.
Everything from peanuts to party beads
were loaded into glass jars for guests to
guess the quantity. After dinner they
awarded prizes to the winners.
President Mark Mayuga gave a brief
Volume 61 No.2

“State of the Club” address after dinner.
Unfortunately no one realized the
importance of his statements in advance,
so not notes or video were taken. I think
the conclusion was “things are OK”. Mark
also welcomed Roland Quinterro, longtime
member and ambassador from the San
Francisco Club.
Awards were next in line. Winning the
Club’s top prize for highest score in
Championship Division Concours (minimum
three shows) were Brian and Lisa Ellis both
with perfect scores (100.0) in the following
classes: C-11/J8 1998 XJ8 and C-13/JS
1996 XJS. Not only is it rare to have a tie
for first, but this is
www. lajagclub.com certainly the first time a husband and wife
have shared the honor with two different
cars!
Winning the Driven Division was Dave Kelley
in the D-9/XJS class with a perfect score
of 10.0. Due to a scoring snafu, Jim and
Betty Friel in their 1995 XJS OTS recently
acquired (from the Nyquist’s) were actually
announced as the winners with a score of
9399. As a result, both cars will share the
honor for 2015.
Jim also received the Leahy award for
Outstanding Contribution by a Board
Member, making it a big night for the Friel’s.
The Club is considering relocating
the Holiday Party in 2016 to be more
geographically central. Members with
recommendations for a venue should

AUCTION SPOTLIGHT
1961 E-Type OTS
In January, Scottsdale, Arizona is home to perhaps the largest
gathering of collector car auctions. Most of the big auction
houses are represented from Barratt Jackson to RM, Russo
and Steel and Gooding. Among the hundreds of cars changing
hands, there are a few gems such as the 1961 E-type OTS
pictured.
The general notion is that the first of any particular model run
is the purest design and therefore, the most collectible. In the
case of the E-Type, the first 500 or so cars are coveted more
than the others because of the Adam and Eve theory but also
because of design cues that were engineered away in later
Series 1 cars; namely, outside bonnet latches, welded louvers
and flat foot wells. Of the first 500 cars with these special
features, only 385 were left hand drive and this unit was the
169th to roll off the assembly line.
The subject of this article was restored to a very high level by
JOC Member Tom Krefetz at Classic Showcase. Tom will tell
you that restoring a car to this level requires infinitely more
time and attention from the very beginning of the restoration.
This car would compete in sanctioned JCNA events prior to
auction to further increase its provenance and score a perfect
100 points. At auction, the car brought $440,000 (including
buyer’s premium) at Barrett Jackson. Well done, Tom.
While the result for Tom’s ’61 was a large number, there was a
1966 E-Type OTS that brought $385,000 and another that 1961
that brought $260,000 at Gooding. The 1966 car significantly
outperformed its pre-sale estimate of $275,000 and the back
story was that it is time capsule car wearing its original
primrose yellow paint with only 7,500 original miles on the
odometer.
Hagerty Classic Car Insurance reports total auctions sales at
Scottsdale this year was $250.6M where 2,491 out of 3,104
cars were sold. The take was down 20% from last year’s
record sale but the sell-through rate was higher this year even
though there were more cars offered. All in all, it was a great
week to attend as a spectator or a bidder and a really exciting
way to find a new addition to the garage. Mark your calendar
for next year.
PETERSON MUSEUM TOUR AND BERGIN’S LUNCH
In January, the Club visited the
newly revamped and reopened
Peterson Automotive Museum
in Los Angeles. The Museum, a
mainstay in the LA automotive
arena for years, has recently
undergone a massive $120 million
renovation which includes a
dramatic modern-art façade. As
we learned, the interior also got a
professional makeover and many of
the exhibits are now dramatically
staged. The overall quality of
the cars on exhibit has also been
boosted.
After our leisurely self-guided tour,
it was a short walk up Fairfax to
Bergin’s Irish Pub where we had a
private room (and overflow) for
our group. The fish and chips
topped the charts for popularity
with diners, much to the dismay
of the kitchen which could only
fry up four pieces at a time…
needless to say, the lunch service
was “extended”, but much
camaraderie (and a few extra
pints) were shared by all.
A total of 48 Members and
Guests attended, a great turnout
for a Sunday during football
season.
WOODLAND HILLS SUPERCAR SUNDAY
A few photos are attached from the Valley contingents assault on Super Car Sunday in Woodland Hills. I was
having too much fun to take photos but we had a good turn out.
As usual, Kevin Eld’s XK120 drew crowds and compliments. It is always a good time!

“I found it on Ebay”
All good things end up on Ebay. This month I found a Jaguar F-Type Project 7 Roadster with 12 miles on
the odometer in Dallas, TX. These cars are rare - Jaguar only built 250 of these lightweight F-Type’s and
they were spoken for even before they were announced.
The Project 7 is a true Roadster with no top - just a fabric tonneau. In addition to it’s 77 pound weight
loss, it features 575 hp and a distinctive fairing behind the driver recalling the lengendary 1956 D-Type.
The opening bid on this car was $175,000 but we have missed the boat…the car has already sold!
