As I Ski It…
By Skiknutt, John Hilbrandt
Did you ever think about the similarities of skiing and driving an
automobile? What makes a great skier? Some of the same
characteristics that make a great driver.
First, you have to be focused. Skiers always are focused on the moment at hand and the
opportunities the terrain presents, what lies ahead and snow conditions. Drivers should
always avoid distractions and stay focused on traffic and conditions around them at all
times. They don’t stare at obstacles or think about things that are of little consequence like
what is behind them.
Second, skiers and drivers are always in the proper position. For drivers, two-hands on the
wheel and eyes on the road. Skiers maintain a balanced athletic stance with legs retracted
under the body. Forward vision allows drivers to anticipate what is ahead and what other
drivers are doing around him. A skier is focused downhill to gather information on snow
texture and depth, exposure, route options, obstacles, etc. This process allows both skiers
and drivers to combine this with their experience to make decisions quickly so he can predict what will be encountered and eliminate surprises.
Both good skiers and drivers employ good technical skills that make it hard to rattle them
and allow instinct to take over when presented with sudden challenges.
We have only four spots left for the Taos trip January 10-17, 2015. If you want to go learn
to ski or improve your present skiing skills at a big mountain world class ski resort this is
an excellent chance for you. Please let me know if you are interested ASAP.
New Question: We all know Mentone, AL has one of the smallest ski resorts in the US.
They have a vertical foot rise of only 150 feet. But this is not the smallest vertical rise in the
US. Name one ski resort that has less than half this vertical and where is it located.
Last Month’s Answer: Which culture has been in Taos for over 1000 years? Judy Rogers
knew that Native Americans was the correct answer.
